OFFICIAL Cingular 8125 AKU2.2 ROM released/link. Experience? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Originally posted in a long thread by iceman0921. Figured I'd post a separate thread so people could find it. The thread it was posted in had like 186 posts so it would get buried in there.

I haven't tried it yet, still running 2.17 Summiter Custom ROM.
Please post your experience using this ROM.

i can't update yet since i'm at work

My "quick" experience thusfar:
OS Build 14928.2.2.0
IPL/SPL: 2.25
ROM 2.25.11.1 WWE
Radio/GSM 2.25.11
Ext. ROM 2.25.11.102
I haven't noticed much different with this build versus the 2.23 that summiter released late last week.
Note that it still has that USBSwitch program installed by default, so you will need to change it from Serial to RNDIS to have a reliable ActiveSync. Note that I think this is in one of the CAB files due to the fact that my phone synced before customization using RNDIS by default, but after customizations, I had to go to USBSwitch to revert back to RNDIS.
It is an AKU2.2 device and has the GetGood, Clearview PDF, and ExpressMail installed by default.
I can't tell whether or not it has A2DP as I don't use Bluetooth devices. Push Mail works well with my Exchange 2003 SP2 server.
(Summiter: If you read this, consider including the "Device Lock" application found in the development section of this forum)

*Email vibrate while sleeping bug is fixed...
*If you put the device to sleep, while plugged in through the USB cable, Windows drops the connection. Still Power Charges though.
*MediaNET connection not there. Has a generic connection with Cingular GPRS connection strings.
*WIFI cert enroller not working for personal certs. You can still do manually using PFX import utils
*Seems about as speedy as Summiter's 2.17 release.
Will report as more things come up.

WAP pages load quickly and the default settings for GPRS allow connection to GMAIL etc without any alterations.
Appears to be solid at this point.

I'm currently away from my BT headset, and haven't had a chance to pair it yet....
Anyone tested with Voice Dial??????
I'll try it tonight.

does it re-SIM lock the phone?
just wondering...

Sorry man...haven't tried...I've got a Cingular 8100, running on Cingular...I have a T-Mob Sim around...If I can find it, I'll post back..
If I had to guess though...I would say it is SIM locked again.

Consider this my appreciation for getting Summiter and the boyz getting me off of the crappy Cingular OS bundled on the 8125.....

It appears to, I know that I had used AWizard to Sim unlock my phone but now I tried a T-Mo sim and it didn't work! Just asked for the unlock code.

Thanks for upping this icema!
At first glance it appears to be the same as the aku2.2 (ROM ver 2.17.11.1) ROM, excpet that the radio stack is slightly different. The core OS and extended ROM are the same code-wise (only versioning numbers are changed). The bootloader code appears the same as well.
But, at least we have a full build with a more appropriately incremented build number.
I'll get crackin' on some stuff tonight.

I have intalled this but I can not find the cabs to add A2DP to it. Summiter what cab do you use in your builds? I looked on the FTP site and I can not find it. Want to use my headphones again.

Here you go,
I always unlock the Extended ROM and copy out every last file. Then I empty it. I figure if I can't build custom content then at least I can clean it out and prevent it from even trying to customize on hard reset.

is it worth going from summiters to this?

Hmmm, really want to upgrade. Only question is - how likely do you think it is that this will be the official Cingular release? Would hate to upgrade and then see official Cingular release in 2 weeks is slightly different.

Yeah, if vibe-on-email is important to you at this very moment. =)
There will be some customizations done shortly. (a2dp, cf2, themes, ringers, etc).
Speaking of themes, now that the date is back to being a single line, the themes included in previous ROMs look bad. (They had a darker background behind the 2-line date/time). Anyone have some suggestions for themes to add? Ideally, I'm looking for themes that will appeal to the widest audience.

I'm guessing, and only guessing, that since they've tightened this thing down with the connection settings change (got rid of the whole MediNET connection w/ proxy disaster) and removed the stray settings that are typically present on bare OEM devices (phone net select, phone TZ autoselect), it's pretty close to being a final release. Icema said that if this one passes regression testing it will be final, although I don't know his source for that info.
This ROM was built on 5/11, so I suspect it's been through testing since that time.

O2 V1.11.171 Now Available

Just checked the o2 site and it seems this upgrade is now available, not tried it yet but will tonight
hi, which site are you downloading from?
www.my-xda.com
Any news on whether it is worth upgrading to the .171 ROM? Seems as though the radio is back to 1.00?

We are waiting for more info about the new rom!
Might be an anomoly but I tried the 171 ROM modified and my device has hard reset twice, with the original ROM the phone stopped working and needed a hard reset to sort it out, twice.
Think I'll keep to my 162 ROM. How's everyone else found it?
http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_soft3.html
here's the direct link for 1.11.171 - just downloading and will let you know how I get on after discovering that 1.11.170 (blackberry)didn't work with radio version as supplied.
Hi!
When I have install it. It apeared the radio 1.100
So still old radio, not v1.104

that is correct. Radio 1.104 is not compatible with the Blackberry system. This is the main reason that ROM 1.11.170 was removed from the o2 website as it had upgraded the Radio version from 1.100 to 1.104.
Hi! I've just bought an O2XDAIIi. I just wonder which ROM version I should use to upgrade my XDA. Could anyone give me an advice?

I'm using Blackberry and have upgraded to the latest o2 ROM - 1.11.171. If you aren't using Blackberry, try using Pugs cooked version of 1.11.169.
Is there any change to Blackberry functionality on 71 over 69?
Won't be changing if there isn't.
I belive that if your using the o2email open and not the BES version you won;t lose your Calendar options.
We use BES so no need to change then - thanks
Well ROM version 1.11.171 seems to be as stable as 1.11.169 and I don't have to use the workaround to sync Outlook Calendar.
I wonder if o2 are going to release more XDA phones that can use Blackberry - I quiet fancy the o2 Atom but it doesn't list BB which is a shame.
171 ROM is the BT reliability resolved
Symbasean,
Stating that the 171 ROM is as stable as the 169 ROM is a little bit of a two edged sword for me.
When I applied the O2 ROM last October / November it trashed my bluetooth functionality, effectively making my Jabra 250V a large black ear ring and the XDA 11i an electronic chocolate tea pot, for use in a car.
Can you sense my frustration with O2, who offered me £10 off my next bill as compensation and then didn't give it to me.
I switched to one of PUG's home cooked ROMs and this has been 80% successful, but randomly fails to deliver the sound.
His version has been a saviour, but would the 171 be an improvement for the BT stability and reliability?
Sorry for the incredibly rambling first post. :?:
I upgraded to the new software last night and have noticed one small annoyance. I used to be able to to deactivate GPRS by clicking the connectivity icon in the title bar and tapping disconnect. Now the disconnect option isn't there for GPRS. Eventually I discovered that I could turn off GPRS by holding the end call button.

two points:-
1. please spell my name correctly.
2. "Well ROM version 1.11.171 seems" - note also the word, "Seems". I make no direct comparison on stablity, only that mine has not crashed - caveat empore......
Apologies
Symbaseian
Sorry for the mistake.
I shall try the ROM and see.
I have to agree caveat emptor is an appropriate warning with this particular device.
If it worked as well as it is should, straoight out of the box, it would be excellent.
But it does have some way to go, and without the likes of these forums, it would not happen.

I totally agree. When I first got one of these I couldn't use TT3 let alone TT5 without it locking up all the time if I used anything other than my old 128mb Compaq SD card, but having listened and learned on this forum and also on pocketgpsworld I now have a stable XDAIIi with blackberry.
It's taken a long time to get to where I'm fully happy with the device (except camera performance - but I very rarely use that anyway) often involving Tomtom tech support, o2 tech support and these forums. If you feel happy using Pugs ROM version without blackberry please go ahead, but for me that's not an option.
It's just a shame that we have had to co-develope to get a product that is finally starting to show everything that it first promised.....

8125 users: custom AKU 2.2 ROM now available

As far as I know, this is the only public way to get AKU 2.2 on a Wizard. I'm sure the T-MO and other folks will get at tearing this apart so they can have what we now have. =)
Here's the scoop:
OS: 5.1.195 build 14928.2.2.0
Radio: 02.13.11
Bootloader: 2.21
Media Player: 10 build 14928
Free Storage: 43.48M
Free Program: 24.57M
The ROM version is reported as 2.17.11.1 - this is the version on devices distributed by Cingular and Microsoft to partners, testers, execs, etc.
I've kept the customizations as they were created by Cingular for this build, with the following short list of additions:
A2DP
Multi-select contacts
Wireless Today screen plugin
Transparent carrier logo (used when displaying phone pad)
Disable prompting for unsigned cab file installs
Aku 2.2 allows for placing the clock on the title bar in place of the battery meter. The requisite registry entry is in place and this is the default behavior.
Over the coming days I'll create some customized versions of this ROM similar to others I've created, and based on feedback from my request for suggestions.
If you have never successfully CID unlocked, please do so since the SPL is sourced from another carrier's ROM.
Start you dowloadin' now:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Cingular/Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU22_Basic.exe
Big thanks again to Mr. or Mrs. <anonymous> for getting the AKU 2.2 bits to me.
EDIT:
Although the clock is now the default in the title bar, if you want it to display while other programs are open, you'll need to go to Start->Settings->System->Clock & Alarms->More and check "Display the clock on the title bar in all programs"
Just thought I'd clarify...
Also, despite what has been said, AKU 2.2 does not include Compact Framework 2. I'll add it later.
Gawd, I've been waiting for this forever. Thanks Summiter. Downloading now.

Sucessfully flashed. Testing now. BTW, I manually soft resetted prior to customizations. (I like to do my own). It's great to see the time up in the taskbar again, rather than that useless battery meter.

It's downloaded and sitting on my harddrive. Can someone post whats different (apart from clock in title bar) between this ROM and the 2.17 AKU2 ROM that's been out..
Don't feel like flashing it and re-customizing if there's nothing major. My Cingular 8125 running 2.17 is working great - it never reboots, crashes and runs fast. Its been running for over 3 weeks straight now without a reboot and doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon.

Browsing through the files, there's quite a few that are changed in some way from AKU 2.0. What those changes are, I don't know. Finding details on AKU updates has proven quite a challenge.
At this point I'd say that unless the clock is important, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. I've yet to see how battery life is affected.

The bulk of the cab files do little more than set or change registry entries and provisioning settings. Very few of them actually install anything. I looked at most of them prior to building the ROM and there's nothing that should impact performance one way or the other.
i just got my 8125 so this couldn't have come at a better time. i'm having problems with active sync, though. the default shipping rom, and the aku2 from earlier are fine, but this aku2.2 is dropping the activesync after a minute or so. it's odd and frustrating as it makes it hard to get anything installed on the device.
i'll keep on working on it, it could be something dumb on my end. thanks so much for this cool stuff.
since i hadn't installed much, flashing twice in a day was no big deal. but for future reference, once i have a lot of things installed and my device customized fully, is there a way to save all of that to have it restored after a flash?
in the same vein, about how long until your next release? weeks, months? i'd hate to have this all pimped out and then start from scratch next week. but i suppose that's the price you pay to be on the bleeding edge. thanks again!

Let's see if we can knock this AS problem out quickly. So, when you establish AS and go to install an app, the AS connection drops? Does it then re-establish itself? Do you hear the "badonk" sound when it drops that indicates the usb device has disconnected? Can you replicate it with any particular app? (I'd like to try it)
For what it's worth, I've installed several things with no problem. That doesn't mean there isn't some funkiness going on though..
As far as other ROMs, I'll probably have another 1 or 2 out within a week that has CF2 and a few other things like ringers and themes.
Alright one suggestion for your next release. I don't install much of this stuff but I think we can ALL agree that setting the time zone to -5 RIGHT after windows prompts us for the time zone is annoying...stupid cingular must think EVERYONE is EAST coast. So I think that one can go eh?
Thanx; Summiter (and of course the masked man) you guys are the win!
BTW: not to state the obvious but that last CAB is A2DP... I will go buy a headset just to test it when I can find one @ a local store.
Would also liek to add that the time zone TAB is present under phoen options by default and enabled =)

i've been testing it out, and it's pretty odd. as long as i'm not installing/transfering anything the sync stays connected. but when i try to install something (navigon 5, 12mb) it will drop the connection about halfway through. same thing with mapopolis (~3mb), about halfway through then the disconnect sound effect. it won't reconnect until i unplug and replug the usb connector
i'm getting around it for right now by putting everything as cabs onto the minisd card and installing from there. it's hardly ideal, though.
what's CF2?

Hmm, that's a nasty workaround. Let me find something hugemongous to install and see what happens.
CF2 is .Net Compact Framework 2 - a set of .Net components for mobile devices. There's not a whole lot of programs out there that require it, but a popular one - WifiFoFum does. Putting it in ROM saves the ~4 megs of storage space on the device for other stuff, like selections from your illegal mp3 collection, and whatnot.
Another note is that not only is the clock back (like we all like) but the date item on the today screen is now back to taking up only 1 line.
I will be posting anything I notice else I find.
Summiter, did the Cingular rom originally include A2DP?
My headset should be in this weekend and wondering if my rom will have it or should I install yours?
Thanks for getting this out to everyone, cant wait for the customs to start flowing.

i've been testing it out, and it's pretty odd. as long as i'm not installing/transfering anything the sync stays connected. but when i try to install something (navigon 5, 12mb) it will drop the connection about halfway through. same thing with mapopolis (~3mb), about halfway through then the disconnect sound effect. it won't reconnect until i unplug and replug the usb connector
i'm getting around it for right now by putting everything as cabs onto the minisd card and installing from there. it's hardly ideal, though.

Do you by any chance have your device set to go into standby after a couple minutes? (either with OS settings, or via an app like phoneAlarm)
Where can I find the cab file for AD2P ?

sure, in 3 minutes it'll turn off, but the connection dies before the screen times out.
this could be a false alarm though. after installing a handful of things and rebooting a few times, i think it might be ok. i'll definitely keep this thread updated if it goes wacky again.
thanks again, you rock

Let's see if we can knock this AS problem out quickly. So, when you establish AS and go to install an app, the AS connection drops? Does it then re-establish itself? Do you hear the "badonk" sound when it drops that indicates the usb device has disconnected? Can you replicate it with any particular app? (I'd like to try it)
For what it's worth, I've installed several things with no problem. That doesn't mean there isn't some funkiness going on though..
As far as other ROMs, I'll probably have another 1 or 2 out within a week that has CF2 and a few other things like ringers and themes.

I've transferred over 100 megs back and forth to and from the device and haven't had any AS problems...

Meh, I meant to get rid of that cab file....deleted. It won't be in future ROMs.
Radio Shack sells the HT820, and if you live near one that's closing, you can get it for 20-30% off. Buying online is cheapest though, but you don't get instant gratification. =)

2.17 Radio Rom?

Would someone mind extracting and uploading JUST the radio rom from summiter's 2.17 release? I upgraded just my radio to 2.25 when that solo upgrade was posted here, but now I'm thinking that I had better reception with the original radio that was in 2.17. I don't want to have to completely reflash to go back to it....so purty please, could someone post it?
Thanks.

I threw it into the Wiz ROMs upload directory. Let me know how it goes - I've been thinking about trying it myself, but I don't have a compelling reason to since my reception and general radio behavior have been quite good.
Thanks Summiter
I'm having trouble finding it though...I don't see a radio rom that was uploaded today (6/12) in any of the Wizard/* directories...

Riiight about here:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Wizard/Roms/2.17RadioOnly.exe
lol...well there it is (I wasn't in the Uploads directory...just the standard Wizard directory)
The update seemed to go fine and it's now reporting:
ROM - 2.17.7.2 WWE
Radio - 02.07.10
Protocol - 413.1.03
Windows Build 14947.2.0.0
Sitting on my desk before the update, I was searching for signal...I'm now back to 2-3 bars. I also noticed that the 2.25 radio rom running on the 2.17 was the first time that I've ever missed multiple text messages. Within the period of 2 days, I had 4-5 text messages sent to me that I never recieved....1 every now and then is expected...but not 4-5. I'm assuming it was the beta radio rom and hopefully this will clear things up. (I was also having several dropped calls like the others on the forum). I let you know how the update has changed things over the next week or so.
Thanks again!

Yes, it won't erase anything on your phone. Just download and run the program.
I was getting Invalid SIM when trying to send txt messages with 2.25 and the GPRS connection kept dropping and not automatically reconnecting. Guess that's why v2.25 was labeled as BETA

Which of the 2.25 Radio Roms were you using? (from the T-Mobile 2.24 Rom or the Cingular 2.25 Rom)
BTW, there are 4 different Radio only Rom Upgraders in this thread:

That used to happen to me with my MPX200. I was able to fix it by leaving myself a voicemail. Connect to VM from the notification, delete it and it should go away.

I took the same approach though my result looks a bit different than Stangs55 has. I was very happy with the new functionality of the latest ROM but felt the radio side had gone backwards a bit. It went from being fantastic to be on par with my old Nokia 3650, which was no slouch.
In some very unscientific testing in my house, I'm see on average two bars improvement as well.
Cheers,
Tony

How's that there 2.17 radio working out for ya podna?
lol, well Summiter...I do believe that 2.17 is as near to a perfect 8125 rom that you can get ie: it's working out great. For shame on me for trying to switch to the newer 2.2+ roms. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
My wife and I are heading into the Texas hill country this weekend and I was going to wait and post some results after we got back...but so far the choice is obvious for me: In downtown Houston, the 2.17 radio offers considerably better reception and less dropped calls than both the stock and the 2.2+ roms. In fact, it was the 2.17 that saved my Cingular service in the first place as I almost payed the cancellation fees b/c I was so fed up with horrible reception/service. You saved my family $350 in cancellation fees, summiter .
So, yea, it's working out great. Thanks!

There's hills in Texas? We call those speedbumps here in California.. ;-)
Well that's interesting. If the radio that's released on Monday is problematic, I'm going to try 2.17 out for awhile. I'm hoping though that Cingular has thouroughly tested and blessed a radio that is as good. I remember way back when, I was the happiest with the entire 2.17 ROM myself.
not sure if this matter but isnt texas - houston(area to be specific) one ofthe 3g markets ?

Ok, maybe my eyes are getting tired,
Looks like someone removed the 2.17 Radio Rom from the FTP.
Can someone please post it back for me???

but so far not too bad...just under 1gb served....file size ~55MB so....
I think a lot of people hate rapidshare. I know I do. I'll put up with it if I need to, but if there's an alternative, screw 'em.
But thanks for the file...I'm gonna check it out later.

Unluckily they removed the Intent MIDlet manager but i was able to extract it from the 2.24 and i'll post it as a cab tomorrow morning.
Ok, so like I did the SIM/CID unlock when I loaded up 2.17.
I recall something about the unlocking utility used wouldn't hold once you got past the 2.17 ROM [going from 2.17 to 2.24, etc.]
Is there another unlocking utility I need in order to upgrade to 2.26?

Phone Dial Pad...
This ROM is working great for me. It fixed my one big problem with the 2.24 ROM, which was the phone time never being correct. I have one issue, though...
When I first start the device and it prompts me for the password on my SIM, I get the nice blue phone dialing screen I'm used to (from the 2.24 ROM). But whenever I access the phone after that, I get a far less pretty T-Mobile dial screen (it's in pink and grey...ick). Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas how to fix?
Thanks,
Manzil
I just installed this and I must say that the screens just pop out at me right off the bat without applying any spped registry tweeks, overclocking, etc.
I'm installing my essential Cingular mods tonight and will kick the tires tomorrow.
Sumitter, looking foward to your work on this! (If it passes muster ... )

Change to the windows default theme instead of the tmobile theme...I think it's under settings, today...
It does seem to be working quite well for me, also. It's not displaying any of the problems I had with roms after 2.17 and it was reasonably fast even before the usual improvements were added. The T-Zones Today item is kinda worthless, IMO, and the Comm Manager doesn't add a lot but it's at least easier to understand at a glance. All in all, a decent update.
Anybody use O2 miniS?Are there any prolem with symbol(when press blue dot) when you use this ROM.When i use 2.24,the symbol text isn't suit with keyboard!
Re: Phone Dial Pad...
That didn't work. In fact, I did a hard reset of the device, changed theme to Windows default, and everything is blue -- except the phone dial pad which stays with the "T-Mobile look". The funny thing is that when I first turn on the phone radio (not the device itself, but the phone) I am prompted to enter my PIN code for my SIM. This dial pad is the nice blue 3-d dial pad. But every other time I get to the phone dial pad, it's the ugly T-mobile "flat" looking one in pink and grey...
It can't just me be!

Thanks, I finally was able to download it. One question before I upgrade. Maybe Faria can give his input. I am a T-mobile user currently on the 2.19.11 radio rom. This seems to be the best one overall for me since it allows both data and voice calls at the same time, there are no missed calls. But reception/signal is somewhat not good. Does this new radio give better reception for T-Mobile as well as allowing both data and voice?
Thanks
Great radio rom but isn't 2.69.11 newer then 2.40.11?
Well, right, it is newer most likely. The thing is, newer isn't necessarily better for each person's circumstance. Radios are tuned for particular providers in particular places and are usually matched with particular roms. However, in my case for example, with Cingular US service, and WM6 roms, my experience and that of many others is that the 2.19.11 T-mobile UK rom is the best. The others were inconsistent in alerting me to incoming calls and pending voicemails. However the data and sound was better with the newer radios. For me not missing calls was most important, so I stick with the older rom. But, this is a new one for me, and hope springs eternal, so I'll probably give it a try and see if I can have the best of both worlds like those T-Mobile guys.
Regards,
working well on farias "the real thing"?

From what I understand, 2.69.11 is the latest released German Radio rom, but 2.40.11 is a US released rom. So this may work better for US customers. I hope we can use 2.40.11 with WM6!

Just installed it! I will post back my results.
Since I finally experienced the awful delay in SMS receiving on the 2.69 radio ROM (after several weeks of success, I missed 4 important text messages in an hour's timeframe), I'm game for this. Downloading now...
So far my signal seems to be much better than 2.19 radio. but only time will tell.

I too am now noticing a delay\lack of SMS\Voicemail Msg after WEEKS of 2.69 working like a charm. I thought I was one of the lucking ones but now I am not so sure. Who knows how long this has been happening. Anyway, downloaded and installing right now.
Working great on WM2005 .
thanx Faria .
by the way...this is a US radio.....sorry i cant name the carrier at the moment.
I've installed this on my Cingular 8125 on the Cingular network last night. I received a test sms and another SMS from a friend in a timely manner. All test calls I've put through have worked so far. I was even downloading a webpage with Opera and phoned in and the call came through. So far so good... Tomorrow (Monday) will be the real test when I'm back to work, but I'll try to give it a workout today.
thanks for the info so far and please continue to post information on this rom and its working with wm6
P.S.-Sorry for not being able to also post information but in what i do missing a call/calls or missing a sms/sms' would cost me alot of $$$$$...(so thanks for being guinea pigs...poor pigs lol)
First timer dumb question
Hi. I am running Nottoosmart's system with radio 2.19. Things have been pretty stable, but there are times when I've had to reboot in order to reacquire the phone carrier after sleep (e.g. softreset). Also, subjectively I believe I have some signal problems when in places where there is already a weak signal.
So, bottom, line, I am considering trying this radio.
But, I have never flashed a radio before and I'd like to avoid having this become a "federal project." So a few questions:
1. I can flash the radio back and forth (e.g. ->2.40, ->2.19) *without* touching the OS (e.g. wm6 rom/ram), is that correct?
2. There are several executables in the zip: EnterBootloader.exe, romupdateutility.exe, RUUGetInfo.exe; I realize there are tutorials ad infinitum posted here, but can someone help me save some time by letting me know how to install the radio, do I just run "romupdateutility" over activesync, or is there more to do?
Please don't flame. I am an engineer, just not experienced in burning radios to MDA's. I assume the radio goes into a portion of rom that is dedicated to the phone processor of the OMAP chip?

Hello,
1) You can flash the Radio rom without messing with the OS. All of your settings and files will not be affected. It does not require a hard reset.
2) Just run the romupdateutility.exe. It works the same when you flash a new os rom, it just takes a fraction of the time due to the fact you are only flashing the radio. I just connect via USB and let activesync do its thing then run romupdateutility.exe, the program will kill activesync itself.
I hope this helps.
