Hi,
I need some assistance. I am currently cooking my extended rom. My Extended rom does not have enough space so, i am putting some of my MUST HAVE softwares in my storage so that it installs after a HARD RESET.
But, most .cab files will auto delete upon launch. Is there any way to make
it not delete ? Kindly assist.
Thanx a million
You can avoid the CAB files being deleted by making them read-only.
Well i mean that there is a Registry hack that will not delete .cab's on installation, but you would have to make a .cab with that registry setting and install it as the first thing after hardreset, although i dont think it will work since the registry is already loaded, and the new setting require a reboot to work.
Look in Wiki for registry hacks.
So why dont you just Write protect the .cab's that you want to hold on to

i have tried that but, dont work
All my "wanna hang on to" .cab's are write protected, and non of them get deleted upon installation.
Manuel installation that is.

Thats why i need to coookkk
I have room enoughf in my ExtRom, so I have never auto installed from other than the ExtRom.
But I'm almost 100% sure that there was a topic on auto installing from \Storage (Card) sometime ago.
Maybee youll find some info in the Wiki

Wait a day or two, maybe someone who knows come along.
You can use a software name Cabinst wich let you install a cab without deleting it.
Easy.
Hi,
Easiest way is to make cab read only. Browse the storage card using PC via activesync. Right click on cab file. Go to properties and make it readonly.
You can also change the deafult beahvior of Instal by changing registry key.

fAskDest=0
fAskOptions=0

nDynamicDelete=2
Supported="PALM PC"
* fAskDest=1 gives you a popup when you install a CAB so you can install on Storage Card for example
* fAskOptions=1 asked before overwriting, haven't found out if/what other options
*fEnableCef : I haven't messed around with that
* nDynamicDelete=0 and the CAB file remains, =1 it disappears but what the difference with the default value 2 is I couldn't figure out.
So if anyone else wants to experiment with it and post their findings
I searched Google but all I could find was about fAskDest

keep the ext rom empty,
after reboot hack the reg to point to new area.
Run the autorun from threre.
Have all files as read only.
info under

Only problem is that all cabs are installed in the default location.
I have yet to get cabinstall to run in batch mode using the nscript tool.
Hope its what you are after

I'm just starting to get into the depths of my PDA2K and this site is GREAT!!!!!!! Since I'm just one step up from "The Village Idiot", I have a couple questions for all you pros.
After reading about using the extended ROM, and unlocking it and seeing what's in there, I think I've figured it out. Whatever CABs are listed in the config file will be installed upon a hard reset....correct? If true, and since I have only 3.5MB left in Ex ROM, can I put the other CABs I wanted installed in say /storage/CABs, list them in the config file and upon a hard reset they will be installed? Is there any reason to put them into Extended ROM rather than Storage? Is it alright to put CABs in from like games, Resco Explorer, WebIS Mail, etc.? Lastly is there a way to set the programs up where I don't have to go back and enter all the registration numbers again?
Thanks a ton for your help!!!
Tom
In extended rom they are not taking up your precious storage space on the device.

is it possible then to keep the installation cabs on storage card,
and also, can that path be set in the config file in ext rom?
what happens if a particular cab is not found after hard reset?
is the installation stuck or it just gives a warning and keeps on going to the next cab listed in the list.
Have a read of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=83119#83119
It might be a bit to deep but should help you along the way.
1) You can keep a cab anywere you want
2) make sure your cab is read only as it can delete itsself after install.
3) to run a auto install from a differnet storage place you need to hack the reg (see thread).
In all if you have a sd card you could leave your EXt rom empty.
Hack the reg to the new postion and run the Autorun from there.
Have fun
Thanks for all the infor everyone! From what I've read in other threads I need to make sure that TPdisabled is set to off so that when programs like WebIS Mail and SplashID get installed I can touch the screen to make sure they install into the right place and other things. Correct? If this is correct, should I just remove TPdisabled all together?
Thanks again,
Tom
TPdisabled can't be set off, its either run or not run. So dump it and you wont have a problem
MDAIIIUser - Thanks for the link! I looked at it and you're right, it's pretty indepth and I'll have to read it more closely at a later time....like at work.
Question1: leochan2005 had a follow-up saying "why not use backup"? While I agree this would be easier, I'm assuming that by using your method one would get a much "cleaner" install than backing up all the crap that was on the system prior to the hard reset...correct?
Question2: It took me a long time to get my TMo settings setup on my PDA2K and I don't want to go thru that again. Is there a way to backup those settings so that they can be auto-configured at a later time? I read about making a personalsettings.CAB but haven't done it yet.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks! I take it it should be at the beginning of the config file so that I can access it. Correct?
q1)
Well the short of "why not use backup" is you can if you feel that:
1) Restoring Regedit values from a lower rom version
2) Restoring system applications form a lower rom version such as BT
are called for, wanted or even needed.
I fail to see that point as a upgrade is an upgrade and a backup is a backup. Now you could do a restore of your system data also (which you could also sync and that would be clean
Q2)
Most fo those settings are part of T-mobile.cabs found in Extrom, the rest would have been reg entries that you are going to have to hunt for and copy.
So sorry no way around reading the other thread (personalsettings.CAB)
MDAIIIUser - Maybe I should state what I'm trying to accomplish and you could give me a clue as to how to do it. A couple days ago I upgraded by BT on my PDA2K (generic from Expansys) to 1.0.0.3900 (or what ever the latest is) and I'm currently looking at upgrading my radio to 1.12, but that would require a hard reset. I'm not in the mood to go thru all the program installs and SMS/MMS tweaking again, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get all my programs and configurations back after the hard reset. I thought by incorporating the personalsettings.cab (for my Tmo settings) and your method I would be up and running pretty quickly. Yes? I have Sprite Backup, but I'm not sure if that's going to overwrite anything after the radio upgrade????
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Well my logic (that could be wrong) would say that a restore of your backup would get you to were you are now.
That you would need a restore as you have to do a hard reset after the 1.12 radion install.
But I can't answer the question will the radio be restored as well,
I don't know, I don't know the settings in the backup application, so am sorry I will have to let somebody else answer this one.
is it possible to make an already full patched(button fix, camera, bluetooth, etc) rom with all basic programs (such as mms client, stk, backlight, etc)?
i think yes but i'm not able to make it..it will be very usefull for newbies such me..
with this full rom you do not need to post lots of duplicated threads and all will works since the beginning..
yeah i would like that to,
so we only have to install it without patching and so
very good idea!!!!
but now, apart the Wiki, there is a list of all patchs that must be installed?!
'cause I don't have enough time to read alle the pages in WM5 problem resolutions thread
well,
so far, i created a project for a extended rom under wm2005.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_WM5_Extended_ROM
Butt im stuck, it will not install off the rom after a hard reset.
If this would be working we do not have to worry anymore if we forgot or lost our sd card for the neccesary patches.
i think yes
i can make a list but someone has to do that
i think tha the 'default' are:
camera fix
wm5_v3 fix
button fix
midi with album fix
missing system programs (mycpl.rar)
traylauncher
wifi programs
sim manager
and a set of default programs:
pdf reader
xscaler
pocketplus
pocketrar
etc..
I would say no, i'd rather have the choice to install what patches i want. For instance if i dont use MMS or prefer the soft keys of WM5. The way it is now you can configure the device just as you want. Getting a working extended rom you can customise would be my choice. I definitely wouldnt want Pocketplus installed by default on my device.
It has to work first.
So anybody already found a working autorun.exe and config.txt files?
I Tried alot of those two, but still not able to get it working under te extended rom after a hard reset.

Yes i dont have to use it; but if the patches are no longer released separately then i have no choice. If there is a choice of all-in-one rom and non-patched that will be ok. But you have to think of who creates the rom, it may be easier just to maintain one rom version. I guess we have to wait and see..
@pimbo have you tried the autorun from the K-Jam extended rom? May be different from the Universal files. Its here ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/

Not yet, preparing my device now, autorun is 17kb from this one
setup is 104kb, looks common, exept the dates are a bit older.
Manually launching the autorun of files on the extended rom will work, so i guess that i have to do a hardreset again, thats what i going to do later the evening. lol 8)

No luck. wil not automaticly run.
Still need to make the rom visible and run the autorun.exe for the installs.
But this is the nearest solution for now i guess.
So you still need a single cabfile on a sd card to unhide your rom and install all files on there.
If anybody knows the bytes to change in the nbk or nbf files or maybe in the bootstrap, the adaption could be completed and the patches would automaticly install after a hardreset. .
please don't OT
...so
dev can make all in one rom and single patch

right?!
i for one would love an all encompassing rom patch. reading through all the duplicate posts and other resolutions is a real hassle for noobs. we see the same questions being asked every 3 days or so and it just creates more clutter for the other noobs to sift through. i figure a lot of those fixes should be included in the next patch of the current wm5 rom anyhow if people rather wait for that to come around.

I am trying to delete programs that I believe I don't need. I use WiFi and do not have T-Mobile Internet Plan. Would I create a problem if I delete the following:
DAT MailTrigger
OZ Communications OM IM
T-Mobile HotSpot Login Utility
Thank you!
Are these in your Remove Program list? If not, you may not able to 'uninstall' these nicely.
What I suggest is that you may want to have a look on your Ext ROM, get all the CABS file there. Use some CAB managers, to open each of them and see where they have places the files and delete them. If things goes wrong, you can always have it installed since you already know which CAB is responsible for which.
Or, if you can affort a hard reset, reset your device and do not allow the Ext ROM to be install (e.g. soft reset your device after the security setup). Then, go into your Ext ROM and install the CAB files one by one, to identify the CAB files that you do/do-not want to install. This will give you a clean installation.

Ys, these are in my Remove Program list. They are loaded apps/software that is part of the T-Mobile total package. I did not load these using a CAB file. I guess I will just take a chance and remove them and see what happens. Like you said below I can do a Hard Rest if I need to. Thanks for your input. I do appreciate it.

I remove those apps if I remember too and since I've never had a need for their functionality, I've never had a problem because of uninstalling them. All you really gain, however, is a tiny bit of memory...which is probably why I usually don't remember to remove them.
Just completed removing the following:
Memory Available Before/After Removal: (Saved
DAT MailTrigger 3450/3624 (174)
OZ Communications OM IM 3624/3629 (5)
T-Mobile HotSpot Login Utility 3629/4052 (423)
Restart after removal and no problems.
Thanks for your responses.

Hi Pam, .cab or cabinet files are installed from within your device, just click on it and it will ask you where you want the files too be installed (device or storage card). You will find that there are .exe istaller files that can initiate the same process, but you have to be connected to your computer, which most of us don't like. It is an easy and clean way the install files directly in your device. I personally like to keep a lot of cab files in my storage card so that if I delete the cab or flash my device i can reinstall all my favorite applications again, no matter where I am
i have found some .exe in most himalaya rom's "\Windows" folder that seem too be not needed so they could be deleted from future kitchens and stuff.
anyway here they are with screenshots..
1.sms_alert_fix.exe-pretty obvious.
2.SimLock.exe-i think something to do with unlocking sims (eventhough i've never used it).
3.cgacutil.exe-it shows you what version of NetFrameWork you are running (not sure if it gets installed as defult when NetFrameWork is installed.
4.hwhelp.exe-seems to be left from the keyboard option of character recognizer.
5.wrlsmgr.exe-maybe a part of the himalaya wireless driver.
can these be removed or deleted safely?
any ideas?

SMS_Alert_Fix will revive your phone when you will get a sms.
Simlock is really weird.
cgacutil is funking needed.
hwhelp is not needed but I don't want to know what will happen when deleted
wrlsmgr is needed for people who have SDIO Wifi card which himalaya support.
thats it then SimLock.exe is getting deleted and i will see what happens!

msim is keyboard right?
wisplite is totally unneeded, you can delete it but don't forget to delete registry entries in shell
also i know these can be deleted bcuz they are to do with error reporting and feedback-
DwXfer.dll
dw.exe
ceipui.exe
and also this-
BackPack.dll
hey muckelmaus these are needed for keyboard-
msim.dll
msim.96.dll
this for the 4 dots you have to tap when you first start up a new rom-
welcome.exe
and this is one of your splash screens-
welcomehead.96.png
and this is used for the search device for file function-
shfind.exe
otherwise i cannot see any problem with deleteing the rest of them...
i have also found this on a other part of xdadev-
*
Hd.dll
*
Aosaxst0.dll
*
Mencfilt.dll
Here Hd.dll and Aosaxst0.dll are used for M$ debug. Like some times on pc the apps close itself, and windows asks you to send the details to M$ (example. error number : 893647). We ( users) don’t know what it means, only the developer in M$ know. But I never saw these files report anything to us. SO!!! We don’t need them! they are trash!!
Now Mencfilt.dll is for storage card encrypt. If you don’t use it, you can delete it as well. Have you had this experience where after flashing a new Rom every thing in storage card can’t show any more!!!! but its still use the space in the card. Yes it's because of this file only.
**NOTE: There are some device in which removing these files causes system issues so be careful. But only a few devices

As I used a german 'qwertz' keyboard and a smaller splash screen, these files are just overwritten in my rom. These are backups.
I skip the Touchscreen alignment at first bootup (it doesn't work anymore after changing initflashfiles.dat)
Did you ever try to use * as a joker with the search program? Totally useless, so it is overwritten by a better app, renamed to: shfind.exe.

It didn't bother, everything worked 'till I deleted some files in startmenue and rearanged the programs. But noone told me that he missed the feature. Approximately 300 users over all. Even if some of them only tested. For me it was OK, and I'm still running it from the very first day, without any need of a new hard reset 'till now.
muckelmaus, why do you have a smaller startup screen?
I reduced the size of the files to get some kB/sectors free, as my rom is full of third party apps.

As I remember you can put JPG file as welcomehead
there is 2 solutions:
Save as jpg file and then just rename into .png
Save as jpg and change registry entry in redist dpi 96
by the way:
look at this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen]
"MSBitmap"="\\windows\\welcomehead.96.png"
"MSTimeout"=dword:7530 ; 30000 milliseconds
"CarrierBitmap"="\\windows\\welcomehead.96.png"

maybe we could have 2 splash screens and change their duration on screen
So, when combined with bootloader 2 splashes (as I post tutorial to change it easly) we can have 4 splashes.
Good for doing PC boot images as I did before hima died my work in attachment
