Change HTC Splash Screen on 2.16.9.1 WWE - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Dear folks, I am glad to share with you that I just managed to change the HTC splash screen to my baby girl's icon successfully. Sorry, I won't to share with you about her picture, but I can share with you my working procedure and the necessary BMP converters.
Before we go, please make a full SD backup with "r2sd all", and save it to secure place, I will not held any responsibility for any damages caused by following my steps, so please take your own risks.
To start, please read my another thread first, ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44518 ), which will give you some basic information about we will do.
In the step 1.6 of that thread, we will get a 800c0800-splash.nb, which is 256KB. 0 - 0x2FBFF is for OEM splash screen, 0x2FC00-0x2FFFF is unknow for me(please leave it untouched), and 0x30000 - 0x3FFFF contains HTC Splash Screen.
The HTC splash screen is a 240W x320H 24b bitmap, and it is compressed by lz algorithm of bcl.sourceforge.net with a little modification, that's why its header starts with "BCL1" string.
To see the real bitmap of HTC screen, just HEX copy 0x30000-0x3FFFF to a standalone file, then convert it with my bcl.exe, it is attached below.
bcl d htc-splash.nb htc-splash.bmp.
The lz algorithm is very bad. If your own bitmap is too beautiful/complicated, the compressed content length will exceeds the 64K limit easily. In that case, you can't fit all your bitmap in.
To encode your own bitmap, type:
bcl c lz own-splash.bmp own-splash.nb
The encoded own-splash.nb will be auto filled up to 64K with 0 if it is < 64K.
Then HEX copy own-splash.nb to 0x30000 -0x3FFFF of 800c0800-splash.nb, then follow my other steps after 1.6 in that thread to flash it into your Wizard. Actually, the OEM Splash screen and HTC Logo screen update could be done at the same time, you do not need to do it twice.
BTW: the BCL.exe was compiled in VS.2005, someone may have problems to run it if you don't have MSVC 8.0 runtimes.
Enjoy and have fun,
And thanks, HTC, you give me two chances to see my favorate pictures. Next time, please let us play a 24 page slides show, since the boot up is so slow.

Is it a kind of registry tweaks? I remember I did it before in my SPV E200, but never try it on Wizard.

I hate to be a noob with this, but I don't know HEX editing very well. If someone does and has the free time, can you write a quick tutorial for us non-CS DIY'ers? Thanks.

If i get any free time this week I will, but it dosent look good =(
I also want to write one for the main splash screen (QTEK on the 2.17 ROM)

I seem to vaguely recall that there was some ROM by a cellular provider - I don't recall which - where you actually had a progressbar going once it got to the Windows Mobile screen. It'd actually be good to see that thing on the devices by default

Not quite, the newest aWizard doesn't change the splash image. It has a write error.

HEX copy means copy the data contents in binary mode using some binary editors like WinHEX or Ultraedit, it ensure you can copy&paste the exact number of file bytes clearly. Usuallly, with a text editor, you have no idea about how long of text you have selected for copying.
Sorry I can't help you more. I prefer coding than writing articles, whatever English or Chinese, lt makes me look like a stupid.

Need help changing bootscreen please.

First of all I am a newbie to flashing roms/unlocking/etc. I have an HTC TyTN II phone and have been reading for hours on how to change the bootscreen. (1st screen that pops up after powering the phone on) I kind of get an idea of how to do so but I guess I'm having compatibility issues or something with my computer running Vista 64 bit. Anyhow, I was able to flash my phone to one of the L26 diamond series roms and reflashed it with a different rom. My problem is that the bootscreen still shows the guy with a blue eye and says "L26 Diamond Series" on the bottom lower left corner. I want to change this back to the original "smart mobility" screen that the phone first came with or perhaps change it to some other HTC smart mobility screen. (I really love how the OEM original screens look) I hate the bootscreen on my phone right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even better if you are located in the Southern California area and can help me in person. I'm willing to drive to you and perhaps even pay you. Please show me how it is done. I am a fast learner. Just a little overwhelmed right now that's all.
Appreciate your time.
Thanks in advance!
lol you can flash your rom but can't do the exact same thing for the splash screen.
funny
try doing a search "change bootscreen". You'd be surprised on what you find....
first of all to help you out that "boot screen" is called a splash screen if you say boot people will get confused thinking you mean the boot loader
second of all there are two ways to do it...
you can flash a new splash screen using a custom bootloader
or if it isn't cooked into your rom.....
you can change it through registry setting (just use schapps advanced configurator)
there are actually two different types of splash screens also... the one that is first that replaces your carier.
after that sometimes there is an animation ( you can use advanced configurator to enable disable and choose the animation)
and then the win mo splash screen.....
all of them are replaceable just search around for specifics on how to change them is not to hard
Figured it out!
I went ahead and used my friend's computer which is running Win XP and figured it out. It's a piece of cake now. Thanks for your help guys.

I have used Adv-Config3 to change the splash screen so not to have AT&T logo staring at me, but 'No Joy'. I assume it has to be a .gif? Or will other file types work?

It's actually really annoying that both screens while boothing are referred to as the splash screen. The splash screen that is referred to in Advanced config would more appropriately be called the welcome screen. To get rid of the very first screen which is also referred to as the splash screen you must flash a different one. If you search "custom splash screens" it will take you to a thread with a lot of different ones you can download. It's also pretty easy to create your own custom ones should you desire to do that as well.
I think the issue you're running into is that the one you're changing in advanced configu is supposed to be a .png file. Animated GIF's can be used, but think they're supposed to be named something different. I'll have to check and update my post.

The initial (Boot) screen when you first power on your phone has to be flashed like a ROM. Then, if you have a GIF file named animated.gif* in the \Windows directory, that image will display before moving on to the Welcome screen. The Welcome Screen is a PNG image named welcomehead69.png (or welcomehead.69.png) also found in the \Windows directory.
* AT&T-based ROMs change the registry key defining the name of the animated GIF, so you will need to edit that key after placing the GIF file in \Windows.
Hope this clears everything up.
To replace the L26 Page you need to follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334907

That's right, i was thinking it was called animated.gif, but that seemed to obvious i guess, thanks for the info man. I actually have the animated boot screen disabled in my defautl settings xml that runs during my UC so i never really looked into changing it. I should definitely make a custom welcomehead file though and put it in my UC to copy over for my truely presonalize feel lol. I always end up switching my own favorite radios with teh ones cooked in on almost every rom i've downloaded. I really like the 1.59.42.15 radio, but no chef's bundle it...fortunately some wonderful minds around here made it easy for people to put whatever radio they want in a rom

If it didn't change you'll have to flash it using a custom RUU because it is cooked in, you can learn how to do that here

please tell me what you think
Hello,
do you have any screenshot of the boot or video?
Just extract the gif files and open them in IE or firefox. They'll play the anim. Very funny
thats quite funny

You are completely cool!
Thank you for this Bootscreens.
Now, Hero Booting isn't pain anymore!
glad you liked it. stay tuned for next version, already working on a progress bar... won't be out before weekend i guess.
still looking for a fingerprint scanner animation.

for now i found a way to edit the files in inkscape, one layer per frame, exporting them to .xcf keeping the layers, and then use gimp to convert to animated gif. works, but is a lot of footwork... but i guess as i am trying to make a rather "complex" (at least for a gif) animation it just is a lot of footwork...

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me out. I dig your boot animation, and it's inspired me to make my own (OK, I'm just stealing the old "Cylon Eye" animation from the pre-release days.) Anyway, I've got the animation zip installed and working, however it seems like the phone is ignoring the frame delay. The animation seems to be going as fast as the phone can handle. So maybe there's a setting on the animated GIF that I'm not applying. Are there any specific settings you applied to your gifs?
Here's what I've got right now:
Code:
Interlace: No
GIF Comment: No
Loop Forever: Yes
Delay between frames where unspecified: 10ms
Frame disposal where unspecified: "I don't care" (other options are Combine and Replace)
Use Delay entered for all frames: Yes
Use Disposal entered for all frames: Yes
These settings are in GIMP. If you could help me figure this out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

set that value to a higher number, try 100ms. this specifies the general frame delay, you can set per-frame delays in the name of the frame. for example:
"Frame#1" is the layer name, make it
"Frame#1(500ms)" to make the delay half a second long.
(if that doesn't work try to google it, i am not 100% sure about the syntax)
would you mind sharing that animation you are talking about?
btw: work is still ongoing here, nuclear power now has a colored progress bar, but it is getting complicated handling 150+ layers in inkscape...

Yeah, I realized that my math was off with the delay, after noticing yours was 500ms. I'm going to try a couple other things to get it smoother as well. The stock boot animation has a small animated gif in the middle of the screen with a black background, so I imagine the phone can handle that easier than a full 480x320 animation, so that's my next step. I was actually just about to post my animation in a separate thread, so I'll link that post here when I've done that.
EDIT: My initial attempt is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583094
There's still work to be done, so don't judge me to hard!

[BOOTSCREEN REQUEST] - Stargate "Puddle" Effect

What I would like to see for a bootscreen on the Hero is an animation of a Stargate locking in the seventh chevron then the splash coming out to encompass the entire screen. As it recedes back to the gate it leaves the word "ANDROID" in the event horizon overlaying the puddle effect then have four little green android characters with P-90s run through the gate before the animation ends.
Any takers on creating this? I don't know enough about creating video and effects to even get started on something like this.
Dude u read my mind...that would be awesome.. massive stargate fan here..lol
Intresting..... i will follow this thread
I'd be willing to toss out $20 (maybe more if it's a really high quality job) if there are any experienced graphics designers out there who could make this happen.
if anyone knows how to do it it is tristan202...
Does this help????
Woops,... 2 mins,... Cant use .rar,.... try again,....
OK,... here goes again.
I was previously advised (by Tristan202 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645244) that the Hero 1st plays one gif just once, then loops another... So.. Each ZIP file contains 2 gifs,... one of the "puddle" in action,... one of just the outro,...
All are 320x180 resolution,...
Latency setting on BEST was set to 50ms...
Latency setting on MED was set to 75ms...
Latency setting on LOW was set to 100ms...
Now need to find an simple method to apply them. I'll leave it to you guys to do the research for me aswel. Get cracking and let me know,....
Peace
Shizzle,..... I've just re-read the 1st post,.... And realised what I've supplied isn't quite what you wanted!!!!!

[KITCHEN][MARCH 25 '10] HTC Android Basic Kitchen, v0.25 - for Beginners! [PC / MAC]
I haven't given it a try myself yet though.
I had a go at this and I'll show you how far I got (see attached update.zip for flashing through recovery rom).
I'm new to making bootscreens, but I studied a few I downloaded and learned how to sign an update zip. (Can't seem to generate my own pem/pk8 key files, when trying to apply the zip signed with my key it keeps saying that the files are unsigned, but the testkey files included with the signapk zip I grabbed work fine to sign). Also I didn't use zipalign, haven't worked out how yet, or is that only done on APK files?
Anyway, I noticed when I used GIF files that use pixel cropping (leaving out unchanged pixels in subsequent frames) the image gets all distorted, like a TV broadcast signal problem. So the resulting GIF files are larger than the originals, as each frame is a full frame.
However there is still a problem with some frames in the first GIF, still some distortions, although nowhere near as bad as on my first try with cropped frames... Also I don't really like the way the 2nd GIF loops as you can clearly see when it jumps from last frame, to first frame...

I am planning on trying to teach myself and make some more tonight using Photoshop instead of the automated software I used last time,.... But what Id like to know is,... As it is,... Does it play landscape, stretched across the whole screen?.... If it does then the issue is just the resolution (as I sized it to play in in the middle of the screen in portrait mode) and in theory should be easy enough to resolve (once I know how to use Photoshop that is).... Let me know please.
Thanks.
No, it shows portrait, vertically centered (so 150px high black bars above and below the animation). You wouldn't hold your phone sideways while booting, so it seemed awkward to rotate the files 90degrees.
Basically the only problem is the "glitching" in the first GIF. I'll have another go at that one later. I think it's to do with palette compression.
Also, I used your 'BEST' zip, so I'll see about quality/size difference with the other ones.

When you say "glitching",... do you mean it doesn't play smooth yeah,... a bit jerky?
If that is what you mean then yeah, the other ones might play smoother. This might be because there are so many frames in the BEST one. The lower quality ones have less frames so can be processed faster.
Even if I just open them on my lappy in internet explorer, the best quality one doesn't play as nice as the lower one.
So the update.zip that you create,... Does that just put the files in the right place and tell the phone what files to open up when booting? Or do you have to add the black bars, tell it to play landscape or portrait, make it play only once/not loop etc,....
That's something I'd like to be able to do too.

No, I mean it glitches like a bad tv signal. I don't really know how to describe it. You can however safely flash the update.zip I posted to see what I mean. You can always flash back a stock bootscreen (with or without sound); I've attached them to this post (grabbed these off of xda myself a while ago).

Just unzip my zip file and peruse the files. That will tell you a great deal. You can delete the following three files, as they are created by the signing process:
META-INF\CERT.RSA
META-INF\CERT.SF
META-INF\MANIFEST.MF
This file contains the command to copy the files to the SYSTEM: volume on your device:
META-INF\com\google\android\update-script
And this file tells Android how and which files to display:
system\media\bootscreen\boot_animation.xml
There's 3 bootconfigs in that file, but the top and bottom one are commented out (could've deleted them, but oh well). So the middle bootconfig is the one to play around with. The ScreenX and ScreenY values are offsets from top left corner of screen in portrait mode. And useAudio tells android to play or not play the mp3 file (none included in my zip).
EDIT: The black "bars" are there, because as specified in the xml, it uses a GIF file that's 320x480, fully black, and the other 2 gifs are smaller, displayed on top of that black background.
If you wanted to have this animation play in landscape mode, you just need to physically rotate the GIF files 90 degrees right (or left) and resize the animation to make it fit the screen. If you make it 480px wide, then it would be 270px high, so that'd leave 320-270=50px of blackness. Vertically centering the animation would mean a ScreenX value of 25 and a ScreenY value of 0. Or leave both at zero to have the animation stay at the top of the screen in landscape mode. That way you have one black bar, at the bottom, 50px high. Make sense I hope?
One more thing: the update-script and xml file need to be saved in UNIX ASCII format. Use a text editor like UltraEdit (shareware) or Notepad++ (opensource freeware) if you're on Windows.

Just another standard WM SMS Thread improvement. (with simple tutorial)

This is just another SMS threading improvement.
I use color background thru .css code instead of graphics which mostly have already done.
As a result, loading is much much much faster.
Just copy the files to windows folder after back-up of same files. Tested on xperia x2 6.5.x. If you wan to change the colors at your preferrence, a simple tutorial is attached.
I am not a programmer. I just googled some syntax on html and css files.
I got most of the codes in this thread. Thanks for all the coders there.

I noticed it doesn't show the dates/ties of messages in the threads - if it could do this it would be great.

wildcardspv.

Yup,
Here you go:
This is on Toshiba TG01.
I see.....its because the .css files are for 6.5.x. It seems you are still using 6.5. I hope you still have your original files if in case you want to revert back to original style. In 6.5.x, the header even stays steadily with small time and date stamp and with contact pix. Its really nice looking.
aha!!
if I post the css file from 6.5 would you have a go at converting it then please? I'm happy to test it...
Sure, why not. But i cant promise i can do it. Just please try to post the original 2 css files and 1 htm that came from your 6.5 os. Thanks.
Great job~!!!
But I cant connect the contact people's pic and num...

+1! 6.5 is much stable!
I am really sorry, as i dont have 6.5 on my device. But i have updated the 1st post, so you may look into your device's htm & css files and you can start playing wiht the codes. Its definitely worth trying. Thanks.
I combine ur creation on this thread and other thread and get rid of "&" sign and this is what I got. it only happens when only sender is written.
Could u please help me fix it?
great work maherladsak..
so long to wait for new development..
just wait for more skin..
PROBLEM:
After copying files from here to my Windows folder, my threaded message viewing is gone. The SMS just doesn't open from the list. I have restored the original files back in the Windows folder after stopping tmail.exe but no use.
Please help. I'm desparate.
I rewrote thread_sms.htm so that it shows only the contact name without the '&' and I also took out the contact picture, in case someone who doesnt use contact pics like me wanted to take it out.

Hello, friends!
I have a nearly useless app here. I'm trying to submit it to the marketplace and those Microsoft people don't seem to have nay problem with the uselessness! However, I had accidentally used a Windows logo in the splashscreen art of the app. Obviously, they were not comfortable with it and asked me to remove it. So, without bothering to go to source again, I simply replaced the jpeg file inside XAP keeping the name of the XAP same. But even after correcting the file, they tell me that there's still Windows logo and the application is rejected.
The XAP is here: Link has been removed
Finally, the app is here:
Is there any chance that I might have left some traces of the logo somewhere? Or is it possible that the same old XAP file was tested again due to names of the new and the old being same? Thanks to community for the support! Feel free to comment on the app and the logo thing. Suggestions are always welcome.

Nice start. I think there is a problem though. Once you click "More" to read the entire article, is there no way to go back? Maybe I am missing something.
A couple of suggestions too.
1) Dark theme for AMOLED users.
2) Options to add sites for feeds.
Thanks.
Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. They're around on my to-do list, especially the theme one.
About navigation: I guess, the operating system makes use of the IE itself (of the engine behind IE, to be precise) to show pages even inside app. So, back button works the same way it does with IE - taking you one page back. So, the button's action depends upon the page being loaded. Simple solution to the problem you mentioned is to double press the back button - it works, I've checked. It takes back you to the list of news items. (It doesn't take you to the page where you clicked 'more', because I think its pointless to go to the short form of the article again after reading the whole article. Let me know if you think otherwise.)
Now, to address my issue, did you find any objectionable content (Windows logo or something copyrighted) which those people are complaining about?
Couldn't find anything except for the pocketnow logo on the splash screen that could have been mistaken as the Windows logo. I know it sounds silly, but who knows.

That's what I thought at first - the pocketnow logo. First thing, if pocketnow are using it, then should I. Secondly, it differs from the Windows logo significantly. Thirdly, they mentioned that the logo appears on the left cornet of the screen. And lastly, as you mentioned, pocketnow thing is stupid!
There was red Windows Mango logo used in the splash, which is now replaced with a red tile with the words 'blog windows phone'. I think that the confusion arose because I didn't change the name of XAP and the old one was tested again! Hope to get that approved. Wish me luck. I'll report the deep link here once its done.

That could be the reason. I hope it gets approved this time around. Please include the feature to add more sites, if possible.
All the best
