I've just installed Microsoft Vista and find it a very nice operating system.
For my phone I had to install the Vista version of ActiveSync, I paired up my phone with that prorgam and it worked flawlessly.
But what FU#[email protected]% idiot has made an option to overwrite the phone data with that of outlook WITHOUT asking a deletion approval.
When installing software on my Vista machine askes me several time if I'm sure.... But that louwsy program just deletes everything without even asking.
Fortunately, I was just a merely 250 contacts that I've completely lost since my backup was lost due to the Vista installation.....
Normally the contacts would be in the deleted messages box, but since I've turned of that option I completely lost everything...

hahaha
It happened to me several times cuz I always reflash my PDA and format my laptop.. I decided to save them in Microsoft's servers and add them to Messenger live contacts
When you pair your devices the MOBILE DEVICE CENTER is asking you how you want your data synchronized: replacing on mobile device, replacing on pc or combining! I guess you haven't paid attention! Even after you paired your devices you can change this options in the settings.
yikes, im sorry about that. Also happened to me not too long ago except on XP when I deleted the contacts on my phone. I resynced hoping that phone contacts would be restored, but instead stupid activesync deleted all the contacts off outlook even though AS was set to "replace items on device"!
Thankfully, all my contacts were moved to the "Deleted Items" folder, and I could restore them! (hit ctrl-6 when in outlook) I hope this helps.

damn straight! best program i've ever used. by backing up to a memory card once/twice daily you cant really go 'wrong' as such!
now, if only it was a 'requirement' for all cooked roms!
sorry to hear about your loss. lol. i very nearly lost my ENTIRE MSN messenger contact list (comprising of some 400+ contacts) but luckily i had 'tried' WLM on my smartphone before hand and it had synced them to that!
WLM is weird in the only sense that it will delete from both your phone and from your messenger list!

Typically one should never upgrade a Micky$ OS until SP1 is released, XP and W2k are both great examples. My biggest complaints are USB and network speed when copying data... just today went back to XP on my Thinkpad... just SO much easier when dealing with PDA's... (more importantly, my version of Ghost Server won't live under Vista... that's a deal closer for me... and screw Virtual PC and such, no time or desire)
Here is My 2 cents worth:
Windows 95 was a huge improvement over Windows 3.1. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows 98 was just a suckier version of Windows 95.
Windows Millenium Edition ME totally sucked. I fell for it. They got my $100.00 ----- ripped me off.
However Windows XP really hummed. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows Vista is just a suckier version of Windows XP.
Windows Vista = ME2 Only this time they're Not getting my $100.00
Thats just my Opinion.
Stick with XP Pro...............................(I can hear Mac users saying "get a Mac")
Mac is not a solution - it limits just about anything you want to do with the computer. IMHO Win XP offers much more in terms of available software and hardware compatibility (even over Vista).
I agree Mac is Not an answer. I got a supervisor at work always telling me how much better a Mac is. I never agree with him.
My Laptop has a door on the side where you can slide out the HDD. I have 3 Hard Drives.
1 has Linux -- can't begin to figure that one out.
2 has XP -- its my Old Faithful. Tried and True. The one I use.
3 has Vista Ultimate -- slmgr -rearm every 30 days. Testing it. It really does suck.
PIM Backup is the best!
Sorry to hear. I use intellisync to sync my data. I sync some stuff from lotus notes and some stuff from outlook. But the main reason i use intellisync is because before it does anything it prompts you with a dialog and tells you what it is about to do. Then I can go ahead or cancel or re sync everything.
I've tried other products and they didn't prompt and I've spent hours cleaning up duplicate entry's after the first sync.
Right now I'm having a few probs with intellisync though and am working with their support to figure it out. But its still one of the best sync programs I know of.

I just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Its a good thing I had a "not too old" backup saved to the Airset Website. Otherwise I would have been TOTALLY screwed.
yep i know how you feel, had the same thing happen on my Magician and on the Hermes and more times than i can remember on the Nokia suite previous to that (believe it or not its worse than Activesync).
as for Vista im running it on the home laptop (it came with it) it is quite a shiny OS and considering the amount of surveys and control groups microsoft apparently did to perfect it (or finish it) its surprising there wasnt one Pocket PC user that said "hey you know that over write function in activesync..." unless there was and they didnt listen.
It wasn't Vista that caused the problem...
Personally I like Vista, the only thing I find crap is that you have to approve every program to run. It's great for security, but really crap If you play WOW, everytime the answer is yes, Vista won't remember it.
And someone mentioned that there is a choice how to sync.
That's correct, but when you pair your device it's kinda hidden in extra options I believe, I've found the button now. Still lost my contacts.
I find it really absurd that there isn't any message or approval question on the device. I think it would be nicer to let the program ask what data to keep what data to lose, if I setup syncing with data from the computer It will overwrite telephonenumber I've changed in the phone.
But I think I have got my contact almost complete again. It's a shame that I lost the phonenumbers that I pickup with te red button (ignore) or wiggle the scrollwheel up and down (silence).

i know this aint phone/PDA related but im at a loss to explain how this works.
i picked this up over the weekend via torrents thinking it would be full of viruses but turned out not only to be virus free but to work flawlessly.
did anyone else manage to get it? ive been able to run it on PCs running XP SP1 and XP SP2 both with a standard install of office 03.
the USB 07 seems to only load what it needs to into memory the really wierd part is it comes with 7 files with only one being 500 meg
MSTORE.EXE 21kb
EXCEL.EXE 35kb
WINWORD.EXE 53kb
OIS.EXE 36kb
POWERPNT.EXE 50kb
OFFDIAG.EXE 209kb
MSACCESS.EXE 531,148 kb
and yes ive done 2 virus scans with 2 different scanners LOL
any ideas?
Be interesting to see, i've found the torrent and am going to have a go this evening.
Perhaps its only the exe files that differ to a 2003 installation or is that far too simplistic a view?
Surely there have to be some features that don't work properly?
prehaps its a version that will work off a USB drive without being installed?
Imp
Office 2007 Basic lists its requirements as 1.5Gb HD Space, it would take a lot of work to thin this to 1/3 of the size and maintain functionality.
However....
I have tried this myself now, works on Vista Ultimate with office 2003 installed. Also ran it on XP sp2 with no office installed and also tried them both with no connection to the internet present and all apps ran fine.
Did you notice that it said powered by thinstall on startup.
Have a look at
http://www.thinstall.com/sales/pres...install.com/products/resources_get.php?aid=14
Appears that it is an up to date version of this.
I've just read and did a search around, there are definately some running wild in the net. Ok, even if they run nicely now, do you think there will be an expiry date on it making it invalid say .. tomorrow? anyway, i did a check on this 'thinstall' as well, it seems that they have OpenOffice in 100MB .. that's nice enough for me. I'm supporter of OpenOffice.
yeah i been using it for 3 days now with not many issues on serivce pack 2 XP. had a few funky errors but nothing that didnt occur more than once.
it has everything available even the million rows in excel and the few new formulas in excel and access.
its very nice if you cant use 07, microsoft should look at selling it on USB keys LOL!!
@ sparky yeah i did some googles and saw that one. was interesting that you tried it on a computer with no office on it, was talking with a friend who wanted to try that too.
still baffled by its size and power given the size of the proper version.
yeah open office is ok but its no office 07 with black interface LOL
Background:
All iphone users know how terrible itune when it came to file and audio management on your iphone. When I am Googling for beter pc suit than itune for my friends iphone, I found out this.
Same soft available for WM as well.
I think original version of software is Chinese. When you change language to English, some of background images remain with Chinese. It doesn't have any impact on.
Hope this will useful to someone
It has more options than Activesync and Mymobiler
Check this out and send your comments

It looks like it has a lot of useful features. But it does not recognize my phone.
With Activesync installed on my XP SP2 system, my phone works fine.
This software requires Activesync, and the phone to be connected and AS to recognize it.
But even with that, the software says "Disconnected" when I plug my phone in.
I have tried on four different systems here at work.
Apparently, my firewall was blocking all contact with the update server. It said very bad things. Not sure why.
So I am now running the application in a virtual machine here at work (IT Admin for a living), and allowed it to update only to that machine.
It is running now, and is almost entirely in English. It sees the phone. Time to play with the software.
hehe the software Chinese version come along with lot of AD link lead to pages.
the functions are great and I found it the best group SMS tool, much better than those PPC apps.
If there are more than 600 in group, the apps on PPC will keep crashs, but I did it with this soft.
This doesn't work on my Vista PC.
Hi, Maybe someone can help, I have searched through google, microsoft forums and here - no luck so far :-(
I got Vista Hope Premium, Office 2007 (home and sudent) and X1 ;-), unfortunately Outlook was not supplied with X1 so....
how the hell can I open notes from my phone (*.pwi) on my laptop and desktop?
I am afraid this is lost case :-( seems to me ti was mistake to by WM device instead of Android :-(
HELP! and thanks
http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forum...t-read-pocket-pc-word-document-my-laptop.html
found googling for "pwi open on pc office 2007
Seen it already but it has nothing to do with my problem :-(
Vista does not have ActiveSync anymore.
I do not have problem with Word files.
So link you gave me is irrelevant :-(
I have seen almost all there is in the net about pwi files - if no one here knows than simply it is not possible to achieve :-(.
At the moment it is not possible to read *.pwi files in Vista unless one has full Ms Outlook (not supplied with X1) and it is possible to open them in Outlook only not in Windows :-( seems to me that because of that a lot of users is "suffering".

BTW, when I bought my previous HP PDA's there was a copy of Outlook included in the box, I supposed this was included with the Win Mo license but obviously I was wrong.....is some other PDA manufacturer still providing it ?

For PC, to replace Windows Mail, that doesn't support notes, contacts and calendar sync from WinMo devices.
I've just sold my old iPaq on ebay, I should have kept the Outlook installation CD with me !
I do not want Outlook I have spend money (quite a lot) on X1, I bought (earlier) Office 2007 without Outlook as I do not need such a big application just for calendar/contacts and mail (way to confusing). Now, Nots that I love in my X1 are not really usable if I can not open them on my PC, edit, send to someone who just want to click and have them opened.
Is there anything out there that would have the same features but would not require MS Outlook? Almost everyone has Ms Word... so a mobile application whose files could be opened by Word would be great!
Pwi files are only opoened by Ms Outlook - it is not really fair by MS... but.... what can we do? Just buy Android or iPhone next time

I quite agree with you, I would add it's pathetic that MS doesn't include any small PWI viewer/converter in Vista (up to XP, Active Sync did it)
A dirty workaround could be to install Agile Notes as standard Notes replacement on the mobile, as this tool has the capability to save note in RTF format (readable with MS Word)

Will this app. allow me to save text and drawings/hand writing? And than open it as in PDA on PC?

Dirty because RTF format is less compact than PWI and because this tool takes longer to start than the standard note writer (I've installed on my X1 but never used for this reason, when I need to write down a note I need to do it quickly)
Honestly I don't remember if it can save also drawings, just have a look
http://www.agilitylab.com/index.html
BTW: it's also freeware !
I have just installed it. It's ok but! it does not allow for handwriting and drawing :-( This is the most important feature for mi in notes app.
If you guys have anything that will do it and will allow to open itself on PC (without Outlook!!! ), pls let me know.
For normal notes I can always use Word Mobile.
Hello,
I've got HTC HD7 with 02 branding and am running Win XP.
I am desperately trying to access phone's internal memory over USB with no success. I would like to shift data so like used to do it on my old HTC Diamond. And I dont want to use the Zune crap, cause it only allows shifting media files like music and videos...
I mean, WM6, 6.1 and 6.5 had a sperate option (ActiveSync, Memory Access or Internet Sharing) when plugging device to the computer.
Is there any similar app or built-in functionality to do so???
Thanks and regards,

nope, zunes the only option right now.
i really do not understand microsoft... they announced wm7 as something absolutely groundbreaking and there are many functionalities i am missing even in comparison to wm6!!!
i mean, okay, i somehow can understand they removed activesync... but memory access via usb?! or wm6 to wm7 data migration?! i mean, these are basic functionalities every mobile device MUST have...
it really makes me think over about giving back my device...

I totally disagree, memory access by USB is not a must have function to sell a mobile phone by any means.
What data are you trying to put onto the device that won't be covered by Zune or a Windows Live/Google account etc?
i just think using pda as a memory stick is a very useful functionality... for example, shifting pdf's when being offline or similar...
Microsoft have taken the approach that in order to produce a stable platform, the file system needs to be locked down so that people cannot "tinker" with it. Its a sensible approach if you think about it from that perspective.
If this was such a big thing for you, why didn`t you check before purchasing?

Well, to each its own, some users TOTALLY DISAGREE with you, while I'm just like you thinking that a new system should be inclusive to all features and capabilities provided by the prior one.
Plus, tinkering with system file? well an 8 GB or 16 GB of storage SHOULD be used the way i Like it, not Locked out as some suggests, at least look ROM files, leaving the rest for the user preferences.
Final word, I TOTALLY AGREE with you about your complaint.

Now now Will,
I just have trouble grasping this type of thread - this was all known before launch and before devices were available to buy. But hey, whatever.
I've just bought a HD7 too, and I have to admit to being absolutely gutted. Admittedly I didn't do too much research into it before getting it but I just assumed that being a windows mobile device it would be reasonably friendly with windows on my desktop computer. I've been tinkering with zunes to get my old pictures and music onto the phone but it's just ghastly.
Chances are I'll ditch it and get an android methinks. Real shame because I used to love my old HD2.
admittedly, i didn't research on this phone before getting it... just because i trusted the plattform - wm6.1 and wm6.5 were stable enough... however, after getting the device, i must say it's nothing for "tweaker", but a pure media consumption system. and thats why i hate it - fancy layers, nice optics, easy-to-use apps, but... zero funtionality. using it makes me feel i'm a little schoolgirl wearing a pink t-shirt.
gonna give it back and get hd2. the lesson i learnt for the second time (after getting fresh-presented htc diamond touch in 2008):
it's better to have an older device with mature os and application landscape than to have the latest device with lots of "fancy" stuff!
never do the same mistake again... thanks to all for replies and warm greetings from germany!
For goodness sake, it was so well trailed that MS would make WP7 a locked down system it would have taken hardly any research to find it out. I wish I had the cash to purchase £500 smartphones with little or no research up front. There is nothing wrong with wanting to tweak etc. but to do so, get an android device, a WM6.5 device, a jail broken iPhone or wait until someone "jailbreaks" WP7. Sheesh it's like saying "OMG I bought a Toyota and am so disappointed to find it isn't a Ford"

Exactly.
Also there is a reason the product is called Windows Phone 7 and not Windows Mobile 7. I noticed its referred to as Windows Mobile 7 a lot in this thread.
Am I mistaken or didn't MS say they would still maintain updates to the old wm6.5 os as a side project?
also how can anyone say zune is ghastly? its easily the best media organizer there is 100times better than itunes and as for android i had a desire and the syncing was so basic and naff. Another good thing with zune is the music organization, look at itunes and getting album art it is dire. Zune on the other hand is easy as pie and if you cant find it in the library even a 5yo could use the manual edit tool. With Zune everything has the right name album art etc my itunes (i have a mac mini in my living room connected to my tv) is about 80% the rest is to messy to be bothered with. I found when syncing with my desire hardly any artwork came through and the media folders where dire to navigate (this is a biggie as i use it to play music in my car)
I think the thing here is as stated before, the facts are out there this phone is what it is. It is not a win 6.5 update it is a separate mobile os. The features it has are are far beyond anything else out there but if you want something that does something else then buy something else. You don't buy a toaster to fry chips.
+1 On the Zune is excellent front....awesome software

Ive been a committed HTC and WM user for a long time now, so latest upgrade i maintained tradition and went HTC HD 7.
At the minute im not sure it was the right one
Lovely fluid interface and fast. But its just not 'easy'..... or something..... I cant put my finger on it. lol
So can some convinced users help me here/ fill me in (and in the process enlighten other newbies).
1/ Battery meter. Only seem to have it when locked. How can i get that into a more prominent place or have it appearing all the time?
2/ No Opera for WM7 Any other browser alternatives out there for us??
3/ Any way for me to get my SPB backups from touch pro 2 onto this thing???
4/ Recommendations for the absolute BEST backup solution
5/ Other advice for porting contacts from another phone
Thats some of my first thoughts- only got the phone yesterday.
In general as well id really welcome recommended app's to help make this powerful piece of kit into a really useful and worthwhile one.
Thanks in advance for any feedback

1) you can simply swipe down where the battery meter is ont the tiles page.
2) Windows Phone 7 is a new OS, hence not alot of Apps currently, give it time, according to this quote on WPCentral "With regards to bringing Opera Mobile to the Windows Phone 7 platform, Norem states that the company is continuously evaluating that option." so you never know.
3) Are we talking contacts? you can back them up in PIMBackup, and expert the CSV file (I think) to a google account, and then synch that account with your windows phone 7!
4) ZUNE? when you update your phone, im pretty sure it makes a backup onto your pc/laptop
5) See post 3!
Hope that helps.
1. Just tap the top of the screen, and the battery, wifi, cell connection all pop down. There is currently no way (that I know of) to display it permanently.
2. There are other browsers out there, but they're all built on top of IE. Mango will introduce IE9. IE9 is pretty nice.
3. It's a whole new OS, with very little in common with it's WM predecessors. You couldn't even use Microsoft MyPhone backups.
4. Zune.
5. I would import them into your live (msn, hotmail, live) account over gmail. Personal preference.
Apps:
Amazon Kindle
Amazon.com
Break.com videos
DailyMotion
Espn ScoreCenter
Facebook
Flixter
FM Radio
MSNBC News
The Daily Show

While the app list isn't huge, there's over 15,000 on the marketplace and growing.
If you've not updated your phone to NoDo, do yourself a favor and install Zune. It'll backup your phone prior to updating as well.
I'll contradict Jimbonics above by saying i'd recommend using gmail over hotmail to backup your contacts.
Only reason is i never managed to sync my phone contacts (which were imported from my old sim) to my Hotmail/Live account, which meant when i reflashed the phone i lost them all. One of my friends has a similar problem and is also unable to backup his contacts he has on his phone to hotmail.
Since i added them all to my Gmail account though everything has been fine. I can add new ones on Gmail and they sync up to my phone, or I can add new contacts on my phone and they sync up to gmail. I haven't heard of anyone else (yet?) having problems with Gmail Sync's either.
