Sorry if this annoys anyone - I've spent the last 7 hours trying to find out the best method. I want to do two things:
A) BACKUP my USA T-Mobile MDA to SD, so I can restore it later
B) Upgrade to the T-Mobile USA 2.17 ROM (Custom)
After reading all the posts, let me see if this is correct:
STEP ONE: UNLOCK:
- First of all, I'm going to UNLOCK the device using lockiwiz
- (Do I need to do this twice? Once for the SIM and once for the CID?)
- After device is unlocked, I'm going to back it up.
STEP TWO: BACKUP:
- I've got an extra 128MB MiniSD card, which I'm using just for this purpose:
- I'm going to use TeraTermPro to backup to the SD card.
- I'm going to use the following command: r2sd all
- (This will backup EVERYTHING to the MiniSD, right?)
STEP THREE: UPGRADE:
- To Upgrade, I'm going to just run the CUSTOM_RUU_Prodigy_217....exe file, right?
- That's it, okay?
AFTER THE UPGRADE (OR BEFORE?):
- Should I uninstall ActiveSync?
- Presumably I should, as I will have a clean wiped device, and I'll want to start a new partnership?
- Should I uninstall ActiveSync before or after I upgrade to the new ROM?
Thank you all. This is a great forum. I'm also going to post this in the T-Mobile USA 2.17 ROM (Custom) section as well.
I know some of you may condemn me as being lazy, but I to have been looking for step by step directions to doing this upgrade. Would someone knowledgable be willing to take the time to compile such a post for us beginners?
The upgrading part of your post is exactly like i did it. I'm sorry that i can't comment on the backup because i have no experience with it. I did not reinstall activesynch when i upgraded, but if you wanted to reinstall it, i would image you flash first, reinstall active synch, then synch it with the device. I was using a USA T-MOBILE MDA.

I second that. I have absolutely no clue how to do a rom upgrade, as I am a complete NEWB when it comes to smartphones/pda's. I "for the dummy's" step-by-step would be great, and maybe make it a sticky or something so its there for everyone

Hello All,
Yes I am a newby here and I have tried to search for my answers so please do not flame me too bad.. I have an 8125 on Cingular service that has the origional ROM and I would like to upgrade it. I have reviewed the post and they are really hard to follow as they split off to multiple threads and almost always assume that you know the correct steps to follow.
Has anyone posted a "how to" for those of us that are new here? If not would someone like to talk me through it?
Thanks so much for your help

I am looking for the same thing.
Any one know of any how-to's?
It's very simple.
Connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable
CID unlock the phone
SIM unlock the phone
Double-click the upgrade ROM on your PC - it automatically installs
Restore your settings to your phone
You only need to unlock the CID and SIM once. There's a program called lokiwiz which you can download from this board. It runs in text mode, but it's very simple... just be sure to un-zip it to the root of your C:\ drive (it must be C:\Lokiwiz, don't put it in your Program Files folder).
You run Lokiwiz twice, once to SIM unlock and again to CID unlock. There are several threads here about how to run this software; the only "gotcha" is that it only works on the older software (which your phone has now).
After your install the new ROM, your phone is "factory clean." All of your phone numbers and settings are gone, so you have to restore them.
To restore your settings:
Run ActiveSync to restore your contacts and appointments
Go into the e-mail app to re-configure your e-mail settings
Re-install any add-on software you were using
I literally just got my 8125 a week ago, I haven't had time to do much with it yet either. I have downloaded just about every file I think I will need, and I already have a bluetooth headset, and bluetooth GPS mouse
Personally I think we should all back-up our phones right now before doing anything else, hah.
I'm currently searching on how to do this, I have downloaded Wiz backup.
Also I just want to add I currently havewhen booting up phone)
IPL 1.08
SPL 1.08
Radio 01.09.11
OS 1.8.11.1
Looking under device information:
ROM ver./Date : 1.8.11.1 WWE / 11/24/05
Protocol version: 4.0.13.20
Extended Rom version: 1.8.11.103
So I'm also researching "from where my device is starting" what is the best ROM or software upgrade to perform, and unlock tool to use.
Any information is much appreciated, good luck to us beginners, and thanks for any more experience on advice taking proper precautions backing up, in a way that will definately restore original software and settings.
I really don't need a $400.00 brick!

you do not need to SIM unlock phone to do a rom update ..
just CID unlock

Here is how I started at this site
Start with http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ the wiki pages are a great source for the basics on unlocking, acronyms, general information and questions. It made reading and understanding the threads much easier. I may be a geek but I’m no programmer. I’ve flashed my phone half dozen times & yes I have screwed it up a couple times by not following the instructions, but never “bricked” my phone.
My philosophy has always been RTFM (Read the F___ Manual)…. Well since the Cingular manual and inside scoop on how these HTC phones operate & program was non existent, welcome to the biggest online manual available! It may not be the best organized and simplest to follow, but man there’s a lot of good information here.
Good luck & welcome to the board!!

Thank you lotech for that post...looks like good advice.
Removed pending posting of instructions.
What is this for?
Thanx.

Sorry, not meant as a slam, but someone with only 21 posts, puts up a Rapidshare link for something to flash to a Wizard saying its HardSPL and no other instructions or information... Sorry (again, no offense meant by this) but I wouldn't flash something that is unexplained (if there is another post about this, then at least give a pointer to that in the first post).
FWIW: HardSPL is a way of making your device almost unbrickable. If it works like with the Hermes and Kaiser HardSPL, then you do the steps needed to install this, instead of the old CID unlock procedure of having to go back to the Button ROM and running lokiwiz.
But still, I'd be careful flashing something like this until more is known about it (the source, instructions for the method to install it, etc).
Totally agreed! I wouldn't go for it!
I don't mind to brick my wizard again!
mfrazzz
I with you agree, but...
I shall be immodest - please read ALL my messages ;-)
Instructions are not present because I do not wish to be responsible for another's nonsense. To whom it is necessary that will understand.

Lokiwiz has been a trusted and faithful friend. Until I get more info, instructions, screeners even...I will keep using my trusted friend Loki.
No offense to the OP, but "read my other posts" doesn't tell us much. Your other posts are just like this one. Short and to the point, no real info given...nothing telling me how to install/run it. Nothing troubleshooting if an issue should arise. Read the Loki thread, or Dr. P's tutorial...everything anyone needs to know about Loki is there. Yours...not so much.
Hey, all I need is a "no-answer" answer from the poster and that's enough for me to hold back.

Very true!!
IF, you check his entries, other posts like this one have been made in other device sections. Now how all the mighty guru's here have somehow overlooked this ability, and he has manged to make it happen...
When a dev here releases something, it is does with so much info that if something does happen, a person KNOWS it can be fixed. To say:

Tells me this person really gives a sh*t less about whether or not my usage helps or kills my device. Real nice attitude there...makes me really confident about using the linky.
And to the poster above...you feel so confident about it that you tried it on a friends wizard??? If it does work, as you say, please give us more details about it...since we have none really.
Until we see some directions as well as a bit more transparency from the OP, I'm removing the link. OP, please PM me when you have fulfilled those requirements.

Guys dont bombard like this , Prislav has always presented raw content like this in Prophet forum also. Maintaining the terminology, just see diagram, might be useful- simple
But im not favouring any one. please!
I force nobody. Do not want, it is not necessary. To me it is not important.
Well this thread seems nice and hostile .
Unless I am missing something all Prislav has done is to use JumpSPL by Pof (Nice WinCE Tramp by the way ) to fire off a patched G3 SoftSPL and from there let you launch into the ROM update routine.
Prislav’s post may have been a little short on details but there is plenty of info on the board and in his previous threads on the subject. Pof's JumpSPL thread is also a goldmine of info.
Prislav also seems to have been kind enough to provide a patched 'flashable' SPL for G3 devices.
I have not tried this yet (my G3 junkers are at home, so I will tonight) but looking at the dumps of the files and the steps that Prislav has gone through I think this should work.
The SoftSPL seems to contain nothing dangerous and I test launched it on a G4 I have on my desk to no adverse affect (in fact it did almost what I expected, not sure it is putting the device into the correct 'wait for USB' state mind you but it does answer to prods from MTTY ).
Looking at the way the file is patched (and my limited knowledge in this area may let me down, I am more of an ARM Linux hacker) is very interesting. It also looks very much like this could be wrapped into a SoftSPL flashtool that just soft patches a G3 before flashing (and also gives users a choice to flash a HardSPL if wanted, just like we do with G4’s and most modern HTC devices).
Ok,
Just an update to my last post,
I found an old G3 with a broken keyboard under my desk. IPL/SPL 2.17, ancient radio and AKU2.
SoftSPL via JumpSPL from Pof/Prislav seems to work fine .
Converted the Hard-SPL.nb to an nk.nbf (with just the SPL in it).
Flashed the resulting nk.nbf.
Device is now running a patched SPL (2.H4).
Just upgraded device to WM6 from an off the shelf ROM (had Jag 4.0 handy) using the usual NVID update tool.
The end result is an old, unhacked WM5 G3 upgraded to WM6 in a matter of mins.
Download: I will edit this post when I get home and have had a chance to upload the files to my site. - Stuck at work right now.
Edit @ 22:00, 17th Jan: Download is now up here. Use with care and don't come crying to me (or Prislav ).
HowTo: Install PatchedSPL on a G3 Wizard (or just run a SoftSPL if you flash another OS ROM at step 7 with the included flash tool).
Warning: I have only tried this with 2.* IPL’s/SPL’s, I can’t be sure it will not brick devices running 3.* or 1.* IPL’s/SPL’s. It will be a few days before I can test this so if you have a 3.* or 1.* bootloader I would suggest you leave this well alone. Do not try this on a G4, there is no point and you may well brick it .
1: Install latest ActiveSync (If you’re upgrading from WM5-6 your going to need it)
2: Download the rar from my website.
3: Copy the contents of the “Copy to root of G3 Wizard device” folder to the ROOT of your Wizard using ActiveSync.
4: From File Explorer run the SPL shortcut from the root of the device.
5: Wait for the screen to go white (you are now running a patched SoftSPL running from RAM),
6: Unplug and reconnect the USB lead to the PC (you can check the connection with MTTY if your so inclined).
7: Wait a few seconds and start the ROM upgrade in “Flash-WizG3-PatchedSPL”.
If all goes well this will work just like a normal ROM update (without anything shown on your Wizard’s screen) and your device will reboot after a few mins.
Check the version of the SPL running, if it is SPL version 2.H4 all should be fine and your now running a CID unlocked device that can take any Wizard ROM.

What's the difference between CID unlock(using LokiWiz) and this proceudure (Hard Spl)?

To be honest, very little. Both leave you free to flash a ROM of your choice .
This just uses the same 'methods' as used with newer HTC devices and the G4 Wizards.
It will also be easy enough to wrap with ROM's to create 'G3' SoftSPL upgrades that flash to any G3 device without messing about. Just grab the installer, drop your nb.nbf of choice and run the upgrade.
I'll try and bundle up such an installer tonight if I get time.
Hmmm, why do I feel like I have hijacked this thread .
John
So You mean:
You can Create such an installer than given a certain NBF (OS) does even the CID unlock itself.
It would be great
Aldo
I bought the Qtek 9100 and i would like to upgrade it. I read a few tutorials, but i still dont understand everything, this will be my first phone ROM upgrade. Please excuse me if these questions are totaly noob.
Help much appreciated.
1. I dont know if i need to CID unlock my phone, but if i do which is better, more commonly used (or safer) : SoftSPL or HardSPL?
2. I would like to upgrade to IPhone killer - Windows Mobile 6.5.1 - Build 23075, but i dont know if this ROM is supported by the qtek 9100 G4. Will it run good or not?
3. Is it possible to make a backup of the currently installed ROM, if in any unfortunate scenario i ruin my phone and then restore it to what it was before?
4. I am running windows 7 and i saw some posts saying that it cant be used for flashing and that you need virtual xp. What do i need to do in virtualxp to make it work then?
I would tell you to search or use the wiki, but I'll assume you already have, lol.
1. Yes, you need to CID-unlock the phone before flashing anything. My first and only flash was using SoftSPL, and had no problems.
2. Check the ROM topic, does it say "G4 safe" or "OS only"? Don't try do flash ROMs that aren't cooked for your device. A WM6.5 can run a little slow, dunno.
3. Yes, there is a way, but if you brick your phone, all you'll have is a paper weight and a backed-up ROM, lol. Check here: backing up ROM
4. Can you install XP itself? That would be better I guess.
Cheers
Hello there
Well this is going to be my first flash, so I just wanna make sure I got this all correct. I want to install Mighty Rom (I think). So I am going to:
1) Connect Rhodium400 (Sprint CDMA) to PC (via USB)
2) Run the Hard-SPL for CDMA on my PC
I assume the SPL with auto sync to the Rhodium, correct? Or will I need to do something to get it to transfer correctly onto the Phone?
3) Download the Mighty Rom from mightyrom.com
Which version do I want for my Phone? My phones stats are:
HTC Rhodium400
Carrier: Sprint
Manila: 2.5.20121324.1
OS: 5.2.1889 (21889.5.0.87)
Rom: 2.04.651.4 (Stock)
Rom Date: 03/06/10
Radio: 2.32.00WF (Stock)
UI: Sense UI
Now I am not sure where to go from here, so I have a few questions:
1) Do I format my SD card?
2) Do I transfer the Rom to the Root of the SD or do I make a folder for it?
3) What do I name the Rom?
4) I am looking for speed and for a fully customizable home, would mighty rom suffice?
5) After flashing can I still install .cab files like normal?
6) What Rom would YOU suggest (not what is the best, but what do you like the most). Remember, this is for a CDMA
Sorry for the long post, but this is my first flash so I am a bit nervous. I could not possibly afford a replacement Rhodium (as of right now, anyway). So I appologize for being a newb, but greatly appreciate any advice I can get.
Thanks inAdvance (unless nobody helps, lol)
You can do flashing from your PC that won't affect your SD card data. If you follow the steps in thread "Flashing for noobs sticky" it will suit you fine.
Just be sure you don't miss any step - it will save your time.
As for the ROM it's like with cars - no one can tell, you have to try. Unlike cars, this is only time consuming, not money consuming Personally I use the Eneregy roms, it's the TOP you can have and still fully customize (e.g. if you don't use Manilla/Sense like I don't). Be sure to have the latest Energy and take a peek into the NRGs posts, he explains everything with his rom so you can pick the version that will suit you most.
How long did it take you to get your license? Did you get it quick or did you wait long? I put in teh request on wednesday and I have yet to get any type of response.......not sure how long its suppose to take
As far as I remember, I used the online part of the installation process of the HARD SPL and therefore I needed no code.
well after some searching i finally found the Rom for me. I got everything setup and working great (first try too, lol).
I went with Bigs MaxSense (Build 21889). This rom is amazing. It looks stunning and runs so fast and smooth I don't even know what to do, haha.
Thanks again for the heads up. Now I am off to try and find some additional widgits and customizations for it.
You're in the wrong forum though. For help with CDMA TP2s, you need to go to the CDMA sub-forum
Short history - purchased a used G1 to see what android was all about. Proceeded to root, and start the upgrading process - made a mistake with the Death SPL - and bricked the phone.
Just got a donor phone off ebay, and proceeded to replace the motherboard - and now have a working phone again.
To date - I have rooted the phone, and am in the process of reading, reading some more - to make sure I get this right the second time around.
I was reading this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679 and downloaded the following rom / file - "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip" which is step 4 in the thread".
The thread states that FILE 4 Download the "1.6 Recovery Image" for your Dream/G1/ADP1 or for your Magic/ION/MT3G (This is NOT a recovery image, it is a ROM that you can flash from recovery)
I flashed the rom - and stopped there. Let the phone set up, and happened to notice that this devphone rom had the option to skip the gmail set up, which is great because I do not have a data plan. I was able to get in, connect to my wifi, and set everything up.
Is the devphone rom a usable daily rom ? To the best of your knowledge, is there anything missing in this rom ? My phone is up and running - everything seems to be okay - so am just wondering.
This may be a bogus question - and I may get flamed, but - am new to the whole android os and have already bricked my phone once by going too quickly - so decided to read, read, read - and ask questions.
Any feedback greatly appreciated

That rom is basically stock. There are a lot of improvements from other rooted roms that the stock may not have. If you want to experiment, flash your recovery.img again from terminal and flash CM6 RC1 or similar.
Thanks for the reply - appreciate it.
One last thing - read most of the posts I could find on rooting, and because I messed up once - will follow the "measure twice -cut once" philosophy and ask a question.
Once you root the phone - it is rooted for good, right ?
I know there are posts on how to unroot your phone - but that is a process that needs to be followed.
I know, noob questions - asked hundreds of times, just double checking
Thanks

Unless you do something REALLY STUPID, like write an NBH file to the phone.
When gaining root for the first time, the FIRST THING to do is write a good engineering SPL to it. I recommend 1.33.2003 (ends in a THREE, not a 5). It is fully compatible with the stock SPL, but is also the most powerful engineering SPL that allows fastboot flashing the radio partition.
Once the engineering SPL is installed, DO NOT EVER REMOVE IT and then you can NEVER lose root (unless you do something really stupid, like flash an NBH).
