I would like to connect my S730 to my laptop (Windows XP) via USB, and then use the S730 as a modem for a dial-up connection. That means using a connectoid on the laptop to specify the phone number. I can do this with other cellphones. For my JasJar (WM 5 for Pocket PC Phone Edition), I needed a driver for the laptop and then need to use the Wireless Modem on the JasJar. For my Cingular 3125 (WM 5 for Smartphone), I need to Activate the modem connection. I haven't found a way with my S730. "Internet Sharing" seems to let a laptop share a connection initiated on the S730, which means the S730 has all the settings, including the phone number where appropriate (this is definitely not as clear as I would like:-(
Thanks.
That is how it works. Internet sharing...then make sure all of your settings are correct...then connect. Worked fine for me...better than the dial-up way with WM5.
Yeah, its extreemly simple, just connect your phone to the computer and make sure the computer registers the connection, can close or minimize ative sync if it pops up. Then on your phone open Internet Sharing, connection should be USB, and Network Connection should be whatever your network offers. Then hit connect. Give it a few seconds and your online.
Used this feature several times while on vacation during the holidays. Got about 20kb's down max (Edge)
Thank you for your replies. But I'm pretty sure your solution is not what I want. My ISP has dial-up service that can be convenient when I'm traveling (definitely slow, but good enough). So that is what I want to access. And I do not have any sort of network/data service from my T-Mobile. So I really want to use the connectoid on my laptop that lets me specify the phone number and enter the password on my laptop.
I'm not sure the S730 can act as a dial up modem?
I see what your saying, and as is I do not believe the phone can do it as it comes from the box. You would have to find a way to have your phone while connected to the computer also show up as a modem option for you to use it that way.
If you have the dial up numbers from your ISP why not just get a phone cord and plug it in while your on the road? Most laptops still come with built in modems which is what your after.
There might be some applications out there that allow you to configure a connection to use the phone as a dial up modem, but I honestly havent heard of any (havnt looked either soooo)
You also might try finding wifi hotspots and doing what was already suggested. Then you get DSL through your phone on the computer, or if the computer has a wifi card...
S730 as Modem: Success!
Well, I gave up on my original quest, but found something close enough. All settings on the S730.
First, I set up a Dial-up connection that dials my ISP, and set it to connect to The Internet.
Then I set Connection Sharing to use USB for the PC Connection and the Dial-up connection for the Network Connection. Press Connect, connect the cable, and my laptop is on-line!!
Not needing to add software to my laptop is nice. Typing my password on the cell phone rather than laptop is not so nice. But that is being fussy.
So, thanks for the help. It actually did prod and guide me to a good solution.
Useful when other options are unavailable, pricey, or less convenient.
Hi all,
Does anyone know if its possible to configure the Kaiser as an analog modem so that I can use it to dial-up to my ISP? I tried doing this by creating a new Connection on the Kaiser and selecting "Cellular Line" as my modem connection. However, when I tried using this Connection the Kaiser doesn't seem to be dialing out at all. Actually I'm pretty sure its not dialing out because I changed the phone number in my connections setup to another cell phone and it never rings.
Is there anyway to accomplish what I'm trying to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
umm...no
WModem?
What about this WModem application? From what I can tell, this apps allows your phone to act like a modem. In fact I tried this app and my laptop detected my kaiser as a USB modem. However, when I tried to dial an error dialog pops up on the kaiser telling me to "Please end data call". Funny thing is that I'm not in a data call.
Any other suggestions? Has anyone got WModem working for the Kaiser?
dialup?? yuck!
Its probably a lot better if u use the cell phone data plan over dialup for 3 reasons.
1) its faster
2) a lot more convenient
3) wont use your phone's minutes
How much do you pay for dialup? 10 dollars/mo? and i beleive its around 20 dollars/mo for unlimited data plan for the phone. Just configure the ICS and u will be able to connect to the internet with your phone on your laptop.
@ekw,
Yeah I thought about the data plan.... unfortunately its uber expensive here in Canada. Something to the effect of $15 for 5 megs, with no unlimited data transfer option.
Dial-up is my best bet until they finally decide to roll out an unlimited data plan
Dial-up modem
Any luck in configuring your TyTnII as a dial up modem?
I want to use it instead of a pcmcia-modem...

Hi -- I'm trying to use my ATT Tilt to share internet with my Axim x51v. It _seems_ to be working: I run Internet Sharing on the Tilt ("Bluetooth Pan", "MEdia Net") and connect to its "Network Access Point" via Bluetooth from the x51v.
It seems to connect properly, but the connection is extremely slow: Internet Explorer will sit on "locating" for about 15 seconds for each page I try to load, then load pages at just a few K per minute. This despite my running an HSDPA internet connection on the Tilt. Does anyone have any idea why this would be so slow? Is there a better way to use the 3G-enabled Tilt to get a high-speed internet connection to my x51v?
Thanks!
Alan
your bottle neck is probable the bluetooth. i would suggest you go get WmWifiRouter, i love it and its really fast even on EDGE.

Works great but no encryption and it's a battery hog.
they want me to pay for "tethering"
Up until a month ago, I had the 8525 from at&t. it had internet sharing pre-loaded on it, and the program worked exceptionally well. Unfortunately, my 8525's lcd started whiting out and I ended up getting it warranty replaced with a tilt. to my dismay, I couldn't find the program for internet sharing. after a little digging, I found that the program was still there, but that at&t had hidden it.
Since finding the program, however I have been unable to get it to work.
I connect via usb cable, and I hit connect. The tilt connects to MEdiaNet, but then when I try to open ie on my notebook, I am unable to connect. Then, when I check the connection in the networking and sharing center on the notebook, it tells me that the network I'm currently connected to is local only.
I called At&t for help with this, and they tell me now that there's an additional charge for "tethering" and asked if I would like to upgrade to it.
is there a rom that would allow me to use the internet sharing?
Hi, I've had my Tilt for a while now, and I just updated to the new WM6.1 ROM this morning. However, after the upgrade, I could no longer get the wifi to work. I can connect to the wireless networks (tried different networks both open and secure), but when I try go to a website or use the internet, it just sits there and then says cannot connect. I have tried everything I can think of to fix the problem. I tell it to connect through work and through the internet, and messed with some other setting but that wouldn't do it. I plugged the tilt into activesync and it used the computer's connect just fine. Anyone having or had this issue, or have any suggestions?
Chris
Did you install the remove hidden proxy CAB?
If not, go here and get it:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/6996097/3f1f5d36/cabs.html
It's the removeHiddenProxy4CWS_0522 file
There may be others that do the same thing.
I installed the hidden proxy cab on my tilt, and the wi-fi still isn't working. Any other suggestions on fixing this problem. It's killing me. I though I'd be able to upgrade and reinstall all my files in just over an hour before I ran into this issue.
Update: Okay, I reverted back to the previous WM6 ROM and the wifi worked with absolutely no problem right off the bat. I don't understand what the issue could be and whether anyone else is having the problem. I'm going to try the WM6.1 ROM one more time, and then give up. I have to have wifi because I'm not willing to fork out money for a data plan. Any solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
change the power mode for the wireless mode to 'Best Performance'. This worked for me. Start -> Settings -> Connections -> wireless lan -> Power mode -> Best Performance.
Work Around For Wi-Fi Problem
I have found a work around for this and have tested on my "Tilt" which works 100% for the windows mobile 6.1 rom. On your device go to start, settings, connections then click on the connection icon then manage existing connections. Create on new setting on top of Media Net settings which you will have two connections. Name it Cingular GPRS, Enter Cingular GPRS, then Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G) for your modem, click next access point name wap.cingular, click next then User name [email protected], Password encrypted. The only thing you need to do is when using the internet & text messaging to have settings set on bullet mark Cingular GPRS. When using MMS only check check bullet mark for Medit Net and have proxy settings enabled at all times which will not affect your Wi-Fi connection to browser the internet once you switch back to Cingular GPRS in your settings. https://www.wireless.att.com/suppor...tutorialsCategory=MEdia+Net&tutorialId=614410

Hi, I tried you solution several times, but still could not get the problem fixed. I guess I am just resolved to going back to the WM6 ROM. Thanks for the info though.
@abhijitray: I already tried changing the power settings when I first began having problems, so that's not it.
i have the same problem with my Tilt. But i found that when i connect to my PC with the USB cable, ActiveSync is on, my IE works fine. With Wifi connection, IE is still dead.
maybe an off topic question, but what does the new rom have that the original rom that came with the tilt doesn't? anyone have a link or something, or is it something like better batter performance? thx
i have tilt with the latest official WM6.1 ROM, and have no issues with Wifi.
Ok - here's my story.
I had a default WM 6.0 Official ROM Tilt and upgraded to ATT's 6.1. Immediately my WiFi stopped working. I waited for updates on this thread, and with my temper rising at such a poor release, I decided to go to Dutty's 6.1 Hybrid. Same thing - Wi-Fi didn't work. (To qualify, it would connect and get an IP address, but any attempt to access the net - ping, ftp, Gmaps, Activesync - would fail) I upgraded to the latest eMo radio and still didn't work. I scratched my head and decided to check my router. It's an older D-Link 802.11b and sadly the last firmware was released in 2005. I changed the settings on it to not use Turbo mode and voila, it connected. All happy and such.
But now the problem is slightly different. It will connect once, but after it disconnects (either because I manually turned off WiFi on the phone or the phone entered Standby mode) I cannot connect again. I literally have to reboot my router. This is great a home, but I worry when I have to use a public wifi hotspot. Any thoughts on that?
And yes, I have played around with the power settings.
Kojak
another thing I have noticed on my router is that my Tilt is not sending a hostname along with the DHCP request. Could that be the issue on the WiFi connection? I am wondering if that confuses the router.
Tom
I have the same problem too. tytn II with latest rom. At home with my old linksys which is a 802.11b device. If i disconnect wifi and then try to connect - the phone say - Unavailable. I notice that if i change the channel the phone connect just fine.... very strange
ps. sorry for my bad eng.

I see the same here - I think that by changing the channel it reboots/resets the router and allows you to try again.
ps. don't worry about your english. If this board was in a different language, I am sure that most people here would not even be able to post a thing.

Well, your problem sounds exactly the same as mine (WM6.1 official). Maybe I should have tried a public hotspot, but it just wouldn't work on my home network (I even cut off the encryption and made it open). I downgraded back to WM6 ROM and everything working fine, so I guess no WM6.1 for me.
It is definite a router by router problem. Had problems with the D-Link but I tried it on a Buffalo 802.11g router running Tomato firmware, and I had absolutely no problems. That being said, this could be either a:
802.11b problem?
D-Link problem?
Something must have changed in the WM 6.1 code from WM6.0 as it pertains to WiFi. If only it was as easy as a toggle setting to fix.
For me, it was the opposite. I could get WiFi to work at my office on Mobile 6.0, but I couldn't get my network at home to work. I have a Wireless-N network at home, and even though I set it to B-G only mode, it still wouldn't connect. As soon as I hit WM6.1, everything was fine.
Unfortunately, this happens more than one would think with Wireless network equipment.

Kojak_nyc,
You hit it on the head. It is a router issue, although its not limited to the D-Link router because I have a 2wire HomePortal 1000HW and it also doesn't work. It is also on 802.11b, so that could also be the issue. Something must have changed between in the settings the WM6 and the WM6.1 upgrade. I'll go ahead an inform HTC of the issue (not that they'll do anything).
I believe that the once the tilt is updated to WM6.1, it no longer works on IEEE 802.11b.
I think this is a Dlink issue. I've got a linksys router at home and it connects to that fairly quickly. ssid on that isn't hidden cuz i've got vista machines that have a hard time connecting.
anyway, at work i've got a dlink di624, 802.11g, router and i've not been able to connect the kaiser to it. i think tomorrow i'll do what was suggested and just play around with the channels and find which works. the dlink's set to automatically choose the channel it uses so i'll hard code it for a channel i know the kaiser'll scan for and then see what happens.
if it doesn't work i'll juts keep using the 3g connection... i do have 6GB/mo and haven't come anywhere near using it up.
Experienced similar problem just now. I just upgraded to WM 6.1 and my WiFi connection's been unstable since last night. I have a wireless router with excellent signal on my room and enjoys streaming video before I upgraded to WM 6.1. When I reset the phone it restored WiFi connection again.
Hope you could share some tweaks to resolve this problem.
Thanks.
I have a HTC Kaiser, WM6.1, shifu.20WWE rom an 1.70.19.09 radio. It works well for the local applications. It takes a long time to connect to T-mobile NL, but when it is connected I can be called. But then comes the problem, when I start any application or try to enter the internet the connection is lost with T-mobile. Anyone any idea? Thanks a lot
Have you verified that your settings are correct? You may need to run Connection Setup.
Yes, I also tried several Rom and radioversions. The HTC is autoconfiguring when starting the first time. When I give my pin it connects fine, but when opening any internet application the connection is lost.
An update to my problem. When I don't start any application also the connection is lost in half a minute. you have to register again to the network. It easily connect but the connection is lost in 30 seconds again.
