BigStorage for BlueAngel? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi all, especially the hacking staff (mamaich, xda2jojo, buzz_lightyear etc.)
On the Magician forum, the folks has just found out how can you merge the Extended ROM and the Storage into a bigger "BigStorage" drive. The downside is that you have to install manually your extended ROM stuff since there is no extended ROM; but you will have a bigger storage, which stays when you Hardreset (Which I do a LOT, because i like playing with different ROMs ). So, I'm asking you, is it possible to port this hack to BlueAngel?

I'm also interested!!!!

KTamas,
This is what i have done. After upgrading my device with the latest ROM and installing all the cabs from extended rom, i emptied the extended rom and have it unlocked and unhide all the time and now i am using it has a storage option. Whenever i install any programs, active sync enables you to install in the extended rom. The only downsize is that if you want to hard reset you have to put back all the cabs back in the ext rom. I use sprite restore whenever i have to hard reset so i skip this step also. I guess you can try this option.

Full ROM Backup

Hi All!
I'm newbie here. Please, don't beat me for my question .
I've got Qtek 9100, and now want to play with ROM. BUT! I read a lot of here, and haven't found the Full ROM Backup programm. Is it possible? Or, the only way to backup my original ROM partly, using aWizard?
Thanks for any help.
The aWizard tools do Backup all of the rom except bootloader.
BUT: The ExtROM is backuped in single files which is a problem when you want to insert the ExtROM back into the Wizard: because with the newer ROMs (1.6.x) the ExtROM can only be made visible (and stays read-only).

addr You can backup full ROM to SD card, and then to your PC.
Click my signature to get the tool.
Ah, great!
That's the very thing i was looking for!
Thanks Button!

Sorry, it was a bug in my command file, so CID-unlocking was failed.
Now everything works fine. Please, re-download the tool (click my signature).
I tried using your backup for my ROM, because I was going to upgrade. I'm definitely a newbie at ROM upgrading and backing up...
After running the backup utility, my Qtek won't see my mini-sd card anymore. Do you know how I can make it see my card again? Did the process reformat my card or is there another problem?
Thanks!

the data backup in your mini-sd-card is not FAT compliant. but it's OK for restoring using Qtek's rom-flash procedure.
in another way, you can use tools like WinHex to view, edit or save your mini-SD to a PC as a raw binary file.

If you have already saved your ROM image to PC (myrom.bin file), you can format SD card, and use it as always.
Um, I have a noobie question as well...
Will a full ROM backup take a backup up of everything installed after being shipped from the manufacturer, i.e. programs, reg settings etc., or will it only backup the basic ROM and extended ROM, i.e. what you're left with when you hard reset your device?
the_invisigoth Yes, only ROM, not installed apps.
Hi Button,
Does your program backup the whole ROM (ie OS + Extended) or just the OS??
Is there a way to backup the OS only so that I can backup the latest Qtek OS part only. Reload my T-mobile extended ROM then restore the Qtek OS only ROM, giving me the latest OS with my T-mobile customisation??
Cheers

It backups Full ROM = OS+ExR+Radio+SPL/IPL+Splash..
Use aWizard to backup your ROM partly.
I needed Button's program before I updated to 2.8.7. I have a cingular 8125 I upgraded to 2.8.7 it overwrote my extended ROM, when I flashed everything back from awizard I relaized my extended ROM was not restored, so I flashed to 1.5.4 so I could access the extended ROM, but it downgraded my IPL and SPL to 1.?? from 2.??. So once I restored my extended ROM in 1.5.4 I upgraded just the OS to 1.8.11 from my original backup, and now when I do a hardreset it locks up during extended ROM installation. Unless I can find a way to edit the extended ROM on 2.8.7 I wont be able to restore my unit to original specs. Unless someone uses Buttons program on a Cingular 8125 and uploads it somewhere for me. I am gonna return this unit to frys and purchase it at the cingular store for a bit cheaper price. So I was hoping to restore it to orignal specs so the next helpless frys customer dosent get stuck wth a funky unit. Thanks all!
@Button,
would this method allow me to replace my 8125 to its original state including the bootloader flash screen ? i am needing to put my 8125 to its original state prior to returning.
I have a new 8125 that i could take a backup of and want to load it onto the one that i am returning. would this work ? thank you
Yes it should work.
Button,
does your program also perform restoral of ROM and all its content from the backup it's made ?
thanks for your help.

It can backup only 'clear' ROM, without programms that you have installed manually.
THANK YOU BUTTON !!!!
I was able to FULLY RESTORE my Cingular 8125 to its OEM Spec including the first boot splash screen !!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
I spoke too soon.
Here's what happens...
After 8125 has been booted up, on the screen it says, "Data Crashes. Please contact your service Provider". And if you see on the top left corner, it says SIM LOCK. It will not let me reload the image again from the SD card from the bootloader. When I press the Voice Dial, it says, No Update Allow!.
I've tried to run the aWizard and Lokitz tool to unlock again but to no avail.
Have you seen thsi before ?
First, try to flash an old rom (from bootloader mode), - run any ruu. Then, unlock SIM and CID, if it is need. And then use SD card to restore your original rom.

Windows Mobile 5 - Clean...?

Hiya all!
I was just (this morning) checking the front page, and it said something about the new/edited WM5 for the Blue Angel, totaly clean or something... I figured I can't put this software on my Qtek 9100 (got some error like: Wrong Device), so I wanted to ask you, is there a way, or some tool, to delete (all) pre-installed programs, like:
Pocket MSN (and reinstall the MSN Messenger as in WM2003?)
Pocket IE
Windows Media Player
Office Mobile
File Explorer
... In short: everything ...
Don't get me wrong, I like Office Mobile, WMP and Pocket IE, but I really want to install them myself when I need them, and perhaps use some 3rd party software instead of the defaults...
Anybody can reccommend me some tool, or a ROM or somethin', or am I just being stupid and wasting my time here
I'll be waiting for responses!
Thanks for your time, and take care!
Rik
all programs you are referring to are part of the un-customized ROM's.
Usually 'clean' ROMs are ROMs that do not have any Operator settings or 3rd party software installed.
If youre looking for a clean Wizard ROM: The Qtek ROMs are (imho) the cleanest: Just the basic stuff, no operator specifics or skinning.

Thanks for your reply, I have another question:
If I download and Install the newest Cingular ROM, and reset it when it says: Auto Configuring in 3 seconds (or something)... Is is also "clean" then?

Clean Clean
Yes it will stay clean.
you can also clean the EXT ROM
copy the file to your device install it and SR.
after cleaning the EXT ROM uninstall it, and you have a clean ROM.
Is everything in the extended ROM deletable... is it no longer used by the system. Once I unistall that utility is it going to give me more space or just hide it? thanks
Everything in the EXT ROM is deletable and yes you can leave it unhide but it will be no useable ,it is write protected.
sorry to butt in but i have a question. mine is mda vario and i did not install the customization (soft reset during customization). the question is, can i install and use this just to make sure i have a clean rom? or is it better if i just leave my settings the way it is because i did not install the customization. thanks.

hard reset

Im wondering i was reading this this post on the cingular a2dp aku2.3 test rom and i have that flashed but as soon as the ext rom loaded and started the customizations i reseted to cancel them. i then read that faria had made a ext rom that had no cingular settings in them so i loaded this. this is what he wrote.
his is a proper extended-rom .nbf is not a folder containing the files
To install unzip the folder and run the ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID.exe
You will not lose any setting that you have in your rom. It simply updates the extended-rom.
when’d you decide to hard reset you device again the extended rom will load automatically as in the official rom , there it is .no Cingular stuff .

faria

but i read a hard reset is when you do clear storage and its supposed to loose all your settings. hows that supposed to work then. am i reading wrong or doing something wrong
The Hard Reset reset state will depend on the ROM you have flashed on your phone. Hard resetting will force the extended rom customisations to be loaded up (unless you skip them).
Faria may have made (I've no experience with the particular files) a ROM "update" that just updates the extended rom with the no cingular settings stuff - everything else stays the same after his "upgrade". Then, hard resetting will force the system to install from his custom extended rom rather then the original ROM's extended rom.
Hope that's correct and makes sense!

ok but the thing is how do i do it. I mean the way i read in the manual and the way i read on other forums wipes out your wholedisk. or am i mistaken.

A few of us have made Update Roms which don't have the OS portion in them. If you don't flash the OS then your settings are not lost.
Faria's Extended ROm Only Flash is a perfect example of one of these updaters.
so if i flash the ext rom then go to the clear storage and do it and answer yes to it. and do that hard reset my stuff wont be lost even though it says it wipes the storage

You will always lose your settings etc on a Hard Reset!
You won't lose any settings if you flash the Extended Rom or Radio Rom.
grrrrrrr i dont think you are understanding me.
ok i flashed the rom complete os. Then i reseted before the cingular settings went into effect. then i flashed with the faria extended rom. I didnt do a hard reset so the rom customize didnt go into effect. I set everything up like i normally use. should i even do a hard reset now . or should i just leave it like it is.
second. If i flash the cingular rom again. cancel the cingular customizations. then install the ext rom. then do a hard reset would i have to reflash the rom or would it leave the blank rom on there

If you want the customization from the Faria Extended Rom then you have to do 1 of two things:
1. Hard Reset and let the customizations run..
2. Manually run the customizations either by unlocking the Ext Rom so you can do it or using Total Commander.
#1 loses your current settings, #2 does not.

If your goal is to have fresh device with the Cingular Rom and Faria Custom Extended Rom then your best course of action is:
1. Flash the Cingular Rom.
2. When your device resets itself, enter Bootloader (holding Camera button).
3. Flash Faria Extended Rom.
4. Hard Reset Device and do initial set-up allowing customizations to run.

One of the major things that would help would be to figure out the [DEV] folder of Bepe's ROM Kitchen. With that available for the Wizard then this system should work just fine.

Interrupt customization
You can always prevent the customization of the ROM, and then install whatever you want, including extended ROM files. I did this with T-Mobile's 2.6 ROM, creating a folder on my miniSD that contains all the CABs I want to install, including some from the 2.6, Total Commander, etc.
Then, when I do a hard reset, I prevent the customization, and run through the installation of these files manually. It is a small convenience to automate the process, but much easier to experiment and start over, which is likely to be necessary to figure out what is useful, needed, works or doesn't work.
The T-Mobile customization is discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=57726
I will be interested to hear how the 3.2 works!
Personally what I want to be able to do is to load certain programs into the base ROM package. Like Pocket Informant and PhoneAlarm and AlarmToday. That way they leave me with more available storage memory space.

Soft reset
After the hard reset, you will go through the screen alignment, move Dr. Johnson's appointment, and then the Today screen comes up. Perform a soft reset with the stylus (poke the hole in the side) when the 'The Customizations will begin in 3 seconds" pops up. As long as you do it before the 3 seconds are over, the customization is prevented.

Questions about changing ROM

The first time is always the hardest.
Recently I've been playing with the registry to try and lower the 'lowest volume' setting for my headset with no success. Apparently I need to change the audiopara file. I'm thinking that changing the ROM may help. So here's a few questions:
1 - If I decide to go back I can download my original ROM from here (Generic Australia R3AA013 Software Update)?
2 - Do you reckon Christians 6.5 ROM is pretty good? Do you recommend changing ROM?
3 - Does each ROM come with it's own registry etc or do they rely on stuff on the phone (does flashing the ROM remove everything?).
Thanks!
.... sorry can't post links. Feel free to recommend a good 6.5 ROM.

2. Some people flash their phones 2-3 times a day, so it's good to have something to fall back onto where everything is setup the way you want to. That being said, I don't back up my ROM, I just do a clean install every time I reflash.

When you do a hard-reset, which I've done recently, that take your phone back to square one. So I guess what I'm trying to work out is if it's necessary to back-up the ROM. Basically I'm being lazy.

when i clicked the next button i show the progress bar on each of tow (pc and x1i) and then stay on 0% for about 3 min then it show the recovery wizard , some time it said that "lost connection" others nothing but recovery... x1i here still showing the progress bar as 0% , so i remove the battery or soft reset to go into the recovery wizard , then i shows successfull recovery ... but i don't see any respond on the x1i , it's the same status , no boot no ability to update or or ...
when i connect the x1 and go to boot loader(manually known buttons) the Win XP (mine on pc SP2) show new device and good install driver and successfull driver installion on the first time and then just shows the sound of plug in the device or plug out...;

I would advice on backing up your personal things: contacts, mail, messages, some settings if you want (like hw keybd layout...)
to back-up a rom is only useful if you change reg settings often and want to have a backup in case of system crash/failure
as you intend to change your rom once in a while a backup of one specific rom doesn't make sense you see? preserve your personal data, that does it
pim, sprite, spb, synch, myphone, ... there are many ways, read about them and decide for yourself
@truthglow did you try with your sd card taken out?

I use online sync for my calendars - so no problem there. Don't care if I lose my SMS messages.
I've copied across any pictures.
I store all the .cabs for my favourite apps on my SD card.
I made some changes to the registry to try and adjust the headset volume but to no success.
So probably don't need to pack up my Rom.
I like the look of Spike's X1.5 ROM.

sounds reasonable so far
you can use apps to automatize (to a degree) the restoring of personal settings/apps/progs/data/...
e.g. with user customization (UC) or sashimi
that's especially useful when often flashing an update of the already installed rom, as menu structure and general reg layout is similar (expect for certain update)
that way you can easily get most of your customization done without major effort (except of course for the one time you need to config your uc tool), right after flashing, some roms even check for uc configuration during rom customization process
about the reg edit: did the adjustment not work or the export of the changed setting?
yes i did it

I would advice on backing up your personal things: contacts, mail, messages, some settings if you want (like hw keybd layout...)
to back-up a rom is only useful if you change reg settings often and want to have a backup in case of system crash/failure
as you intend to change your rom once in a while a backup of one specific rom doesn't make sense you see? preserve your personal data, that does it
pim, sprite, spb, synch, myphone, ... there are many ways, read about them and decide for yourself
@truthglow did you try with your sd card taken out?

^ I edited the registry in an attempt to decrease the headset minimum volume (I found the minimum volume too loud for in call & listening to the radio).
I have since learnt that I need to change the audiopara file. But I don't have the expertise. So I'm hoping my new 6.5 ROM's headset volume is a little quieter .
