Ok... I want to upgrade my PDA2k, but am a bit on the chicken side. Has anyone created or cooked a COMPLETE ROM for the PDA2k that they can post a download link to?
I can do the flash myself, but don't know how to cook a ROM and don't have the tools. I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks!
ROM Upgrade
Read this site. It's all here.
This FTP site has the ROM for Blue Angel. I used this one to upgrade my PDA2K. Works much better than the released version. Only problem is with sound after using the built in MS PocketPC CLOSE command; just don't use it, use another program like "Launcher" that has it's own CLOSE command which does not cause the problem.
Here is the FTP link: ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/BlueAngel/BlueAngel_Roms/BA_1.40_radio_1.20_untested_extrom/
ChrisSpera,
Can you post a reply once you do the upgrade? I'd like to do it too, but I'm not as sure as you are on what to do. I also have a PDA2K from the US and would like to know how it goes.
Thanks,
Tom
Well, I got a little help from one of the patrons of this site, and I did get my PDA2k flashed with the 1.40 ROM, 1.12 Radio, and am working with a somewhat baked extended ROM. I've actually been tweaking it most of the day.
If you're using Cingular with your PDA2k, make certain that you grab the Cingular settings file from Club i-mate. You'll need those, as the settings in the SX66 ROM I used aren't quite right, though they work. Applications that automatically dial out via GPRS will not function correctly with the Connection Settings in that ROM. I am working with the guy that helped me to test the fixed connection settings, and when they are fixed, I'll let you know.
If you're using T-Mo, then make sure you get THOSE settings from Club i-mate and use those instead.
All is good, though! It works! I did have one hiccough, though; as my PC lost connection with the device BEFORE any flashing started. I bounced the box, leaving the device in the cradle, and was able to pick it back up from the beginning without any problems.
The device seems snappier. It connects to the PC faster, and boots faster. Pretty cool all told!
Thanks for the feedback! I hate to say this but I already started. It's been pretty slow in the office today, so I said...what the hell...and went for it. Wish I knew about the tmobile thing though. I'm just finishing the upgrade.
Where do I put the tmo information? Or, what do I do with it?
Tom
Chris,
What version is your extended ROM? Mine is 1.22.162 WWE
BTW, mine had the same problem with losing the connection. It's happened twice now. I updated my radio and the same thing happened. Strange.
Tom
I am using the SX66 1.40.110 (i think) version of the extended ROM.
If you go to the support area on club imate, and click on the Operator settings link in the support downloads area, you should be able to find a download link for a CAB that installs T-Mo connection settings. download it and use it to create your connections settings on your device.
I downloaded it and installed it. Didn't find it real helpful. I still had to go through everything to get mms and email setup. Oh well. Thanks for the tip though.
I've had it up and running for the past 24 hours and while I think the OS works a bit better I can't see a huge improvement. The phone is more responsive though.
Any notes on changes would be helpful. I did notice that the BT connects had a strenght signal now, which I find really helpful.
Question: Was this upgrade supposed to do anything to the extended ROM? Because the version is the same as before.
Thanks,
Tom

I just comprehended your post. Sorry about repeating the question when you already answered. How, or why, should I upgrade the extended ROM? I take it the upgrade I just did did not put the upgraded files in the extended ROM?
Tom
The extended ROM, which is about 16MB in size holds the custom software that comes on the device. You don't have to upgrade it at all. You can leave it be if you're happy with the software that's there.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the upgrade that was just performed by you and I install the new files into the ext rom automatically? Or, do I have to do it manually....copy the cabs from the laptop to the ext rom?
I've just been reading about cooking an ext rom and I'm going to give it a shot.
Tom
that depends on the files the update contained. Look for *.nbf files in the temp folder you launched the update from. What was in there? MS.nbf is the OS, radio.nbf is the phone and nk.nbf is the extended ROM.
I think I screwed something up. radio.nbf and nk.nbf were in the temp file but MS.nbf was not. Was it in yours? I believe I pulled the same file as you did from the link provided but there's no mention of it in there.
I also took a look at my extrom folder and none of the files that were listed in the link are in there nor loaded. I guess I'm getting things confused. Did you copy all the cabs into the extrom folder then run BAUpgradeut.exe? I just ran BAUpgradeUT.exe and thought they'd copy them over. I think I was wrong.
Tom
When i delete the files inside my extrom, they keep returning after a soft reset.
I tried to delete them with total commander - > no success
when i unhide/unlock the extrom and delete them, again after a softreset they are back.
I also removed the "read only" attribute, but that doesn't do the job as well.. Also files wich i add are gone after a reset.
Anyone got a clue what to do ?
Hmmm...
I've been flashing whole day, trying different roms and
i found out that the 1.3.2.3 rom allows me to delete everything in the extended rom, but on the 1.6.2.2 (and 1.6.2.4) rom the files keep coming back.. very annoying situation :S
The same with me,
i have the 1.6.3.1 Vodafone Rom and i cannot delete any files in extended rom nor copy any file. Even all the unlockers ar of no help. It seems that this version is locked differently.
Haven't tried to flash a different rom yet.
Hmmm...
It must be a regsetting then i hope..?
If i've got time enough today i'll flash the 1.3 rom again and make a
registry backup.. after that i'll flash it again with the 1.6 and do the same
and then compare the registry's.
Maybe that will do the job
For me now is the time to quit looking for a way to write files in the extrom, i hope some genius ppcguru will find the way of the dragon
Eventhough there is a minor difference in the registry of both roms, changing the value's or deleting certain storagemanager keys doesn't do the job.
Just a matter of time i hope....
Edit
I compared the registry's of the 1.3 and 1.6 rom, and there are some differences,
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\TrueFFS1]
"Key"="Drivers\\BuiltIn\\TrueFFS1"
"Flags"=dword:00000004
"SoftwareWriteProtect"=dword:00000001
"AutoDPDMode"=dword:00000001
also strange, that if you "delete" files, the memory comes free for that session, and you can make use of the memory, but after the soft reset it still wipes all added content.
Maybe there's a file with all cabs inside that it restores on reboot ?

I have compared the boot.rgu of ROM 1.5.x device and 1.6.x device. I think the key to the problem should be the \windows\boot.hv file, which come from \windows\boot.rgu. IF we could change remove the "writeprotect" key in that file the protection should be gone.

Still a problem or a soulution available?
Still a problem I geuss, at least based on the forum contents.
What could also be used is a ExtROM backup and edit (like the ER2003Edit for Himalaya I used to use) util.
Hopefully it should not be to difficult for the guys that made aWizard: Buzz_lightyear, machinagod, loki and ahlok_hk

I upgraded, it shows 1.15.0, i havn't had a chance to use it so i dont' know if there is any changes but i don't seem to have a problem.
Is this for real? Also, where is the file?? Went to the ftp and I could not locate it.

I've converted radio to V1 format so anyone can easily change country ID.
NBF password is 0x20040523: (xda3nbftool -x Radio_.nbf Radio_.nba 0x20040523, etc)
It is in BlueAngel/Radio_Roms/Radio_1.15_Type_I/ba_radio_1.15_in_v1_format.rar on FTP
Installed it. It seems that sound volume is more loud during the call.
EDIT (MDAIIIUser) Moved file and corrected post

You should distinguish between main ROM, extended ROM and radio ROM. All 3 have different version numbers. This is the latest _radio_ ROM.
And upgraiding radio would not cause hard reset if you have WM5. Only clock settings would be lost and minor hardware settings like button lock. Older OSes would hard reset, but you can restore from backup and would lose no data.
Really thanks for answer mamaich, mybe noe it's time to test wm5, but i've read about always the same problem of non "stk" for wm5.
Any possibilities for future???
Regards
Signal strength seems to be improved with this radio ROM.
I agree that signal strength seems better. Thanks as always!

Can I use to upgrade my PDA2k??
Hi,everyone.
I tried to upgrade my XDAIIs to WM5.but met "FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed"when I tried to resize the EXT_ROM.
I've done a hard reset and install the ext_rom files as a standard procedure. Then install xda-developers_Unlocker.CAB.
I tapped unhide then did a soft_reset,'unlock' then soft_reset.So I did see the ext_rom as well as copying/deleting files in it.
But when I used the DOC repartitioning tool with default value'128kb',I received the error "FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed"
I've tried several times, still doesnt work...
ROM:1.42.00 WWE
Radio:1.13.00
EXTROM version:1.42.119 WWE
Any help will be great. Thanks for advance. :x
me too!
I had this same error on an sx66. I have 2 of them one of them gave this error and I couldnt upgrade, the other worked fine and it's upgraded to wizard v2a now and doing great. Any ideas on what this error means or how to get around it and reformat the ext rom?????
Me too
Got exactly the same issue,,, At least i have installed wm5 without reformating the rom but I'd like to find why mine BA is doing that instead of the one of a friend, exactly the same origin... For my friends it works at the first time....
Hiya
I was searching XDA-DEVELOPERS website about 2 days to find a solution for this problem, I have an I-mate PDA2K, i used all EXTROM tools on this website like this:
1- Installed EXTROM_tools,
2- run UNHIDE ,
3- then run UNHIDE,
4- Soft Reset,
5- now i can see Extended_ROM on my file explorer, i can read it , and able to write on it ... copy paste ...
6- run REPART_DOC.exe on my device,
7- tried many sizes like 128kb, 1024, 2048, 512, 61000, .................
but on this step i always get the god damned FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed,
i finally used Task 28 under MTTY but nothing happened, still have this problem,
No Wayyyyyy ! No wayyyyyyyyyy to repart my DOC size, .... noooooooooooo wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
anyone going to help me plzzzzzzzzzzz ?
I second that request. I've got exactly the same problem, however with a genuine Qtek 9090. After unhiding and unlocking, I can delete all the contents of Storage and ExtROM. In fact, both are empty now. However, any attempt to use the partitioning tool only results in that %&$§/%(/ error message.
I've tried nearly any wm 2003 firmware since someone mentioned he succeeded by using an old pda2k firmware - still the same result. I've even changed the name of the Storage FS driver in the registry - no success either.
I'd be happy to provide some debug information or the like.
PLEASE HELP!

My ExtROM _is_ unlocked. I did write that I was able to delete all its content. So it's quite pointless to talk about localized unlockers.
Reasonable comments, anyone?
There is I believe a way to do this through MTTY. At least get everything back to normal before running the resizer tool. (A way to bring DOC chip to factory formating) Its probably corruption of the DOC. I remember doing this on the Universal, I just don't remember any of that right now. Do an all device search for MTTY and DOC for a possible solution and verify it with some of the hardware gurus first before attempting.
Well, what I did is that
set 14 0
task 28
task 0
sequence which cleared the ExtROM and corrupted the boot screens (there are white stripes across it now), but had no effect on the DOC_repart error message.
I'd really appreciate some investigation from the gurus here since the problem exists for several years(!) now without any solution.
guys...
try this...
downgrade to wm2003
unlock/unhide/repart your doc first to your liking.
then upgrade to wm5 or wm6.

@Mods
(I hate to reply to this but i have to about questioning my reading skills)
---------------
Actually IF you tried it right for the first time you can never go wrong.
in WM2003
1. UNHIDE
2. UNLOCK
3. FORMAT_DOC set it to the smallest size
Because technically and sensibly:
You cannot unlock a hidden partition
You cannot format/resize a locked partition
That's as plain as it could ever be.
My 3-LINER INSTRUCTION is sufficient to solve your problem.
MTTY doesnt have to enter the scene it's only used if you have a broken mail button.
You(Generalizing) never said exactly where and what OS is you(Generalizing) are doing. Such WHINING deserves my straightforward answer.
So we give instructions, as we are given the problem.
What's not reasonable from what i've said?
Even a 5th grader can do instructions.
(now that's harsh)
FYI
There IS and WILL BE an Extrom in and WM5/WM6 even if you have changed it in WM2003. It's part of the BA.
You just cant see it and it's not being utilized. it's a Disk_On_Chip. if you managed to know MTTY.
You SHOULD know that.
ROLLBACK to 2003se then do everything right. Otherwise, read the WIKI.
and if you're sure you're doing everything right then you might have a faulty hardware.

is this probleme solved??
Maybe you try this:
1. Downgrade to wm2003s
2. copy unhide&unlock (*.cab) to main memory and run it
3. start/program/extrom there we have 4 program ( hide, lock, unhide, unlock) --> run unhide then unlock ---> softreset
4. copy repartDOC (*.exe) to main memory and run it:
- format with 128kb --> you'll have 60Mb storage
- format with 16000kb (recomment) --> you'll have 45Mb storage
6. then Upgrade to wm5.0 or 6.0
7. after upgrade --> do a clean with record+camera+softreset --> no/ yes/ yes
Enjoy

And that's the point where the mentioned error message occurs.
Some fellow posters and me tried some dozens of different wm2003(se) versions on their Blue Angels, ran virtually any unhide/unlock tools available here, cleared their ExtROM and Storage areas to the very last bit, even tampered with the bootloader accessible via MTTY to get things in order.
To me, it's out of the question that most of the posters who've reported that error could be to simpleminded to follow the few instructions. It appears that there are some devices which have to be either different by hardware or by software that can't be repartitioned by the published tool.
However it's a fact that the Blue Angel is an outdated device these days and I fear that the dev gurus won't pay attention anymore.

I'm seriously hoping he does! I upgraded to this ROM last night and it seems okay, but just not quite the same without summiter's touch.
The easy way to upgrade
I was using xelencin's 2.24 version. I backed up with SPB backup, used the installer above, and installed 2.26. Then, when the installation was complete, I prevented the customization (after the screen align, etc., when the 'customization will begin in 3 seconds' popup appears, perform a soft reset with the stylus), and restored the backup.
This seems to work fine.
I then used total commander to copy the /extended_rom/ T-Mobile customizations to the miniSD and installed a few of them -- smart dialing, phone_light, PP_Extversion (not sure what that does), and the updated Hotspot login.
Of course, I didn't get the advantage of cleaning up the system, but since I did a start-from-scratch build a month ago, that wasn't necessary.

This seems like a good idea. I might try to something like this myself. I ended up uninstalling the Hotspot since we don't have T-Mobile where I am and I figured it had to do with their network.
A question... how do you disable the "message sent" notification for SMS messages? I've searched the forum but I can't find it anywhere.
UPDATE: Nevermind about diabling "message sent". I found a the hack for it.
TIA!
gonna try it now thatn for the information. i never let the customizations load after the phone rom is completed seems the phone works better without i just add the needed cabs.

Is there a depository somewhere with all the extended ROM cabs separated (and documented, what's what, what does what, etc) so you can just pick and choose what you want to install?
i just base my cabs off the files that xenelicin uses on his custom roms. when i first got the phone i donwloaded alot of cabs and yes there is a topic on this board somewhere with all the cabs and what they do. i still got a bunch i dont know exactly what they do so i never use em.

Thanks, I'll look around for that post.
I'm downloading now!
I'm also using xelencin's 2.24 version, I been happy with it, "Upgrade or NOT to Upgrade - That is the question". How's the radio working?
Radio is fine
The radio is fine.
I tried running some of the t-mobile customizations from 2.26 and that caused things to slow down. Understand that I am doing these over xelencin's customizations, so there may have been conflicts. Here is what I installed (these are abbreviations):
enable ntiz
smartdial enable
edge icon
generic conn settings
generic ui
other conn settings
security policy
phonelight
pp extversion
gprsandedgeDTMF
ringtone
WISPA - (this is HOTSPOT)
camera
This turned out to be a bad idea and I rolled back to the customizations I was running in 2.24.
I'm going to wait for someone to sort out what the entire list of customizations is. Xelencin renamed the customizations (in a way to make them understandable) but that makes it harder for me to match them up.

Perhaps.. =) What's the OS version in this bad boy?
I know there's a list of Cingular extended ROM cabs but does anyone know what each one does? I just pulled the T-Mobile extended ROM cabs too and I'm wondering what those do so I can pick and choose what I want to install.
Also, is there a way to create a cab with all the regedits so you can just execute that one cab?
TIA!
Seems to still be AKU 2.3 but newer everything else.

Missing the Milet Manager in new 2.26 ROM
What does T-Mobile USA have against the Midlet Manager? Why is it that they never include it? T-Mobile UK has it, and others as well.
Has anyone pulled just the Midlet Manager out of the UK 2.21 version?

I will answer myself:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Wizard/Intent_MIDlet_manager.cab
Shortcut in Phone App
This ROM works great for me, the most difference is the speed, which is greatly improved. Impressive. Been waiting a long time for an official update, although Im not sure its worth upgrading from the 2.24 cooked rom...
