Updating the Wizard wiki page - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Anyone here want to help with updating the page to make it more useful?
Also can people post links to threads they think would make great stickies?
Here is the wiki page... http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard

I've already added to it, and it's not hard. Just give it a go, and don't forget spellcheck.
You'll see more there from me in the coming days/weeks.

Nice! Thanks! I'm hoping to get some threads together that can be cleaned up and trimmed for stickies and link posting to the wiki.

I added a section on how to tell whether you have a G3 or G4 wizard at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard_Versions
Although, I'm thinking it should have it's own section since this is one of the first things many people will look for. Anyways, let me know if I did a halfway decent job at it...let me know if I should add things, format it differently, etc.

Let's clean up the Wizard Upgrading Forum.

Guys,
As everyone who has read more than 3 posts here knows the Wizard Forums have become quite the mess lately
To help fix this situation, the Admins and Moderators have wisely decided to add a few Moderators seeking members who are active in the various threads.
I was honored to be one of the Wizard Members selected for this task.
Now I need your help. This forum is a community effort, it should reflect the needs and wishes of the community. That is where you come in.
I've already made Faria's "CID Unlocking for AKU 2.x Roms" Thread STICKY. Hopefully this will make it easier for newbie and veterans alike to find.
Please submit suggestions for other useful threads whose content should be made sticky.
I would like to eventually get this type of content added to the WIKI and then replace the stickies with a single closed thread that has links to the various sections of the new Wiza-Wiki.
Also, I know that we have a few members working on getting the Wiza-Wiki in shape, let's get behind them and support their efforts.

Why not simply gather up all the threads a newbie would need in order to SIM/CID-unlock, upgrade, etc into one sticky post and call it something like "all you need to know to upgrade your wizard"... Might help to clear up some confusion

Perfect idea, let's get the threads collected. Then we can compile the info into a concise thread and close it so it doesn't become useless.
My suggestions:
1. The wiki - of course
2. Everything that's already sticky
3. changing splashscreens
4. faria's ext-rom guide
5. One of the "wizard wont start" threads - even though it's not really an upgrade issue it's seems to be a fairly reoccuring question.
I'm sure the list will grow but this was what I found after a quick runthrough.
Other than that one might also want to mention the meaning of WWE and the fact that you can change the language by changing rom etc
Pehaps also the fact that the standard user profile is set to only display threads 1 month old...
Basically just include every question ever asked by anyone who's ever had a problem
2 cents
My 2 cents... Let's not make mess in one separate thread cause it would be hard to find the answers in it. Let newcomers see what they are looking for reading the thread header. I suggest to collect threads worth to be sticky in separate subforum say Wizard FAQ where users can't write, just read. Reviewing the FAQ time to time move some threads into Wiza-Wiki.
And if one of those n00b threads would appear in any of Wizard forum we could send newcomers to FAQ first (say by PM) and then send a message to mods to close or kill the thread.
So the structure of the Wizard forum could be:
Wizard FAQ
Wizard
Wizard upgrading
Wizard accessories etc.
G4
Rom updates
I think, to stop some of the annoying threads, it would be wise to stop the uploading and/or posting password protected ROM's and have the whole forum commenting, guessing........ it's childish and could be handled by PM's or E-mails.
Yes, I'm jealous........ but it is not helping the forum.
How about this one:
* I have developed I great new ROM, which is unbelievable, should I release it or not ?*
Is also not helping.
Kyphur, I think you will be a great mod, but don't just look at the n00bs.
Also, too many Stickies is improving, try using folders in stead.

It's NOT childish! Right now Jose is dealing only with me and it's better that way. I've uncovered a couple of bugs that we can fix before it hits the streets. Not quite ready for prime time, sorry. What's childish is the people that can't make a working ROM work because of themselves.
And be very careful of what you're jealous of. I've hard reset 2 phones today at least 10 times each, not counting going back and forth between two version of Jose's latest ROM on those two phones. We're talking 4 hours, maybe 5... and we're still working on it.

I merely help in the initial bug testing. If this particular bug had been released the *****ing would have been legendary and why clog up our threads this early. As it turns out Faria just sent me what appears to be the fix.
I expect some more beta testers will be invited now, though that's not my call (but it is my recomendation)

That would be good -- if it would work. Problem is that people just want to jump in with both feet asking questions WITHOUT reading first. That's been the problem all along and why the forum is such a mess now.
I'm SOOOOOO tired of the "I bricked my phone" threads and the "How do I unlock. . . " threads when all that information is already here several times over.
Just my 2 cents.
Is there any REAL way to 'make' someone read BEFORE posting?? That's the problem, as I see it.
Okay, we're getting a little off topic.
I think the point here is to address the most with the least.
By getting the CID Unlocking, Rom Flashing and other much sought after info stickied and closed threads then we can simply shut down new "I brincked my Phone" or What is CID unlocking threads by redirecting the OP to the stickied threads and then deleteing the new thread before it pollutes the already clogged threads.
After this pro-active approach is implimented, I will be more than happy to sift through the mounds of threads mercilessly deleting the old threads that are nothing but confusing and clogging to the search function.
It is impossible to have something that people will read before posting. I suggest that we have a section of FAQ by noobs, which other members can just post a single line "go read the wiki".
the best place to start with clean up is the wikki, i looked through the wizard wikki last night and its horrible.. there is even a post from someone on there looking for something specific with their email address, didnt even bother to post it in the boards..
BTW, im a mod now to i will start looking and cleaning up tonight when i get home!

Wizard Upgrading for Newbies!

Hi all,
There was so much information all over the place (different threads, wiki, etc.), that I decided to create one page to pull it all together. The page can be found here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard Windows Mobile 6 for newbies
If there's something wrong, something I missed, something you want to add, etc., be my guest and put it in. However, please do not link to other pages. I want to specifically avoid a proliferation of links that will leave a newbie pulling his hair out. I also want to hear comments. Thanks all.
Great abd easy to read
Thanks for putting that together! I wish I had found this earlier.

Actually its quite good but you could add also the instructions on how to update a G4 They can now be CID Unlocked by HardSPL, meaning we can flash a ROM that doesn't have any IPL/SPL info on them like in G3, using the RUU.

GREAT TUTORIAL!! Something like this should have been written up sooner.
Now to get the newbies to actually read it...
I have posts all over this forum so I am going to add a link to your tutorial in the Wiki to my signature. Maybe that will get it more exposure.
EDIT:: I took the liberty to add tutorials to your WIKI page for HardSPL, SoftSPL, and how to Remove HardSPL. All credits for the WIKI page are still yours.
dharvey4651,
Thank you for your contribution. I own a G3, so I have no idea about G4's, which is why I never put that portion of the tutorial in. I want to put in a few other things (i.e how to change the bootscreen, etc.), so I'll do that over the next couple of days.
EDIT: I took out that bit about the shelltool because I didn't think it's be relevant to a newbie who probably won't know what a shelltool is. He'll find out more about it once he starts reading the forums.
The rest,
Thanks for your kind words. Just giving something back.

Well I also have a G3. It's completely fried, but it's a G3.
I used to have a G4 and I know how hard it was to find a good tutorial for G4 devices so that is why I took it upon myself to create one and add it to your already outstanding tutorial.
I put the link to this tutorial in the front page of the wizard wiki. Hope people read it. :?

One could only hope. Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen. Now if the Wiki was the Home page and you could acess the forum through the Wiki that would be ideal.

Kaiser FAQ WIKI Discussion thread - Help needed!

Guys/Gals I need some help. I have seen an abundance of questions lately that I know for a fact are in the FAQ wiki. However, over half are not in Q&A format and are quite hard to follow/understand.
I have converted the Flashing section to Q&A format but I need help doing the rest. I work anywhere from 40-60 hrs a week and I really don't have the time to do the entire WIKI by myself. I am not asking for sympathy on my work week or any of that. That's life. Grin and deal with it. What I am asking is that If people would just modify 1 or 2 of the links in to Q&A format, it would not take nearly as long.
I am just trying to help and bring down the number of redundant questions. All of the info on how to edit the WIKI are there when you click edit. It's really simple to edit. Just a lot still to do.
Thanks everyone.
Here is the link to the FAQ Wiki.
OMG there is a WIKI? Man people should read that
If I get some time I'll give it a go.
Thanks man. I appreciate it.
In my opinion, Newbs that ask questions obviously dont take the time to read wiki or search, its much easier to ask a question and say "i searched" than it is to actually search. I have a idea for the newbs if it is a redundant post just ignore it. Like someone told me once "its like comming over to someones house uninvited and not taking your muddy shoes off" its flat out rude.

I appreciate your sentiment but if it was in Q&A format, the redundant questions might slim down. They will never be obliterated but they might be curbed to a minimal. However, I do agree with you that it is easier to ask and say you searched even though we all know they don't. I was just thinking that it might help slim them down somewhat.

ok, i added the sim unlocking to the "other" section, dont know where else to put it.
although all the questions have been converted to Q&A form, you can still help, there is a todo list at the top of the FAQ, so please feel free to help with that. if you're afraid that you will mess up in editing the wiki, then just post you suggestions here.
Anyone know how Flar is getting on with the MediaWiki upgrade?
It would make the Wiki much more user friendly place to be.
I help out on GuildWiki (yes I'm a gamer ) and know my way around the WikiCode and system, so I'm willing to chip in where I can.

Looks great man. Nice indeed.
I was perusing over the Kaiser FAQ Wiki and I was wondering if we should break out each section as a separate page that. And we could have links from the main FAQ page to the Kaiser FAQ Flashing page, And The Kaiser FAQ Configuration, etc. That would make it less lengthy and maybe easier to navigate. I'm wondering if people are being over whelmed.
What do you guys think? I don't want newbies to say I couldn't find the question on the main page, becasue its on a separate page. However, I don't want them to say they couldn't find it because there are a ton of FAQs.

[Q] wiki or sticky comparing all these new roms

I think we should have a wiki or sticky comparing all of these Rome with good points and bad points for each one. I'm sure others are like me and dont want to read thru 1000's of posts just to read the same repeatative bugs over and over again. How about a wiki with the latest roms and a updated change log with a link to there respective threads. I think this would easily benefit the whole.community.

The wiki is awesome, but it doesnt show the most common bugs for the roms, just what the roms are based on. I do agree that it would be nice to direct new people to a post or site when they ask "so now i'm rooted what rom should I use?". I cant tell you how many times I have rolled my eyes at that question, or lol'ed when someone says "if you have to ask, go install cognition".

its a wiki. people can go and edit as they see fit. why reinvent the wheel? add a section and start inputting the info.
I started making this:
http://bit.ly/cap-roms
But got lazy after the first draft of it.
Also, I felt there was a lot of information missing in the chart on mine, so it wasn't necessarily super useful. For example, bugs of the ROM, whether bloatware removed, deodexed, zipaligned, themed, etc. So not really a great chart for comparison
I agree that a wiki with all the latest info about the ROMs including features and bugs would be awesome, but it's proper place is certainly on the XDA wiki. I'm not actually positive the I897 page is the best place, because some of us are using the I896, etc. I think a page for all Captivate ROMs would make more sense. Would love to see a feature matrix, and list of common bugs per ROM, etc.
With a wiki they can edit the bugs and features but you wont have to search so much for it and if you wanted more details about then a link to that rims thread would work. I know there is a I897 wiki but this would help out users tremondously. The Debs will just have to do some more copy and pasteing their changelogs to the wiki.
This has been considered by many and even started a few times by others but the main issue is that there are some bugs that dont effect everyone. Keeping it updated with roms have up to 5 builds a week with some small and some major changes. If you feel up to it by all means feel free, but I think you will find you are asking for alot more work then you thought at first.
All I ask is for the devs to post their changelogs to one page that is free from commenting. If there are more bugs that what is stated in their changelog then that is what the forums are for.
I am not even going to try and keep up with looking for changelogs from all of these different roms but the devs could just post it one one page with others devs changelogs so we dont have search and search for everything. A download link to the rom would help and MAYBE even a ranking system with like 5 stars would be sweet

Its a nice blog, but Im not sure I understand what the purpose of the blog would be.
I mean, all the info you want to put on it, are allready here in this forum. I cant really see any benefit of having it on the blog also, and I cant really see why developers etc. should have an interest in having to update both in this forum and on your blog also. It only means more work. In regards to users, they would propably still go here first, because this would still be the place where info are posted first, and then they would not need to visit the blog afterwards anyways. And if some users would prefer to use the blog and its forum first, then all we achieve is information being scattered on different sites which isnt a benefit to anyone.
So the blog looks nice and all, no criticism there, but it seems slightly redundant to have it imho.

Yes you are right
but we all know that blog has better SEO so there will be more visibility of the stuffs
and writing in blog is much more easier than Forum. so it will not take that much effort as you just have to copy and paste
Having everything about Lg Optimus 2x / G2x in one Blog will rather organize everything than scattering it
which is definitely a benefit to both Reader and Publisher
I did like it very much I have bookmarked it and will be reading it every day. I just hope you update it often.
I like this idea of having new information and releases in the blog, saves scouring the forum every day and information is better ordered
