My Alpine has suddenly decided to drain its battery very quickly, for no obvious reason. It just went from 100% to totally flat overnight, and this is with GPRS, wi-fi and Bluetooth all switched off. Usually I can keep it at home in this state for several days with only a small drop in battery power.
I doubt the battery is at the end of its life - it's only a few months old, and it suddenly developed this problem, having been fine up until now.
Any suggestions anyone please?
hmmm....no idea about that...anyway you can check at http://www.batteryupgrade.com/ for more powerfull battery if you like it...
Has it only done it the once so far? Mine did it a couple of weeks ago for no reason, charged it back up and it has been fine ever since. Might just be a one off!
Mine has done this twice in the last 2 weeks
Happened since installing the Modded 162 / 1.04 rom from here?
Are others having the porblem using this ROM? if so may be worth a ROM change

I've now done a hard reset and this seems to have solved it. I'll let you know if it happens again. I doubt it's the ROM version, as I have the latest official O2 released ROM.
I've found the culprit!
... well, I have half an explanation anyway. Last week, I updated my ROM from the official O2 site - to Ext ROM 1.11.169. I have now hard reset and reverted back to 1.11.162 (with Radio 1.04), reinstalled my software, and it's all working as normal.
I run Tom Tom Navigator 5 - don't know whether this had anything to do with it, but the power drain characteristics were similar to if I'd left Tom Tom running (except I know it was definitely closed down). I even hard reset and uninstalled Tom Tom and the problem was still there - until I did the ROM downgrade to .162 again.
Anyway - it's fixed - I hope this is useful if someone else gets this problem.
Andy.
Hi to all,
I, among some others am experiencing battery drain since upgrading to WM6 even though I am running under the same circumstances as before the upgrade with just a few less programs running etc. If anyone can shed any light on a fix for this or suggestions (turning off bluetooth has no great effect) then I would gladly like to hear them.
I know Malik is also experiencing the problem so I know I am not alone.
Thanks.
I am experiencing the exactly the same great battery usage rates between faria, super rom, and wm6. All overclocked at 260.

when u overlock a device it drains the battery much much faster then u expect so to help that don't overlock but if u overlock then the battery goes mad because overlocking takes great deal of amount out to make the device faster.

I overclocked to 264 (omap) / 286 (bs) MHz without issues. It seems the cpu drains the batt a lot only during "heavy" task execution, e.g. playing a game or watching a movie that is not adapted to qvga. Most of time it just sleeping, as before.
So, i flashed wm6 (pdaviet v.3) and have noticed the same or even less battery drain as before (when my wizard is left alone). You have to check all you're installed to fugure out "the swine"

i have it overclocked to 299 with batterystatus, and no battery drain... the OS isntalled is pdaviet v2 ...
If anything, I've found WM6 to be *better* on battery life than any of the previous WM5 AKUs.
AKU 3.3 would be the best in the WM5 range.
I've also found that the battery life on my device has dramatically increased. I don't have to charge it now for about an extra two days compared to before.
This has been an issue with me as well. I'm running the clean Crossbow ROM (aka Orwells1984 et.al.) Here are the programs I have been running:
2.19 radio rom
Resco Med. Suite 5.42
Pocket Weather
Sprite Backup
Smartskey
Omapclock @ 240mhz
CE Star
I had issues with the today plugin from Resco cutting down my battery life on the old iPAQ 6365. Haven't had ANY problems with previous AKU 3.x versions.
If you're using omapclockplus your device is at normal speeds during standby. I think its the crossbow radio that drains it. Switching between OSs might not change your rom, leaving the battery drain

maybe it really is the radio... i moved to 2.17 and since then no battery problems, but im not for sure its that, but possibly since i have same apps installed on fresh WM6 as before when i had battery probs.
Well, I finally did a hard reset and lo and behold the battery drain problem is gone. I had it off the charger for most of the day and kept the WiFi on a bit as well. The ROM on which I really noticed the problem was the Pdaviet3. I'm going to reinstall the Resco Today plugin and see if that does anything. I love this ROM. Clean and fast!
try disconnect "Error reporting". It's on by default.

Weird.. I did this last night too and it seems to have cured the problem...
Anyway I still have the automatic power up issue... Is there a solution other than locking the device? i.e. A registry edit to turn off push email?
I think the battery drain problem MAY have been solved by the hard reset as well.
Tomorrow will be my second day of use since hard reset so I will report my findings.
I remember (when I had Motorola MP220) advice for longer battery life: device should be 100% charged when flashing new ROM. If not, charge it 100% and do the hard reset.
BTW, I had battery drain with Pdaviet ROM v3, 'cose the smatskey was set for overclocking by default.
i own a xda mini s with crossbow (orwells ROM and Radio 1.19), i use direct push and don't have any battery problem.
Had the same problem: batter drained 2 or 3 times as fast as regularly.
Used:
- TomTom6
- SPB Weather
- PocketPC Wakeup
- Resco todayplugin
- Todaytime
Just did a hard reset and reinstalled TomTom & SPB weather.
Everything ran fine, til I installed PocketPC Wakeup.CAB...
So that one might be the problem....
Anyone else tested their software for batterydraining problems?
batterystatus might also be a problem.
I hard reset, did not install batterystatus but installed rest of my normal apps; this solved both my wakeup issues and battery drain issues.
P.S. simply uninstalling batterystatus did nothing, had to reset.
No batterystatus is not the cause because the first time when I had the issue was without batterystatus ever being installed. The problem hasn't really been back even though I now have it installed.
Is a lower lifetime characteristic of a WM6 ROM? Before flashing I used to be able to get ~two days life on WM2003, now I struggle to get 12 hours.
I do have the Soft GPRS tweak installed.
I've seen other posts relating to power off at around 30%, but this isn't a problem for me - I'm still getting life at 12%. It's just that I get to this low level so quickly, and have to charge each evening to have power in the morning. My battery is original, and otherwise the ROM (helmi_c's) is stable.
Any hints or comments?

mine is significantly shorter than when i was in WM5. but not as bad as yours. try this. go back to WM5 and see if it still gives u 2days.. then go back to wm6. then if u still get 12hours max with the same usage as you have with wm5.. then it's the ROM.
if you get poor batt life even going back to wm5, then maybe it's the battery. consider borrowing a battery, or buying a new one..
Are you sure your battery can stand only 12 hours ? it's too short. Try to reduce thre brightnes to save the power of your battery.
Ta for the suggestions.
I already have my screen brightness adjusted, and auto power off as appropriate.
Battery is the original, but behaved with 2003. I have two Himalyas (bought the second off a colleague for £40 as nervous about playing with ROMs!) and so two original batteries; both behave the same. I also inherited an aftermarket battery which is truly awful - goes haywire after down to ~45%.
I did try WM5 for a while, and don't recall the battery problem. As I have two devices, switching one to WM5 and comparing is a good suggestion. Unfortunately I need one application (NotifyLink - see thread in the WM5 forum) that I've not been able to get working in WM5, and *does* work on WM6, so if I need to go back it's WM2003SE for me :-(
Before trying to flash back to an older rom, consider some other battery saving options.
Lowering your screen brightness was a good idea, which you have already done.
Some other things to consider:
Turn off "Receive All Incoming Beams" until you actual need to receive something via bluetooth/IR.
Turn off bluetooth if you are not using it (this used to be a massive drain on my himalaya)
After closing a program, go to the task manager and make sure it is actually closed. THe cross in the top right hand corner usually just shrinks things. You can buy/download applications I believe that will actually properly close a program. I've on occasion had 8 progrms running at the same time simutaneously before closing them.
Make sure the terminals on your battery and himalaya are clean (where the battery connects) and also test to make sure your battery is seated correctly.
Change the timeout for your device (IE how long it will wait before turning its backlight off, and then turning off in full). Mine is set to 1 minute. You can set it as low as 30 seconds but I didn't like this as I felt it would wear out the backlight.
If I think of more I'll come back and write them. Perhaps someone has already made a "Save battery power" post. If not, perhaps someone will make one and the mods can sticky it.
cheers
The battery is geting life expired. Better buy a new battery..
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
If I've besmirched either of the ROMs published on this forum then please except my apologies - I discovered that my battery problems are NOT due to the ROM. But nor are they due to my battery!
Re-Flashing (or hard reset with reboot options) gives me good/normal battery usage. I therefore figured that my problems _must_ be due to an installed application. It didn't take me long to determine that this was due to NotifyLink, which I unfortunately need to install in order to receive my corporate email. With this present I lose approx. 6% battery power every hour(!), even with GPRS disconnected and the application not checking with its server. Just installing (even before configuring) the application I get this immense battery drain. Weird. Removing my SIM card doesn't help. Neither does uninstalling; I need to hard reset before battery consumption returns to being acceptable.
As I need this application it looks like I need to accept the need to top-up every evening.
(Medium term I know my company are moving away from this app, but will require DirectPush - anyone know if we can activate this in a Himalaya ROM?)
i recently replaced my battery for a new one. it was near 3 yrs old and it's battery life was steadily decreasing lately, shutting off just about 6 hours after a full charge! when i bought a new one it shuts of at 5% on the same rom and operating conditions, nice huh!?. so as a rule of hand slash of around 15-25% of battery life for every year of use. better yet save up for a new one while your on it .

Good job. As you can see on notifylink's newsletter they're very specific on devices fit for the job, for example not just any Wing, but TMobile Wing...

As far as I know all you need for direct push is correct settings of exchange server and a device with WM5 or WM6 with built in MSFP or WM2003 with Global Contact Access installed. MSFP should probably be in your WM6 ROM unless your cook cut it out. In that case you can either try to find it in the ROM kitches of recent HTC devices and see what happens if you cook it into Hima ROM yourself. I don't know which file(s) you should use. Or you can download GCA and see if it works on your WM6 Hima.
Maggy - Many thanks for the response. Yes NotifyLink do recommend specific devices, but I've no idea if their battery consumption is any better. I do see from various postings here in my company that I'm not alone with problems - generally advice is to just check with the server less frequently, etc, which doesn't solve my issue. I'm going to have to live with this inefficiency for the moment.
As regards DP, I'll await with interest my company's progress in moving to this technology. Thanks for your information!
I have similar problem since WM6 Tofclock ROM is installed - getting just about 24hours battery life....Although the battery is quite old the Rom has definetly some incidence on this --- I have installed batti 2.1 following some threads i found here, hope it will help
Actually, I found out the same strange thing, while I was trying to solve another problem. I changed almost all of the OS/Radio Roms combinations, and with WM2003 the battery time when the phone is in stand-by is significally greater than with the WM2005 or 2006 Rom (days vs hours)... and this happens with every radio rom.
I recently upgraded my wizard from a wm6 rom to another and started to notice the battery indicator dropping much faster if I'm on EDGE networks (but maybe also with GPRS, I'm not sure). Since I didn't flash to the official rom before, I thought I had the common battery drain, so I did this: full backup using spb backup, remove hardspl, flash to original qtek rom, hard reset, flash updated radio rom, softspl, flash to wm6 rom, hard reset, restore previous full backup.
The problem is that I'm still noticing the battery going down faster than before. I'm not sure about it, because with this new rom I have a more reliable way to measure the battery, but before flashing all over again and reinstalling every single program (lots of time) I wanted to ask if my method of flashing does solve the battery drain problem (and therefore this is normal for this rom) or if this method does not solve the problem and I have to do everything without the full backup.
- check if processor speed is always high. Latest BatteryStatus allows variable speeds according to the needs of the OS - calls it CPU scaler;
- check if bluetooth or infra-red are turned ON as they drain some energy;
- check the backlight. Mine is always at the minimum and works fine in almost all occasions (except under bright sun light)
- disable Today timeout
- check power drain with a new battery (if you can get one)
that's all i can think of. maybe others can think of other reasons.
good luck
maybe I didn't explain all... I know what can cause greater battery usage, and I try to avoid it, but comparing the previous rom with the new one it seems the new one uses more battery. I also know this can be a "feature" of the new rom and I don't mind about it, because it's really much better. What I want to make sure is that the battery drain is not caused by improper flashing, because that's just wasting battery for nothing.
ah, right.
I don't think there's such a thing as 'improper flashing' when the new ROM works ok. Except for not performing a hard-reset afterwards i guess nothing can cause that kind of power draining, although some have mentioned corrupted extended-rom but i can't vouch for that
Currently I DO think there is something like 'improper flashing'.
I've read about it in another topic as well.
Since I upgraded to WM5SE rev4 I suffer from a severe battery drain.
For some time I suspected my dual sim adapter (did change to that one about the same time as upgrade), but even without adapter the drains stays wel above 100ma!
Until now i have eliminated all other possibilities.
The best way to upgrade to any custom rom appears to be:
- Flash to an official ROM
- Flash the custom ROM.
I seems to have something to do with the ExtROM that sometimes get 'a bit' corupted causing tha battery drain. Flashing an official ROM makes sure youre device is all fresh before getting the custom things on.
ok, but I already did that. The problem is that I'm still seeing some battery drain, especially if I'm on an EDGE network. I just wanted to know if restoring from a full backup using spbbackup after flashing properly could be the reason or if I must find another cause.
Sometimes can be a Today plugin that is performing some task all the time and that might cause battery drain.
there used to be old topics on that matter so i guess you must dig and raise some dust to get it clear
now that you mention it... there is a new plugin in this rom, I'll disable and test. But I still find strange that when I'm on gprs the battery drain is almost inexistent, but on edge is really big

Did you solve your problem?
I can't!
I have experience some issues
When I started trying PDA VIET Roms i feel like I got a new device cause it has superior speed but its caused by An app called OmapClock PLUS that enables an overclock, thats why the speed but it has too many batt drain... so i leave the PDA Viet Roms... I always first downgrade to an original ROM Wm5 then upgrade to a Custom and then hardreset... of course sometimes with a batt at 55% (enough to flash) but Mr SVI on his first release BrightRom has too much Batt monitor... it causes too a batt drain cause the reload constantly by itself to show batt drain... disable all. and no more problems jeje even on his Hornet v1.1 it has drain for me.
Somebody tolds me that I need to reflash my device with a batt at 100% but i didn't prof that solution so if you like to check that. tell us how is it going.
Hope it was usefull.
Hi all,
I have installed the WM6.1 ROM 6.1.2a16CS by C. Shekhar on my qtek2020.
It is very cool and gave a second life to my qtek. I am just a bit surprised by the duration of the main battery. It is running out of bat very fast.
As I haven't used my qtek for month before installing the new ROM, I can't tell if it's a battery problem or because this new ROM is consuming more resources. Have you noticed such behavior on your machines?
For further info I am not using my qtek as cell phone. I am thinking about using it back as a phone, but I have first to fix this battery aspect.
Moreover I have read s/t about a battery fix, that I haven't installed yet. Can s/o tell me more about this fix and what it is doing?
Anyway this ROM is a great one.
Thx for your answers
Marc
I dont know about the battery fix but i have never installed any sort of fix like that either for wm5 or wm6.x. Are you sure there isnt some background process that keeps on continuously running? It could be a battery problem if the battery had discharged alot during the non-operational period. I changed by himas battery about 7-8months back because the last battery had gotten abit too old and was discharging very quickly.
i think you are talking about SD card fix..its a registery fix that makes the battery consumption by SD-card low
well, WM5 and WM6.x IMHO are battery consuming ROMs, i can attest to this,
experiment no. 1:
same xda, same battery (1200mAH original battery)
-with WM2003SE at normal use, XDA turns off approx after 36 hrs of use including standby.
-with WM5 and WM6.x, XDA turns off WM5-18hrs, WM6.x-25hrs of use including standby.
experiment no. 2:
two xda, different OS, both with brand new 3600mAH extended life battery.
in 1 day (at heavy texting use from 7am to 7pm):
WM2003SE XDA2 - battery from 100% to 58%
WM6.X XDA2 - battery from 100% to 35%
possible explanation:
WM6.x (WM5) uses more CPU time and Memory resources, plus it probably uses more power in maintaining the persistent storage, hard and soft reset persistent memory.

Ather, is this fix already in all/most recent releases? If not, can you give us a link? Never heard of it.
I have no battery problems, quite the contrary. My battery life is amazing me. To be honest I tweaked a lot when I started using WM6.x, too much to remember, too much to tell you.
but some parts:
I don't need 24/7 phone connection, Phone Alarm takes care of this for me
Use a bare minimum of today plug-ins
Avoid animations
Close programs except when you seriously do need them in the background
