I was getting frustrated with the problems I was facing with GPRS in i-mate's new rom. Some people couldn't connect and disconnect properly, I personally was suffering from having my Red Phone button disconnect GPRS when I merely pressed it, not held it, every time.
I got pissed off with it last night, and decided to find the problem once and for all.
First, I cleared my extended rom, and did a hard-reset. I then noted that the red phone button sound reverted to normal, and that the GPRS didn't disconnect unless I held the red phone button. In other words, I discovered my problem lied within the extended rom.
So, then I went through cab by cab and tried to find out exactly which one caused the problem. All the obvious choices did not. I then stumbled upon the problem cab; the I-Mate customization cab (Default_ImateV112.002.cab). This little 74kb cab was causing my GPRS to disconnect whenever I pressed the Red Phone button. So, I recooked my extended rom without that cab, then hard reset. Voila, GPRS was working properly.
My comparison of the new I-mate customization cab with the older one, brought up one small difference in CM_Entries.xml, and it was exactly this small change that resulting in GPRS disconnecting when the Red phone button is pressed instead of held.
The lines that cause the problem are:
<characteristic type="Registry">
<characteristic type="HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone">
<parm name="Flags2" value="8" datatype="integer" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
The section of code that I identified to be causing the problem creates a key named "Flag2" within HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone. What this does is actually creates the Disconnect button we now see in the Connectivity bubble. It seems that enabling this button is the root of my (and perhaps other people's) GPRS problems.
Here is the information on this code:
To get just the disconnect/time online in your bubble, Tweak the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Phone]
"Flags2"=dword:00000000 = no button disconect in buble con.
"Flags2"=dword:00000008 = button disconect on buble con.
"Flags2"=dword:00000010 = button disconect and time con. on buble conection (hex)
Removing the key "Flags2" solves the problem, but removes the disconnect button (I assume this is the same as setting it to 0). The new default 8 setting is the problem. Setting it to 16, which adds the button and a connection length timer seems to be problem free from my testing, so if you like the disconnect button, I recommend setting it the key to 16 (DECIMAL, 00000010 HEX) and giving that a try, and if you aren't satisfied then remove the key altogether. Reset after any changes to the registry to see the results.
THE CABS BELOW ARE NOT PATCHES. THE SHORT TERM SOLUTION IS TO CHANGE THE REGISTRY KEY. THESE CABS ARE MEANT TO BE REPLACEMENTS FOR THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM CAB IN YOUR EXTENDED ROM, NOT TO BE RUN SEPERATELY
I have also made 2 cabs meant to replace the old Default_ImateV112.002.cab within your extended rom for a more perminent solution.
http://qlink.queensu.ca/~3bsg/16Flags2/Default_ImateV112.002.cab : Sets the key Flags2 to 16, keeping the disconnect button and adding a timer
http://qlink.queensu.ca/~3bsg/RemovedFlags2/Default_ImateV112.002.cab : Stops the key Flags2 from ever being created, removed the disconnect button[/b]
Sweet, (still looking for the coffee hack), thanks

Maybe imate fixed this already???
I did fresh install from imate website and after reading your post, I checked my Registry and it is already "16"
Let me verify this.
Edit:
I went through a lot of trouble to disprove this.
I just went to clubimate.com, downloaded a fresh rom, reinstalled the extended rom, and can disprove this. Nothing has changes. Flags2 is still set to 8 by default. Problems still occur with GPRS.
Great solution! Applied this to my pda2k and JAM and could not be happier. Make sure you upload it to the FTP.
Better why not use Phone Alarm 1.13.2 latest version. It does the same as explained and I am using it.....
Re: Solution to i-mate 1.40 GPRS woes
Your registry hack works very nicely...thanks.
My problem is more than not after a phone call the GPRS will not connect again until I either do a reset of the ppc or go into flight mode and come back out.
Any ideas on a fix for that?
tekhound, you have changed your registry and then reset your device to apply the changes? Go into your registry and change the Flags2 key in question to 16, then reset your device (or run the Flags2 = 16 cab I included in the first post). If that doesn't fix your problem, then your problem is different than those faced by others.
TLO...
I actually had your cab file already installed. I went ahead and deleted the reg key all together. Hopefully that will work, since I use the GPRS for my push email more than I use the phone.
Thanks for all of your hard work. I find it amazing that groups like this and people like you seem to know more about this stuff than the people who make or support them.
Update....
I was still having problems even after i made the changes and uploaded the cab TLO made. No luck on keeping the the GPRS not only connected, but be able to connect it again with out having to reset.
I decided to copy all of the extended rom files out completey and do a hard reset. Everything has been working fine so far without any disconnect or reconnect problems I experienced before. I have since gone back in and added the battery patch and a few other files I wanted.
I will add a cab at a time and hopefully see when the cab causing the problem is installed.
I have a sneaky feeling that one of those cabs does something that makes the BA not talk to the US T-Mobile network correctly. I have seen a few post on different boards from people that use the US T-Mobile network have similar problems when they updated their imate PDA2K device to the new version.
I will post with any updates.
Thanks again for everyones support!
i would like to know what you find, i had a similar problem before the Imate rom was released; gprs would not reconnect after the first connection without a soft reset. What worked for me was not installing the AKU26_RC20 Caller id cab. I was already using GBSOFT Tweak to enable the disconnect and time display in the gprs bubble. But other people reported no problem using that cab so may just be coincedence.
My experience is (unfortunately) consistent with tekhound's, even after installing the TLO's cab. Although TLO's cab is still an improvement with the Disconnect button and counter. I am also with T-Mobile in the US.
Odd. Then perhaps the different GPRS problems to not share the same cause.
I must say, I am not facing the same problem as you guys are. After changing the key to 16 and reset, GPRS has worked flawlessly.
However, I think it is important to note that everyone who is still facing GPRS problems is in the United States (I would assume using T-Mobile). Are all your devices SX66's as well?
I'm having problem using my i-mate JAM.
i-mate's forum led me here via howardforums....i-mate recently released their JAM ROM upgrade and that looks to be where the GPRS connection problems have surfaced. They are not being reported as specific to T-Mobile or even the US. Users with different carriers and/or the ROM for another country (at least saw UK referenced) are finding the bug.
From a quick scan of i-mate's forum for the PDA2K, similar symptoms are being reported after the ROM upgrade for that device.
I used the new hacked .cab for a few days and had no problems whatsoever when I installed it from a hard reset WHEN NOT INSTALLING THE EXTROM. The GPRS ran great and no longer disconncted with the touch of the red phone button.
Unfortunately, I had problems with "Phone Pad" among others which I thought could be solved by installing the full 1.11 EXTROM. After installing the extrom and the .cab fix, my phone pad was working fine, but now the damn "Unknown reason" Error message is back again which leads me to belive that there is something in the extrom that is messing stuff up.
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to head back to 1.06WWE now for the 5th time. It's pain in the ass as I have to set up my exchange server settings all over again. I'm getting really tired of Imate's piss poor programming. Do they not test their own software? I noticed problems minutes into the new ROM. It's unacceptable.
Well, that's my ranting raving for the evening. I'm sure that after I spend my Saturday reinstalling everything back to 1.06 that I-Mate will release a file to fix everything. :-(
Maybe it's me....but I thought that this was the B/A forum.....

I also have the same problem with the new rom in HK. So, I can confirm that this is not operator related. It also happened to magician as well.
I installed again a previous version of wireless manager from other rom and will report later. Not the 'Remove wifi logo' one but 'Default_OEM_BA_09080401.CAB'.
thanks, TLO! I appreciate all of your hard work! This added the timer for me and doesn't seem to kill my GPRS connection when I hit the hang up button more than once, as it was before.
Now if I can just get the darn device to actually consistently MAKE a connection without requiring a soft reset...
The 'Default_OEM_BA_09080401.CAB' is no good.
It also had the same effect.
I hard reset my device and change the autoconfig file to NOT to install any patch. I then check the connections by turning on and off again and it's working so far. Will report again tomorrow.
Cheers,
I have installed the 1.12.10 GSM on it after making backups with aWizard. I am happy to report that it does work and that it does speed up the initial connection. Before (with 1.09.11 I beleive) I could log into (enter my PIN) and would still have some time before I would connect and get signal bars. It also seemed to increase refresh rates of the bars. Now the signal is usually found before I even finish entering my PIN muchless the today screen loading.
These tests were made in my basement at my house where I typically have been getting 1-3 bars. now to test 1.13.10 and 2.8 OS to see if it works.
I will say I thought it broke at first because I couldn't get my PC to talk to it after it reloaded, then I did another soft reset and the boot screen the second time didn't list the GSM version, even though the OS did see and use GSM. I re-ran the CID unlock procedure again since I could talk to the phone again. Reset again and GSM ver was on the boot screen again.
I also swapped out the boot screen for a bmp and that worked wonderfully. my only question is if there is a way to swap out the booting screen of the OS and not just the IPL Rom.
cheers,
ET
I have just done the RUU install of 2.16.9.101 which also upgrades IPL/SPL to 2.16. It changed my radio version to 2.7.10 and my protocol version is 413.1.0.3. This ROM date is 2/6/06.
Immediate differences are the battery notification is now at the top where on Cingular's ROM it was at the bottom next to the comm switch program. That and everything is I-Mate branded. No Get Good, but instead now I have I-Mate backgammon and Skype. And instead of the Cingular Mail link now there is an I-Mate mail link.
I will update later with more.
More... OS ver 5.1.195 build 14847.2.0.0 IDK if this is different or not.
Update 11AM: I have tested more. ZPhone themes I can't seem to install... IDK why but with the original Cingular ROM I couldn't either. The original ROM had a bug that used the proxy of the modem setting on the wifi setting making wifi not work unless you went and disabled it since it is enabled by default. This new rom after installing "Cingulcustomize_No_Emails.cab" to get MediaNet back, wifi just works. Even with the Proxy set on the modem connection. My Bluetooh headset (Jabra HT800) works great. Comm Manager is real nice. Even showing you the status of SMS and GPRS/EDGE connection. I want to play with it a little more to see if I can control those two or not. Gone from teh Cingular ROM is the ability to click on the Edge status icon in the notification area and tell it to turn on Wifi. But the Turn on Flight Mode still exists under the Cell Strength bar. Signal strength is comperable to the 1.12.10 radio rom I had before the upgrade. And IDK if it is taking longer to load from a reset or not, but before the Phone radio would be up and running just as I was finishing putting in my PIN unlock. But now it is running and connected before I can even start to input it. Just observation, that extra second doesn't mean anything.
I also have the 8125, so I am curious if the Imate ROM will cause any problems after the upgrade. I am not sure I want to wait a few more months until Cingular gets around to providing their upgrade.
Some other posters with the test/beta Qtek AKU 2.0 rom reported that they had trouble with the device resetting itself and problems with Wi-Fi. Let us know if you experience any issues with this ROM.
How has EDGE speed been, any improvements over the shipped ROM? Have you tried push email?
ok, i updated my 8125 to the new rom and am having two issues atm. first, the phone signal icon and the battery icon on the today screen is cut off so i only see the edge icon. secondly, i cannot start wifi at all, no matter what i do :\ (it looks like it's thinking but doesn't actually turn on ) now i did apply the cingular extended rom to this so i dont know if that caused both issues or not. as for edge performance, i'm in an area with bad signal so i couldnt exactly test it. i'm going to be clearing storage tonight and see if that fixes both issues or not. i haven't tested push e-mail as clubimates servers AREN'T supporting direct push (ie they don't have SP2 installed or have it enabled on exchange).
Locked up
Well I am noticing that it is locking up if I let it sit for a while to where I can't bring it back up. I have disabled the lock code to see if that fixes it.
I would have a feeling that the problems you are having are because of the enhanced rom difference. it won't hurt to try it as is like I did since you are having problems with it.
were can I fine install
I look for the rom in the ftp but there is no RUU install of 2.16.9.101 can you please tell me where can I fin this rom
thank you

thank you for giving the info on where to get the link. I have been away from a pc today.
as an update: the phone seems to be stable with the new rom (I am actually using the phone now using edge and it seems faster than my old phone was which was a nokia.)
I haven't had it lock up on me since I uninstalled battery pack pro, disabled lock code, and uninstalled skype & backgammon so take your pick as to what fixed it. I will do some more expereriments to try and figure iit out.

i finally fixed the signal strength icon (but don't ask me how), but wifi is still borked
no more problems, lock ups or otherwise
My guess with my problems were related to Battery Pack Pro demo. Even on the original rom I couldn't get it to work right with the assignable hard keys.
Anyway, I did not modify the original EXE one bit like darkjedi said he did. He seems to be much more advanced as I don't know how to do what he did and not that familier with its registry settings yet. But I naver had any problems with Wifi nor with icon placement.
My home wifi does use WPS-PSK TKIP using a Netgear WG302. Battery life seems good, but I do get a little crackle every now and then on my end of the bluetooth handsfree. People I talk to haven't said they hear anything other than perfect clarity. I would have been told if they heard anything since part of my reason to spend the money now rather than later was my voice and signal quality on my old Nokia was getting to be bad and they wouldn't waste a second ragging me if voice and signal problems were re-appearing. But mostly the crackle is few and far between and usually when my headset is on the other side of my body or I am a few feet away from my phone.
i didn't modify the original EXE, i installed it as normal, then after the fact, copied the cingular extended ROM then installed each cab manually. i didn't get a chance to try wifi before i applied the extended rom, but i just might hard reset and try that.
i dnt see the rush to upgrade if u have a cingular 8125 since there goa offer rom upgrades for the unit. with all the bugs i rather just get a ad2 bt plugin (wish they made it) and just do that
what roms do they offer? On my past phones I have had to have major problems before they would flash a new version of the Rom (my last 2 symbian phones).

ok... the only cab I installed for Cingular was the one I mentioned earlier. I have since installed spb power plus and their weather app and I am still stable. Not one failuer and my bluetooth is actually acting better from some reason. I was working on my car today with teh phone in the car and I was about 10 feet away without any noise or other problems.

Is there any settings to configure edge? I only see GPRS in the connections section.
This version appears quite stable but's only my second day since upgrading my 8125 from the QTECH 2.8.7.102. I really like the Comm manager and the Push Email icon works great.
Thanks!
name of account
the only thing that I have notice so far is that the name of my celular company (I could see before upgrade) now i only see numbers.

On the new imate ROM I'm getting between 65 and 110 kbps on edge. Latency is still crap at about 1.5 seconds on average, but that's what it's always been for me.
Direct push is great. Assuming you have Exch SP2 installed, push works without any other changes. I'm averaging between 7 and 10 seconds for an entry to push out after it gets to Exchange. I haven't installed the device management tools yet, but I'll do that soon and let you know how well they work.
I just noticed wifi isn't working. If I enable it in comm manager, the button is ringed in green as if it's on, but the left green led does not blink and it does not detect my open, unsecured access point. I did install the cabs from my original cingular extended rom, and one of those appears realted to wifi, but not sure what it does. I'll mess around some more and see what I can do. I'm not totally heartbroken that wifi is messed up, but it does bug me that I don't know why it aint working.

Where did you get the "Cingulcustomize_No_Emails.cab" file? I have searched everywhere and cannot find it! Help?
i new to this whole pocket pc thing, and i found this site and started upgrading my t-mobile mda. first i upgraded the rom to the k-jam upgrade and everything worked fine. then i started messing with the registry with registry wizard. that was fine also. but as soon as i hit the edge icon tweak, i can no longer connect to gprs. i get a msg saying
"Cannot connect. make sure your phone is turned on, or tap settings to check your connection settings. "
can anyone help me. i didnt alter the settings from when it was working so im unsure of what the problem is. any help is greatly appreciated
sounds like ou ahve been doing a fair amount of tweaking. Even in the registry. Are you sure it was the Edge icon tweak that did it as my Cingular 8125 is running 2.16.9.1WWE and I have made that change and mine works fine. My wonder is if one of the previous changes didn't take affect until a reload or a new program load, and that is what actually caused the problem. I loaded some cingular cabs yesterday and it broke activesync.

yah i know. but even after i restored my original registry settings i still cannot connect. when i try to connect, the window that shows gprs is trying to connect flashes 2x then it reads the msg i posted. any ideas
none here... I hope someone else can help, or you can hard reset and try to do the changes slowly soft reset a couple of times after each change until you figure out which one cased it. Each change including installed programs.
Sorry
mine does the same thing and I have been able to get it to connect without reset. Tap your signal bar on screen and turn on flight mode than turn off it will reset connections. It happens after every sync or charge for me and once we are able to unlock the cid and install the cing ext rom it might go away.
i actually just got rid of the program and it works now
Hey All-
Rather then adding to the large Helmi thread, I figured it would be best to start my own...
In short today I upgraded from TuMa v1.3 to Helmi's new ROM: Helmi_BA_WM2k5_AKU_2.3_32mb_v1.rar
Everything went fine during the upgrade, I set the Operator Code to T%CID? which was retrieved by using GetDeviceData.exe and the upgrade went smoothly... but now the phone functionality doesn't work at all. I've tried with two different SIM's, one being a T-Mobile and the other a Cingular. Both just show no service when inserted, although if I place those SIM's into other phones everything works properly without issue and I get 'full bars' (I have another Cingular 8125 and a T-Mobile SDA).
Here is what I have done so far:
- Reupgraded the Radio to the latest rev 1.15
- Recreated the nk.nbf again with retyping the operator code
- Reupgraded to the ROM to Helmi's
- Reunlocked SIM with xdadev_all_unlock-v1.5.exe
... and still no phone service.
Any suggestions on how to get the phone functionality to work properly? Its pretty much useless right now...
Thanks!
tempie23
I'm not sure that T%CID is right for an operator code... I know for O2 UK it's O2___001 and I'm sure a T-Mobile code isT-MOB101, both of these are 8 digits... check you're devicedata output again and use the setoperator.bat to set it properly, then try again
It's all good clean fun

I have the same operator code T%CID? but only on WM5. When i use 2003SE it is DANGA001.
tempie23
I had such error on TuMa 1.4 but reinstalling the ROM helped for a while. Then I tried helmi's ROM and the problem gone. But a couple of days ago it appeared once and reflashing did not help. What I done is downgraded to 2003SE, did a hardreset and reinserted SIM. The phone came back to work. Then installed helmi's ROM again. Now it is working for a day without any trouble, HOPE it's gone forever.
Tried a few things...
I tried downgrading and then reupgrading, but it still is stuck. No phone service. Interestingly enough the LED for the phone doesn't even come on anymore.
Interestingly enough when I select the phone settings from the upper menu I'm getting a Popup message stating "The phone is not ready. Wait 15 Seconds and try again." Obviously waiting 15 seconds does nothing...
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
tempie23
sometimes (happened to me) the operator info corrupts when upgrading to WM5
copy the files attached to the update directory and run 'MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe'

No it is not, it sounds like he has the same SX 66 that I have.
The ID is = AT%CID?
I posted this in this thead Here
read my above post, it can happen to anyone when upgrading to any wm5, mine happened the very first time i upgraded (TuMa 1.3), i dont know how it happens, but it seems to be permanent even with further reflashes (haven't tried 2k3)

HI.
Sorry for my post, but I did not "get" how to fix the "NO Service" error:
This is what I've done today with Helmi_BA_WM2k5_AKU3.5_v1.4.CF2 by baniaczek:
Hi all.
Today finally spent some time, trying to upgrade my Qtek 9090.
Everything went fine:
1st) Did a SD backup of my current settings;
2nd) Updated ROM with SetOperator to my Operator (got from getdevice.txt);
2nd) Updated without problems;
Then used the Qtek by 5 minutes (inclusively i did a phone call), after that could no longer get the "phone" working - exactly when I received a call, the phone "gone out" and never more. After several soft resets and hard resets the phone was always with "no service" message (but strangely, I could go to settings phone, and look for "the broadcasting" networks).
I swaped the SIM to another phone and it was working, never the less I got another working sim, but the problem continues (btw, I always have the PinCode disabled, and I remember now that I forgot to test enabling PinCode request!!!).
Then, just in case I downgraded the phone to W2003SE, again, and everything was working fine.
My radio was 1.12. So upgraded radio to 1.15, and started over again but with no sucess.
When I downgraded once again, the Qtek works fine with either RADIO versions or sims.
Has anyone got this "nice feature"?????
Is there any overcame solution? (My only missing test is to enable Pincode, and test if it works?)
tks for any help
I'm having the same issue here as well, tried the comm manger on and off and disable and enable it. Still makes no difference, someone please help me out, I can't get anyone to help me

I was texting my gf while i was out and kept on even though the battry gave me a warrny that its really low .. i ignored and kept SMS's her until it went off.
i went home charged my device but its not connecting to the network. it shows either "No Service" (where it shows X beside the signal tower) or "Searching" (where it shows ! beside the signal tower).
Please anyone knows how to turn it on im really in a bad situation here.
Note: just to let you know im using WM5 Hemi's rom and upgraded it today to Xplode's rom just hoping it would help.
Well when i tried another sim on my blueangel it worked and my sim card on another mobile it worked also. im really losing my brain

anyways thanks alot everyone for visiting
Hi,
All I can suggest is to re-install radio rom! prob 1.15.
If not that then ensure flight mode is NOT active, and battery's fully charged
Also when you reset BA, on first screen does the R show a none?
If so reset, twice, its a common problem with BA and WM5, it isn't able to intialise the radio rom before WM5 boots.
It seems wierd that another sim worked on your BA, must be a faulty/damaged sim.
I also note you've tried the non-working sim on another phone and that works! Wierd that too!
Hope that helps,
Sunny
Have you tried to manually select the network in the "Phone" settings screen? I've heard of similiar problems being fixed by that.
well after i asked here and there and got disappointed with I-Mate people.. they know nothing at all
an IT in my company told me the problem is with my sim card. its damaged cause of the change in the battry power (as he says) it damaged the frequency that my mobile use to read the sim so there for it would work on any mobile except mine.
so i would change the sim but it needs me ages to get free and do that.
THANKS ALOT TO EVERYONE ATLEAST READ MY THREAD OR TRIED TO HELP
YOU GUYS HERE ARE THE BEST
By the way
sunny: the Radio is already 1.15 from ages. but thanks alot for trying to help me.
Fraser: I tried to manualy select the network but it says there is no network which is funny cause there is 4 networks in my area.. actuly im working with the same operator so im inside the tower LOL. the signal streth is the best here.
Thanks alot mates
No problem!
Thats what we're here for!

Same problem
I once had the same problem. Now I'm no genius when it comes to these phones and it actually took me a whole week to get an idea of what the hell happened to my phone. Basically, these phones are Quad Band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) and for some reason after I upgraded I lost my signal. I found a little application that let me reselect my band (its not built into windows for some reason) and that solved my problem. I just selected "Auto select" and the problem was solved after a soft reset.
Now, I can not remember what that application was but maybe that can give you an idea of what to search for.
No Service issue

Hi, is there more 'democratic' way to resolve this issue than reseting BA twice?
After installation of xplode's R4 for noobs an old version of R 1.06 was left on BA. Thinking that this was a reason for No Service of the phone I dumped latest R , but double f..reseting necessity still persists ...
Is that a normal thing to reset twice such an advanced device when you want even just to call smbdy? Thanks
there is a lil bug in my roms, after totally draining both bateries when you power it on it says NONE for radio you have to soft reset it again in order to work. I have never had a band selection problem but it is possible reason for this

Hi hi there! First of all please accept my deepest appreciation for such a great work you have done to make us - PPC ordinary users - little bit more happy Just one small note - is it possible to upgrade your downlodable R4 file with all necessary ROMs - Radio, etc., etc. With the intention that every Noob trying to upgrade his/her BA, should do it in a push of one button - not searching for separate latest ROMs and HowTo instructions? Thanks for your time!
P.s. Sorry it seems came out little bit off topic....
well it is possible but i have no time to do it. or you can try to copy the radio nbf file into the folder of the nk.nbf and run the upgrade utility
Any solution on this matter ? I am using Helmi MW6 ROM with radio 1.15.00 and i'm having the same problem.
I've searched the forum but found no solution yet.
