Tom Tom Navigator 3

Hello all I have an xdaIIs and I can not get it to work with the tom tom navigator 3 I have tried all I can it will not pick up the gps at all is there a fix for this any where it is blue tooth

I have an imate pda2k...but have you checked witch port the GPSis trying to open when connect?? If you try the BT gps will fail...need to be serial port on bt.(ysually 5 or 6).Another thing...have you paried the devices? Add a new device, click to discover services on it (GPS outpout in this case), type the key and connect from the shortcut yuo have created.Works for me, hope the same for you, byez!

The device is paired fine but I have not tried the ports so I will give that a go thanks

Also, uncheck 'Receive all incoming beams' in Start/settings/connection/beam.

Jason, when you bonded the gps it should have given a message regarding serial port profile, accept this then choose tomtom wireless gps in gps settings and in the bottom box choose bluetooth gps, failing that choose com 5.

Hi, i am having the same problems trying to get the two to work together, it used to work fine with my Xda2, but i cannot get it to work with the Xda2s.
the way you pair devices is different!!
On the TomTom GPS how do you get it to be ready to accept a connection for bonding?

Try the following under the GPS section (2nd page where the world map is).
Top dropdown = NMEA 0183 v2 Bluetooth
Bottom dropdown = Blue tooth Serial Port COM6
Make sure the box is "ticked"
Also, switch on Bluetooth, go into bluetooth setting,select service, highlight serial port and make sure there is a tick in the Enable service box.

when you use a bt reciever, just download de update 3.07 at www.tomtom.com
if you use wired , make sure you uncheck the infrared (beam)

right o im getting a new gps unit one off ebay I took the other one back as O2 have withdrawn tom tom 3 from being sold together they say its incompatible and wont work well I found all the kit at a fraction of the price of O2s so im going to try that if it does not work I will use my old xdaII.
also the guy at O2 stated we cant even open the kit to try and figure it out ourslelves
what are O2 thinking ????????????????
they just need to sort the rom out so it will can it be that hard

gps signal

help i have a xda 11i which has Tom tom fitted onto it but it will not find the gps signal. It is a new bluetooth device but how can i test to find out what the problem is ??
I am not too knowledgable in computers so keep explination simple please

Make sure that you have paired the Bluetooth device with the XDAIIi. That is in connections. Make sure you also have bluetooth enabled too.
Then search on the internet for a program called gpsinfo.exe This will test your device is able to receive GPS signals and allow you to test out the com port that the device is using to receive (normally 5 or 6)
Then you can close down GPSInfo.
Once you have got a sucessful pairing - then launch Tom Tom, go to preferences and find GPS module in there. Select Other Bluetooth device and the com port that you received on.
You should see the blue and yellow circle start rotating once it starts to talk to the device and in time you will see the blue bars on the bottom left start to increase as it finds satellites and locks on.
You will now be able to disable bluetooth (once you are out of TomTom) as Tom Tom enables it and disables it as it runs.
I would also look at v5.21 for Tom Tom as it seems to be the most stable. My earlier ones would just stop working and crash to desktop

Those are excellent instructions.
When pairing your Bluetooth GPS receiver with your phone, make SURE that you follow the instructions for pairing to the letter, otherwise you may find that it just won't work. If you had instructions which came with the device, get them out and go through each step carefully (the instructions for my Qstarz GPS receiver were complex to say the least, but once it's sorted out it works great).

How to set up wired GPS /Tom tom connection

I have just picked up a WIRED GPS reciever and want to get it to talk to my XDA11i.
I also have tom tom that I want to use .
Tom tom expects to see the GPS unit on Com 1 ?
How do I set up the XDA to recieve GPS on com 1 (Tried all sorts of things but no joy , didnt believe I was an amateur but seesm I am . I haVE TURNED off " recieve all beams " but still no joy .
Any help greatfully appreciated.

I do use Pugs rom but have read that it is still possible to link to a wired device ? if not I will have to splash out on a Tom Tom Bluetooth Gps ? or will others do ?

Firstly, I am assuming you have got some way for the wired GPS to connect to your PDA (via car cradle or similar cable).
Ensure GPS unit is switched on & running, and connected to the PDA.
Start TomTom, which will ofc bleat "No GPS device!"
Tap screen, Change Preferences, tap next twice to take you to prefs screen 3, tap Show GPS status, then tap Configure
Tap the left/right arrows until Other NMEA GPS receiver is showing, then tap Select
Accept the default BAUD rate of 4800 for now, and tap Done
Now, you will be presented with a list of the available ports that TomTom can 'see'
You will probably have several COM ports available. (mine showed up with COM2, 4, 5, 6, and 9 available for example, but ymmv)
Checking that your GPS unit is still on, select the first suitable COM port in the list, whatever it is. This will take you to the GPS status screen.
IF you are lucky enough to have selected the correct port for your wired GPS unit first time, you will now see the yellow/black wheel at the top right rotating, which indicates it is receiving data from the GPS unit. (a non-rotating wheel means TomTom can't 'see' any GPS data coming in)
If the wheel is NOT rotating, don't panic, but once again tap the Configure button and repeat the steps, this time slecting the next COM port in it's list.
Repeat this process, moving down through the available list of COM ports until you hit the one where the wheel is rotating: this indicates that TomTom has successfully 'found' the GPS unit and is receiving data from it.
Assuming you DO get a rotating wheel, click done on the GPS Status screen and you will go back to TomTom's main screen, hopefully now with the correct location showing!

P.S. if you have had no joy with this, or dont have/cant find a cable to connect the GPS unit to the PDA/cradle, you may well find a Bluetooth GPS unit is a better way to go (try and get one with the SIRFSTar III chipset, as it's way better performance in marginal conditions): I navigate and leave my BT GPS (GlobalSat BT338) in the car glovebox and STILL get a good signal! - Joe

Thanks for the info I will try that one out tonight .
To try out the system I have picked up an early Rikaline wired unit which connects directly to the XDA11i socket as well as the car lighter socket to rum them both.
My question was did i need to do any thing to the XDA to tell it to accept the plugged in device ? as you would if you set up a bluetooth system ?
Does the XDA11i automatically SEE the device you have plugged in ?

The XDAIIi's socket contains both a USB interface (for the cradle) audio (for in-car sounds/wired handsfree) and a serial port, so as far as I know, once the GPS unit is plugged in (and assuming it outputs the NMEA standard for GPS data, which they all seem to do) all you would need to do would be to configure TomTom with the unit plugged in & working.
Once set up correctly, and you have a decent positional fix, quit TomTom in the normal way, leave it a minute or 2 and then re-start TomTom to check it saved the settings correctly.
If the settings were stored correctly, TomTom should start (can take a while with version 5.XXX, now down to a couple of seconds with V6.XXX) and then a short while later TomTom will announce on-screen "No GPS Device!"
(note: I have a bluteooth GPS and find although TomTom is capable of switching on BT for me, it will never 'see' the GPS this way: I have to switch BT on first, THEN run TT for it to see the GPS. It is entirely possible, that with a wired serial connection, TomTom may well see the GPS data immediately and NOT flash up the "no GPS device!" message, in which case it's win-win for you!)
Be patient at this point and it should soon 'see' the GPS data coming in and get a position up on the map.

After a frustrating day with the wired device I gave in and picked up a Bluenext BN-806F bluetooth gps unit .
But I am still having problems. I am not sure that the uinit is not faulty as even when paired the status shows NO data going either way . PS when I go to Blue tooth manager and then active connections there is only an outgoing connection set ???
Any chance yo can run through the set up for blue tooth gps and tom tom for me ( I have a copy of tt5.21).
Do I need to set any thing ref the Com ports / beam / baud rate ?
How do I set the time that the XDA11i holds an active connection before it times out ( if no data recieved ) as the XDA breaks the connection after a while of no activity ?

problem with gps receiver

I connect my alpine to the gps receiver, but after few minutes, the conenction drops. I have not figured any problems with my bt hansfree.
Can anyone help??

I have a similar problem . Alpine and BN806F , It pairs , wont talk then drops out ? I wonder if there is a time out after no activity ?
As my post says I am having a problem getting tom tom to see my gps reciever , do you have the some problem ? what am I doing wrong ?

Yes, I can't make my navigation program to see the gps receiver and after a while it gets disconnected...

To the OP - you said you cant get your navigation software 'see' the GPS - this is the root of the problem.
If your BT GPS unit doesnt see any requests to send data to the PDA, it will auto-switch off after a set period of time.
Once you can successfully configure your nav software to receive the GPS data, your bluetooth GPS unit will remain powered on.
You should have a software CD that came with the GPS unit (if not there are a number of freely downloadable GPS utilites for PDAs, some of which can scan for the unit to find it)- there's usually some very low-quality GPS checking utility that displays what satellites the unit can see, signal strength and so on: try using these programs to see if you can connect to your GPS, and if the unit than keeps the BT link open.
Maybe finding out which COM port the GPS unit appears on, will allow you to configure your nav software correctly to see the GPS.

I managed to connect it succesfully some times. Usually, it connects via bluetooth but it drops until I load navigator ( my navigation program). When I close the program, the bluetooth is off. I tried to search windows for power save settings but I didn't find something that would help.

Thanks for your advice I am still haviong big problems .
I have managed to get Tom tom to recognise a wired reciever ( but only once , and then when the cigarete lighter plug moved the unit powered down all was lost.
Do you know of any utilities that will show what is connected to what port as I believe this is the real problem . Aparently tom tom has a bad history of hijacking ports ?
It would be good to see what was actually going on .

GPS & Bluetoothproblem (newbie)

I have a slight problem with my gps, i've installed TomTom 6 (not the newest ver.) The problem is that i don't get a GPS signal, It just say "No valid GPS signal" and I do choose TomTom Bluetooth GPS reciver. Is that correct?
I do have a problem with my Bluetooth aswell, my Sony Ericsson HBH-PV705 Bluetooth headset (handsfree) doesn't connect to my TyTN II. I belive there might be some kind of setting that i've missed...
It connected nicley with my Samsung that I had before.
And I have downloaded and Installed the HTC hotfix regarding Bluetooth.
I've tried the search, but I couldn't se that there was anyone else with this problem.
Anyone who know what to do??

First off, are you sure you really need to use the Bluetooth adapter for GPS? After all, it comes with a built in one... I'll show you my config to get an idea:
GPS Receiver - Other NMEA GPS receiver
COM Port - 4
Baud Rate - 9600
I recommend you download and run GPS Test if you haven't already. This will tell you what Baud rate and COM port you should be running on.
In regards to your bluetooth Headset, are you sure you're following the correct process for pairing the device? I remember setting mine up, it was a nightmare... until i read the instruction

I just got my tytn II and am having the same problem. I don't have TomTom, but my gps doesn't seem to work, I tried gps test but after 10 minutes it still didn't tell me anything. I can't get my headset to work either, I paired them, the phone recognizes it, but doesn't let me talk on it.
I think me and Lalla have the same problem, I can't figure it out though =/

Firstly - have you got a TyTn or a TyTn II (AKA Kaiser)? As another poster says, why are you using bluetooth for GPS. The TyTn II has GPS built in!!!
Again as said above if it's a Kaiser you have use "other NMEA" as the device not bluetooth.
If Tomtom says "No valid signal" then it has found a GPS device but is waiting for a strong enough signal. The first time you set up it may take a long time to connect. Leave it in a place with a clear view of the sky. It will also help if you have run Quick GPS from your programs menu.

Did you change any settings in "External GPS"? This can cause connection problems. (There are fixes for it though).

Actually, that sounds like it's working OK. You will notice that the Kaiser picks up and drops sats every other second. There is a thread about this someplace. In other words as you move around the sat signal will pick up and drop sats as you move (even if you are standing still) When using Tomtom or the like this does not seem to matter and it works very well.
I have found that when you first switch on the GPS make sure you have a clear view of the sky all around, then you can move to more obscured areas and it will hold a proportion of the signal. If you switch on in an obscured area, then it will take a while to acquire a fix. Running Quick GPS regularly will speed things up.
As a guide, if I switch on indoors it can take ten minutes even near a window. In the car it fixes in less than a minute (normally).
The exception is if I last switched off GPS some miles from my current location. It seems it remembers the sats position from when it was last used so if you switch on later some miles away, it takes longer - presumably 'cos it's looking in slightly the wrong place.

I've managed to fix the settings for my GPS so it works fine. But the problem with my Bluetooth is still there...but I won't give up!

go to youre bluetooth devices, find your bluetooth headset from the list and tap it. now check and see if both boxes are ticked, the stereo headset and the handsfree. now go back to the list and long tap on the bluetooth headset and set it to handsfree. that should sort it. if not try repairing it

Didn't work for me. My bluetooth headset only gives me a hands free options but it does not work. I tried it on another phone and it works fine.
