anyone know a good app that would back up my contacts with pictures and all emails? i wanna backup my contacts with all information attached on regular basis.. any suggestions?
I don't know if you'll need something specific for syncing pics and contacts, but I use Sprite Backup and I've had nothing but positive results with it on both my old 6315 and my Qtek (WM5 & 6). It's a bit expensive, but I don't think HP uses Sprite as its OEM backup software for nothing.
JMHO
I use SPB Backup and it work fine. Almost like doing an image of your pocket pc. Once I had to hard reset and and everything was reformatted so I lost all my contacts and programs. Hit the exe file that spb backup made and after about 10 mins, everything was back to normal. Didn't have to resinstall anything
S-K-Tools is enough..
i like the suggestions.. i will be looking into it.. SPB Backup sounds interesting.
If you are on a WM6 ROM make sure you test things out. I haven't used it, but I've heard people say that Sprite Backup (while a really nice program) has issues with restores on WM6 (and on some roms, it just doesn't work).
I've been using SPB backup (will look at paying for it this week) with no problems on AKU3.3 and now WM6 MBE.
SPB
SPB backup works perfectly with WM6 (even differnt ROMs). I made a backup .exe with SPB while on Orwell and then flashed to MB. I did not think the old backup exe would work, but it did and restored most of my contacts, settings, calender and applications back. Some apps did not work but many did.
On the same ROM, I have had perfect results.
I've had no problems with Sprite switching contacts and documents from WM5 to Crossbow. The self-restoring backup files work like a charm and only miss one file when restoring WM6. The file is non-essential.

1) anyone out there tried SPB Backup to restore an old ROM after a WM6 flash??
2) Whats the story with some SPB Applications causing problems in WM6, in particular, does SPD Diary, Mobile shell or Phone Suite cause problems.
I know that some of these questions have probably been answered somewhere, but please be patient. Searching through all those threads for answers can take a long time.
You can't restore an older ROM with a backup application, just like you wouldn't be able to use old Win XP system restores on Vista.
There are options to restore some registry entried after a ROM change, but for the most part they are unreliable, or cause hang-ups.
With regard to SpB Applications- a lot seems to depend on the combinations loaded. I've used Phone Suite, Diary and Mobile Shell together on a succession of WM6 ROMs with no bother- admittedly there is an initial memory leak, but it settles down after a few hours and is then stable on my device. Other have seen much greater instability for some reason.
I have tried the spb software on several WMs. At the beginning I was really impressed with what they offer, how they look and feel and how much different they make the phone. In the process though I realised that they consume a lot of memory, (both storage and rom) and they cause severeal problems in other functions such as the Bluetooth, the today plugin, the wifi, e-mails.etc.....
Now I only use SPB Weather and nothing else (with LVSW Latest ROM) and this is only because it has a template where I can place the local weather of the area I leave, believe me if I find something else, I will do so....
On WM5:
No problems whatsoever with any of the Spb softwares... Except PocketPlus which also under WM5 has a (though small) memory leak.
On WM6:
Huge memoryleaks (which indeed seem to settle around 18 megs free) with most applications; aspecialy with PocketPlus. Phonesuit seems to be the only app written for WM6 as well; and is the only troublefree app.
In terms of functionality and looks, the Spb software is top-notch! On the coding side however, they could have made it a little less memory- and resources-consuming...
But PocketPlus, PhoneSuit and Weather are that much important to me, that i switched back to WM5 this week, to have it all back troublefree.
My 2 cents...
Hi All
As I bought my TyTn II second hand and it came with out any backup software, could one of you kind people out there suggest what backup software is best. Free would be preferrable but not essential.
Thanks in anticipation.
Either SPB Backup or Sprite Backup.
I use SPB. Does a nice full backup of everything, including settings etc. Sprite does as well.
Mike
Thanks will give them a spin
be careful what you backup especially if you have problems since restoring a backup could reinstall the problem and you'll be back to where you started.it's advised to install everything u need, make all adjustments and set everything up then backup before tampering with things that could lead to problems
Hi all,
I've googled a bit for this, but can't find a decent answer. What I'm looking for is a way to back up not just my contacts etc, but also settings, installed programs and the like, that will work across an OS upgrade to WM6.1
Basically I'm running an Orange WM6.0 ROM, and want to upgrade, but don't want to have to reinstall all my various programs, connection settings, SMSs etc etc.
Spb backup now claims that it works across ROM upgrades - does that stretch to OS upgrades? Any other way of doing it?
You need a program that will do a full system backup. I used to use Sprite and have recently switched to SPB and it really works wonders.
mmm... I looked in more detail and it looks like spb doesn't work when you upgrade the ROM... what it can actually do is a system restore. Any other ideas?
they're all really predicated on restoring things based on the same rom or saving you from a hard reset. nothing is going to plug back your installed programs, or else projects like the SASHIMI to sleuth's SDconfig would have no point.
there are programs like PIMbackup that will save contacts and the like, but nothing will bring force and upgraded rom to look and work exactly like a previously fully-installed-to-your-liking rom

Not true. It's not recommended but it doesn't mean that it can't be done. I just upgraded to another ROM and pulled a backup from a previous ROM and used the "ROM upgrade option" which worked great.
Fair point bravo; I was really wondering whether it was possible to (for example) save the connection settings to avoid me having to go through that palaver again. SMS's and outlook data are saved by most programs; and I can reinstall most other programs without too much difficulty.
Not to worry - thanks for the help
Hi everybody
I have upgraded to the official HTC WM 6.1 ROM... and I did not like that much.
naturally I wanted to change to another ROM, so I opened PIM Backup 2.8, and tried to create a backup of my contacts and SMSs ...
the Problem is the is NO "NEXT" button...
I can't complete the backup process...
and I don't want to risk using ActiveSync... I had all my contacts deleted once because of it.
PIM backup works in restoring info.. but I can't get it to backup
I have been searching the forum for the last three days to find a solution...but digging in through 94 pages of the same topic gave me nothing but headaches
I might have missed something....if so... Please share with me...
thanks in advance
P.S: I found that the device became a bit unresponsive after restoring my contacts ans SMS using PIM backup on WM 6.1, does anybody have something like that?
I could be talking out of my **** (wouldn't be the first time ), but I seem to remember reading somewhere on the forum that you need to disable the Threaded SMS before running PIM backup - assuming you've left it "ON" which is the default for WM6.1?? You can use Schaps' Advanced Config to disable it.
PIM backup works on my WM6.1 ROM (Garmin.DK.3 - Threaded SMS turned off) - have you tried just ticking the Contacts and not the Messages to see if the Next button is enabled then??
Mark.
yeah, I have tried that before, and it did not work for me
I'll try search the registry and delete anything related to PIM Backup... then use it again...
BTW, I love your signature
I just updated my Tilt to 6.1 and found out after I did that the Sprint backup that comes with the Tilt has to be upgraded. I had to hard reset my phone and start over. You can get the newer version from HTC for free as an upgrade. The problem I had was with the Tilt saying my email accounts were locked and none of the fixes would work, but I read other post about other problems as well.
I'm using HyperDragon III pro ROM, and the problem is still there...
any ideas?

Have you posted on the PIMbackup thread (here) - if not, you could try that?? If you have, and you've got no (satisfactory) response, you could always email Fred - DotFred - via his website.
Not wishing to cast aspersions, but, have you gone down the RTFM route - the PIMbackup user guide is on www.dotfred.net if you haven't already got it.
One last thing.....you could check out the tutorial from @scotchua's signature (link here) - which suggest that PowerSMS may also work. There's a 14-day unrestricted trial on the website here.
That's me all out of ideas - hope this lot gets you where you wanna be
Mark.
Hi all. I am about to install the official WM 6.1 upgrade on the Kaiser of my uncle. Since we don't want to lose contacts and messages, I was thinking of using Sprite Backup to restore them after the upgrade. The question is: will this work? I suppose it may not, since WM 6.1 may use a different format to store messages.
Please reply as fast as possible. Thanks!
EDIT: I have found PIM Backup in the FAQ, which should work. In any case can you confirm that?

I found that sprite back up, backs up everything, including system settings and 6.0 settings which are not compatible with 6.1. I found myself jumping through hoops to pick and choose info out of sprite back up to restore.
If it is just contacts and messages , I found that PIM backup was a much easier route to work with. It works great with the Kaiser.
Ok, I'm going to try with PIM Backup. Thanks!
Make sure to have the latest Sprite Backup version and use "Upgrade Mode" in the Sprite Backup 'Restore' options (see help file).

I have found out that my uncle had all contacts stored on the SIM card (aaaargh!) and just something like 15 SMSs (and none of them really important), no appointments on the calendar, no activities, no documents, and just a few notes and photos stored in the memory card, so actually there was almost nothing to back up. PIM backup was more than enough.
In any case thank you too.
And before someone tells me, yes, I know that this is like owning a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce and then driving only in the 1st gear.

Ha , I have had my Tilt for more than a year, it is sim/cid unlocked, running Hyperdragon III Raphael . I have games ,photos, videos, appointments , tasks , threaded sms and over 300 contacts, and I use PIM backup when I re flash because it is simply a good back up app. I have never lost anything.
I meant that owning a Kaiser and having no Outlook contacts, no documents, two 3rd party apps (TomTom - included - and Opera Mobile, installed by me) is like owning a Rolls Royce and driving in the 1st gear, not using PIM backup. For such an usage any 30 € LG phone is enough. Sorry for not being clear.

LOL, Owning a Rolls Royce to drive back and forth to the grocery. just means you have class and good taste. ( and maybe too much money )
Well he's not super-rich but I assume he had enough money for getting it without planning it months or years before. That's probably because he's married but with no children... And yes, in any case he has good taste.
