Microsoft Office 07 USB edition - Off-topic

i know this aint phone/PDA related but im at a loss to explain how this works.
i picked this up over the weekend via torrents thinking it would be full of viruses but turned out not only to be virus free but to work flawlessly.
did anyone else manage to get it? ive been able to run it on PCs running XP SP1 and XP SP2 both with a standard install of office 03.
the USB 07 seems to only load what it needs to into memory the really wierd part is it comes with 7 files with only one being 500 meg
MSTORE.EXE 21kb
EXCEL.EXE 35kb
WINWORD.EXE 53kb
OIS.EXE 36kb
POWERPNT.EXE 50kb
OFFDIAG.EXE 209kb
MSACCESS.EXE 531,148 kb
and yes ive done 2 virus scans with 2 different scanners LOL
any ideas?

Be interesting to see, i've found the torrent and am going to have a go this evening.
Perhaps its only the exe files that differ to a 2003 installation or is that far too simplistic a view?
Surely there have to be some features that don't work properly?

prehaps its a version that will work off a USB drive without being installed?
Imp

Office 2007 Basic lists its requirements as 1.5Gb HD Space, it would take a lot of work to thin this to 1/3 of the size and maintain functionality.
However....
I have tried this myself now, works on Vista Ultimate with office 2003 installed. Also ran it on XP sp2 with no office installed and also tried them both with no connection to the internet present and all apps ran fine.
Did you notice that it said powered by thinstall on startup.
Have a look at
http://www.thinstall.com/sales/pres...install.com/products/resources_get.php?aid=14
Appears that it is an up to date version of this.

I've just read and did a search around, there are definately some running wild in the net. Ok, even if they run nicely now, do you think there will be an expiry date on it making it invalid say .. tomorrow? anyway, i did a check on this 'thinstall' as well, it seems that they have OpenOffice in 100MB .. that's nice enough for me. I'm supporter of OpenOffice.

yeah i been using it for 3 days now with not many issues on serivce pack 2 XP. had a few funky errors but nothing that didnt occur more than once.
it has everything available even the million rows in excel and the few new formulas in excel and access.
its very nice if you cant use 07, microsoft should look at selling it on USB keys LOL!!
@ sparky yeah i did some googles and saw that one. was interesting that you tried it on a computer with no office on it, was talking with a friend who wanted to try that too.
still baffled by its size and power given the size of the proper version.
yeah open office is ok but its no office 07 with black interface LOL

Microsoft I thank you!

I've just installed Microsoft Vista and find it a very nice operating system.
For my phone I had to install the Vista version of ActiveSync, I paired up my phone with that prorgam and it worked flawlessly.
But what FU#[email protected]% idiot has made an option to overwrite the phone data with that of outlook WITHOUT asking a deletion approval.
When installing software on my Vista machine askes me several time if I'm sure.... But that louwsy program just deletes everything without even asking.
Fortunately, I was just a merely 250 contacts that I've completely lost since my backup was lost due to the Vista installation.....
Normally the contacts would be in the deleted messages box, but since I've turned of that option I completely lost everything...
BASTARDS !!!!!!
(Sorry for that.)
I'm going outside now and break something....
Hope that'll release my frustration..

hahaha
It happened to me several times cuz I always reflash my PDA and format my laptop.. I decided to save them in Microsoft's servers and add them to Messenger live contacts
When you pair your devices the MOBILE DEVICE CENTER is asking you how you want your data synchronized: replacing on mobile device, replacing on pc or combining! I guess you haven't paid attention! Even after you paired your devices you can change this options in the settings.
yikes, im sorry about that. Also happened to me not too long ago except on XP when I deleted the contacts on my phone. I resynced hoping that phone contacts would be restored, but instead stupid activesync deleted all the contacts off outlook even though AS was set to "replace items on device"!
Thankfully, all my contacts were moved to the "Deleted Items" folder, and I could restore them! (hit ctrl-6 when in outlook) I hope this helps.

Microsoft needs to make Vista Windows compatible.
After this happened to me twice I started to backup my contacts regularly with PIM Backup...

damn straight! best program i've ever used. by backing up to a memory card once/twice daily you cant really go 'wrong' as such!
now, if only it was a 'requirement' for all cooked roms!
sorry to hear about your loss. lol. i very nearly lost my ENTIRE MSN messenger contact list (comprising of some 400+ contacts) but luckily i had 'tried' WLM on my smartphone before hand and it had synced them to that!
WLM is weird in the only sense that it will delete from both your phone and from your messenger list!
go back to XP Pro.

Typically one should never upgrade a Micky$ OS until SP1 is released, XP and W2k are both great examples. My biggest complaints are USB and network speed when copying data... just today went back to XP on my Thinkpad... just SO much easier when dealing with PDA's... (more importantly, my version of Ghost Server won't live under Vista... that's a deal closer for me... and screw Virtual PC and such, no time or desire)
Here is My 2 cents worth:
Windows 95 was a huge improvement over Windows 3.1. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows 98 was just a suckier version of Windows 95.
Windows Millenium Edition ME totally sucked. I fell for it. They got my $100.00 ----- ripped me off.
However Windows XP really hummed. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows Vista is just a suckier version of Windows XP.
Windows Vista = ME2 Only this time they're Not getting my $100.00
Thats just my Opinion.
Stick with XP Pro...............................(I can hear Mac users saying "get a Mac")
Mac is not a solution - it limits just about anything you want to do with the computer. IMHO Win XP offers much more in terms of available software and hardware compatibility (even over Vista).
I agree Mac is Not an answer. I got a supervisor at work always telling me how much better a Mac is. I never agree with him.
My Laptop has a door on the side where you can slide out the HDD. I have 3 Hard Drives.
1 has Linux -- can't begin to figure that one out.
2 has XP -- its my Old Faithful. Tried and True. The one I use.
3 has Vista Ultimate -- slmgr -rearm every 30 days. Testing it. It really does suck.
PIM Backup is the best!
Sorry to hear. I use intellisync to sync my data. I sync some stuff from lotus notes and some stuff from outlook. But the main reason i use intellisync is because before it does anything it prompts you with a dialog and tells you what it is about to do. Then I can go ahead or cancel or re sync everything.
I've tried other products and they didn't prompt and I've spent hours cleaning up duplicate entry's after the first sync.
Right now I'm having a few probs with intellisync though and am working with their support to figure it out. But its still one of the best sync programs I know of.

I just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Its a good thing I had a "not too old" backup saved to the Airset Website. Otherwise I would have been TOTALLY screwed.
yep i know how you feel, had the same thing happen on my Magician and on the Hermes and more times than i can remember on the Nokia suite previous to that (believe it or not its worse than Activesync).
as for Vista im running it on the home laptop (it came with it) it is quite a shiny OS and considering the amount of surveys and control groups microsoft apparently did to perfect it (or finish it) its surprising there wasnt one Pocket PC user that said "hey you know that over write function in activesync..." unless there was and they didnt listen.
It wasn't Vista that caused the problem...
Personally I like Vista, the only thing I find crap is that you have to approve every program to run. It's great for security, but really crap If you play WOW, everytime the answer is yes, Vista won't remember it.
And someone mentioned that there is a choice how to sync.
That's correct, but when you pair your device it's kinda hidden in extra options I believe, I've found the button now. Still lost my contacts.
I find it really absurd that there isn't any message or approval question on the device. I think it would be nicer to let the program ask what data to keep what data to lose, if I setup syncing with data from the computer It will overwrite telephonenumber I've changed in the phone.
But I think I have got my contact almost complete again. It's a shame that I lost the phonenumbers that I pickup with te red button (ignore) or wiggle the scrollwheel up and down (silence).

eMbedded Visual Basic Runtime needed

Has anyone managed to successfully run any apps that needs 'embedded Visual Runtime Basic'
I downloaded it from MS and loaded it to the tytn II and then loaded the app which appears to install successfully, but when i launch the app i just get 2 loading (spinning) icons then nothing.
the app i want to run is GPS DIS pro 3.4 which needs VB runtime files to work.
I had the same problem on the HTC P300i also.
Any tips/help is appreciated.
I have a evb program on my tilt that I wrote a couple years back and it runs just fine. Im not familiar with that program so I cant really help you with it but you can definately run evb programs on the tilt/kaiser/tytn II.
Thanks Ren13B,
which VB Runtime file did you load? (link please)
I tried another app that needed VB Runtime also but that wouldnt load also.
ps. are you driving an R100?
Sorry I dont remember where I got it. I just did a google search for it because the link they give you if you dont have it installed is now dead. Doing a quick search now pulls up http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/downloads/evb.aspx which should provide you with what you need. That page states the runtime is no longer supported on anything past Pocket PC 2003 so that might be your problem.
I drive a RX-8 right now. Renesis13B
Thanks Ren13B,
That is the link that i used already. I had some other posts that indicated that it should be installed on the device and not the storage card, which i have done.
Some others like yourself have indicated that they have gotten it running in WM6, but none of my 2 apps being GPS DIS pro3.4 and Geoapps GPS Stealth 1.00.
Could you try them and let me know if you can get them to run?
Cheers!
PS. Ever thought about dropping in a 20B???
Sure, I can try them. Can you post links for them or pm the links if they arent free apps?
I had a 2nd gen RX7 that I wanted to put a 20B in but it was too costly at the time. Im keeping the RX8 relatively stock for now. Cant afford to have car troubles these days.
Nevermind..i found a trial version. Trying it now.
Doesnt run on mine either. I get the same two spinning icons and nothing else happens.
try a soft reset,
when i did that i got a tad further. (to the point where it tells me that i have used X number of 15 tries.
Thanks

OEM Vista Home Premium to Ultimate

Hi, I got Vista Home Premium on my PC, its an OEM copy so as far as I know I can't use it with another PC. But, if I buy OEM Vista Ultimate will I be able to install it on the same PC?
I don't want to updgrade, I will be doing a fresh install on a formatted Hard Disk. But I just wondered if OEM versions (eg: Vista HP) send my motherboard serial number to Microsfot and prevent another copy of OEM (eg: Vista Ultimate) being installed on it. I don't want to run them at the same time either, just "swap versions" basically.
Thanks!
it would not be logical for ms to block it that way as it would result in them selling less copies
p.s. why get ultimate?
i ask because alot of people seem to go for the name more then the difference between them
unless one require the 64bit vista or want the
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx
ms versions of what many other 3th party programs offer in a grater quality
then there really is no reason to get ultimate
it's not faster or better just extre included tools
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption
* unless one have REALLY secret stuff then it's more trouble then it's worth slows the system down a bit
and if one have to reinstall one cant count on getting the encrypted data back
Remote Desktop Connection
* only really usefull for servers imho where one dont wish to have to go to the server room to mess about and then do it remotely from another pc
Windows Fax and Scan
*scanners always comes with software & Fax? is stoneage tech along with teletext on tv's--
Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore
*much better 3th party backup programs then anything with ms's name on it
I use a *cough* OEM version using acer certs (acer laptop) and I find I prefer ultimate because I have used it more than Home Premium which shipped with it.

I got Vista HP as soon as it was released. Then six months later I got Windows Home Server as soon as it was released. Turns out that Remote Desktop'ing from the web to your home PC (via Windows Home Server) is only possible with Vista Ultimate. A big annouance for Home Premium buyers.
There are some tweaks for Vista HP, but I am thinking I wil go down this route.
Vista Ultimate
Hi,
I have a copy of Vista OEM running on my home machine. It's not a problem although if you do change the hardware significantly (upgrade the BIOS, add CD drives) etc and then need to re-install it you may need to call Microsoft in order to activate it again. However, I've had to do this a couple of time with no problems from MS.
Actually you wont need to reactivate unless you change your mobo or its bios. but what i've done... i`ve patched the SLIC table in ACPI table in my bios, added Asus OEM certificate and now have ultimate (modified with vlite) which even passes WGA tests)) but if you buy a legal copy of ultimate, you can install it no matter what SLA information is in your bios

Not sure exactly how you are trying to do this, but I have no problems, using my Vista Home Premium Laptop to connect to my WHS box and use RDP... Are you sure that your WHS has the ports opened properly...?
" Remote Desktop'ing from the web to your home PC (via Windows Home Server) is only possible with Vista Ultimate. A big annouance for Home Premium buyers."
as far as i know it's also possible with business version of vista
but of cause that lacks mediacenter and such
So for those of you you want Remote Desktop "server" capabilities on your computer and want Vista Ultimate for that reason alone, check out:

Thanks for all the replies.
@ debonairone - I'm talking about being at a 'kiosk' pc and visiting http://myserver.homeserver.com, and being able to remote desktop into my Vista PC. I can RDP to the WHS from within Vista.
@ sketchy9 - Thanks, that is the work around I mentioned before. Seems like a lot of tweaking for me.

........until one installs SP1. I won't be surprised if it'll only be a few weeks until a new RD dll hack is developed to resolve the SP1 changes.

Nogo on XP Pro. Requirements call for Vista or Server 2008. Might be a service driver that could be used from Vista in XP, but not sure about that.
Awesome. I have been waiting for this for some time now. It would be nice for everyone if there was mirror link posted. Also if the mods could move this to the correct section it would be great too, such as the software section.

SideShow is a feature of Windows Vista and it has not been, and probably will never be, ported to older Windows versions due to underlying differences in the operating systems, driver models etc.
Such a shame this is only bluetooth, other sideshow devices utlise wifi.
Still cool to finally get it though.

It's still in its very early stages, so it may eventually get there and offer wifi support (Salling Clicker does it so MS definitely should be able to get it running).
I couldn't get it to work on my pavillion laptop (dv9700t)...it keeps saying 'can't connect' from the software. Yet, I can see it briefly connect then disconnect on my laptop. Oh well, back to salling clicker....

This is a really neat idea in theory. I just found out about this the other day when Woot had a picture frame for sale that supported SideShow.
I found it much more useful for a device like a dumb terminal picture frame. It could allow you not to just show pictures, but overlay the weather, RSS feeds, e-mail notifications, and even stream music to the frame.
Although I like that it is being supported for WM devices, I don't really see too many advantages of the current widgets/gadgets/whatever that are out there.
A WM phone is already a powerful device that has outlook, media player, office mobile (including power point) that having to stream these as a sideshow to the device seems redundant. I'm sure some plugins will come around that are very innovative, but I don't really see the use other than novelty right now.
The advantage I see would be for developers to write just a sideshow app that can run on many platforms and not just tied to vista.
For instance a sideshow app for Windows Media Center that would allow you to turn your phone into a powerful remote for WMC.
I don't know if 2008 supports sideshow yet, but if they add it in I could see a HUGE benefit of having a server monitoring sideshow that I could connect to remotely. I could keep track of servers remotely and perform some common tasks via the sideshow.
These are the types of things I'd like to see eventually.
This was posted in the general thread, but I see this one is more active so I will post my comments here as well.

This is cool
I am giving this a shot on my Tilt with the L26 diamond v5 rom. I paired my phone with my Vista business pc and connected right away. Some of the other gadgets you can install are pointless. Gmail viewer? LOL. All you can do is view the mail... so you have to walk back over to the pc and check it anyway. The media player gadget is the best... I could actually see me using this for a party or social gathering where I can control all the tunes from my phone. I COULD NOT get the picture viewer to work!!! When I downloaded the .msi file I got the error "This application is not a valid install fie" or something of that nature.
Any ideas on that one?
i still can't get the bloody thing to work.
in my experiance of it you need to be using microsoft bluetooth stack/drivers, widcom broadcom, toshiba or blueseil dont work, which is a pain because windows bluetooth drivers are very limited as to what else they do, if anybody gets this working with bluesoeil drivers let me know

A "Stripped to the bone" ISO of win7, a good idea?

I was wondering if anyones gone before me and done this and has any thoughts and ideas to share.
IF anyone is familiar with 7customizer, I was never clear now in it's v1.13 stage that it had any ability to remove crap like vlite to make a slimmed version of win7 suitable for the HTC SHIFT with as small HDD footprint and few running services as possible.
7customizer is new and seems limited but built for win7.
vlite is said to work well with win7 but is built for vista.
I have tried 7customizer and all i was able to do was make the installation of win7 unattended which is a real whop-di-do...
vlite for win7 i tried but and got the image from 2.3gb down to 1.2gb which is real nice but upon selecting regional settings in the first stage it then asked me for some drivers and showed a blank dialog box, i never got past this stage to chose which partition to install on and got stuck.
has someone perhaps done this successful with a saved vlite preset on what was saved and what got chucked?
is all this maybe to much trouble to go through for ultimately little gain?
Had a bit of difficulty sleeping last night so i got started on this project and spent some time thinking about it and i decided to ask you guys for help.
Tiny 7 is worth a look with an installation size of 2.6gb (on the hdd) but i couldnt get the touchscreen to work on it
tiny 7 is a program or a home made ISO of win7?
But the lack of touchscreen is a dealbreaker, you sure theres no hope?
Unless they decide to add it again, I tried the add/remove windows features with no luck.
I know there is a way to slim your Windows 7 but I have not tried. Please cked the following:
http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/windows-7/8441-how-slim-down-windows-7-a.html
Some progress ive tried vlite to copy tiny7 with no luck however ive found out that the driver is installing (the touchscreen shows up in HID's)
The problem is the lack of the TabletInputService which should be eaiser to port than the entire tablet pc components. The service points to
C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted
If we could find a way to add this service to tiny7 we will have an iso that only takes up 2.4GB of hdd and flys on the HTC Shift.
