T-mobile ROM vs. i-Mate ROM - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hello.
I've heard somewhere that the i-Mate ROM hasn't got any ExtROM. Is That true?
And another question: How can I downgrade a ROM what is says the next message: Upgrade Only!

iMate simply doesn't have any additonal files loaded in the Extended ROM. T-Mobile has specific customizations, like setting up the phone and text messaging to work on their network. If you use your phone on T-Mobile, I'd stick with their ROM (or a custom T-Mobile ROM) unless you're comfortable with changing all of the settings yourself.
As for the downgrade issue, you need to CID unlock your phone.

I've already CID unlocked my PDA, but the upgrade program says UPgrade Only. Did I missed something?
The I-mate ROM hasn't got any extrom, and the space of the extrom goes to the storage/program memory? so if I upgrade to an i-mate ROm I should get more storage/progam mem?

Replacing the MDA Vario Rom / Extended Rom

Right now I am happy with my MDA Vario NL, except for one thing: T-Mobile branding. I've been reading a lot lately on this website and I figured out how to CID unlock and upgrade my T-Mobile ROM with let say Qtek 9100 WWE or i-Mate WWE (both in english).
Before I do this I just want to make sure if replacing/upgrading my T-Mobile ROM is sufficient to remove all the T-Mobile branding form the phone, including the splash screen at start-up, themes sounds etc.
Do I need to replace my Extended ROM as well with a compatible Qtek/i-Mate version to get rid of the T-Mobile stuff and how do you do this?? I have not been able to unlock my T-Mobile Extended ROM due to some errors. Is there an easy way to replace it??

How to upgrade/change/replace Extended rom

I updated my T-Mobile MDA Vario from OS 1.6.2.2 to Qtek ENG 1.6.7.1 and the os is running perfectly.
The only thing im stuck at is the following: The extended rom customalizations from T-mobile NL **** up a lot of functions, like the today screen, error on boot.
I would like to use the Qtek ENG 1.6.7 Extended rom2 now but I cant seem to find how to change/replace/upgrade the Extended rom.
How is this done?
Unfortuneately any ROMs after 1.6.x.x have the extended ROM protected. If you really want to go down this route you would first need to use aWizard to backup your latest Qtek 1.6.7.1 ROM to a nba file. Then you would need to load back the T-mobile full ROM so that you could use aWizard again to backup the Extended ROM only.
You would then need to flash a pre 1.6.x.x Full ROM to allow you to write/delete the extended ROM contents.
Finally, you could copy the t-mobile files to the extended ROM and then reload the 1.6.7.1 aWizard backup.y
A word of caution though as I F**ked up my T-mobile wizard using aWizard to re-load my OS ROM, and as a result I have had to return the PDA for repair (hopefully under warranty??).
Apparantly there will be a new T-mobile ROM update in march - hopefully with the Bluetooth update we all seem to want!!
I have T-Mobile OS rom 1.6.2.2 whitch also haves the extended rom lock. I do have a backup of my t-mobile extended rom.
So I need to downgrade my os to a version older than 1.6.x.x and change the extended rom. Then I need to put my 1.6.7 version back?
Yes that's correct but first you would need to backup the 1.6.7.1 ROM only using aWizard before you downgrade to a pre 1.6.x.x Full ROM. This will make the extended ROM writable again then you can re-load the saved 1.6.7.1 nba file using aWizard - but note the warning!!

Need my MDA back to TMOBILE

I flashed my firmware with one of the Cingular firmwares. (my mda was already unlocked) Now when I try to use one of the tmobile firmwares to flash back it gives me an error. This is what I have installed now.
Rom 1.8.10.12
Rom date 12/1/05
Radio version 02.13.11
Protocol 4.1.13.05
IPL 2.21
SPL 2.25
GSM 02.13.11
OS 1.8.10.2
Can anyone tell me what is going on here. The phone is working and the data services work. I need someone to post the link to the best firmware flash for my TMOBILE MDA (us version) I have service with Cingular. I need the ROM that has the best receiption and performance and the most features that will work on my MDA Please help.
if you want to go back to the T-Mobile original settings, you need to upgrade to the custom ROM and then downgrade back. If you just want to have the T-Mobile settings, stick with the 2.17 custom rom that Xelecin cooked. I've found that his 2.21 rom was a lttle buggy, but his 2.17 rom is spot on. It has the cid/sim unlockers built in.
good luck

Another Question
I did that and gave the MDA to my wife. I am looking to get a new phone and lookng at the Cingular 8125. Will I be able to unlock this phone with any of the utilities on this site.

[How-To] Install any 2.x ROM in a CID-Locked G3 or G4 Wizard

Hi,
a few days ago i wrote on this forum that i had been able to install an italian ROM on a G4, CID-Locked Wizard. Since then, i've received several mails and PM from users asking me how i did. Instead of replying each one, i though it was better to write a tutorial and post it here for everyone to read/comment/correct it.
Here it is. Together with the tools you'll need to perform the update.
PS: in this tutorial i'm not explaining how to CID-UNlock a G4 or G3 (>= 2.21) phone. There is not yet a way to CID unlock these phones. I'm just describing how to circumvent the CID-lock problem by installing a ROM deprived of the IPL and SPL parts.
DISCLAIMER: THE PROCEDURE I’M GOING TO EXPLAIN DEALS WITH ROM ‘COOKING’ AND THUS IT MAY CAUSE SEVERE DATA LOSS OR EVEN IRREMEDIABLY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE!
THE AUTHOR, NOR EVERY OTHER PERSON INVOLVED (E.G. THE ROM TOOLS DEVELOPERS), SHALL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MALFUNCTIONS OR DAMAGES THIS PROCEDURE MAY CAUSE.
By following this tutorial, you're removing both the bootloaders (IPL and SPL) from a rom of your choice. This means that, if you don't make errors while 'cooking' the rom, you cannot completely destroy (brick) your phone. Sure, you could end up with a non-booting rom but, as long as you can get to the three colors screen (the bootloader screen) you'll always be able to install a different (or your previous) working rom.
On the other hand, messing with IPL and SPL (i.e. installing a rom containing IPL and SPL in a CID locked device) is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and MUST be avoided in most cases!!!
Installing a 2.xx rom without messing with your phone's IPL and SPL is exactly what this tutorial tries to explain.
NEVER INSTALL ROMS OR FOLLOW TUTORIALS IF YOU'RE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!
ALWAYS ASK BEFORE PROCEEDING! A SIMPLE QUESTION MAY SAVE YOUR PHONE FROM DEATH!
Worked perfect!
Thank you very much for the clear explanation!!! 8)

Leave the CID field empty and specify the language you're installing (ITA for italian, WWE for english).
Hi,
I have installed this SW on my MDA T-mobile:
IPL:2.21.0001
SPL:2.21.0001
GSM:2.19.11
OS:2.21.2.6
EXROM:2.21.2.109
What is the best Italian ROM to flash inside?

This is quite Off Topic here, anyway you can use K-Jam 2.18 italian ROM (find it here: ftp://ftp.clubimate.com/K-JAM_ITA_2180901_21809104_20710_ship.zip)
German to WWE
Worked perfect, no glitches! Thanks for the help!
So is there any issues with using a mismatched ipl/spl bootloader on my G4 equipped O2 mini S?
I really want to install Mr. Clean's Clean ROM, but i am afraid of bricking it.
I have done ROm upgrades before by CID unlocking my old Qtek9100 G3 (but my foolish friend dropped it into a cup of coffeee and killed it).
I will admit, the Mr. CLean Rom was WAY faster than my OE 2.21 ROm on my O2.
Is there anyway to go back and uninstall? Ie. download rom from O2 website to restore it?

You CAN install MrClean AKU2.3 ROM BUT only if you first modify it following my guide: you cannot touch the IPL/SPL parts!!!
There are two reasons for not installing the original, unmodified MrClean ROM:
1) G4 phones cannot be CID unlocked. This means that you can replace their original IPL/SPL ONLY with a newer version made by the very same operator: e.g. if you have a 2.21 WWE T-mobile ROM then you can ONLY update this rom with a version > 2.21 made by T-mobile!!! You CANNOT use any other language nor any other operator's ROMs (cingular's, qtek's, etc).
2) MrClean ROM, as all the other home made ROMs you'll find in this forum, can be installed ONLY in G3 models because it contains only IPL and SPL version 1.0 (G4 phones need version 2.0)
Basically then, you have only 3 choices:
a) Follow my tutorial and be able to install every 2.x ROM you like (both stock ROMs and home made ones, every language, every operator). The only limitation is that you cannot install 1.x ROMs!
b) Install ONLY ROMs that are the OFFICIAL update to the one you have currently installed (e.g. if you have cingular 2.25 WWE rom then you'll be able to update it only when and if, a new, official, wwe, cingular ROM will be released). You won't be able to install a different language ROM nor a ROM made by a different operator, nor a home made ROM (like MrClean).
c) you can CID unlock your G4 wizard using some online service but: it will cost you money and you won't still be able to install home-made ROM 'cos they contain only IPL/SPL version 1.0 (you'll still need IPL/SPL version 2.0)
That said, i strongly suggest you solution (a)! It's free, it's very simple (it may seem complex but after the first time it'll be straight forward), it's the safest (because you don't replace the boot loader IPL and SPL) and it let you install whichever 2.x ROM you like!
Bye
Thank you risidoro,
Yes, i do realize the G4 IPL/SPL must not be altered to prevent from bricking the device.
I will try the Mr. Clean ROM tonight using your tutorial. I guess my only question is, will there be an issue using a 2.21 G4 IPL SPL on a 2.24ROM?
DOes the bootloader actual change with new ROMS?

Bootloader and ROM version numbers usually are the same (so ROM 2.24 should have IPL/SPL 2.24) but they can be different. I've used IPL/SPL 2.21.001 with both 2.18 and 2.24 ROMs.
Maybe newer ROMs, greater than 2.24, will require an updated IPL/SPL so you'll be obliged to CID unlock your phone. By then however, i hope there'll be a free CID unlocking tool for G4.

Thank you risidoro!! I was regretting getting my O2 miniS G4, in place of my broken Qtek 9100 G3.
I will give it a shot tonight. I noticed that the 2.24 ROM was much faster when I used it on my Qtek, over any other ROM.

My two phones were both factory simunlocked but i heard that some people is successfully using LokiwizMSL 0.3a to sim unlock G4 wizards.
Just follow the author's instruction. The procedure is staightforward.

Thanks for the superfast reply, actually waiting for someone to get me this phone, hopefully this week, wil try it out once I get it.
Using Clean ROM, does it just improve startup time, or does it improve performace of the phone in general ?
Do you have to re-install software after ROM update ?

Upgrading the OS part of a ROM cause your phone to hard reset, so yes, you'll have to reinstall everything. If, on the other hand, you upgrade any other part (GSM, Splash, ExtROM, HTC) but not the OS then you won't loose your data.
MrClean ROM and Summitter's ROM are both very fast. The latter contains cingular's customizations in extROM (they don't slow down the phone, they're mainly registry settings), some ringtones and compact framework 2.0 in ROM. If you're not a cingular user then i suggest you take the OS part from summitter's rom and the extrom from the MrClean. Then join the two parts with nb2nbf and flash to your device.
Bye
Any reason to take Summitter's OS is it faster or something then Mr Clean ?

No. Both summitter and mrclean use the same OS ROM (2.24.10 AKU2.3) hence they have the SAME, IDENTICAL speed.
The difference is that Summitter manually edited the original ROM and added a lot of ringtones, themes and, most important, the .net compact framework 2.0. If you install Summitter OS, then, you'll have the same mrclean basic OS plus a lot of goodies that don't take any space in storage since they're in ROM (compact framework 2.0 alone would take about 5mb of your precious storage if you installed it on mrclean).

T-Mobile/Generic ROM on Cing. 8125?

Hello!
I recently purchased a Cingular 8125 and am waiting for it to show up in the mail. I am a T-Mobile subscriber and plan on unlocking the 8125 as soon as I get it so I can use it with the T-Mobile network, after performing a ROM upgrade.
My question is this: I'm assuming that since it is a Cingular phone, it's going to be pre-loaded with Cingular crap. Not that the T-Mobile crap is any better, but is there a way to install the T-Mobile (or generic/unbranded, like Qtek or I-Mate) ROM onto the 8125?
I mean, the MDA and 8125 are both HTC Wizards, and the hardware is the same, right? The button layout is just different? Would the T-Mobile ROM work on the 8125? Or even better, is there a generic non-branded ROM that I could install on the 8125?
Thanks much,
-G
You can flash the 8125 to the current MDA ROM using Risodoro's instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088
That one? If not, could you point me to the thread?
Thanks!
T-Mobile ROM on 8125
Get a Cingular 8125
Unlock your 8125 - CID unlock the phone with lokiwiz 0.2b -
download T-mobile latest ROM from here
http://www.t-mobileapps.com/downloadcenter/software_detail.cfm?id=80
Connect through activesync
run the downloaded file, follow upgrade instructions on screen.
That's it, I did it, and it works fine...Good Luck
Where can I get Lokiwiz 0.2b?
I downloaded the one that was in these forums, but it doesn't have any of the tools needed. Lokiwiz 0.3a has them, but it's missing "pdocwrite.exe" and "preboot.exe"...
Where can I get the whole package?
EDIT: n/m, found it. Trying it now
EDIT: I tried it, I get "CopyFileToTFFS(cidunlocked.bin:0, 0, 00010000)
ERROR: ITWriteDisk - An internal error occurred." and I still can't install the T-Mobile ROM.
IPL and SPL are 2.25, that means it's a G3, right? How do I CID unlock this?
