hi everyone! I just want you all to know that bricked wizards can be fixed. How?
Technical Part
the bootloader is stocked on a memory on the wizard, however, if we messed it in anyway the PDA won't turn on anymore, but the thing we all forget: IT'S STILL A MEMORY!
so we still can access it without the PDA running.
HOW?
i've been reeding thousands of pages,i found many pictures and many tutorials how to access ANY memory and ANY PDA, didn't got a final solution for the WIZARD (till now) but i'm still looking and i found many many pda's tutorials.
the whole idea is creating a (HOMEMADE JTAG) that makes a connection between the PC's LPT Port and the memory of the bricked device, many cables are shown on the internet and tested. there is a simple design to complex design.
The signals on the JTAG connector (dual row)
I will show you some images and links so you can keep looking with me to find together a solution...
this is an example for IPAQ 3600
http://openwince.sourceforge.net/jtag/iPAQ-3600/
looks promising hun?
today i will check if the TP1 and other points are LABELED on the WIZARD just like the COMPAQ In the pictures
if so then we got the absolute solution
if not i will keep looking and i will put the solution in details as soon as i discover it.
all i need is some people to help me looking and testing with me. i would say be aware and don't do this.. but if you don't you'll still having a dead and bricked phone. you have to revive it (at your own responsibility).
i don't think it's very hard to do.... just little attention and we'll do it
the good story is: if you did this once you can keep the cable, so whenever you mess with it again you just (INSTALL) your bootloader like installing a game
SUCCEED for ONCE and you have a VAMPIRIC WIZARD that doesn't die TILL you hit it's screen
check what that person has done to it's PDA for direct access whenever he wants:
http://www.gert-menke.de/jtag-howto/
hehe cool hen? just like a Floppy Disk
The Type of cables you can make:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Customizing/Hardware/JTAG_Cable
http://jtag-arm9.sourceforge.net/hardware.html
there's many other PDAs Fixed in This way:
http://repair4pda.org/handheld_jtag.html
i think we have a big chance that the connectors points on all board are the same (positions) or at least labeled.
please do not try anything until we tell you to do so.
there's more info we have to gather together before proceeding.
and watch out the homemade JTAG has to be les than 15cm long to avoid noise...
please be active with me and i promise a solution for the wizard as a start and later may help all other PDAs
ARE YOU WITH ME?
have fun!
Sincerly
Ralph Ghawi
does this mean there is currently no fix for devices that don't boot?
Wrong
For the moment there IS a fix for the devices that don't boot, but the procedures are not available for all the models. example the IPAQ 3600 for example, has it's full procedures. in fact the procedures are easy.
let me explain:
-the DIY (do it yourself JTAG) is easy to make
-soldering 5 little cables out of the device is hell easy to make
-downloading the program to make the connection is available (i downloaded many, i just have to test them.
-getting the bootloader on a file is also easy as it read .bin (just like the memory card image) recommended use 128MB card coz i think the image fits all the 128MB memory.
there is (probably 5 cables to be soldered on the device)
TDO TDI TMS TCK GND
if we can know where these (test points) are, we can solder the 5 cables to them, and then proceed with the rest. the rest is a piece of cake, if you want to help, start googling the following words with modifications if you're good at searching and good with tips and ideas.
words: TDO TDI TMD TCK GND Test Points JTAG....
and please if you get any progress or new words post here so we can search together. we can revive together hundreds of broken devices. when we succeed i'll put all utilities and images we found on a ZIP file, put the names of people that helped, and share it. We all love our PPCs
cheers
Good News
as i was reading i remembered a picture i saw while searching...
the picture is here http://www.gert-menke.de/jtag-howto/connector-pinout.png this 50 pin connector has all the 5 (Test Points) we're looking for:
pins: 41 = TDI ; 42 = TCK ; 43 = TMS ; 44 = TDO ; 50 = GND
now i'm gonna get my tools and open the WIZARD, if I found the 50 pin connector, then our problem is solved in less than a week. i'll report again to you in 20 minutes.
have fun and please let me see some active pple.
i need a little help in here.
Re: Good News
Might the service manual help you?
Downloading, i'll check it. thank you for your help
i promise a solution
Maybe this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51955 can help. A user claims he knows a person who knows the Jtag connectors position on a prophet matherboard.
Bye
thank you risidoro, i requested the test points. hope we get an answer.
so do you have a dead phone?

No, no! My phone is (still) alive n kickin'!!!
I really hope a solution to dead DOCs is found, too many bricks in this forum (you could build a cathedral!!!
Bye and thanks for the efforts!!! Keep on!!!
that's all? no body's interested?
no no! i'm definately interested. My reasoning in life has been to be a hands on person. If yoru paying $800 for a device, take it to the max! it really bothers me when someone gets a powerful device, or car, or a nice watch... even hat, and is afraid to do anyting to it. I have a friend that got a wizard after he saw how "cool" mine was, and he's afraid to install anything on it so he doesn't "damage' it. *****!
I'm all in on this, my wizard works fine but i have a spare mainboard that has no bootloader on it. My previous question.. "is there no fix for this" is that other than soldering wires onto the board there is no solution... obviously i just answered my own question cuz why else would people be looking into this?
If it takes snapping the main board in 4 pieces and flushing it down the toilet and than fishing it out of my septic tank.. I'll do it
If you guys need pics of a nude main board i'll take em for you, but theres no writing on the sucker so i don't know where the ground, tdi, tck, tms, tdo things are at... i think we're gonna have to break into the manufactures office in thailand... or is it taiwan?
Everything is ready i just need to know where are the test points. fone_fanatic can you take a picture for the board you have? (Side where the CPU and the Flash .... G3), i can't keep disassembling and assembling it thank you...
it seems you are the only one interested..
btw if this extra board worked i will give you some other links how to make a robot and make this board it's head and command center... dunno if you love such experiments..
Help Me Finding Test Points
Anybody interested?
I noticed on the service manual that there is a diagnostics tool on an SD card. Does anybody have a copy of that or get hold of it.
mm
in this case the sd card can't help you...
there's only the JTAG
please if anyone knows the location of the test points please let us know...
we're still waiting to proceed.
thank you

too bad the photo's don't show a wizard.
In order to find the corrosponding testpins for a wizard I would need a mainboard from a (dead) wizard.
I also would need the datasheet from the chip containing the ROM.
Then I could remove (de-ball) the package with my smd rework-station (sort of "heatgun") and follow the leads from the chip and try to find the corrosponding testpins.
The difficulty lies in the fact that the package has to be removed without tearing or burning the routing from the pcb, and the fact that the pcb is a multilayer board thus making straight tracing nearly impossible.
Only solution for that is attaching test leads to the place were the TDO TDI TCK TMS are according to the datasheets, and then testing one by one which testpoint corresponds to each lead.
I would gladly volunteer in finding those testpoints on a wizard, but since my wizard is still working I don't feel much for dissassembling mine and removing chips from a perfectly working wizard..
However, if anyone has a dead mainboard, and would like to donate it to me so I can do my destructive reverse engineering on it, I would gladly try and find those testpoint out for you guys (and gals).
hehe
hehe offcourse these aren't the wizard test points.otherwise we wouldn't have bricks anymore. i would publish the reviving method as soon as i get any info about test points the rest is easy.
do you know why i'm researching this?
coz ounce we did it, we can try anything on our devices, it will never die again. we all can buy any wizard with broken screen but there's always a chance to kill it :s
my UPS sometimes halts and restarts the computer. if i was in the middle of ROM update the device will die again... another 180$? no thank you
new rom? we can be the 1st to try it! we're never afraid again.
wrong version? device killed. restoring the bootloader takes around 30 minutes maximum and the device is up again
any progress?
I am such interested.. !! But I am not unfortunately good at thees works
I wish luck and Hope my device will wak up again
ok don't worry we'll be working on it and we'll make it very easy (step by step). but first let us find the procedures
take care

I propose banning people who post threads like these. Are you serious? Dude, if you don't know how to mod your phone perhaps you should read through the forum and figure it out, and if you have a specific question, then feel free to ask it. Don't just say I don't know how to do it. You obviously are too lazy to figure it out by doing some basic reading.
i searched but i dont know where will i start
Let me guess, you searched one time and gave up? Well, I did one search too: I searched the word "iphone" in thread titles and displayed the results with the most views first: TA DA!!!
First link - "iphone App for WM - LookALike"
EDIT: Link was dead, updated it.

We all have a right to opinions even if we disagree. Banning for this sort of thing is silly.
However, I agree they need to do homework and figure out what path they really would like to take before the step off the curb. This one is stepping right into an oncomming bus.

Welcome to XDA-Dev
Just for guidance:
1
Given you are fairly new to this sort of thing, you will be better served if you post in the Kaiser Forum. (Not Kaiser Upgrading which is largely about ROM Flashing and the more advanced development stuff.)
2
Marm0lade above has given you a page of links (See link in his post) I hope you see how easy it was for him to search and get that page of iphone threads.
3.
Soon we are going to have a new Forum for Members who are Beginners, this will be a good place to post this kind of question.
I am going to move this thread to the regular Kaiser forum.
I may also close the thread in the next day or so, because the answers are there if you care to hunt around. However, if anyone wants to give you helpful, constructive advice about how to go about finding suitable information they can do so in the next few hours.

for somewhat the same menu interface or some other shell than wm has to offer you can use spb shell 2 (google xda for it)
it gives a nice cube/touch interface wich can be customized also there are alot of programs out there that enhance your phone like camera album, long endkey, big startmeu,s2u2,fff,touch commander and many more i suggest start reading the forum and use the wiki/google search this forum for answers good luck...

Well, if you must know I have been using that user name, (and variations thereof) all over the internet for almost 20 years now. I used to drive an ambulance before I opened my own business. That's where it came from. Still, there is a lot to be learned from reading the stickies & the Wiki. I've seen the following link posted many times, and I feel its far more blunt than what I linked to... http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php At least I showed you that there is hope by reading the information available. Trust me, it could have been much worse. You can easily get flamed here if you ask without reading the Wiki first.

Hey folks! Been lurking for a while and thought it was about time I posted something useful, so I looked around and didn't see anything similar and thought a "recommend me a ROM" thread would be a nice idea.
To start:
Basically I have an MDA Vario III with Rom version 1.56.220.4and Radio version 1.27.12.11 still locked to T mobile. I use my vario for calls regularly, texts even more and quick alot of the Web and walk service (I live in the UK).
I love the look of the HTC interface (with the big digital numbers and easy tabs) and am mostly looking for something a bit snappier that has some inventive features ( like being able to use 8Gig memory cards) built in.
can anyone recommend me a ROM (official or non) that would suit me?
Feel free to ask for recommendations of your own!

Not to make you feel bad, but, what you posted is something redundant and has been discussed many times in the ROM section.
This is another thread that should not exist. If you had searched, you would have seen lots of closed threads about this very topic. ROMs are very subjective, and so is Radio version. You are just going to test every single one that looks interesting to you.

When it comes to your answer, "You are just going to test every single one that looks interesting to you." Isn't that a little bit harsh? You should remember that not all the users here have all the time in the world to try out every ROM that comes around, people have lifes.

I don't think that I hold myself out as "holier than thou". That being said, look at the URL for this website; xda-developers.com. If you are not willing to do any work yourself, and just want everything handed to you, then you need to leave.
I am by no means a developer, but I do my research before creating stupid/unnecessary threads. Go ahead, look at the threads I started... 7 over 21 months.
theres really nothing wrong with noob questions...we all had them...but if they've been asked over n over again...or people dont search the answers first...thats the problem..how hard is it to search before posting..maybe they have...but if u did deep n not post after searching and lookin at the titles of the first page...i'm sure all these threads wont exist

round here we use something called search. It is up at the top right hand corner you see. If you were to use that thing and type in what you're looking for you would find what you are looking for.

Really glad that search has finally made it to your neck of the woods. Now all you have to do is learn to use it effectively. The link you gave returns 10 results none of which answers the question.
One of these days courtesy will make to "over there" too.
Actually that search returned 896 (only 10 on each page though), but anyway I think this is the best place to start looking.....

How many times does it need to be said that this is a "developer site" (don't believe me, have a look at the URL), not a "spoon feed site"? If you are not willing to spend 5 - 10 minutes searching prior to creating another thread for a topic that has been covered here several times, then you deserve to be ridiculed.
What makes the OP even more ridiculous is that it's not just asking a simple question like "Can the Kaiser run Linux?" Instead, they add "Details/links", which indicates they expect someone else to go and do all of the work for them.
And by the way, courtesy is a 3-way street and it takes 2 to use the carpool lane.
Thank you NotaTreoFan
and I would think this link covers it, which is one of the top returns in what I posted before.

I'm sorry that I'm not willing to dig through all those links for your research. Now when someone comes in and actually uses search to find out if there is Linux on the Kaiser, they will have to dig through your redundant threat. So you just added to the mess. Thanks.
Lastly, you come to this site, which is rich and full of information. The admins and mods spend lots of time making it so that all the information is available to you, they post street signs and try to keep it all simple enough to use. All this is done to make your life and our lives easier, but you can't use all these things implimented for you as a courtesy. Imagine if there was no search?
None of those actually answer the question and show you how to put an actual Linux distro on your phone. Sure you can put Android, but it's unusable. I've actually seen videos of people putting Linux on their Dell Axim, but the Kaiser would be different, since you need phone support.
No it doesn't say, "linux doesn't work on the phone" but quotes like
Realistically... I see the following happening: Sometime in the next 6 months someone gets linux to boot on this phone (to the effect that it can be used as a mini-workstation). Within the next year someone gets an actual kernel that give us phone functionality and base drivers so we can actually run a linux phone and get "basic" functionality. Over the next year (so year two now) this continues to get developed. Maybe at the end of year two we have a pretty nice functioning linux-based phone.

As of yet, Linux won't run on it, and the chances are not ery good that it will run Linux in the near future, because Qualcomm, who makes the processor/system on a chip that runs the PDA has not released the detailed specs for it. Ifyou want to run Linux on a PDA I suggest buying an old iPAQ, or even one of those Sharp Zauruses (Zauri?) that already come with Linux by default.

The short answer is "no". Right now it's impossible, mainly because there is no CPU

This should answer your flash lite question:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/
Next, Kaiser does not have a tuner therefore you cannot use a radio with it. Unless you have an am/fm radio on a bluetooth headset or another headset.
third, a radio is what gives your phone reception (to make it short)
finally, if you don't know what drivers are, why are you here?

I think he ment to imply that the fella is in over his head. If he doesn't understand the lowest of basic info then he probley shouldn't be in a place that caters to the high end.
That being said.
Flash light is something that is used for running programs or things inserted into web pages. You Mr. SuperNoob shouldn't worry about it.
Next
A driver is a like a language interpreter. It translates what windows says into the language a device speaks. Like if windows wanted to show something on the screen, the video driver hears what windows wants and then tells it to the screen in the language it speaks.
If you can't understand anything I've written, then I would suggest doing nothing with your phone and maybe taking it back for something easier.
At your Windows Mobile device the thing is like on your desktop PC.
There is a registry,
a BIOS/Bootloader
drivers for the Hardware
and so on...
If you are not sure in thoose things, experiment more with your desktop pc first cause in the most cases the hardest case is that you have to reinstall your windows.
But on you mobile device it's not so hard to totaly brick it.
When you are more experienced in thoose basic things, then you can try to play with the more advanced features of your device.
Just a tip

pretty immature to post those kinds of picture n so what if it has DEVELOPERS in the name. and ur trying implement that this is a developers community then why is there a forum for accesories when they r things to be bought. or threads posting to sell stuff. or ppl asking for help. never hurts to ask questions about stuff that is not known and reading stuff that doesnt make sense is pointless whem trying to seek out the basics.
hate to say it, but xda-dev is for more indepth info on the phones we use. at&t's support forum is more basic then 80% of what's in these forums. The guy seems new to the boards and made the mistake of posting things that have been covered, it happens. The picture posts were funny, don't know what was immature... I'd say just drop it, and keep searching google...

but its better to ask advance ppl who know what they are talking about and build from their answers. and i like xda becuz i got quite a handful of programs plus useful information on doing SOME things.
and i do search google a lot but sumtimes i look for stuff , get results, and dont understand so i just have to ask =\
and also another question. what is the send button? like when i had to hard reset my 8525 and i held the two soft keys and the soft reset button at the same time.. then it does all this stuff then ask my to push the send key.... so i thought that the send key is the button i press to send text msgs so i pushed that button... but nothing happens. so i think its broken so i had to buy the tilt....
JK but it was pretty funnny becuz i actually read the story . a guy didnt even know that the send key was the green button and bought a new phone becuz he thought his phone was broken but later found out what it was after ppl called him stupid n dumb .

ROTFL i saw that post............ there is always someone less knowing than you. Dont take too much of what some of these guys say to heart. Searching, reading, and not understanding is understandable.... and its cool that you want to learn, but ill say this....... Would you try to build a chronohexometer without first knowing what a nanosintomicrom does? Or what about the microstrenico that powers the flux capaciter?
Ok so that last part was a bit of rubbish..... but what it means is.... at least research the basic terms ( drivers, radio firmware, ect . . . . . . ) before asking silly things ....thats what gets you into trouble here
Start here

Brian, a little friendly advice here...
You have seriously become what is known as a "Serial Threader". Follow the links in my Signature, read them and understand them. Then come back and be a good forum citizen.
First, you need to post in the proper subforum. Questions about flashing DO NOT belong in the General subforum, they belong in the upgrading subforum.
Next, you need to post your questions in the correct threads (i.e. for the Rom you are using or in a thread that asks the same thing).
Then only time you should create a NEW thread is when there are no existing threads where your question fits. None of your threads fits this requirement.
Finally, be patient. Nobody at XDA-Devs is paid for their time, yes even the Moderation Team is entirely volunteer.
Take to heart the fact that XDA-Devs is just as much about the journey as it is the destination. If you don't care for the how but only want the bling then this is not the right place for you.
Thanks,
Alright, before some people get started, I have read the noob's sticky and have done the HardSPL and such. I am just having SO MANY problem's with everything (just the AT&T Tilt, I need to get rid of the AT&T crap) so I just want to know what ROM people would recomend for person who doens't need crazy special program's. All I use is the internet and text msging and some GPS. What is the fastest ROM with pretty much the most basic program's on it?
I had the AT&T Rom which I unlocked by getting the unlock code and then I did the hard reset and configured the phone and then a soft reset before the AT&T crap got loaded onto my phone but now I can't set up the internet???? (I think's it's because I don't have the AT&T program to turn off the proxy?)
I know you guy's get a lot of these question's that seem stupid but I am new to the Kaiser so help would be very much appreciatted.
1. Wrong forum.
2. Everybody has their own taste.
3. Test them all out and see which you like best.
4. Thread's going to probably get closed.
haha search? it's all good just search a lot before posting personally i spend atleast two days searching threads and trying things before i post up my problem.
You should start trying the last Official Rom, look for them in the wiki
Good Luck!

Well, I don't think this is the wrong forum to ask - it has nothing to do with ROM DEVELOPMENT, it is just a general question!
I too would say: try the latest offical HTC ROM - it has no user customization / user preferred application integrated and is almost clean. In addition, it has everything to get you started, from AUTO NETWORK / INTERNET CONFIGURATION to STREAMING MEDIA PLAYER.

I think it is hilarious how people just LOVE to get on other's ass's about simple question's. I am asking for people OPINION'S!!!!!!!!! If you don't feel like giving one well hell, THEN DON'T!!!!!! Well thank's to the one person to recomended the HTC ROM. I appreciatte 1 decent person.

You know, it's not even that, but when you get ongoing threads about the same idea, it gets extremely annoying.
The ROM i like wont necessarily be the ROM that you like; it's a matter of taste and content.
Anyhow, to answer your question, i'm on my own Kareem's RevROM v4.44.
I understand what your saying 100%, the only thing is what do I search? Like I went to the "built in forum search" and when I type in what I am looking for (under Kaiser obviously) I get like 100 thread's that each have 100 page's? I am not trying to be that lazy guy that want's everything done, I am just that new guy that want's to learn how to make a good phone freaking awesome.
Thank's for the help, I'll give that ROM a shot.
Also this will clear 100% everything off of my phone and just let me start new correct?????
I want to get this internet going since I am paying for 6GB's a month haha.
For me some of the best Kaiser Roms are ROMeOS 4.6 (no manilla) and Solace 1.5 or 2.0 Beta (manilla 2D).
Unfortunately both Chefs have moved on from cooking Kaiser roms, so those are probably the last versions of each.
Anyway, those Roms are fast, and use the minimalistic mentality. They do not come with anything extra, however there are extra applications in the extended ROM if you want to install them.

That is exactly the point. The reason you get 100 different threads when you search is because of threads like this one. Now the next guy will get 101 different threads.
This place is a great database of knowledge, but these threads don't add anything to that. Nothing new will be learned in this thread - no new problem solved. Threads like this just make the informative posts and knowledge gaining threads less likely to be found.
People aren't getting on you because they don't want to help or they just want to yell, it's because they see the big picture. They see that in trying to help yourself, you are hurting everyone else.
My Tilt is the first phone I've ever had that could do more than call someone, yet using only information that I've gleaned from this site, I've been able to unlock my phone, flash dozens of different ROMs, flash dozens of different radios, write my own scripts, and develop my own small apps to accomplish what I wanted to do. The key part here is that I did all of this without starting a single thread. I'm sure there are hundreds of others who can say the same thing....and it's probably why they seem annoyed. They know it's possible to find the information because they've done it....but they also know that it's now becoming increasingly more difficult to find it again.
If you don't know what to search for, just start browsing the ROM development forum and look for the threads that are the hottest and that have the most posts. That will tell you which ROMs people are using. Find a handful of them and read the details. See which ones look the cleanest and don't have the apps that you don't want (or have the ones that you do).....and then try a few. Kareem's right - my answer is going to be different than his or anybody else's. There will be just as many answers as there are ROMs, so looking through the ROMs themselves seems like the obvious way to get the information you seek.
You can be a great contributor to this place by taking the time to find the information that is already present, and in doing so, making it easier for the next user to do the same.
As noted in the link below, all "best roms" threads will be closed/deleted. I am going to close this one and then will delete it later.
