Which is the best UK operator? - Off-topic

Hi all,
I'm due for and upgrade soon and I was wondering what you think of your operator. Prices / Customer service and support / Network coverage etc.
EDIT-My original reason for this thread is below. I took the risk of going with Orange today and got a Trinity
I'm considering a Trinity (only on Orange atm) or a Hermes (on o2, T-Mobile and Vodafone)
I prefer to look of the Trinity (bigger storage card, size, cheaper and GPS) but I view Orange as a bad point, but the Hermes has more support and roms here and is available with my current operator - o2, who I plan to bribe with 'give a free phone and a better contract, or I'll go to t-mobile or vodafone.' Anyone had any luck doing that?

reliability- vodafone
best deals - t-mobile
t-mobile wins

Do you know if any of the UK providers offer unlimited internet connection (without the stupid 'fair use' policy)? I mean, really unlimited like usual broadband?

How much are you planning on using? I find it hard to get anywhere close to the 1GB fair use "limit" on standard Web n Walk.
Unless you plan on doing a lot of streaming video, in which case you should get the Web n Walk pro which has a 10Gb ceiling, you will find it hard to download a lot on a pocket pc.

bbobeckyj, I tried the same 'bribe' but it got me nowhere. I have always been on O2, but might have to switch to Vodafone because they have much better contracts that suit my needs for my XDA Mini S. Vodafon are bringing out a new internet extra as well soon, so I'm going to wait until then.

Well guys and gals I successfully ported across to t-mobile from O2....the data charges are just scandalous on O2.
Web-n-walk and U-Fix 25....nice
HSDPA activated already according to the woman at t-mobile and i can verify it was....just watched the latest BBC News feed without a hitch!.
NICE

I was thinking of using skype a lot actually. For that, I think definitely 1 GB limit will be crossed fairly easily. But for that also need a fast connection. Will look into all this when about to get new contract near end August.
Midget1990: I didn't know that usual broadband is also capped! I have NTL and I download easily something like 20 to 40 gigs a month, which sometimes increases and sometimes decreases... So far never faced any caps, and got this connection just for that fact that it was 'really' unlimited, even if the speed was just 2 Mbps.

Just so you know, t-mobiles usage policy doesnt allow skype...you have to use the web-n-walk pro for that.

Thanks for that!!!
You just potentially saved me spending a lot over nothing.
Now all that's left is to find someone who does allow unlimited usage and VOIP. I think I'm living in dreamworld

I don't really want to pay loads for a contract, but it looks like the cheapest t-mobile do is about £30 . Which would you say is better out of web n walk and flext?
EDIT: Just looked at flext 20 and it looks perfect for me. (Mobile internet (t-zones, WAP or web'n'walk) charges
Browsing costs 0.73p per KB, a maximum charge of £1 per day no matter how much you browse the internet on your mobile phone.)
Please could somebody say though, where would the £1 for the internet come from, because the £34 you get to spend a month just says that you use it on calls and texts. Does it come from somewhere else? (Never been on a contract before)

Well all i can say is im using flext 25 with web-n-walk 18.....that works out at 32.50 a month..........unlimited internet (obviously fair use...but a gig is MASSIVE for a pda)
the flext thing has 60 quid of allowance, works out at (if you go half for text and half for calls)
300 texts
150 minutes (anytime,anywhere(uk) )
plus free weekend calls to ANY uk number (not including premium or 08 numbers)

Youd get much more out of the flext + web-n-walk 25, but i really wanted to pay the cheapest option. I hate it when they put a few quid in between, but boost the allowance by almost double.

Yer ive noticed that...but the free weekend calls must be worth a HELL of alot.....think thats a limited time offer aswell??
Which have you looked at then?

I was gonna go with flext 20 + web-n-walk.
I can't see when the offer ends, I can't actually start the contract now so was going to in a month or so.

WnW MAX allows skype, its basicly everything like home Broadband but with 10gb fair usage, you can go over but if you go over say 3months in a row they may contact you and ask you to reduce it, allthou 10gb for a PDA is a hell of a lot, unless you plan on using it as a modem a lot of the time 10gb should do.
if you will be using it as a modem all the time then the t-mobile usb modem might be a better option as that allows unlimtied internet - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/.../internet-on-the-move/internet-on-your-laptop
Regards

I wish that t-mobile did a cheaper flext and web-n-walk. I only really want to spend £20 a month.

Orange - best customer service, talk 7 data plans ok, do the Trinity on very good deals if you shop around
T mobile - plans excellent if you want flexibility or if you download a lot.
O2 - customerservice absolute ****, plans ok, once the best range of PDA's - now limited
Vodafone - havnt a clue
Really depends on deal your offered. Orange clinched it for me at last upgrade - 7 months free line rental and a free trinity with GPS on a 12 month contract.

One thing to note about t-mobile wnw.
They are blocking IRC/MSN etc... over GPRS, some users have reported those apps are working correctly however recently signed up customers seem to have ports blocked??
Id be interested to know if anyone can use IRC over wnw....if so what GPRS settings are you using?

Short answer - no. I've been with Genie and then O2 for many years, and the one thing that's happened in that time is handset and contracts have become more expensive. I rang up a while ago to try and get a new XDA, and they wanted to put me on a £35+ contract and I would still have to pay something for a (decent) phone.
What O2 are good at (for me at least) is giving you dirt cheap contracts. For instance I got a 1 year contract of £20 a month reduced to £10 a month, then £100 cash back for not taking a phone. So I'm paying £20 for a whole year for Online Offpeak 300 (or whatever the hell it is). Even the O2 rep suggested I just get an XDA off Ebay.

I am Paying 15 dolars for ATT tilt internet, starting today :)

for the last 12 months I have been paying 30$ for my ATT Tilt internet, because on the internet I couldn't add the cheap 15 version of medianet. and on the phone they said because I have a pda I have to have a PDA plan which is 30$ min.. well today I tried a different method. called and asked if I could get the 15$ internet and she said if I updated my phone on my account. meaning if I give them a different IMei number other than a PDA to add it to my account than they can add the 15$ plan..so I had an extra Sony ericson flipphone. I just told her I wanna use my Sony phone and add it to my account. I did it she put me on 15$ plan. she said it wouldn't work on the tilt...well guess what? it is the same internet on my Tilt..I am in los angeles..I have HSDPA all the time..speed is the same..it is plain old PDA plan..it is I think to supsidy the costs of the PDA phones, they are doing it to make more profit..on my account it is showing now i am using a regular phone...and if something happens to my Tilt, she said i could update my account to tilt so I can return for warraty changes..I can't believe I have been paying double for my internet for no reason...hope it helps some of the people who didn't now about this..Good luck..

yes.i am talking about internet.
I have always known this, i used the media net on my old palm treo. I'm paying $30 a month now since i got my tilt.
EDIT: this below doesn't seem to work for everyone...
However, for you brave souls. There is a way around it, you can add the $15 plan on their website. (of course if you do this, log in and cancel your current PDA plan)
Do not log in, stay logged out
Go to Shop/Features/View All
Click Media Net Unlimited, "current customers purchase here"
And then follow the steps.
Not many people know about that, you can't add it if your logged in, because it recognizes what phone you have.

well... i understand that you are talking about internet, but i don't understand if this is unlimited data or you have some limitations (like amount of data, port restrictions,...).
not that this is important to me since i don't live near US or at&t, but i was just wondering because here in croatia we pay:
- 391kn (85$) unlimited data (flat)
- 291kn (63$) 3GB
- 191kn (41$) 1GB
- 91kn (20$) 512MB
so if you pay 15$ for unlimited data i just don't know what to say. not to mention average monthly pay here in croatia being way below 1000$.
It's unlimited (up to 5gb). I have been using it for months now and have had zero problems. People claim that if you exceed 5gb of data usage, AT&T will get suspicious.

i can't believe you guys pay that much over there. it is for unlimited..about ATT being suspicious if we pass 5gb is not so much what happens. i use so much every month. they don't care about it. there are enough people paying double anyways. if it is unlimited it doesn't matter wich phone u use..plus they wil blame us with what? nothing. so yes i wil pay 15 dollars a month for unlimited internet. ohh i didn't know about buying it without logging in..it is good to know.
i just called att and updated my plann, they said it would take in effect immediately but i will wait till tomorrow morning to see for sure.
thanks a lot for the tip guys saved a bunch of money on my bill
i use to have $30 unlimited PDA for 2 phone so that means $60 total, now its $15 unlimited internet each, for 2 phone so thats $30 total
lol
haha thats great! i dont have a unlimited data plan because of the $30 price. its ridiculous
now i might consider doing this trick to get that $15 plan.
thanks
just hopefully no att representatives are viewing this forum.
they also have a "media max 200" plan which gives you the $15 unlimited data plan plus 200 text messeges for and additional $5. So your total a month would be $20. Have done that after reading a thread back in December time frame. Currently in Peru on Vacation but when i get back in Sept. I will reactivate the media max 200.
also i have tried the internet sharing and no suspicion with ATT. So i love it.
Sheesh, that's quite a vacation.
Fwiw, for years i've used media max unlimited (since I had a wizard) and i've never had a problem.

I think AT&T insists on the $30 plan because it's their way of offsetting the cost of the phone. Most customers will obtain the Kaiser from the operator rather than an OEM HTC model. And because AT&T discounts the phone heavily, they have to build in a way to get the phone to a price point that most customers will want to pay. They write it into a contract so that they can recover the expense of the discount they offered you when you bought the phone.
In my case, I had the MEdia Max bundle for my RAZR, so when I got my TyTNII it carried over. But at least one workaround would be to borrow a friend's phone, put your SIM in that phone, go online to change your plan and then put the SIM back into your phone. Many times the phone will identify itself to the network so you don't even have to manually change it.
Welcome to about a year ago everyone.

Nah, it's simply because PDAs use data connections much much more than non-PDA phones. Just wait until the day after tomorrow when the iPhone 3G starts hitting the streets, I expect quite a bit more of att's 3G bandwidth will be in use.
This has been known for months and discussion of this deal is in many threads.
yup, I remember when I first did this on my 8125/wizard... Only thing you might wanna watch for is the IMEI sweeps that I'm sure they don't do intentionally... I've had mine set up for my old 551, but mysteriously it will change in the OLAM to my 8525... and now with my Tilt as well... They've never changed my bill, or sent me a notice, but they know what everyones doing...

Amazing Orange Deal

Dolphin 35, an 18 month contract, £35 a month for 18 months with the option of 5 months free. That brings the total cost to £455, only £55 more than the Sim free cost of the phone and you get unlimited web browsing and unlimited texts and 600 minutes.
Orange may have a poor reputation, but that deal is unbelievably good.
See here: http://www.mobiles.co.uk/orange-htc-touch-diamond.html#MobilePhoneTariffs
Edit: My mistake, there's no unlimited data with that deal. It looks like you have to buy through orange for unlimited data which comes to a total of £540, £90 quid more. Still not bad though.
The standard warning applies with the above offers and all like it. You are likely to not get that money due to obscure overcomplicated rules on redeeming the cashback, normally involving goats, virgins, and lunar eclipses.
It's been scientifically proven that people too evil to be a seal-clubber or second-hand car salesman go on to run discount phone websites.
The original deal direct from Orange is still good though. In fact, it's the one I signed up for earlier.
Or you could get all that and a free ipod or projector or whatever you want, done it with my last phone and an xbox 360 and it all worked fine.

unlimited landline calls

this was direct from orange....no funny middle men

I suspect you can get it for free on the £25pm but I wanted unlimited web.

Oranges' deals are not that good at all.
First of all 18 month contracts for any WM Device enthusist are terrible. You want to try the new forthcoming WM7 HTC devices, you will want a 12 month deal.
Secondly Orange's unlimited data isnt unlimited. Its a 500MB fair use policy (too little) that - according to their website (and there has been some confusion about this) is limited to 2 months. After 2 months, you pay for the data package.
You need to check if these 3rd party dealers are giving the unlimited mobile data. I just ordered with M2YD on a Dolphin 35 18 month contract, free handset and this DOES include the unlimited mobile browing (confirmed with M2YD and Orange CS on the phone). £35 per month with £210 back on redemption and £55 cashback with quidco. This means my total cost for the 18months will be £365
Me too
I've ordered from m2yd.
Dolphin 35 .... £210 cashback, unlimited internet and texts. £55 back from www.quidco.com
In all, over 18 months it will cost me £20.28 per month
Best deal currently available over 18 months ... I think I've searched them all!

The contract may be 18 months but i was simply looking at the total cost. As in, if a phone comes out in 12 months that you want, buy that also. There's nothing to stop you running two contracts concurrently. If you've seen a better deal from another network, post it, just because it's an 18 month deal doesn't make it bad.
Also, show me a network that does unlimited data that doesn't have a fair usage policy? Hell, every ISP has one, why wouldn't a phone network who has to send data over a massive infrastructure of cell towers
Btw, im not an Orange fan, im a Tmobile fan, no bias here.
I don't worry about the 18 months thing. For heavily subsidied expensive phones, it often works out that the TCO over 18 months is just a few more £ than over 12 months.
Way back when I got my Wizard with Vodafone, the 18 month contract was about £20 more than with a 12 month contract. I still got my Vario II 12 months later, but then had a spare contract phone for 6 months for £20.
As for the whole "unlimited" thing, it's not just in regards to data, they also wrap "unlimite texts" etc. in similar weasel words. I'm surprised that they're all allowed to get away with it still. It's pure false advertising, and they all do it.

sounds like bias to me.
At least T Mobile offer 1GB fair use. 500MB is way too limited.
Also with T's web n walk plus, you get free GLOBAL T Mobile hotspot access.
Also T have a brilliant HSDPA network. How extensive is Oranges?
Also with orange - you seen that cost to non orange mobiles outside of your air time?
As for contract length.. let me put it this way..
12 months ago I bought a brand new HTC Touch.
Slightly OT, but does the Orange unlimited internet allow for using the phone as a modem? Is it unlimited internet or unlimited data?
Likewise does it allow for VOIP?
I can see how Opera will quickly eat into the data instead of pocket IE and its cut down pages
Back on topic, Orange allow a downgrade to the next lower tariff after 9(?) months -so a bit more saving. Not sure if this impacts on the cashback offer though

The unlimited package on orange does not allow tethering or VOIP...
Have done quite a bit of VOIP over 3G with Skype using an Orange 250mb data plan with my old Tytn 2 and never got charged for it, when I check my usage all it shows is I used a few megs, done that for months
Not tried tethering though as I have no need to.
They may say we don't allow you to do it but doesn't mean they banned it
Sorry, whats tethering?

There's no discernable customisation to the interface and a very discreet orange badge on the rear cover.

Orange unlimted mobile browsing confusion

Ok im sure every1's heard about oranges new unlimited browsing offer;
they provide free unlimted mobile browsing on all 18 month and £35+ pay monthly contracts
has any one got more information on this as i cant dig up anything other then a whole lot of crap and dirt.
does this free unlimited bundle provide the same fair usage policy as the £7.50 unlimited mobile browsing or is it different?
on this link
http://www1.orange.co.uk/entertainment/OrangeWorld/terms.php
it says "The Offer provides 250 MB data browsing for £7.50 per month"
while on this link
http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/unlimited_bundles_terms.html
it says "The Offers are subject at all times to a fair usage policy of 3000 minutes or texts (as appropriate) each month or 500MB data per month"
im sure alot of other people are confused with orange, iv called their customer support team up many times and nearly all of them seem ignorant regarding thier "Unlimited" mobile browsing bundles.
If you get a 18 month contract with a mobile phone on a deal that is £35 or more excluding the £5 online discount that's presently avalible then you get an free 'unlimited' bundle for data that has a fair use cap of 500mb however if you get a deal less then then £35 then you can still buy an 'unlimited' bundle for an extra £7.50 a month on top of your standard contract that has a fair use cap of 250mb.
You can't of course get the free 'unlimited' bundle of 500mb and pay an extra £7.50 to get an extra 250mb, least not that I know off, as your not buying 500mb of data but unlimited data.
It should be noted also that with either of the deals Instant Messaging is deemed an abuse of service as is VoIP, YouTube (or any video not on Oranges mobile site) or using you mobile as an internet sharing device. As to how easy it is for Orange to pick up on your use, how often they do, etc, I really don't know.
Other networks seem to have better terms, Three almost seems to promote the things Orange bans and apparently Three use Orange's 2G where they don't have there own 3G coverage!
I'm on PAYG with Orange, and apart from there Orange Wendsday I'm not sure why I'm still with them. :-(
my contract with orange expires in february and i just baught a touch diamond,
i upgraded my plan to one with free unlimited mobile browsing
its a bit stupid how orange promotes htc's touch diamond, yet their data bundles and stupid restrictions really make the phone ineffective in fulfiling its marketed purpose and functions.
The diamond has a youtube player, yet where not allowed to use it, when my contract expires im going to move to o2

why not use a real htc or custom rom?
i am using a custom rom on htc diamond, iv got the unlimited package on my line now, its active, when i called customer services yesterday they said 250mb, i called them this morning and they said 500mb, i hope they dont mess me about and charge me extra once iv gone over 250mb
what I would do is call once again to confirm and take down the persons name and ext. just incase there are any comebacks. I did query what would happed in if i exceeded fair usuage policy i was informed i will not be charged but will be advised to control my usuage otherwise services will be restricted.
iv called them again and now they go its 250mb, so last night they said 250, this morning they said 500, and now they just said 250, i gave the woman i was speaking to, the link that says i get 500mb, i asked for the package in august during their promotion, and the link clearly says 500mb but the woman said to me that this link may not be a real orange website because it starts with www1.
but shes chatting nonsence, as it is the real orange website.
she goes to me its 250mb but shes gona look into the link i gave her to find out what it is and give me a call back tonight, so i will keep u lot updated.
Orange really need to fix up
The www1 remark is outter nonsence! URL's work backwards, so it's .co.uk first, then orange then www1. Orange own anything *.orange.co.uk ! It's the same as how xda-developers.com is owned and uses forum.xda-developers.com and wiki.xda-developers.com etc, surely this is common knowledge to someone who's suppose to give advice at Orange?

Slingbox TV and a Vodafone Kaiser...

Hi...
Im not sure in which section to post this question but...
I'd really like to be able to watch TV on my handset and I'm tempted to buy a Slingbox and hook it up to my Sky+, as the prices for this hardware have dropped to around £50.
The thing that worries me is any charges Vodafone might make for data transfer charges.
On another forum Ive seen a Vodafone user claim that he doesn't get any extra charges using his handset to receive TV via Slingbox using 3G, but I'm skeptical.
I know that using WiFi would incur no costs, but what about 3G & HSDPA...
Do any forum members have first hand experience of using Slingbox on the Vodafone network ?
If so, are you charged for doing so, if you are, how much do you end up paying ?
BTW, I'm on the £7.50 Mobile Internet Plan.
TIA,
Mark.
I would assume that they have a data paackage you can purchase that would make using data free.
Yeah, I have an allowance of 500Mb a month which cost's me £7.50 a month, which isn't much, I'm guessing this will allow me to watch about 8 hours of TV a month - and the cost for exceeding this amount is high.
Do any Vodafone UK customers have experience of using Slingbox on their mobile ?
M.
Data packages are something you have to check for yourself, try to get the maximum allowance for the least price (obvious really when you think about it!!)
Thing you have to take into account is, no matter WHAT package suppliers say about bandwith, it is down to how many users are on the cell at the same time as YOU!! I have been on HSDPA at an exhibition site and got a slower connection that in Scotland on a basic GPRS connection. Again, logical when you think about it!! So check the web, ask around and see who really does give you the best connection/cost.
As to Sling...
I have a Slingbox basic (cheap one from PC World) on an extra Sky box in my UK home with the extra room package at just 10 quid (make sure its connected to the phoneline at the Skybox or they disconn you!) and use it on PC and mobile here in UAE.
Both work great so it's a good investment on that score.

I'm moving to Berlin, advice needed

I'm going to move to Berlin to study German for 9 months, naturallly i have lots of doubts, i'd really appreciate your help:
1. The monthly fee for the housing (offered by the German course) is 800 $, which is little steep for me, a friend told me you can rent an apartment for 400 $ a month, is this true? Where should i look?
2. Which internet provider can you recommend? I have only read about Alice and "1 and 1" (which supposedly sucks) , i use a lot a bandwidth a month, i download and stream movies, download music, use dropbox with my friends , id say i use about 40-50 gb a month, i dont want to be put in a black list, or have my intern
Anyone?

Doesn't look like it. I guess you've tried google?

If it helps, Vodafone are good in the UK, However I think tmobile are slightly cheaper
I'm from germany and my provider fyve ( its a prepaid card and i pay 10 euro for an internet flat with 500 mb highspeed internet, the price per minute and per sms is 9 cent) it uses the vodafone network its great and i've got nearly everywhere 3g or hsdpa but i think t mobile is as good as vodafone
But never take o2 its so bad
I keep reading O2 is crap, so its out my list already
I cannot post links jet but google smartmobil
Look at this , there you have 100 hundred minutes free 100 sms free and you got an internet flat for 10 euros and it uses the vodafone network and you can cancel it whenever you want

I only need the plan, i already have a phone, right now i pretty much settled on vodafone it's the adsl provider i'm still not sure about , by the way another doubts have surfaced
1. Vodafone offers a "free" landline but what is it exactly ? they give you a "free" landline and you can have unlimited calls to it? or you can call have unlimited calls to vodafone landlines?
2. What's this so called "Your Online Advantage 24 x 5 € credit"
3. Students discount? With this they'll chop 10 euros a month from the price? , what do i need in order to get this?
3. 30 euros for an installation fee? what? 30 euros just for giving me a sim card?
Minimum contract (without a phone) 24 months? Damn companies LOVE contracts, dont they?

Give me the link and i explain it to you
And yes there is a student reduction i think you have to show them on which university you study
And what do you think of germany ?! here are as much skinheads as in the us ...
Don't mention the war.

Check out super flat internet plus

and

I don't pay that much attention to the reports about racism, xenofobia, those things happen in almost every country!

So the super flat internet plus includes a flatrate TO every german landline network
Also a flatrate to the german vodafone network
Then it has a internet flatrate with 500 mb highspeed internet with maximum 7.2 mbits
Then you got 3000 free sms ( its called sms flatrate but at vodafone its just 3000 free sms you can see it if you go to details )
And you are allowed to do tethering and VoiP ( thats quite nice i dont know an other plan which allows VoiP)
If you are a new customer at vodafone you get a flat in another german mobil network for free
If you buy this plan online they give you every month 5 euro so as a consequence of that its 5 euro cheaper every month so its 44,95 every month
Then you can choose the student reduction but you have to look if it worths it.
So i hope i helped you
The other link guides me to the main website of vodafone so there is no plan i can explain to you

Thanks for taking the time!
3000 SMS is just enough for me, trust me , i sue whatsapp A LOT, tethering is kinda useless with just 500 mb , they should offer 2 gbs for that price, after 500 mb you only get "low" speeds which they don't specify, maybe 1 mbps
What do you mean i have to see if the students reduction is worth it? You think they might chop off some of the features of the plan?
Hey there...I'm from Germany too and HAVE to write something here in my opinion
First of all...the housings in towns with students living in it are much more expensive than others.
For example 50qm in my hometown costs about 300€ including the costs for electricity and radiation.
In a Studentcity it can be up to 800€...that's sad but true
As provider for Internet and Communication I prefer Unitiymedia 32Mbit (about 20€ per month)
My Mobile Provider is O2 for more about 10 years now (O2 Blue 100) Costs are about 20€ but I now that they have special prices for students
And by the way...I'm glad to see that there are some people out there who know that real Skinheads have nothing to do with the dumb, brown scum that crawls through our streets listening to Tekknomusic

Costs for radiation?
I have 2 choices for the German course:
DID Deutsch: Institut Berlin
Novalisstr. 12
Berlin, BE 10115
DE
ESL PROLOG - BERLIN
Hauptstraße 23/24
Berlin, BE D-10827
DE
I just checked Wikipedia and Berlin is quite small , only 891,85 km² so arriving late to the course shouldnt be a concern, can u recommend some districts? i have been told not to go to Tempelhof and Neukölln since people get robbed there, is that true?

No problem
yes vodafone is very expensive and i think the student reduction worths so try it but take a look at www.mobilcom-debitel.de or like i said www.sparhandy.de them are really cheaper
But you have to pay attention you said that you are in germany just for 9 months so the most plans have a minimum term of 24 months so look at this
If you have questions to another plan just give me the link i translate or explain it to you
