Skype is the anwser
Wanna use voip. Skype has the free answer as long as you stay on the net. Of the net is at local charges. Check it out at WWW.Skype.com
Enjoy
Skype is a closed product and you are stuck with their pricing for out-of-net calls. Use a softphone based on SIP or, better yet IAX as that will give you no headache when using public hotspots.
If you'd like to try the demo of a new VoIP product for PPC (which will come out soon) send me a private mail. Please also give details which model PPC you are using and an email address to send things to.

So my Vario III finally arrived today and I've had chance to give it a nice charge and get it setup how I like. Hence, I thought I'd drop a few impressions for those of you waiting for yours to arrive...
The look: It doesn't have the black frontage of the HTC model, but it does have a very nice brushed metal thing going on. The T-Mobile branding is kept low-key with their logo and a simple "MDA" at the bottom of the screen. The Internet button has the Web n' Walk logo. There is nothing at all on the back of the device. I'll try and get a picture of it for you, but I think the only cameras around here are on phones, so it won't be great.
The software: I panicked a bit when I'd done the initial screen calibration and the T-Mobile customisation kicked in... I let it do its thing though, and I'm pleasantly surprised! There's no obvious branding shown anywhere in any of the programs, apart from the Web n' Walk icon and, of course, the homepage of PIE defaults the T-Mobile portal.
The Touch style front end is in full effect works as you'd expect.
There's an installation of F-Secure Anti Virus on here. I'm not sure if it comes with the HTC version, but it doesn't appear to be licensed at all. As soon as the trial runs out I'll be removing it.
One thing that I'd suggest changing immediately is the awful T-Mobile ring tones that are set for the phone ringing, along with a bunch of message alerts and reminders. Oh how I hate those tunes!
Bundled software: The CD is pretty minimalistic but does feature a GPRS monitor and Sprite Backup. There's no Outlook and no TomTom Taster Edition.
That's all I can think of worth telling you for now. If there's anything you want to know, I'll try my best to find out for you.
Does it have the HTC Today plugin on the today screen?
The large digital clock and weather information plus the notifications and tabs for launcher and photo contacts?
I ordered my Vario III Today as a free upgrade!! It arrives tomorrow
Sounds like that's the Touch style front end I mentioned.
It has everything you listed. I must say I'm pleased with how well the weather bit works. Added to that the speed of establishing a data connection and then downloading stuff is far, far quicker than my old MDA Pro (Universal).
I'm glad they got the right device out to you this time.
I managed to get mine ordered at 08:30 this morning and mine should be here for lunchtime tomorrow.
Bummer about the lack of TomTom taster or Outlook. I imagine Tmob have still got an arrangement with CoPilot for SatNav bundles. I'll have to look for a cheap Exchange provider as some of them are giving away copies of Outlook 2007.
How fast is your data speed? and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the Tmob ROMs don't exhibit the SOD that some have experienced.

That would make sense as to why TomTom isn't included. I never thought of that. Luckily I have a copy of TomTom 6 that I can use anyway.
Data speeds have been great. Connecting to the UMTS network here is super fast and download speeds have far exceeded what I got from my Universal, although this is downloading virus definitions and weather reports. I haven't tried general Internet browsing just yet.
I can't comment on HSDPA speeds as it's not available here.

Free stuff always makes me a bit wary. What's in it for them? Do they send you spam, or attach ads to your mail? Is it possible to tie it in with my existing email service (which I control)?
I suppose I could go to the website and find out myself...

I use it for over a year now and never got any spam form mail2web or nasty pop-ups / ads...
They give it away as a free service for personal use and you only have to pay when you want it for professional use...
I never found any strings attached and I can say I've used it quite extensively
I really wish I knew when (or approximately when) T-mobile US plans to release their variant. This way, I can decide to wait or get the unlocked version (and possibly have to switch service providers due to 3g bands)

I signed up before you even replied, figuring it must be worth a shot. Signup was painless, then I just had to tell my mail server to forward incoming mail to my mail2web account.
Setup the account on my phone, gave it a quick test and it works a treat! Thanks a lot for the recommend.

Funny you should say that; the Live applications are somewhat absent. Is there a messaging program I can download somewhere? I always used to use Agile Messenger on this plan until it stopped being free and de-activated itself.
just install the windows live messenger cabs flying arounds in these forums
Hmm. I installed Fring and it didn't seem to be able to connect. I'll try again later though.
I'm a bit hesitant to install the Live stuff thanks to its importing all of my messenger contacts into the phone contacts. Something I really want to keep separate!
I'll keep fiddling with 3rd party programs and keep you posted.

Well I can say they haven't blocked it for the Touch as I gave a college the cab of Windows Live
I use Palringo on my Kaiser on T-Mobile (But my handset is unbranded) and it works.
From what I can tell, palringo seems best. Supports MSN / Yahoo / more... and has PTT Plus it is free...

This is pretty frigging ridiculous. From what I can see, syncronising contacts and calendar relies on having Outlook. How am I supposed to sync if I don't have it?
Got mine delivered this morning.
I havnt got the GPS to work so far (applications connect fine just the skies too cloudy to pick up any satellites).
Coming from the o2 Exec im finding the keyboard a bit small, and some of the keys having been moved around but nothing a weeks of use won't fix. Though using the keyboard while plugged into USB isn't all that comfortable.
The tmobile branding isn't as bad as i expected, though i would have preferred the black finish HTC look.
I've had no problems with connectivity. HSDPA and 3G seem to flip back and forth every now and then.
I accidentally deleted that OZ instant messenger, where can I get it again?
I have been scouring for free IM alternatives but haven't found any good ones, so I want to just go back to the default one.

It depends if you want IM'ing thorough data plan or text messages. If Data than I use the WLM included with version 10.6.0034.0800. If through your text messaging plan that Oz is the way to go I guess. I would have a look at P1taters downloads, he may have a copy of both of those IIRC.
honestly it doesn't matter, I have unlimited everything. thanks
I've personally always enjoyed Palringo. Seems to be low overhead, and connects to a good variety of services (AIM, Y!, Google, MSN, ICQ etc....) I believe it is still free.
http://www.palringo.com/download.php
I use BeeJive IM for now, untill you have to pay for it. It's really easy to use and it has an iphone feel to it.
look right above your thread and youll see a new thread about AIM for windows mobile new software is out now....you will want to use this software for im'ing way more the OZ...OZ is a trash software and it doesnt let you even sign on unless you connect to ATT data connection. You cant use it through your wifi because ATT "forces" you to connect to their data internet and charge you to be able to use OZ....its trash software and theres no point in even looking for the install cab in your device, get the new AIM for windows mobile that just came out, trust me...or even palringo or any other im client service other then OZ
palringo
I have to agree the Oz software is crap .. Palringo is decent.. just doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the oz but it runs pretty smooth
The new JiveTalk is very impressive (though in beta still) and it is free
Device>Windows>C_OZPocketPC.cab will reinstall OZ Instant Messenger

How does it depend on something. The guy said he wanted the OZ one and didn't like the others. I don't see there being anything dependend.. At least tell the guys to search or something, don't just say, "well I don't like that software" lol.
oh nice, looks like at least one person addressed his issue. I will give some backup support incase that doesn't work. Check this thread, and remember. USE SEARCH, this took me 1 minute to find.

Yea, if you have unlimited everything, go for Beejive's JiveTalk for WM or try out the new AIM for WM.
But definitely, JiveTalk.

Oh really, I thought I answered his question pretty well. Some people still don't understand that some of the IM apps out there are either Data or SMS. Let's think if the guy didn't have a GD data plan and he used a program that depended on data to send messages, bam huge bill and then he'd come back here *****ing to me about it. And I don't recall saying that I don't like OZ. You might want to read and comprehend the whole post before you start to flame someone next time genius.

Thanks for the notice. Been waiting for a version other than iSkoot.
Be carefull. I just installed it and from what I understood you have to pay even when someone calls YOU !
In short, this "Skype Lite" connects to skype servers via your minutes, not voip. Nuff said.
Update:
Truphone has been ported to Android.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.truphone.android
Where's the package to be found? Doesn't seem to actually be on the market despite it showing at cryket. Is this location restricted?
Truphone does NOT work in packet mode. Here is the response I got from Truphone support:
"Unfortunately, Truphone on the Google Android is designed to work only with
Truphone Anywhere. It is not possible to make free calls over WiFi on that
handset. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
If you have any further queries please reply to this email for assistance.
Regards,

What would be neat is if someone could write an extension of some sort to the dialer that allows calling over SIP. All you would have to do is input your carrier information, set preferences on how you want calls sent/received through the VoIP connection and the phone itself would handle the rest.

Argh crap. Upon further investigation you're correct. Should have done my due diligence =(
I'll move it down to the partial-voip section and continue waiting for a full solution =)
You should also add Voxofon to the partial VOIP list. I tried it and it has to dial a US number before connecting you to your deisred number.

looking 4 a G1 VoIP solution (any experiences?)
Hi there,
greetings to all - 1st post here ;-)
I live in Chile and have an unlimited 3G data chip for which I can also get the most basic 10$ voice plan. We do have really good 3G coverage here!
I do make quite some calls abroad, thus I was looking into VoIP solutions for the G1.
Is anybody using their G1 as VoIP-device? ... what voip clients are you using? IScoot? ... what "carrier" do you use?
thx for sharing your thoughts.
al
Sip or IAX VOIP Client for Android G1?
Does anyone know of a working SIP or IAX VOIP client that is working on Android G1?
TIA
topkat0
can anyone still see this on the market- i can't see it- please don't tell me they have made it available to US customers only! With my provider i get 4000 free skype minutes as part of my data plan so wanna see if they work thru the G1 (of course they don't support the G1 so who knows.....
Anyone got an apk for skype lite for android?

I searched for "Skype" and "Lite version of Skype beta" came up. Is that what your looking for?
There is also an app called "iSkoot for Skype".
Here is the description.
"iSkoot for Skype delivers the features of Skype to your mobile phone. View your contacts, IM, make & receive Skype calls and place SkypeOut calls to phone numbers worldwide. iSkoot routes calls via the voice channel to offer unsurpassed call quality"
Sorry.... I don't subscribe to Skype so for me... it's not really worth downloading or really looking into but I hope that this points you in the right direction and is some help.
yeah i can see them on cryket but not on my market- did a search and finally found an apk for skype lite- will try it out tomorrow.
I saw the iskoot thread on here saying it wasn't available to those not in USA so maybe skype is the same.... either way, i now have it
Funny thing is i have the app APK Installer but being an adventurous person i had a crack at using the adb to install it- took me a while- for some reason i had to do adb remount and after that it worked perfectly!
Nothing available yet, just some "lite" versions that use your minutes.

basically
Please put a setting in the current version, or make a new version that is wifi only.
Currently using skype in my G1 i use my t-mobile minutes, and what ever skype credit is needed to make the call.
Given this situation.. why would i ever use skype on my android based phone?

please keep bumping it on the skype side, i would love this to happen.
Use sipdroid.
If you really want to use skype, try http://www.skype.com/business/form/sip-beta/ -- though I can't imagine a reason why you would want to use skype instead of a proper sip provider.
Well i am a long time skype user, have a skype acc, have a positive balance, i have all my contacts there...
And to be honest, i have never heard of sip for voip before.
I will download it and try it out of course.
A challenge !!!!
Does anyone know of an app which is a 1-click call divert app. I was using one called 'EasyForward' but this no longer works, and has been withdrawn from the market.... can anyone help... PLEASE !! this is an everyday use app.....
Thanks
Ian
PS: The app enables the phone to direct all incoming calls to a user defined number....
what no one ???? no one knows of a way to do this ????
Well, I could code one, but it will take some time. Meanwhile, if you're using Sense, you can set send calls directly to voice mail through the People app. Just edit your contact and check the "Send call directly to voice mail" option.
Could you code one ?? I would gladly PayPal you a few quid for your troubles, this would be of such use to me,, Basically I have 2 mobiles, one I use for work, and one for home. I want to be able just to click divert or cancel when i go to work, or come home, as I dont want to have to tell everyone 2 numbers. Also my HERO is too good a phone to risk getting damaged at work,,,,,,
Hey Ian, I'm a little busy but it's not that hard to code, just that I'm not too sure if it'd work on a 2.1 phone. I'm still a novice at Android coding, so give me a couple of days since I still have a Android assignment to complete for school. Meanwhile, since you're on sense, just go to Settings > Call settings > Call forwarding > Always forward. Give me a couple more days and I'll get you your app.
Thanks mate, but the pic is a bit out of date. I am using (and will continue to use) EzHero 1.0 / 2.1 -update 1 as it is, for me, the bees knees and does everything I want. fast, smooth and stable. If you could create one to work on this, I would be forever in your debt....
Cant wait....... YOU LIFE SAVER !!!
Ian
Alright no problem, I know a universal way already. I shall start working on it now, a couple of hours should suffice.
You could always go onto the market and get "Easy call forwarding" free...
Once set up with number you want to divert to, it is one touch only enable and disable.
Use it all the time when switching between phones.
Cheers Phil-w
i would, but the developer has removed all support saying it was not getting support, so I can not install it on my phone now I have reflashed... I was using that for months and it was great,, thats my problem, now I can not install it...

Hey Ian, I've completed the prototype, I'll be publishing it to the Market in a short while. I'm still trying to make it save the number you want so you won't have to re-enter it again. I'm trying to recode what Easy Call Forwarding had from scratch, so give me some time before it's as good.
mate, thats great.. what have you called it so I know what to look for ?
Hey Ian, sorry for the late reply. It's called Quick Forward.

i dont understand what you mean mate ??? i simply put in the mobile number to divert to,, 078........
Alright Ian, let's talk on IM, it's faster. PMed you my MSN.
You could always create couple of contacts in your contacts list.
1 for divert cancel containing ##21#
1 for divert containing **21*07966666666# (put your mobile in here !)
Then just use +, shortcut, Person, then select the person i.e Divert or divert cancel.. (or what ever you have saved them as) and place on one of the panels home or where ever you fancy.
Works great on the UK Orange network..
