I havent seen anyone else mention this, i duno if its a conflict or what.
If i use my google search bar off the today screen, or i open PIE sometimes (havent nailed it down yet as to when) my PIE will open like its searching for the google search or the address i put in. HOwever all i get is a blank white screen?
Resetting the tilt seems to cure this, then i see it does the connecting to medianet blah blah.... is there some sort of hibernate mode or some thing im not aware of? (seems like if i leave the phone on all nite charging this happens)
thnx
sorry if i missed this topic
it's not something I've ever seen:maybe a bug with live search and your ROM: which are you using?
Maybe now is a good time to switch to Opera Mobile 9.5 and set that as your default browser. PIE is enough to make me throw my phone at the wall, and If i were forced to use it again I wouldn't keep my Windows Mobile device.
Each to their own though!
If you don't already have Opera Mobile the latest cab is here which also includes a cab to set it as the default for everything, including the search bar.
you can also download the attached cab which is a standalone google today plugin if you'd like to try a different option. Google made their own today screen search engine but it doesn't seem to be available despite only being released a month or so ago.....strange.
I get the white screen from time to time after putting in push email and having a constant data connection. I enabled the disconnect button to the top connection popup and after disconnecting the phone reconnects and all is well.
i will check out the opera i am using the google today plugin and i have it if anyone needs it.
Thats part of the problem when i use it from time to time PIE opens w/ a blank screen. And i have skyfire, but i have to say for some things i just dont wanna deal w/ the frustration of that stupid zoom button and lag on skyfire so i just use PIE for things like opening streaming content etc.
Could very well be a push email type of problem, i use it constantly w/ 3 or 4 different accounts.
Im using the latest AT&t minus the bloatware.
ITs almost like it wont initiate the medianet .... actually thats exactly what it is. Because once i restart, and i hit search or open PIE it instantly says connecting to medianet........ when its blank it just sits there, never even tries to connect.
One more observation... like i said i use the email alot. Sometimes when i go hit email, then goto>folders>pick an account. It (the email account) will pop up and say disconnecting (??) is it maybe hanging up in the email ? and thats why PIE wont open>? Its exactly (if youve ever had this happen) if you have OPERA open, and you try to use PIE, youll get nothing. (at least in my situation) until you close the other browser. Does that sound right? Ive had it happen serveral times to me, i use SPB so i hit close all then reopen PIE and it works. If this is normal, then id have to assume im somehow getting stuck (connected) to my email.
I have experienced this issue as long as I've had my Tilt.
It also affected my ability to download traffic updates on Smartphlow (a live traffic map for the Seattle area).
Same exact behavior, PIE would just give blank white screen. No change after clearing temp files etc... Soft reset would always get me back on with no trouble (other than the PITA of having to restart the phone).
Now I've recently moved to a house that sits in a reception hole so the Tilt is always bumping back and forth between 3G (1-2 bars) and Edge (4-5 bars). Since moving in 6 weeks ago I've not had the same problem.
It definitely seems related to the length of time that a data connection has been active. I previously could only go 1-2 days tops without having to restart the phone to get good data.
Incidentally though, mail never had a problem, just PIE and the traffic app (didn't try any other apps that I can think of that might have shown the same behavior).
Unfortunately I don't know the true cause or have a solid solution for it, just more of a "me too" post with additional detail in hopes it's helpful for someone to pin down the root cause and find a solution.
+1 to that, It happens to me often, like every few days, no matter what rom I'm on. It seems to only effect pocket ie, opera mobile still works, email still works etc... only pocket ie fails.
I can usually correct it by going into airplane mode and then back which is a bit faster than a soft reset but its still annoying.
I've been experiencing it on the stock ATT rom as well as the many roms I've gone through since getting my tilt. I'm primarily on edge but do go through 3g about once a week or so.

There is our answer then: simply stop using the dreadful Pocket Internet Explorer altogether. It's completely unsuited to QVGA screens and suffers from an inability to support HTML pages correctly and consistantly. Opera Mobile 9.5 on the other hand makes browsing beautiful. It's even a lot faster than PIE over GPRS.
I am having problems as well with PIE. It just refuses to connect to any data signal (Wifi, HSDPA, 3G). All of the other browsers work though. I am a mainly use opera mini, but that is not ideal for cirtain situations. I dont really like PIE but to be honest sometimes I need it as there are issues when I use Opera 9.5 (not being able to use the hardware keyboard, messing around with sound notification settings using the official beta). Has anybody out there got a solution that doesn't involve a hard reset? I have searched around and not found a suitable solution so far. By the way I am using a UK T-mobile Vario 3 with stock rom.
I just got my TD2 yesterday. Been trying to figure out the settings for the push internet, but i can't seem to find the option to use WiFi connection instead of data connection.
Also i realised that the scheduling doesnt allow to set the minute only the hour.
Does anyone have this problem?
No one has any problem using this feature?
If you have WiFi on it should just use it I guess? Otherwise what you can do is setup your preferred connection not to be the mobile web one so it doesn't try and connect to the net over GPRS/3G.
I tried using Wifi, but it doesnt work. I still need to manually pull the sites.
When your phone goes into standby the WIFI connection turns off to save the battery, so unless you have your phone set to never turn off and keep WIFI active all the time its unlikely that it will use WIFI to push internet pages to you. Very little point doing it that way since you'd never have the phone last long enough to get out of the house in the morning.
Oh I reckon I know what might be wrong. You also need to change the schedules of when the phone polls for sites. You do it by day and stuff and do a start time. Once you visit each site once then that'll start the ticker so to speak. Mine autodownloaded at the set intervals after that.
Thanks Shuflie, u have a good point.. there is no point updating it via wifi. It needs to use a data connection. Thanks
DaBountyHunter: Thanks for the advice.. but i really think the problem is that i dont have a data plan with my telco.. i cant rely on WIFI since it disables whenever the phone goes into standby.
hi,
i'm a little bit confused about this feature!
i addet 4 sites to my list and if i got it right, there is a grey arrow if its updating and a green if its finished! is that correct?
but, when i surf on a site with a green arrow i can only see the main page, because if i tip any link on this it says error!
thats a total mess, the deep of min one link is essential...
do i something wrong or is this feature only a dream!??
I believe it only updates the pages on the main page. It doesnt save the entire site (i wished it did) cos it seems rather redundant when it only saves the main page.
hopefully someone can make a fix that it also loads the linked pages but i think it takes up too much memory/battery life and for example on news sites you only need the headlines, and if you want to read the article you'll have to wait a bit.
(for the Dutch, use tweakers.net/nieuws on your phone, it loads the articles instead of headlines)
well then in my opinion this feature is senseless!
quite true.. senseless.. might as well just use RSS feeds.
I still haven't received my TD2 (seems like it takes time for other languages as I'm looking for a french one which should be shipped on the 8th of May) but I still have a question regarding push internet feature.
What happens when roaming? Is there a way to disable it while on another network? Like a "disable while roaming" feature? Knowing the fees for data roaming, I don't want to spend money every time I'm going in another country...
yes, there is a 'disable when roaming' feature.

i tried that, also tried many other things but i am almost defintely sure the 'add push page' is simply a bookmark button. the main conclusion for this is that i dont get any notification of the 'auto pull' and it still attempts to connect to HSDPA when opening one of these push pages
I stopped using it because it only updates the top page.
Where are the oush internet settings on rom official rom version 2.53?
Hello all,
Here's the problem. When I go to activate the wifi through comm manager, the button turns off, sometimes it hangs (clock showing) for 6 seconds, sometimes pressing over and over it will not turn. it will turn on for a .5 sec then go right off. At the times when it does turn on, the button below (GPRS or data..I think) will come on as well. There's a big "E" with the signal to the right, and then the little "e" on the top of the today screen will start bugging out with 2 small arrows on it I guess searching for a gprs connection..and a message saying the following:"connecting to media.net" or "connecting to att isp GPRS, connecting to ATT 3g" and "wap.cingular..cannot connect for unknown reason..yada yada yada" the popup messages drive me crazy I want to smash the phone to the floor. but no wifi.
My account has neither gprs or 3G and i'm sick and tired of it searching for it. I click the dismiss/hide button but it just comes right back on bombarding me with these popup messages over and over. Once in a while it will turn on but for a short time to the point it won't connect to the wifi spot, and over and over we go. Skyfire gives me "can't connect to server", and opera comes up, but by the time it does, the wifi button turn off. It's not even getting to the point of connecting to the coffee place. why is it looking for GPRS when all I want is free wifi? All I want to do is check my email once in a while. I live overseas by the way. I did do a clean restart many times but it doesn't fix the problem. I won't flash a new rom as I'm a bit worried so please to offer/recommend. The phone never fell to the floor so I don't think it's the issue. Anyway to configure it to stop searching for GPRS/3G? maybe I did something wrong in the kaiser tweak settings..?
This is an att phone ROM 1.57.502.2 ROM date 8/25/07 RADIO 1.27.12.11
PROTOCOL 22.45.88.07H
I've had the phone for about 2 years and the last 8 months or so it's given me the problems listed. I never took the time to deal with it, but I'm just fed up to the point I will never buy an HTC device again if I can't solve the problem.
any help appreciated..
BTW, on the right side of the phone the crack (between the screen and keyboard) is unusually large and has some play to it. Even though I hardly ever use the
keyboard/sliding mechanism.
Also, nice look to the forum. A much needed overhaul IMO.
Help please...
I have a similar issue, and I am blaming the age of the device for it's inability to connect to my wireless network at home. At work, it has no bother as the wireless gear is of a higher spec.
wow thats a lot of information in just 3 paragraphs! what i'm trying to say is that you've described the situation well but you haven't mentioned any steps you've taken to try to solve the problem.
first, if you don't pay for a data connection (3G, GPRS, etc), then you can disable the data connection using "modaco nodata". essentially, this will disable the data connection so that the phone never attempts to use it.
next, you need to clarify how long it has been since you last performed a "hard reset". if it has been ages since the last hard reset, back up all your data (messages, contacts, call history, photos, videos, music, etc, etc) and give that ***** a hard reset!
what the above will accomplish is TWO things:
1. it will reset the device and its software to "factory condition", hence the need to back up all your data and to be prepared to reinstall all your programs and settings and configurations.
2. more importantly, the hard reset will help rule out or confirm the possibility of a hardware failure.
lets talk more about number 2 above. if the problem is purely software related (windows has gone bad/corrupt, some registry settings are bad/corrupt, etc, etc), then hard resetting will fix it certainly. if the problem stems from a hardware issue, then the problem will persist after the hard reset.
thus, the hard reset step will direct you and the rest of us in a definite direction to try to solve the problem.
if you have already tried a hard reset, you should update your first post to reflect this fact. it is good practice to give as much information as possible if you need help troubleshooting an issue.
do let us know what happens and good luck!

I'll have to backup and dod a HR then i'll update any problems. Thanks for now
Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol

thanks in advance for the help and advice, now it's time to finish reading through the app thread and hit up the store...

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
I'm noticing a problem recently that I may have been having from day one but I now am aware of it.
When I move from one location to another, say from home to work, when I have got to work I no longer have a data connection. I have mobile signal but no mobile connectivity.
The only way to get it back seems to be to restart the phone. Turning the mobile data on and off does nothing. And I thought airplane mode did switch it back on a couple of times but not recently.
I am on 3 network in the UK. Has anybody else experienced this or have any idea what my problem might be?
Thanks

Something similar occurs to me. Haven't found a solution so far except reflash baseband.
I've had this happen to me couple of times and solution was to restart. Happens when you are on a wifi network and you move away from it. I am on O2 in UK.
There is a thread on the Sony support forum and the problem seems very common. Sony staff has asked a set of questions over there to ascertain the cause, and so I assume they are looking into it.
Might have to do with WiFi on location or external SD. I will try to do some research.
It seems to be a fairly common issue but no1 seems to have a solution.
I do not have wifi location based on.
It's a really annoying issue

From another poster on another forum - many report success:
I thought I’d share a quick tweak that applies to most of Sony’s Xperia Android phones. If you’re on the Three network and travel around a fair bit you’ll notice that occasionally you’ll lose the data connection and it won’t always come back until you reboot the phone. Very annoying.
This happens because Three still have some 2G roaming agreements in place for areas they don’t have coverage. That doesn’t include data roaming however and a lot of devices (including the iPhone still) have trouble with this.
The way to fix this is to set the ‘Network Mode’ to ‘4G/WCMA’. Annoyingly you can’t set this in the ‘Mobile Network Settings’ section, you’ll need to go into hidden service menu to get to the setting. From the dialler, type this:
*#*#SERVICE#*#*
'Service' is typed as you would on a T9 predictive text keyboard, so thats one key press per letter.
Once your into the service menu, choose ‘Network Mode’ and then within this menu choose ‘LTE_WCDMA’.
You’ll see the radio stack reboot (so you’ll lose your connection while it does this).
No longer shall you experience the annoying ‘data never comes back’ issue.
It goes without saying that changing this setting is at your own risk.

This works fine for me for over two months, except I can't make calls anymore, as calls go over GSM in the Netherlands., so I use 'LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)', but it will still loose data over time. More frustrating; if you enter flight mode, or reboot, radio resets to the standard setting 'LTE/GSM auto (PRL)'.
