I have used various of customized wizard roms and have been pretty ignorant to the missed phone calls and no voicemail notification problem until recent(about 2 weeks ago) when I suddenly received a notification of 22 missed calls and 15 unheard voice messages. I think this is a fundamantle problem to any phone/ROM so we really need to get to the bottom of this. Does any one out there also have this problem? Please share your carrier and settings. Or better yet, please throw in a couple of ideas.
I have CINGULAR 8125 G3 and use CINGULAR as my carrier.
Here is my sympton:
1. intermittently miss phone calls, with no notification (missed call; voice mail) afterward. It might be related to intensively use some application like PIE or total-commander but I don't have solid data point to prove that. To proved it will need a pretty exhaustive testing being performed.
2. sometimes when trying to make calls, the sound quality was really bad and the call was dropped very shortly after making connection. However after a soft reset of the phone I could call out again with decent connection quality. Again this is really intermittent and not easily reproduced. However I suspect when the phone could not call out it probably couldn't receive calls either. So this issue could be related to the first issue.
First question is: Is this due to the new AKU3.2 rom? I am not sure about this because for once or twice with my phone flashed with 2.26 rom I still experience the problem that the phone couldn't call out until soft reset.
My other suspect is the omapclock overclocking. Because if the CPU being overclocked, maybe the cpu core that is in charge of the phone operation will get overclocked it cannot work properly when overclocked?
As you can see I am only shooting in the dark. Therefor any ideas will be welcomed/appreciated.
I read a lot about people missing phone calls and such when using the AKU 3.2 rom which is why I won't touch those roms anymore. There were even more problems with those roms on cingular, such as not being able to hang up without resetting the phone. You might want to do a quick search or scan thru the AKU 3.2 threads and take a look.
OK. Let me change to a different question: does any one has the same issue with a AKU2.x ROM? I am asking this because I am not sure if this is a AKU3 ROM problem.
How do I make a fancy poll in the beginning of this thread?
Same as above. You'll get a lot more out of reading the AKU 2 threads that are already have (and have been for some time) than by starting yet another poll few will answer. I've not heard of such a problem, nor have I ever experienced it. The AKU 2.3 roms seem pretty stable these days. I think, for the most part, this is a great example of "newer isn't always better".
Thank you Mark for sharing your thoughts and your experience. Which carrier and phone are you using? I have noticed that the cituation varies among different carriers also.
I have been using my cingular phone with both AKU3.2 and AKU2.26 and I have had at least 1 incident of phone not able to establish a steady call until a soft reset. And that's why I am trying to gather other people's data point.
Well I have the same problem with the following configuration:
MDA Vario - T-Mobile, Netherlands
IPL 2.26
SPL 2.26
Radio 2.47.11
OS 2.26.10.2 (AKU 2.3 based)
The problem of the missed calls came to my attention (via my girlfriend) when I was running a AKU2.3 based rom. At this moment I am still running the same ROM and frequently have this problem.
Hopefully this data will help analyse the problem. If I can help in any way, please let me know.
well i noticed an odd one with my kjam when i received it back from repair, it was using the latest imate rom which ever that was and it wasnt giving me the voicemail notification... it was just messaging telling me i have a sms waiting for me but i cannot download it because my phone is apparently full.. kept getting that all day, even though i deleted all of the 10 sms i had in there.
turns out it was a voicemail message. :|
There is a topic that makes clear that this happens on the dutch T-Mobile network too. I downgraded my radio rom to the original 2.19.11 and it solved my problem.
You can try disabeling the USSD service as it seems to help some people on Faria's 3.2 rom.
I have a suspect that overclocking of the CPU using OMAPCLOCK might be related to this problem. The problem to verify this is that I need a sequence with which I can constantly reproduce the miss call problem. Then I can perform further test with different combination of ROMs, applications, CPU speed configuration etc. I will definitely keep reporting my progress. Does any one have any suggestions/ideas?
Here is the testing schem I have designed:
I asked my wife and my son to call my CELL every 30min-1hr, leave voice message if they were redirected to the answer service. Then I can have a record and a clear indication on how many calls I have missed. Here is the current configuration I am using:
Cingular Plan with GPRS data package.
Molski AKU2.26 release ROM
2.47.11 Radio
No overclocking(195MHZ for 8125)
I will get a call hit/miss ratio after a day or two. Then I will switch to different setup(CPU Clock, AKU, Radio ROM etc.). Hopefully I can determine which is the determining factor in causing this missing call issue.
If you are interested in this test. Please join me and feel free to define your test scheme so we can have a broader test coverage. If eventually this turns out to be a Carrier problem, then we would have more data point to push the carriers to fix this.
Your participation would be greatly appreciated.
USA Cingular missed call possible solution
Like many USA Cingular customers with Faria's excellent 3.2 rom I started to miss calls and voicemail alerts. I would miss calls in places with great reception for no apparent reason, not just in places with spotty reception. I think I may have a solution to the problem.
Cingular has been giving customers a new 64k orange colored sim card to replace the older 32k black colored sims. I went to cingular to get my new card and I also received horrible reception at my house. After replacing the card several times the reception did not get any better.
I was able to speak with one of the upper level techs, and here is what was explained to me:
Cingular is in the process of combining all of it's network with the former AT&T network here in the US. Cingular has 2 networks each color coded "Orange" and "Blue". Cingular Orange is the original Cingular network from the time when SBC and BellSouth merged their wireless units. Cingular Blue is everything that Cingular got through the AT&T merger in 2003. This includes all AT&T Wireless GSM 850/1900 licenses, markets and network assets (i.e. towers etc). When I changed my sim, I also changed my primary network from Orange (registered on my old sim) to Blue. To remedy my spotty coverage at my house the tech switched me back to Orange.
Ever since I've been back on the Orange network I have not missed a call or voicemail, and it's not because I get better reception. I have been testing for 2 weeks now, and everthing is been going great! I have had the USSD service disabled, I just started the service again and will test with USSD on auto, but I'm guessing it will work. I will report back later.
This would confirm that it is a network issue, and not an issue for all users. Give Cingular a call and ask to change to the Orange network, you can always call to change it back!
Intesesting.... In addition to the missed calls and voicemail issues, did you have the phone buttons not responding issues? For instance, with any AKU 3.2 ROM, after a day or three, when I hit the "7" key to delete a message I see the & register on the screen but the phone's not aware. Or I can't hang up the phone and either have to wait or reset ...
tia
Sorry Dr. P, but I never had any of the button press issues.
I have been having this problem for about 6 months. On top of the problems of missing calls (I can call myself and while the landline I'm calling from will ring the whole time, the cell never wakes up or rings) I'm also having problems where I sometimes can't hang up a phone call or when I press a button in the middle of a call (like punching in my VM password) it doesn't register.
I'm also on Cingular.
I'm using a K-Jam using the last K-Jam FW. The only thing I have done is added A2DP using the patch (which I have since uninstalled). I'm not overclocking
If I soft reset my device, the problem goes away.
The only thing I noticed that was odd, is it seems to only happen when I've regsitered on a tower close to my office. It never happens when I'm anyplace else. Once I register on that tower, I have problems until I soft reset my device. If I never go to work, I don't have it. Could be a coincidence but I don't know.
If it's not a carrier problem, my thought is it's a system resource problem where something is dragging the memory down or conflicting.
More info (since I'm running a clean stock ROM):
I'm not running any today plugins that aren't standard (email, tasks, calendar, etc) EXCEPT I am running the wireless hack in the registry where it shows your carrier plus wireless info. I'm also unning PHM Tray Launch and sometimes when I soft reset my device, it won't display until I come back to the Today Screen a few times.
Other than that, I don't have a lot of SW installed on my device.
Hope this helps...
-Mc
I also have the button press issues. I can try to delete a message and while I hear the DTMF, the network does not.
I'm using the standard K-Jam FW on my K-Jam. No customized ROM here with the exception I loaded the A2DP patch.

OK, I'm confused with my SIMs.
I have 2:
1.) 64k Cingular with green back. I originally got it from when I switched from AT&T wireless, 2 years ago, January. And it worked, so I continued to use it in my new phones. (Including my Wizard.)
2.) 64k Cingular with blue back. I got this one when I got a warranty replacement phone over the summer. (Says 3G, and has a different arrangement of contacts.)
I have to assume that I skipped over these orange SIM cards that keep getting mentioned.
Any confirmation or further info?
I would say for those who are on Cingular and having problems should post up which Cingular SIM card they have... That may cut through the possibility that the SIM may be the cause of most problems.
I used an AT&T Wireless (Cingular Blue) customer who was given the white SIM card with the black text and blue logo; I used to have lots of problems with reception and dropped calls with it and it didn't matter which phone my SIM card was in. I was told that if I migrated over to Cingular (Cingular Orange) that their new 64K SIM card could resolve my reception problems...
I currently use a Cingular 64K SIM (Orange and white color with 64K text) and it has resolved issues I used to have with previous phones. My unlocked T-Mobile MDA using the Radio ROM included (I believe it's the iMate Radio ROM) with Molski's new AKU 3.2 ROM has had no problems with reception or missed calls.
For those with problems with the ROM, I would possibly try to get a hold of a Cingular Radio ROM from the FTP server. I know that when my phone still had the default T-Mobile 2.26 G3 ROM, my reception was a little bit fuzzy on calls.

Yeah, it looks like you skipped over the orange 64K SIM's and got a 3G 64K instead.
Kudos to FunkyB! I always suspected there is something fishy in the network itself. Here is my test result so far:
Molski 2.26 ROM
2.47.11 Radio
No overclocking
Received: 11 calls
Missed: 1 calls + No voice message notification
2 extra findings:
If I press "ignore" immediately after hearing the ringtone, the other end will get busy tone.
If I press "ignore" after at least 2 rings, the other end get the voice mail
Navizon doesn't work on Molski's latest 2.26 ROM! (I found out this when I am trying to run every bit of apps I could find during the testing).
So here is another factor into my testing: Cingular BLUE or Cingular Orange. Is there any easy way for me to determine my network?
PS. I concour to Mr. McHale's finding also.

My Sim Card is orange color. Is it possible that Cingular still put you on BLUE when you have a orange colored Sim? I used to be AT&T but I switched my SIM about 6 months ago.

I've noticed in several threads that some people (including me) are experiencing dropped connections while making voice calls. Maybe in this thread we can find the cause of this and hopefully also a solution.
Symptoms are that while making a voice call, the call is dropped after a few minutes (mostly somewhere between 2 and 5 minutes). When this happens the GSM connection seems to be lost completely, e.g. the GSM connection indicator in the top bar indicates that it is searching for a network. After a few seconds the GSM connection is re-established again, but the call is lost.
Some possible causes that me and other people are thinking about: Using US radio ROM in Europe, having GPRS applications active, automatic network selection, or having the password screen activated after x minutes of inactivity.
As far as I've seen, most people experiencing this problem are running one of the AKU 2.3 ROM's. I'm running the MrClean AKU 2.3 ROM:
From Settings -> System -> Device Information:

I'm using an MDA Vario on the T-Mobile NL network. Running applications include:
ActiveSync over GPRS/PushMail (via mail2web.com)
Agile Messenger over GPRS
Magic Button
Calendar+
I've got automatic network selection enabled, as well as the automatic password lock activating after 5 minutes of inactivity.
When replying, please included the same information as I did and any other information/questions that might be usefull. I'm interested in this information from people that are experiencing the same problem, but also from people that are not experiencing this.
Let's hope we can find a solution for this.
This happens to me as well. I hear a click noise followed by a total reset of the radio. The service search starts anew and within 20 seconds I'm back in business. Pretty irritating for business calls, however.
I am running the O2 2.21.4.1 WWE with a radio ROM of 02.07.10

This is just an out-of-the-blue thought, but have any of you with issues tried getting a new SIM?
I had an instance once where a SIM of mine would accept incoming calls but would not make outgoing calls (on any phone). After troubleshooting with the carrier and determining that everything was as it should be on the account the rep finally suggested that I try a new SIM. The theory was that the SIM had been partially damaged somehow (most likely from electric shock by moving it in and out of differnet phones) and couldn't properly authenticate.
Popped over to the store, got a new SIM and all was well.
Now, I'm not saying that getting a new SIM will solve your problem, but it's the only thing that comes to mind. Everyone who's having trouble, are the SIMs you are using older chips?
a 2nd question would be
are you sims unlocked or just CID
i just CID unlocked my phone ..
.. just wondering
new sim card helps
i was having the same issues with my phone dropping calls about every 5 to 10 minutes and i just went to the cingular store with the new rom and all on my phone and told the guy in there that they never gave me a 3g sim with my phone when i bought it and they had just used my old sim and swapped into it and the guy at the cingular store just took my old sim out copied over my numbers for me on his computer and then stuck the new 3g sim in my phone and i haven't had any issues with it since and that was probably 5 days ago or so it has been just great so that might make a difference
it even made it make the toast that summiter programmed this new rom to make perfectly now instead of burning it all the damn time
freakin sim cards always over charging my toast
hahahaha

hmm. plausible. im headed to the cingular store tomorow to see if this will work for me as well. I'll post back tomorow
I'm a little confused on 3g sim's fixing this??? This 8125 isn't 3g ready but is 2.5 edge from all I've read up on. Supposedly the Hermes later this year will be Cingular's 3g PDA. I must be missing something here I guess....

I've experienced this a few times in the last few hours.
I'm currently on Automatic network selection. I'll try changing to manual and see if that helps.
The only program I have running that uses GPRS is PocketWeather, which updates every 15 mins. That could be causing problems. The longest conversation I've had on this AKU2.3 ROM (xelencin's, which I've been running for only 24 hours) is 48 minutes. So if PocketWeather is causing the problem, it's not doing it every time.
i am not expercing this at all. im running aku2.3 (mr.clean) and have 0 problems w/ dropped calls
i am not running any gprs apps tho. and i send alot of MMS but i can talk for hrs without any issue.. just got off a 3.5hr phone call no problem at all.. thank god for my jabra cuz i couldnt hold this 1000000000lb phone upto my ear for 3 1/2 hrs lol
your ears must be bleeding
I have a totally new SIM in that phone, since I got it with providerchange... now if I only could remember, if I had the same problem with my old O2 SIM that I had in there previously (phone came 3 month earlier than SIM)
I do not have any problem (yet...)!!
I'm running this rom.

well i just checked my phone and i have a pretty blue 3g sim in there as well..

ps you can tell if it is 3g (cingular at least) by taking it out and looking at the back
dave
hm, what exactly is 3G, or, where does the SIM differ? As far as I know, 3G is just a description of services (Videoconferencing?)
I'm not sure what kind of SIM I have; it says T-Mobile on one side, and just some gold connections and a lot of numbers on the other side. Any way to find out? It is quite a new SIM, about 4 months old. I have another prepaid SIM at home that I'll try, but it's T-Mobile as well and I got it only a few weeks earlier.
I've now got GPRS applications disabled, and switched network selection to manual. However, I don't make that many long phone calls, so can't tell yet whether it makes a difference.
is there a way to log the length of a phonecall? In call history it isn't visible...
I have cing 8125, have used various roms. I think that it's pocket weather connecting for an update that is cutting off my phone calls, usually between 3 and 5 minutes. I turned off pw updates and I was still on at 14 minutes. I have posted about this at sbsh forum
This is a problem where you have an apparently good 3G signal BUT you cannot make or receive calls or texts and you can't establish a data connection. There is no obvious sign that you are in this state until you try to call, text or access data.
The "solution" from T-Mobile in the UK is to force the phone "band" setting from Auto to GSM, then it works. But of course its not a solution as you lose 3G.
If you are at work with a 3 icon on your phone, just try calling it from your desk and see if you get straight to voicemail or not.
After discussions with T-Mobile they are sending me a replacement handset but if the postings in Modaco are anything to go by then I am not alone in this.
What is not clear is whether this is restricted to:
1. The T-Mobile UK network
2. The T-Mobile UK Vario III firmware
3. A combination of the above
4. A general design fault with some Kaiser's
This is being discussed in the Modaco forums but I couldn't find any mention here.
I make dozens of calls, and send around 50+ SMS a day.
No problems in the last month.
I am an Australian Kaiser owner running on the Three network.

Hi there,
I have the same issue on T-Mobile in Germany.
What I have not been able to figure out is if the phone works again after a while or if one needs to reset (as I always do).
Regards,
Martin
I have tried soft resets and even a hard reset and it appears to be random whether it starts working again. This seems to be same experience as the Modaco users.

Well, I worked for T-Mobile UK recently and had the very same issue on my Vario II, even whilst at work where there was a large mast and the 3G coverage was the strongest in the country.
on further investigation, everyone else in the area had the same issue. sometimes it would work ok, a lot of the time i had to manually set to 2G just to be able to use the phone functions.
in T-Mob we could check the strength of various 2 & 3G signals by postcode, and the signal in the area was very strong, with no outstanding work issues or problems (according to our system)
was never able to figure out why this was happening, and nobody was able to answer the questions.
so -
seems to be T-Mob UK (perhaps just in various areas at various times), and is not limited to your Kaiser / Vario, so at least you can relax cos it's not a faulty phone
Thanks for the very useful post. Unfortunately that doesn't give us a solution. If this cannot be fixed then T-Mobile is useless for me.

i've been experiencing the same - no data access when using 3g (whilst showing 2 bars) but connecting fine using gsm.
can anyone point me in the direction of a replacement comm manager with the same icons as the default kaiser but with a 3g switch in the vacant slot ?
i've been looking at a few replacement comm managers but can't seem to find what i'm looking for ...
This is NOT a problem with your Kaiser, replacing your phone will not make a difference. It is problem with your provider's tower hard/software. Strange that T-Mobile has not told you this when you contacted them about it.
T-Mobile in the Netherlands does not have this problem, but the KPN network does. KPN is however in the process of replacing the faulty hardware (or maybe they are already done now, even) and suddenly the problem disappears
Found the solution!!
Hello,
I had the same problem untill one day I inserted my sim card in another phone (a very old nokia - as basic as it gets).
For some reason that I don't know, when I put the sim card back in the TyTN II it was working and keeps on working.
This has happened over a month ago, and I now don't hv a problem.
Try to do the same, see if it works for You

Nope, I already tried the SIM in another phone (an SE W880i) and it was okay. I put it back in the Vario III and it still didn't work.
I also tried soft and hard resets.

i can confirm that this didn't work for me either. :-(
worth a try though ...
I had this with a Hermes on Orange UK a year ago. They admitted that the local cell was faulty and was being fixed and asked me to go to GSM for a week. After a week I switched back and it was fine.
Am now using a Kaiser (O Tytn2) in same location and its fine.
well i know ive been having problems sending mms whenever im on the 3g network, but as soon as i switch to gsm then the mms sends fine!

This is correct, the problem is indeed not your Tytn II. I've called with a dutch provider (Telfort) which makes use of the KPN network. And it is technically not possible. So we must wait till the provider makes sure this is possible.
I also was surprised that they never told me this in advance. Actually they didn't knew it was an problem till I called them.
Er, exactly what "is not possible"?
3G to 2G switching works fine on my other phone (an HSDPA-enabled Nokia 6120 Classic, on the same network).
So how can this not be handset related? I can see how it could be a combination of the phone and the network but if other handsets can cope then it must be related to the handset in some way.
Incidentally I am now using my replacement Vario III and so far so good but its early days yet.

I get this in the UK on a Tuesday at around 16:00 and then all is ok after 17:00. If I turn off HSDPA then this does not happen at all.
My view is the T-Mobile network. Being as I know when it happens its not a problem but I think they have time slots for software upgrades etc to the HSDPA side of things and this is when your phone goes into a GSM lockout.
If I keep the phone on 2g then it never happens .
This also happened on my N95 on the same day at the same time also , so i would guess its a network thing
I had this occur again this morning, on the new handset. I tried to call home with a full set of bars and the phone in 3G - the call wouldn't go through.
Switched to 2G, call goes through.
The problem is that when you are in this mode there is no way to tell, without trying to make a call. Your phone is effectively useless as no-one can call or text you and you can't call out. You are blissfully unaware.
This is not an acceptable situation.

I have suddenly started to experience this problem on T-Mobile UK, starting last night. It finds a 3G network, but I cannot receive or send calls or SMS. If the network drops to 2G, I can generally receive texts, but it's only if I lower my band to GSM only that I can make or receive calls, or use data.
T-Mobile are generally crappy in my area anyway, my phone is forever flipping between 2 and 3G. Can anyone confirm what 3's coverage is like in south london (stockwell area if possible) and what sort of data/call packages you can get sim-only, as I fear that they may not work out as cheap as T-mobile's.
incidentally, I don't think it's an MDA vario problem as I'm running the TyTn II.
Folks,
(I've searched around a bit and seen some reference to this problem but no definitive discussion. I apologize in advance if I missed anything and humbly request a pointer to the existing info if so.)
Just got a Tilt last weekend. On 3 occasions so far I looked at the screen and noticed that the phone had no signal (triangle with ! next to it). So for several hours each time, no one could call me. Going into comm mgr, the phone radio was still on.
This was in an area with no signal problems; soft reset or pulsing the phone radio in comm mgr would restore functionality with 3-4 bars. I finally nailed this down to having been in an area in the center of the building where I work, where signal gets lost. It appears that my Tilt never automatically recovers from a lost signal.
I saw this problem on the ROMs that came with the device and now it also continues with the new one that was just released by HTC a couple of days ago. In case it matters the phone is unlocked (using jump_spl and the other related tools and procedures found here, thanks).
Do I just have a defective Tilt? I mentioned this to others in my office and a few folks also claim to see this, and like I said I have seen *some* mention of this on the internet... I'd be astounded if this were really a problem endemic to all Tilts -- would people really put up with this?
Anyone have any additional insight?
It used to happen with me when I had the stock AT&T rom. I flashed the stock HTC rom and I don't recall ever having that problem, and now I've flashed SNE v2.5 and I don't have that problem.
My suggestion is to flash a new rom and see if that helps, and to make sure you're using a correct radio.
where do I get official htc radio and rom downloads?
hi folks,
where can i get official HTC radio and ROM downloads? I have an HTC TYTN II (acquired in Hong Kong) with ROM 1.56.721.3, Radio 1.27.12.11 & Protocol 22.45.88.07H just last month and already I'm encountering problems with the phone just losing the signal and staying lost and I'm considering upgrading however since my phone is brand new (practically), i want an "official" upgrade so as not to void the warranty. any help would be appreciated.
thanks and best regards...
I'll have to decide whether I have the cohones to flash an HTC ROM. Might at least be worth a try.
try this, go into comm manager, than settings for the phone (right soft key), than over to the Band tab, if I select the network type as GSM and leave the band on auto mine will contstantly serch for signal. i know this because my office is as close to a bomb shelter as they come and it never stops searching.
another good to this is battery life is improved
the BAD, if you want to use 3G you have to turn network back to auto and band to auto. not really a big deal cuz i dont have 3G here (yet).
a little workaround that works for me.
Thanks for that... I am running an AT&T ROM and even though I've supposedly turned on the Band tab in phone settings via KaiserTweak, I do not see a band tab. Should I?
I have almost this same exact problem! As of two weeks ago, my tilt started not allowing me to make calls
I then realized that it was also sending all my calls to voice mail. Thing is, the phone says that I have signal and has the Edge connection sign at the top. Whenever I try to make a call, the phone says "operation cannot be completed" or it will simply beep at me as if the call ended, right after it started.
A soft reset allows this to work. I've had this problem even happen right after hanging up with someone, and then trying to redial another number 5 seconds later. I doubt the phone really lost the signal.
Any ideas?
Hello

Thanks
I had the same problem with my O2 XDA Stellar, it was fine for a couple of months, then I could hardly call out on it, email wouldn't send, could rarely go online etc etc. It seemed to be better on GSM/GPRS than 3G, HSDPA etc. I assumed it was a harware problem & as it was under warranty I got a replacement from O2 & it's been fine so far.
AT&T replaced the SIM card in my phone and I believe this has fixed the problem. I have lost signal many times (elevators, garages, etc) and it recovers each time.
Hello guys, i'm about to pull my hair out from frustration! I have an unlocked Tilt, on T-Mobile running on the HTC windows 6.1 Rom and for some reason i cannot send or receive text messages if i leave a good distance from my house!
Once i'm near my house by a block or so i'll receive and send text messages no problem, but there are patches around my town where i can't send or receive it. I tried switching my Sim card to an older phone and texting where i couldn't text on my Tilt, and the texts went through no problem, i just need to know if it's my phone or the carrier's fault. I plan on testing my Tilt and Wing in the same area's to see if that can shed some light, but i need help!

What's the reception like? You might try flashing a new radio, might give you better reception in some patches. What wm6.1 rom/radio are you using?
Currently my Rom Version is 3.03.405.0 WWE
Radio Version 1.64.06.04
I've tried countless rom's at first i thought it was because of windows 6.1 so i tried the HTC Windows 6.0 rom which didn't work either.
If you think i could use a better rom would you please let me know, i'm willing to do anything to fix this problem!
Thanks
i think it has nothing to do with a better rom...its just if the radio is fitting for the location u are at

thank you for your reply's i will try different radio's and see which one works best for me, thanks once again.

no problem man, that's what we're all here for.
One quick question about Radio's, are they just for signal strength? because i can make and receive calls just fine in areas, but no matter how strong my signal is i still can't send/receive text messages.

well i don't know for sure that changing the radio will make any difference but it might help. you're having that trouble just with the sms huh? and always only in those areas?
Yeah it seems touch and go, in some places it refuses to work, but in others, such as my home it works flawlessly. It even worked on the freeway on the way to Canada, and even in Canada on Roger's network. I tried calling T-Mobile and they thought it was weird how it works in some areas but not others.

that does seem very odd. hopefully the radio change helps, otherwise you'll have to find someone wiser than me to help you, or just chalk it up to a network glitch. good luck

Please make a follow-up post to let us know what your findings are. It's an interesting problem you're having, and your data could be very useful for this and other issues!
So far tried a number of different radios and still haven't fixed the problem, but i've singled out the problem as the Phone, as i tried texting in places where i couldn't with my Tilt, on 2 different phones, one being the Tmobile Wing and they went through with no problems.
I'm gonna try Dutty's 6.1 rom and see if that changes anything, i'm pretty much trying anything that works now.

So just to be clear, when you use an unlocked Tilt on T-Mobile's network, you have difficulty receiving text messages. But when you put your SIM into a T-Mobile phone (Wing), text messages come through fine? If I understood your posts correctly, and my summarization is accurate, then it sound to me as if the Tilt is having problems accessing data services when its roaming off T-Mobile's network.
I would make a note of 3-5 specific areas where you have problems with SMS (ie 300 Block of N Maple Ave), and then call T-Mobile and ask them where their closest cell tower(s) is/are to those areas.
If my memory serves correct, T-Mobile uses GSM 1800/1900 in the US, but AT&T is still mostly 850/1900, and the Tilt may have issues receiving SMS messages while on a GSM 850 tower. You mentioned that the phone worked in Canada on the Rogers network, maybe they are on 1800/1900. Can someone from Canada confirm this last part??
These are just some thoughts of mine as I mindlessly watch TV, so who knows, I could be entirely wrong...

Hmmm interesting, now if i informed T-Mobile of this problem is there any way to remedy it without having to go back on a Tmobile phone?
is your tilt set to text through gprs or gsm? that might make the difference..

If it is an issue with GSM 850, then you may be stuck with running cooked ROMs based off of AT&T originals since their network still supports this frequency. To my knowledge there are no WM 6.1 ROMs with an AT&T base currently available.
It could also be a hardware issue... The section of flash memory on your device that stores the radio could have bad sectors (GSLEON3 would be someone who may be able to help you check this).
How did you come to get the Tilt? If you know someone with AT&T service, you can have them put their SIM in and then call AT&T Warranty and get the phone replaced under the 1 year warranty.
EDIT-
Second thought... Have you tried to force the phone into 1800/1900 GSM through the Band Settings tab under Settings --> Personal --> Phone --> Band ?
Currently it's set as GSM, do you think i should change it to GPRS?

Hmm i didn't even think to check their, i'm going to try it right now and report back.
EDIT- So should i be setting it at GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100) or GSM(1900+850)+UTMS(1900+850)?
WOW, Finally, thanks everyone for help but forcing the phone into the GSM 1800 band worked now i can finally fully enjoy my Tilt, Thanks once again!
Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

Ive installed stock HTC ROM. And its going again.
One question. Are you using Opera Mini maybe?

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me

I didn't tried asking AT&T for a new sim card. but I will call them to change the sim card. Does anybody know how to disable the 3G function?
Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.
