T-Mobile MDA Vario to KPN... - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hi,
I have a MDA Vario but want too remove all the sh*t that T-Mobile gives you because I want to use it with KPN network. How can I tweak it to have a full functional device (with GPRS working and stuff). First I have to unlock the SIM with Lokiwiz3? Any other required tweaks needed or adviced? Should i use a ROM update of any kind?
I'm rather new to this device so I appriciate all kinds of help!

To get rid of all the T-Mobile stuff you'll need a ROM update, but if you can put up with thier logo etc, here is the KPN settings

Replacing MDA III rom

Hello, i want to replace the rom with either the qtek or imate rom. How do i go about doing this? I would also like to install the O2 acctive home screen as it is quite useful.
Lastly, how do i unlock the phone to any network?

Wizard BrandedBrowser.exe T-Mobile UK wanted

After changing my Dutch Vario to UK everything is working ok except the today plugin for T-Mobile. It looks as the shortcut for the T-Mobile option (The one that's warning your going online) is just calling the exe BrandedBrowser. After that nothing happens. Modifying the HTCtodayscreen.dll to change the shortcut also doesn't work. So I hope someone can post the original T-Mobile UK BrandedBrowser.exe.
Nico
here ya go tmobile uk brandedbrowser
hi, I also want to change my dutch version vario to english, is everything ok when i change it? thanks
thanks jimmy_boy for the UK BrandedBrowser.exe
I will giveit a try and see if I can change the default homepage from T-Mobile UK into the Dutch T-Mobile startpage.
Upgrading the Vario from Dutch to English was simple, just followed the instructions to CID unlock the device and then start the UK exe file. Toke about 20 minutes. I have the feeling that the English rom is a little bit faster. It now show 1.6.2.4 WWE instead of 1.6.2.2 NLD
Also patched the WLAN to connect at 54Mbps. So, I'm very happy with my Vario.

No probs nicodekker im pleased to help the HTC wizard community as much i can
Missing files
Hi.
I copied the file to my \windows directory and launched the file (in a non-T-mobile ROM) and I get the popup box that I am about to go online. I click OK and the box disappears but nothing happens. Do I also need to install the web'n'walk.cab and/or are there required registry entries?
Yes, I know have a TyTN and 8525 (I do have the T-mobile ROM for that phone but the result is the same). Is there something that is launching that T-mobile US does not recognize?

Appreciate that this is an old thread but in order to use the t-mobile brandedbrowser you need to add (or modify) 2 registry entries:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PIEPlug]
"WebStub"=dword:00000000
"home"="http://www.t-mobile-favourites.co.uk"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PIEBrowser]
"Path"="\Windows\BrandedBrowser.exe"
(change the UK www address to your own countries web address)
Working OK on my HTC Touch Dual.

T-mobile NL: problems with dialing after unlocking & upg

Hello everybody
Yesterday I tried to use "lokiwiz - HTC Wizard Unlocker v0.2b" for my new T-mobile MDA Vario because otherwise I was not able to upgrade the ROM from 1.6.2.2 to the latest one. But.. in the end I got a problem. To be honest this problem was appearing periodically before unlocking/upgrading but now it presents permanently. I simply can not dial any phone number. The systems responds as: "SIM card is not installed or invalid" (something like that from translation from Dutch into English, originally: "SIM-kaart ontbreekt of ongeldig").
I already tried to use this SIM in my previous phone (SE T630) and it still works perfectly. I can dial numbers, I can SMS, whatever. But in my new T-mobile MDA Vario this SIM card just does not admit dialing the phone numbers.
Does anybody have any thoughts, what it might be?
Thank you very much in advance!!!
P.S. Honestly, in case of warranty during unlocking process I kept my SIM card out off the MDA.
Just for info...
When I bought MDA the version of ROM was 1.6.2.2 NLD
After upgrading I got ROM 2.21.2.5 NLD and ExtROM 2.21.2.108
As I see now it connected to T-mobile network but still can't dial any number, reporting of the possible problems with SIM card. In the same time this SIM card is working with no any problems in my T630.
This is a very strange problem indeed. When you turn your device on or soft reset, does the device ask for a PIN code for the phone? If it asks for a PIN code and it accepts that code and starts searching for a signal, that means that the device can read the SIM card. It is very strange that when you have a signal, the device cannot make call. Either it should not be able to compare your PIN code to the one on your SIM and give an error message, or if it accepts your PIN code, you should be able to make calls. Perhaps there is a hardware problem with your SIM slot that makes the device unable to read the info on your card? Since it works in your other phone, the SIM does not seem to be the problem. You can try flashing another ROM on it to test if the device works with that ROM. If that does not work as well, flash back to an original T-Mobile NL ROM and call T-Mobile for your warranty.
When it is loaded it shows up the Telefoon screen with the following message: "Ongeldige of ontbrekende SIM-kaart. U kunt nog wel alarmnummers bellen, als uw seviceprovider dit ondersteunt." If I type numbers it show stars, like I would enter the password. Why stars? I already tried to input my unlocking code but it didn't help, as looks like it expects something else that this. I may just press Annuleren and continue working with other available functions of MDA but still may not use the phone.
Could you please share the info how to downgrade back to 1.6 ROM?
Thank you very much for your response!
Ok, this indicates that your device cannot read your SIM card. The screen you get on start-up is the screen where you normally enter your PIN code, if the device can read your SIM Card. That is why you see only stars when you enter a number there. Seems to me that your device cannot read your SIM Card and therefore cannot compare the PIN you enter to the one on your SIM card. You should not be able to get a signal from T-Mobile, since your phone cannot read the SIM and cannot register with the network. This can be caused by three problems: either your SIM card slot is broken, or your ROM is faulty (try flashing it to another ROm first, for instance a Qtek ROM from the ftp server, there are many ROMs available there) or the SIM card is defective ( seems not to be the case here, since it still works in your other phone).
I recommend that you first try another ROM on your phone, e.g. a Qtek ROM. If the problem goes away then, just keep the Qtek ROM or try flashing the T-Mobile ROM again. If that does not help, flash the latest T-Mobile ROM (from their website) to your device and claim your warranty for a broken sim slot.
As far as I know it is not possible to downgrade to the 1.6 ROM, it is a non-AKU ROM and cannot override an AKU ROM. Perhaps someone can correct me, since I am not a 100% sure of this. You do not need the 1.6 ROM at all, if the Qtek ROM does not work, just flash the latest T-Mobile ROM to your device and claim warranty. Since you then have an official T-Mobile ROM on your device, warranty should not be a problem.
Would be that a problem to flash latest T-mobile upgrade back from Qtek? I need to know it just in case I would not be able to do that. Cause otherwise, sorry, but im ****ed up in front of warranty office..
It should not be a problem to flash the T-Mobile ROM over a Qtek ROM. You can first try a hard-reset to see if that solves your problem. You can also call T-Mobile Klantenservice and tell them your problem. Tell them you want to use a Qtek ROm to figure out the problem and ask them permission to do so. They are known to give permission for such actions if that can save them from repairing your device. Be sure they make a note in your file stating that they give you permission, that makes your case stronger if there is a problem with your warranty later on. Good luck!
Do you think it's illegal installing even T-mobile NL ROM updates by myself, i.e. not asking T-mobile to do so?
Like I said the previous version of my ROM was 1.6.2.2. Then I actually tried to flash the latest UK version (2.21.2.5). The network signal was actually appearing from time-to-time but then it just died. Then I tried to install the latest NL version (2.21.2.5NLD) to check whether the signal would appear. But it didn't help.
Installing official T-Mobile updates is not illegal. T-Mobile NL made the upgrade available on their site. These updates are meant to be carried out by the users themselves, therefore the file and instructions are placed on their site. For other brands ( Nokia, SE) these updates cannot be done by the users themselves, but Windows Mobile updates are meant to be done by you, thereby saving T-Mobile the costs of performing the upgrades for you. So if an official T-Mobile ROM is on your device, they can never deny you your warranty. You can try to replace the radio Rom only (there is a thread on this) to see if that helps, but I recommend flashing an official T-Mobile NL ROM on your device and claim your warranty. Since you have tried different ROMs, the problem obviously resides in the hardware. If a hard-reset does not help, use the lokiwiz application to sim and cid lock your device again and T-Mobile will not be able to see that you had unlocked it. Just mention that you tried a hard reset and that you tried upgrading to the latest official T-Mobile ROM and they will have to honour your warranty.
Re: T-mobile NL: problems with dialing after unlocking &
First of all to my knowledge T-Mobile MDA Vario in NL is SIMlocked and CID locked . If you want to know the difference I advise you to search in the xda-forum or google it.
Here are a few comments from my experience of upgrading and unlocking my MDA Vario.
( BTW I have T-Mobile MDA Vario initially with 1.6 ROM and SIM& CID lock -first upgraded to 2.21.2.5 then unlocked with lokiwizard3a !! )

I disagree with this, upgrading should not require you to unlock your device unless you upgrade to a None-T-Mobile ROM. If this was your main target ( only the Tmobile upgrade ) you shoudn;t have messed with the unlock stuff

I am a bit puzzled you state that the device was not behaving well before you started tweaking. Why did you not go to the Tmobile shop? OK you like the challenge ? Anyway it does look like a Hardware issue to start with.

OK what have you tried else?
The suggestion of trying a QTEK ROM shold be blocked by your CID lock. I you remove the CID lock ( which is possible but not legal ) your warranty is at risk. Tmobile may claim you messed up your device ...
Therefor What I did is only take the SIM lock out. Lokiwizard 2(a/b) did not work for my upgraded MDA so I looked around a bit and found that there is a newer version 3a. That one worked for me on the Tmobile 2.21.2.5 ROM. I did not use or try the QTEK rom since the Tmobile rom allows my warranty to be safe and is newer ( and stable afaik) then the QTEK rom .
I also have found there are updater that do not check your version number of NBF file because you officially can not downgrade the 2.21.2.5 so there is a way back should you need to. Though I personally did not verify this . I mailed with a person here at XDA forum who did it with success.
I would propose to play dummy when approaching Tmobile and not ask to go to QTEK rom and tryin to be the smartass.
Try to downgrade and go for warranty - thats what I would do..

Total Novice Guide Please on Unlock/ROM

There many answers to my questions in the forums, but I need to understand a bit better, hence the special topic.
I am thinkin of getting an MDA Vario with Co-Pilot software, this would be on T-Mobile Network. (actaully an upgrade by a family member for me).
I am on Vodafone myself, so I would need to unlock it, what the difference between SIM lock and CID unlock ? Which do I need to do ?
Then I would want to get rid of all the T-mobile branding, am I right in thinking that would be via a ROM upgrade to a unbranded ROM ? Which is the most favoured ROM people go for ? Whats usually the differences between these branded and unbranded ROM's ?
Stupid question, but th Co-Piliot Software would not get effected my any of these updates would it ? Or does it come on a CD, so I just need to re-install it after all the updated ?
Thats alot of big questions I know, so now you know how confused my head is, any explanantion would be fantastic and help me understand what I would need to do.
Thanks a bunch.
So after more reading I got some answers.
SIM Lock - The lock put on by your mobile supplier, which prevents you using another carriers SIM card. Usually done as your getting the phone at a fraction of the actual cost.
CID Lock - The lock on the phone which prevents ROM updates, I believe it prevents other ROMS, so you can use the current suppliers update ROMS, but will not allow you to put a ROM of another supplier.
ROM's - So there ROM provided by mobile carrier's, for UK I found there is ones from O2, T-Mobile and Qtek, I still do not know what the differences are other then the branding.
I am on Vodafone and by chance found a ROM for Vodafone :-
http://s131209249.online.de/vodafone_software/9100.htm
So I am thinking maybe this would be the best option for me.
I still would like to hear opinons on ROM's, please PLEASE helppppppp.
I assume I CID unlock my T-mobile UK and then I can apply any ROM including the above Vodafone one.
Got my vario today locked to T-mobile UK. And it was a G4 chip.
IPP/SPL - 2.21.0001
OS - 2.24.2.6
I had no t-mobile SIM so stuck my vodafone SIM in, first asks for my personal SIM password, then it asks for unlock code.
At this point I ran lokiwiz03a, which ran but never gave me unlock code, mentioned something about not being able to copy some file and it might be in use.
So I copied EnableRapi.cab to my phone and ran EnableRapi.cab from File Explorer, that went fine (message about overwrite, said yes)
Then I ran LockiwizMsl.bat from desktop while being connected to ActiveSync and there it was the unlock code.
Entered worked fine.
As regards the ROM upgrade, my main reason was to lose all t-mobile crap, but found an easier way with ZERO risk:
First time ever you startup phone it does inital setup, the last step it beings to do an install, as soon as the install starts pull the battery out, then reboot. (Important to have the battery cover off already)
On reboot you should be able to go into the phone no setup screens this time, also ZERO customizations, yes means you need to do all the GPRS, MMS etc etc setting yourself, but that I am happy to do.
Hope this helps someone.

Noob question

I have just bought an O2 XDA IIS from ebay. Can i load an Orange rom into it as I plan to unlock it and use it on my Orange contract. Also, is there a WM6 Orange rom that can be loaded? any help would be warmly welcomed.
Cheers
no need for orange rom, cuz when unlocking, you remove the simlock from the phone...the rom is not bound to the operator...hungarian operator rom doesn't even exist, altough i use hungarian op sim...
and for IIS there is no wm6 rom...
Cool, so if i do the unlock, will it remove any references to O2 from Os?
well...not exactly...
so imagine, that you have a phone and an operating system...the phone means here the gsm antenna, adapter and driver, and the simcard, that identifies you to the operator...now U unlock the phone...this will remove the simlock, phone will accept any simcards...but the procedure won't touch the OS...(operator has no key in the registry structure)...if o2 installed any programs on the IIS they can be removed, even if you use o2 sim, or orange...but if you connect to another network, it won't recognize, that device was locked to O2 before...
Cool thanks, one more question. Is there a rom that you would recommend that is nice and basic so if O2 has put some branding into it i can start fresh?
Thanks for all your help.
well, you should now, that changing roms void warranty...if in this case you think of a new rom, i would recommend wm5...helmi modified by baniaczek and xplode's roms are the most stable and newest yet...
thanks
thanks! very much
