I didn't get the wizard for the camera, so the fact the flash is really nothing more than a flashlight doesn't bother me. However, it did occur to me that it would be really nice if you could turn that light on/off with a softbutton or from the start menu.
I know, it sounds weird, but I find myself using it as one periodically.
I guess I ought to look around and see what it takes to code for this thing ...
I wanted to use it as a flashlight, but I got more light from the front screen so I never got around to turning on the flash.

bad idea ...the camera flash/led will only last 10 minutes of continuous use then get dim and die. the led is crap. it a known fact .
sorry
A program that would make the screen completely white would work well. I had a similar program on an old Nokia phone I used to have.
if you start the camera and turn the flash on, then hit the power button on top it will put the phone it sleep mode. as soon as you need the light again, hit the power button and it comes right back on. works great when im djing and i forgot my mini flashlight or those batteries died.

This app made the screen white on my Compact to use as a torch, no idea if it works with the Vario as well.

The one koksie posted loads faster, but the advantage with torch is that you can also use it to keep the backlight on, for say when you are playing a game and the backlight keeps going off - i find that so irritating! To do this you need start menu mapped to a hardware button - i use the comm button.
Ah, what a crew! I agree the screen can act as a good light as well, just seemed like I could put the virtually useless LED to use .
I'll give these a try, and thanks!

One day before I went to sleep, I put my wizard to charge and, dont ask me how, accidentally pressed camera button and somehow got the LED on. When i woke up 8 HOURS LATER i found my wizard sitting there with the LED on. It was turned on all night.
2 months later, It still works to date.
Perhaps they had a bad production run of them. Of course, with my luck, that's what I would have gotten!

The LED should have a very long life of about 100 000 hours at normal voltage. It will be excellent if somebody can develop a software to turn on/off the flashlight. I always us it as a torch.

Biolover there are enough stories on the forum of device led's burning out to put one off this idea - do a search and you will see what I mean  The quality seems to vary.
Its not hard to replace the LED though, the wizard can easily be taken apart.

Hello there,
is there any way to disable the charging LED ?
to each his own, but im curious, why? i just got my phone, but i love the charge lights
Very odd request. How will you know your phone is fully charged if you disable the light?
i bet it's just a registry edit, i'll look around and fiddle around with stuff.

You can also see this in the main display, when the charging icon changes to the battery symbol.
I want to follow up with a related question;
Is there any software to tweak how the LED is blinking? In other words, change the direction and speed. I like the spinning motions (recived SMS) better than the up and down (charging) direction.

In that case, you may want to have the phone and a few other lights turned on while you sleep if the night nerves you. That way you'll have some comfort while sleeping.
If I've misunderstood you, and you mean the light bothers you, then I would also suggest not sleeping with the phone resting against your face, with the light flashing in an eye.
Ok by now you know I'm just kidding, so no offense, but couldn't you just put your phone face down on the table, or even on a cloth if you're worried about it scratching?

Try this
My girlfriend has the same "issue" about small blinking lights in the bedroom.
She has a HTC P4350 (Herald) and i installed nueLED for her to disable the charging LED and also the signalling LED.
I don't know if the app works on a TP
I does require .NET CF 3.5

I like the way the phone seems to breathe (with the light) while charging. I think it'd be cool to be able to have it beam different colors. Sigh...remembering that bright, shiney new v600 so long ago...
there 8 leds in it on the front. would be nice to be able to control this somehow. there is probably a separate dll for this. like the led of the camera which is hidden in the cameradriver.
A LED control app would be a awesome gadget. Because nueLED is very limited in functions.
Hello, would it be possible for someone to write or modify _code to allow the four buttons to either stay on longer when activated or even always on when the screen is.
Thanks
Matt
People have been working on that since release to no avail :-(
Hmmm that's really disappointing. Thanks for your fast re
ply.
Np, the best advice I can give you and its what most people have done is just learn where the buttons are in the dark. After a week or so it won't be such a problem I promise
I'm not sure how useful this is, but Sprint told one of the tech blogs (I forget which) in correspendence that on the Epic 4G that the setting that controls the backlighting on the slide out QWERTY will also affect the soft buttons. So maybe once those start making it into our hands we'll find out how it's done and implement it on the other Galaxy S handsets.
i would want them lit for as long as the screen was on, having it on longer wouldnt be good enough.

Apparently the Samsung Epic's button lights stay on for the duration that the screen is on. Once the Epic firmware is released I'm sure the devs will find the files.
i usually just touch any where/move finger on the screen and the buttons just light up

The Samsung guy demoing Media Hub even has trouble hitting one of the soft keys - though it does look like the keys stay lit longer on the Epic.
At about 1:35 he tries a couple times, and then has to tilt the phone to see the button.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-demos-samsungs-galaxy-s-media-hub
Man, I wish this problem was solved. For me, it's the most annoying thing (really the only annoying thing) about this phone. Yeah, by now I've pretty much memorized where the buttons are, but 1 in 5 times I miss-hit one of the bottom buttons because they don't stay lit. If they were lit as long as the screen was lit, I would never miss-hit them.
I haven't seen this posted anywhere so I figured I would post for anyone having a similar issue with their One.
Recently my phones backlight stopped working. It would not work at boot or in the ROM. I tried flashing to stock and tried optimizing the proximity sensor, but no luck. It was clearly a hardware problem.
Not seeing any solution to this issue other than people saying it is the screen or the motherboard I decided to order a new screen.
Well installed the new screen, still no backlight. I was about to give up on it and just buy another phone, but I got the feeling that the light sensor may still be my issue. The backlight on the capacitive buttons would not turn on unless I helded down the power button to force shutdown. This meant the backlights for the buttons at least worked and something else in the phone was preventing them from turning on.
I decided to remove the light sensor from the daughterboard (opposite the power button connector). Booted it back up, and the screen came right on. The phone works great without it, other than auto brightness. The screen still turns off when against face during calls.
So long story short if your LCD and button backlights aren't working don't order an LCD or rule your phone dead right away. Open it up and take out the light sensor, it could be the culprit.
I'm going to order a new sensor and can update with results after installing if anyone is interested. In the meantime I'm using the phone without it, no hiccups so far.

hey
i'm having the same problem are you sure that it is a hardware issue and not the software issue my h/w buttons doesn't light at all and my screen stays black for some time after unlocking the phone it comes back but the brightness is too low
any suggestions would be appriciated
Mine was a hardware issue, the backlight did not turn on at all, even on the htc start screen. The capacitive buttons would only flash when holding down the power button. If ypurs is intermittent and your phone is rooted you cantry insralling an app fhat alows you to change the proximity settings, sorry, cant remember the name of the app i tried. If the app can't detect the sensor it is likely broken like mine was. If that doesnt work try a different rom.
If neither of those help it is likely a hardware issue.
i used the app both light senor and proximity sensor are working fine
any other tips that i can try

Sorry for taking so long to respond, just noticed your reply.
Did you ever get it working? If a different rom did not solve your issue maybe your sensor is just dirty. You could try cleaning it with a can of compressed air. Not sure how effective it would be, but it may help.
Hi @nsodmordex, my HTC One M7 is in the same situation as you describe, no backlight, but working. I'm going to try your suggestion of removing the light sensor, but I'm unable to find it, I'm not sure where the light sensor is.
Please, can you tell me which component is the light sensor? This is a photo of the daughter board:
htt ps://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/ALPJIMWqGsLwul5Y.huge
Thanks!
Found it... it's located behind the daughter board, at the two little holes of the front cover of the phone. I have removed it but no luck, the screen continues black, but the mobile is working good.
it seems a screen related problem, I'm going to try to change the screen and see if it comes to life again.
Drain battery
Hi all,
I also have this problem and found out that if I drain the battery completely and wait about 1 hour, it turns back on when I put the charger in the phone, if the screen doesn't turn on, drain and wait longer, if it does turn back on then power the phone. Do not wait till it has a little bit power because than it fails again and you must drain and wait again.
It works for me and I will make a video of it and post a link later.
Hope it works for you all!
Tip: use a led flashlight to see what's on the display
Ps. Stock m7

Than the lightsensor is broken, are the contacts on the back of the sensor 100% clean, in my case it was dust that created the error.

The display is ok because I can see what is on the phone with the LED flash of a Galaxy S2 so I think that the display is not broken.
The backlight doesn´t turn on with the light sensor and without it either. But i can remember that the last time that it worked the Autobrightness was fine
Edit: I tried rebooting on fastboot and recovery via ADB and the screen is without backlight too

I think the sensor is broken and if you replace it the backlight comes back on (sensor is +- 10€ in holland)

No i dont think thats gonna work, push the power button (whitout charger) every time till the battery is really empty, than wait an hour.
If you connect the charger and the screen will not turn on, wait longer. a night is even better.
If the screens comes on then turn direct the phone on dont let it dim itself or else you can wait again.
This worked in my case but my lightsensor was dirty and after a cleanup it worked normal and it stil works.

Okay, thanks, it worked once, but with the phone turned on and the backlight working, if the screen turns off, the backlight runs away again.
can you repeat point by point what i need to do?
when you say "drain" the battery, you mean leaving the phone on till it turns off? then what should i do? wait an hour and plug the charger to see if it works right? okay, and later if the phone turns on what i need to do?

By 'drain the battery' i mean continuously turning the phone on with a empty battery till it does nothing, not even vibrate.
It must be so empty that the phone not knows its a phone.
And yes if the screen comes on just power it on, thats it.
1 drain
2 wait
3 plug in charger
4 screen comes on
5 turn phone on
6 done
1 drain
2 wait
3 plug in charger
4 screen stays off
5 drain and wait longer
that are the steps that worked for me
Thanks @Dippie83 , it "worked" draining the battery and waiting forma a night to turn it on but when i turn on and i push the power button yo lock the screen, the backlight stops working
Any idea?
This has has happened to me 3 times so far while I am plugged in charging overnight. I'll wake up to see that my screen is on. If I hit the power button it will shut off, and then come back on in a second or two. Even if I flip it upside down so the screen is down, I can still see that the screen is still coming on. The only way for me to fix it is to reboot the phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

I believe Safe Mode is still in Android. Try it. Warning: it will break your home screen widget layout.

The same reason it does in Windows. You use it to narrow down what is causing it. If Safe Mode cures the issue, you know for sure its an installed app. From there, process of elimination.
Right?
Just got the phone and have had this happen a few times also. No apps installed that I didn't have on my previous phone.
After a bit more testing I have more information. It seems like it only happens when it is plugged in and has reached a full charge. Once I unplug the phone from its charger, the screen stops coming on by itself. This is still some kind of bug, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to keep the screen off even if it is fully charged and plugged in.

No, I don't.
Ive tried this for two nights and it doesnt seem like I've had this issue since using a different charger...
My problem turned out to be the button accidentally being pressed and the screen lock setting being set to "5 seconds" after hitting the button, as opposed to right away. So the screen was going off, it wasn't locking, and an errand touch of the side of the phone while moving it would make the screen come back on without seeing the lock screen again because it was within the 5 seconds that the setting enabled. I was not familiar with this setting being on my previous phone and the Turbo was set to this by default. Hope this helps.
I agree that it is a bug, however, I was wondering, is there a way to get rid of that screen entirely? Frankly all that screen does for me is waste the battery, so being able to not have it at all would be great.

I've been looking everywhere and can't find anything to solve it I've even changed to a different ROM CR Droid so I'm not sure what's causing it it may possibly be Hardware but I really doubt it since it was only after an update
i have it to. try KDZ if its same then its a hardware problem. like mine i tried and same for all roms sometimes it turns on inside pocket. very sensitive . sometimes just place my palm in screen and turns on. now it doesnt turn on lol not even tapping 1000 times.
if you have warranty send it to repair. if that is important get another screen.

am afraid its hardware related not software.. i already searched alot and found nothing.
Yeah, I luckily have the insurance, but last time my brother sent his they sent him back a G4 with boot loop issue lmao. So, for right now, I've just been using the power button. As for me, knock to wake, knock code, pull down status bar all doesn't work. Sometimes it will randomly work but tap to sleep works fine.

An app i have been using called KinScreen.
It works by waving your hand over the proximity sensor to turn the screen on. I have been using it a week or so and it doesn't seem to use a lot of battery power. I am using it on LineageOS.

I tried that one also but it wakes up when you put it in your pocket and sometimes you end up pocket dialing people
