Its not something you can just wrap up into a cab and install. It has to be built into the system. Therefore, either way ,you'll have to flash the device. Why not flash from an SD Card?

Flashing the rom is not the issue and I do have access to a windows machine with activesync when necessary..the issue is my MDA is my primary internet source (edge connection) and I tether to my laptop which runs linux...all the WM6 rom's have removed the bluetooth dun profile and the usb connection is no longer recognized either ..in a nutshell unless you have better luck getting PAND to work under linux than I did, linux users HAVE to stay with WM5 till something changes in either linux or the rom's being provided.

new aku2 here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279908
so am i right in presuming that the gprs settings and phone settings are present in the rom? if not, how do we find them?
ALSO:
T-Mobile are releasing a rom update this month (ie this coming week!) so it might be worth looking at what they have done, not just for wifi fix but any other maintenence changes. Apparently they do alot of testing on their roms so there might be useful stuff there.
t-mobile gprs and wap settings are part of the extended rom. the 3 cabs files that begin CAB-Customization-...
i didnt include them as i'm on O2. This is more like a 'Qtek' version for the charmer, a universal version. doesnt include any operator specfic content.
looking forward to that update, hopefully its aku2, everyone else is releasing theres at the moment.
SDIO
What about SDIO drivers in this debranded OS?
so if i back up my current rom cabs and then install this, if it all goes pearshaped, i can relaod the origional and not end up with an expensive paperweight?
i wanna do the deed, but am scared as hell with it being my first PPC and only a few weeks old at that.
but anything to speed it up, its like im running windows or something.......
oh!
only way you could mess up is if you pull the plug or have a power cut! while uploading the new os. remember to backup all your contacts and stuff as you'll need to hard reset.
you can start all over again if it doesnt boot or something by using the install package on the t-mobile site
http://t-mobile.iris-global.com/download_manager_mda_com2.html
just go into the phones bootloader, with the phone off, hold down camera and plug in the sync cable until the 3 color boot screen comes up and run the install package to go back to factory.
It worked!!
Dear dave106 and all;
i tried your fantastic upgrade yesterday. This was my experience:
1- I works like charm!
2- you might find it easier to use Total commander to uncheck 'system' and 'read-only' in the properties of the windows folder on your charmer, before Unlocking CID (to avoid any error).
3- alternatively you might use Lockiwiz 2b from this forum to unlock and unlock CID first.
4- the ROM upgrade went fine, showed some error messages on the charmer screen (nothing to worry about) but did not indicate an end. I unplugged it after 20 minutes. It rebooted on itself et voila, it was up and running.
5- Changing the boot scrren went very smoothly.
6- I noted that the T-mobile customization (after the new config.txt) did not install at all. I had to manually install the CAB listed in the config.txt file to reload the MMS and GPRS settings.
But now my charmer has no T-mobile crap on it...
However, i did not notice any dramatic change in speed....
Ill check your unbraded rom for wifi sdio capabilities over the next few days (on a 'just in case' basis). I'm just recovering from a totally borked pagefile on my main pc so ive been too busy to try as of yet.

Hi Faria!
Just to let you know that I've just contacted the guys at I-mate regarding this problem and they said there's already one version coming soon.
Hope it does not take so long!

RUU from Cingular
I can flash my phone with Vista, with the offical Cingular 2.25 (which uses RUU 2.5.2) ROM. When I replace the nk.nbf, it can't open the file. Maybe this helps. If anyone knows what the RUU looks for in the rom file, maybe we could fix it.
Did you tried tools than enable all buttons of an application ? (I've done than quite a long time ago and it worked) ?

Ok I see that you have a G4. Lokiwiz is a waste of your time since you have a G4.
Here is what you need to do:
Because you have a G4, you can't just flash a rom because of the DOC chip.
There are 3 ways I know of to flash a G4.
1. Download shelltools - install enablerapi.cab and cert_spcs.cab and reboot your device. connect with activesync and place the nk.nbf file of the rom of your choice in the shelltools directory and run shelltools and follow the directions in the readme. If you do it correctly, you will end up successfully flashing your device.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293480
2. Download SoftSPL and place the nk.nbf file of your choice in the RUU folder included and run SoftSPL and it is fully automated. It will call the RUU and your device will be flashed in about 7 minutes.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329147
3. Use the HardSPL(CID UNLOCK) and unlock your device prior to flashing. This will allow you to just flash roms at your leisure with no problems whatsoever from now on BUT it is still in developement so use at your own risk.

when it comes to add ons,I was reading on the Rom Kitchen thread and and I couldn't see much more that could be added to the rom that Faris V5's nbf file.it seems to be one of thee most comprehensive files that I have come across. the only issue is that it runs a bit slow but it cool.I might just need to do some memory management.
other than that I would recommend the file.
do you have any other recommendations?

I personally use the TNT.1437 TouchFlo and TNT.1437 Professional+HTC Home roms personally modified to have a 10MB page pool. They are quite fast and are almost 100% stable with only minor bugs that are barely noticible...

Yes, please.... speed it up for me. if there are any other applications (add ons) that you feel should be added to the nbf file then please add them.
i have already shared the nbf file with many guys at work. we would be grateful if you can assist.
one last thing, i noticed that there is a 3G icon under the comms manager. one of the guys said that we should not have any issues accessing 3G even if the phone didnt come with it. is it possible to use 3G on these phones?

Since a lot of people is interested in the idea of running Linux on a Wizard and i started discussing it in a thread not with that subject (check page 3 HERE) i decided to start a new one to see how the concept can grow.
What am i talking about you might say.
Well, it's what the title says: Running Linux from the DOC chip instead from an SD card on top of WinCE.
Well, technically it would still run from RAM (as it happens with WinCE) but the OS image would always be preserved on the DOC chip and every boot would load Linux from it to RAM.
All in all, it's basically the action of replacing the Windows Mobile by Linux, except if any technical detail is escaping me; but that's what i think this thread should be for.
mestrini
I'll start with a little background info...
When the SPL starts it applies security restrictions and, above all, it initializes the hardware to be ready for the OS. After things go fine with the hardware the SPL jumps to a ROM (DOC chip) address where the OS image is stored and is copied/mirrored into RAM (+-40 seconds boot).
It is from RAM that all the magic you see happens. The only times WinCE accesses the DOC is when needs to store persistent data like registry values and user data (in User Area).
The way Linux OS is being ran on Wizards currently is via 'Haret jump' which requires a working device running WinCE.
HaRET is capable of replacing WinCE with a Linux kernel. In order for this to work, one musthave a Linux kernel customized for the device. (For example, an HTC Universal kernel will not boot on an HTC Magician phone.) When trying to boot a kernel downloaded from the internet, please try to also locate the device specific booting instructions - most developers that publish kernels will also publish instructions (or even "boot bundles" that automate the boot).
In the simplest case, one can launch Linux by running the HaRET command:
boot
The above will cause HaRET to load a kernel from the file "kernel" into memory, shutdown critical hardware, and then jump into the kernel. During the process, HaRET will write status messages to the LCD screen.
Click to collapse
If, as i believe, the Linux drivers are loaded after the OS has started (or while it starts) we can use same HTC boot loaders since "all" they do is initialize the hardware and give the order to copy the OS to RAM.
What i purpose here is to write the Linux over Windows Mobile (same address if possible) to avoid using Haret and to have it permanently stored on the DOC chip.
A question rises here which is how the Linux stores permanent data???
To write the Linux to the DOC chip i think the available options are via RUU with 'bogus' nk.nbf or via a RAPI tool like WST while WinCE is running. The changes would be noted only after rebooting the device
Another thing that i believe it's an issue is the way Haret loads the kernel. Does it do anything in particular? Something that can be patched in a SPL? From the Haret link above i believe it must use the instruction 'boot' (at least) to load the kernel from the file "kernel" and this is where it should complicate things since it would require to patch the SPL to do the same thing. Can it be done? Only guys like Olipro can answer that...
So here it is. What say you?
Cheers

Please read this wiki page first ->

You generally should not care about weird HTC things like SPL. Writing the driver to control G3/G4 chip is the key issue here.

no release date yet but it will develop very fast...i'll keep you updated....all the best....
Don't forget to tell olipro to add SMS and Cellular Radio features they are most important without them Ubuntu Linux for Wizard would be not of much use and ask him one more thing, he shuld make a software that would run on WM and Linux both so that Data from WM could be backed up and Restored on Linux. I just cant wait to see how it looks, and it would be a great surprise if they launch a beta or anything on 3rg August you know y? Cause its my Birth Day.

any idea how where i can get the working .cab file or get to install or work this. as i really need msn messenger.

Did you check your device space.
Even if you install on SD, lots of files will go in the Windows directory.
You will need at least 3MB free space.

Its an old and buggy rom... I think is the better to upgrade for the first time... Helmi has made a great rom that time i tink the first release of wm6 here...
But is buggy and old upgrade the the new 6.5 or 6.1 builds... you will never have issues at installing programs.
