Ive been a committed HTC and WM user for a long time now, so latest upgrade i maintained tradition and went HTC HD 7.
At the minute im not sure it was the right one
Lovely fluid interface and fast. But its just not 'easy'..... or something..... I cant put my finger on it. lol
So can some convinced users help me here/ fill me in (and in the process enlighten other newbies).
1/ Battery meter. Only seem to have it when locked. How can i get that into a more prominent place or have it appearing all the time?
2/ No Opera for WM7 Any other browser alternatives out there for us??
3/ Any way for me to get my SPB backups from touch pro 2 onto this thing???
4/ Recommendations for the absolute BEST backup solution
5/ Other advice for porting contacts from another phone
Thats some of my first thoughts- only got the phone yesterday.
In general as well id really welcome recommended app's to help make this powerful piece of kit into a really useful and worthwhile one.
Thanks in advance for any feedback

1) you can simply swipe down where the battery meter is ont the tiles page.
2) Windows Phone 7 is a new OS, hence not alot of Apps currently, give it time, according to this quote on WPCentral "With regards to bringing Opera Mobile to the Windows Phone 7 platform, Norem states that the company is continuously evaluating that option." so you never know.
3) Are we talking contacts? you can back them up in PIMBackup, and expert the CSV file (I think) to a google account, and then synch that account with your windows phone 7!
4) ZUNE? when you update your phone, im pretty sure it makes a backup onto your pc/laptop
5) See post 3!
Hope that helps.
1. Just tap the top of the screen, and the battery, wifi, cell connection all pop down. There is currently no way (that I know of) to display it permanently.
2. There are other browsers out there, but they're all built on top of IE. Mango will introduce IE9. IE9 is pretty nice.
3. It's a whole new OS, with very little in common with it's WM predecessors. You couldn't even use Microsoft MyPhone backups.
4. Zune.
5. I would import them into your live (msn, hotmail, live) account over gmail. Personal preference.

Espn ScoreCenter

While the app list isn't huge, there's over 15,000 on the marketplace and growing.
If you've not updated your phone to NoDo, do yourself a favor and install Zune. It'll backup your phone prior to updating as well.
I'll contradict Jimbonics above by saying i'd recommend using gmail over hotmail to backup your contacts.
Only reason is i never managed to sync my phone contacts (which were imported from my old sim) to my Hotmail/Live account, which meant when i reflashed the phone i lost them all. One of my friends has a similar problem and is also unable to backup his contacts he has on his phone to hotmail.
Since i added them all to my Gmail account though everything has been fine. I can add new ones on Gmail and they sync up to my phone, or I can add new contacts on my phone and they sync up to gmail. I haven't heard of anyone else (yet?) having problems with Gmail Sync's either.

I have not found any threads regarding this so I went ahead and bit the bullet and tried on my GoodLink server. Initially disappointed because my server was setup to send the last ver 4 GoodLink software to the Kaiser. After upgrading then to ver 5 the phone portion of the device would not work no matter what I did. GoodLink seemed to work but the phone wouldn't. I then uninstalled GoodLink via the remove programs (now GoodLink does not require hard reset to get rid of it).
I waited 24 hours (chicken). I then made sure that ver 5 was pushed to the device initially - viola - seems to work great now after 24 hours. No slowing of the device as was the case with other lesser devices (memory and processor speed!).
So far I believe that for those who want GoodLink and PPC the Kaiser may be the best device so far! I'll keep you updated as to any glitches that come up. I fully recognize that with some of the improvements to Pocket Outlook and with always on active sync GoodLink is not as needed as it was before but there are still some "closer to desktop Outlook" advantages for business users.

So - I binned Goodlink some time ago on the Co HP device and opted for a phone the performance was so bad. Based on your recommendation I might try it again. Where can I get the latest CAB? Will my old account registration work on the TyTN - or do I have to go back to the IS dept for another "key" to get setup?
Thx
Graham
The IT dept has to enable the version 5 for your device. In my case I have my own GoodLink server and I tried to install via a cab file and it didn't work for some reason. So I went back to the OTA setup. Just call the IT dept and ask them to enable the version 5 for your device (that is assuming they have upgraded their server yet) and resend you a PIN email. It is three or four mouse clicks so don't let them act like it is much trouble!
If you don't get ver 5 right off the bat then uninstall it don;t go any further because it didn;t work for me to "upgrade" ver 4 to 5!
how much better is it than 4.93? i find it a little buggy and i still need to activesync my calendar and contacts for other Hpone related items.
Goodlink
Goodlink 4.9.3.21 works like a charm, syncs mail, calendar, notes, tasks, the works and it's fast too. Not sure why yours would be 'buggy'; mine works like a charm without failure.

There are definitely some improvements with ver 5 -- one thing to know (I have another post somewhere else) is that you need to prepare for the fact that there is integration with the native contact list and GoodLink. In other words if you still use Active Sync (like via a server) you will get duplicate contacts. The IT person for the GoodLink server has a setting to choose what parts of you contact list will get sync'd with the native contact list for "use with voice dialing" etc (as per GoodLink's literature), i.e, Last, First, work, home, fax, email. Once you figure out what is going on it is actually better because the native contact list takes up less space because you can pick and choose (the IT GoodLink admin guy) what is sync'd.
All the while the GoodLink Calendar list , of course, gets fully sync's as it is designed to do.
[Interestingly with vers 5 server and ver 5 on the device the GoodLink admin person can actually "dis-allow" the use of any particular application on your device. Every program you have on your device shows up on the GoodLink Mangemenet Console. It's pretty cool -- that is if you have access to the server!!!]
If you have question just ask and I'll try to answer them since I have my own server
PS as far as the duplicate contact thing you need to use PPContactsMgr and delete ALL of your native contacts, then tell active sync NOT to sync contacts and then let GoodLink do its thing as far as syncing the selected fields of you native contact list.
PSS I really like using GoodLink so far -- with it's limited syncing of the native contacts list which then work NICELY with PocketCM to make calls text msgs etc

Iten I was browsing sure does. I was really surprised when I was browsing my new management console for ver 5 and click on a tab that took a minute or two to respond (I didn't know at the time but it was retrieving from my device) and then showed my applications on my device and gave options for which to allow and which to disallow!!
I didn't want to mess anything up so I didn't experiment.

I tried the OTA setup and it gave me version 6(!).. Needless to say my old PIN wasn't valid - and the IT dept wouldn't enable it for me. They said "can't use none approved devices on Company networks".. so I can't use my TyTNII with Goodlink. I think the PIN was for v5.. but I don't see how to get the v5 CAB

Hey there,
While still waiting for DHD to come out I decided to look for a solution that would sync my Sunbird calendar and my Android device without using Google as the middle man. Just when I thought that was not going to be possible (and was already beginning to set up a Google account) I found this:
MyPhoneExplorer:
fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
According to the website, it has the following features:
* Adressbook - with direct sync to Outlook, GMail, Windows contacts, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Lotus Notes and Tobit David
* Organizer with calendarview and direct sync to Outlook, Google, Sunbird, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Windows calendar(Vista), Rainlendar, Lotus Notes, Tobit David and net shared calendars (WebDAV, FTP, local)
* SMS - archive, export, import, excessive messages,...
* Filebrowser with cachesystem to minimize datatransfer, automatic photosync...
* Set phoneclock based on atomtime
* and much more. f.e.: calllists, edit profiles, control phone, memorystatus, phonemonitor,...

Has anyone tried this yet? I'd be interested to know if this program is a viable alternative to the Googly cloud...
I use MyPhoneExplorer to sync up my DHD locally, but with Outlook 2000. It works very well for that. Like you I'm not a fan of the *Googly cloud* ....
It seems that a) there aren't a lot of solutions for a local sync for Android, understandably, and b) there are more solutions for Outlook than TB. Even with my old Nokia it would sync fine with Outlook but TB support only came in recently. Then they c*cked that up and it wouldn't support the latest TB. At that point I gave up on TB and went back to Outlook. It does make life much simpler - at least for me and the requirements I have of it!
I'd give it a go. Oh, MPE also has a forum. Go take a browse and see what people are asking. That may make up your mind, or not ....
Dave
I use(d) MyPhoneExplorer (MPE) for syncing contacts between my old SonyEricsson T610 and K850i. At my opinion, its a very good, extensive and reliable program with a good support. I contacted the autor of this program because of a problem with csv-contact im-/export and he was very endeavoured to solve it. This program is steadily improved, but i didn't use it for long time because it doesn't support my Windows Mobile phone (Xperia X1) (and no other Windows Mobile devices at all!). All the more i'm pleased that Android phones are now supported, because my next phone will get an Android phone (perhaps HTC Desire HD).
Because i haven't got an Android phone yet, i can't tell you how good MPE works with Android. But it would be my first place to go, if i'll get an Andoid phone because i'm using Mozilla Thunderbird too and no Google Mail!
FWIW, I use SyncMate by Eltima Systems (http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html). The observant amongst you may have noticed the word 'Mac' in the URL, as this is a OSX program.
Currently, it synchronises using Google. However, version 3 is due shortly and that will allow for direct device sync.
I'm nothing to do with the developer - just a happy punter.
v
EDIT: I just noted the Thunderbird requirement. Not sure if v3 can handle that...sorry.
Thanks everyone for your feedback. How Ironic: Android devices are officially supported by HTC only on Microsoft OS...
I'll give MPE a try first thing I get my DHD, which, according HTC Germany, will be dispatched to local retail stores between November 10th and 18th
hi nubicurio
i tried it out and in the moment it works well, really well. so if i have in 2 weeks the same opinion, thats really great. i use thunderbird 3.1.6 german and the phone explorer 1.8.0. i also use the addins lightning, the lightning updater, the lightning button and the myphoneexplorer..
i will write in 2 or 3 weeks again... best greeeeez slash_1
This sounds good! ;-) But honestly i didn't expect any other conclusion.

I tried it today and so far it's the best tool I know for a direct sync.
I had some difficulty getting it to work but I finally successfully transferred Contacts and Calendar from my HTC Desire HD to Thunderbird 3.1.7 & Lightning 1.0b2 under Windows 7 Ultimate. Outlook Contacts were transferred better via Android than how Thunderbird imported them directly from Outlook!
I haven't tried Thunderbird to Android sync yet.
Thank a lot for the tip. Strongly Recommended!

Love Windows Phone 7, don't really love the hardware quality of the HD7. There are a few software issue that I am hoping are user fixable and not something I have to wait for an update to address.
1. Search button behavior in Internet Explorer - it irritates me immensely that when you hit the search button on the HD7, it brings up the Google desktop website. Similarly if you enter text in the address bar it searches Google, not Bing. If I wanted to use Google, I'd have kept my Android device. Is there a way to change this yet, and set the T-Mobile USA HD7 to default to the Bing app and not the Google website? Its especially annoying because the results bring you to mobile formatted pages.
2. This is more of a complaint than a fixable issue until copy and paste comes, but I have noticed that the text type recognition doesn't work all the time. In some places if I click an address it goes to Bing Maps but other times it does nothing, it looks like it highlights the word I touch. I haven't been able to find any pattern in which sites work and which don't, but its frustrating.
3. Sometimes when I get a text message the notification sound plays all choppy. It does seem to happen only where service is bad. Is there a fix for this?
4. Office and Skydrive. Maybe I am just retarded but I feel like there should be a way to access my Office files online, specifically through SkyDrive since I can save to it from Office on the computer. Do I have to have a Sharepoint server to do this? Can I really not access my SkyDrive files?
If I remember more I will post.
Also, is there an ETA for Flash?
I have been playing with the skydrive and I added a few files to it to try and see if I could open them on the HD7. The thing is I can open them but have yet to figure out how to open them with Word on the HD7 so that I can edit them and save them back to the skydrive(copy & paste would be nice...meh...soon I hope). But I opened IE and logged into my Windows Live account and I can open anything I have saved on the skydrive, PDFs, word files, excel sheets, ppt presentation, pictures, etc. Now the only issue is editing those files, I haven't tried sending files Word, Excel, etc. to the skydrive and trying to open them on my PC. Will update later with results of further tinkering.
My issues with HD7
Like many people I love this phone but coming from Windows Mobile 6.5 and donw (isn't that weird to say), this phone is really lacking.
1) The Zune software is crap for lack of a better word. No Smart DJ; No Artist photos; no random track play etc. These are not deal breakers but if you came from the Zune HD like me then you'll feel let down.
2) Font Size. It might just be me, but not being able to set a minimal font size is ridiculous. I use the word ridiculous because even my first pocket Pc phone edition in 2001 allowed font resize.
3) No ability to sync my desktop mobile favs. Yes! I know of the work around but wasn't the point of the new OS to avoid all that crap.
4) I want to be able to sync with my local address book. This whole facebook and windows live thing . . . .Look at it this way, if your contacts are based through FB then if one of those contacts cancels their FB acct then you automatically loose all that data. Of course this is not a MS thing.
4) With my HD2 and HTC Sense, I was used to seeing ALL my FB contact photos. Again not an MS thing but . . . .
5) This is really more of a gripe than anything but the battery icon doesn't tell much. How come I can't see exactly how much juice I have left.
6) Unified Inbox, flash, cut and paste. These are all things MS was kind enough to make us aware off so they get a pass on those.

1. Apparently carriers can change the search engine within Internet Explorer, and we can't do anything about it. Once someone gets access to editing the registry, maybe we will be able to change that. BUT I do have some help for you: Search something in Google, and then scroll down to the bottom, find the "Settings" link. Then you can change it to NOT format sites for mobile phones. That should make the experience better!
2. Addresses have to be in a certain format: #### N Street Rd, Zip Code. Like this address, 6362 N Calle Campeche, 85750. If it doesn't have the zip code after the street, it sadly doesn't recognize it. Hopefully they fix that, it's a great feature otherwise.
3. Idk, never had that happen.
4. You can access your Skydrive files and download them to your phone by going to the SkyDrive website (they have a mobile version), but you can't upload any documents from your phone or upload the changes you make in a doc you download. It has been rumored that SkyDrive integration will be implemented at some point.

1. Yeah, I miss SmartDJ too. I never looked at an artist's pictures however. Their picture does load as a background image, but I know that's not what you're referring to. By random track playing, you mean Shuffle? In the now playing screen, tap on the album art, and then click the shuffle icon.
2. Font size depends on the user of course. I'm good with it as it is, but they should have made an option to change it. Maybe a future update.
3. Eh yeah. I don't use favorites honestly
4. You mean how the HTC Album app in WinMo could access all of your friends online Facebook photo albums, right from their contact card? Yeah I loveeeed that in HTC Sense. I was really disappointed when my WP7 didn't have something like that.
4.2. Umm, if a friend cancels their Facebook account, you don't loose anything that you stored yourself. Just add a contact's info into your Windows Live contacts, it will never disappear.
5. Maybe someone will write a battery percentage app. Idk.
6. I personally can't wait for copy/paste!
7. Microsoft made it decetly clear months ago that there wouldn't be a file explorer.
Thanks for the tips, and I'm really hoping someone figures out how to change the search option. It's annoying when my bosses WP7 (HTC Surround) pulls up the bing app in IE, and mine goes to the Google site. You can remove all carrier and manufacture apps (1 step forward) but can't choose your default internet search while your carrier can (2 steps back.)
Hardware wise, the issues I have are these:
After a couple days, the back and battery color have some discoloration. I don't have particularly dirty or clammy hands, so I don't know why this is. It weirdly also doesn't look like where my fingers actually are, so maybe it's heat related. I've seen similar issues on the Touch Pro and the G2. I think it has something to do with the soft touch material.
There is also a gap between the two pieces of the battery cover. This I have seen on literally every unit I've touched. Mine, my boyfriends, the demo unit at T-Mobile, and the ones at Best Buy.
Likewise, if you press search a little hard, you see like a ripple in the bottom right hand corner. This also was on every device I played with, so it's a general thing.
These things, for me at least, aren't deal breakers, but they are annoying, especially compared to the absolutely astounding build quality of the HD2.
...
anyway.
All of this stuff aside, I must say, my actual general usage experience with the device (again, more WP7 than the HD7 specifically) has been honestly, wonderful.
I've found that in my experience, true to Microsoft's goal, everything just works, and works quickly. Coming from Android (recently, after the HD2 I just couldn't deal with WM6.5) and having had every phone in between (iPhone, Palm Pre, a crap ton of Android phones, even a Symbian phone) I must say that I have had the fewest problems, and most fluid experience of all, on WP7. General usage stuff like calls, texts, e-mail, web browsing, social networking etc. are all just super fast and efficient (with maybe the only exception being Facebook's annoying load time, but its not horribly necessary with the "what's new" section in People. Also, despite some issues (like it taking me a week to realize you can click on the song list under now playing) the media and gaming is hands down the best I've had on a phone.
Ugh, is the T-Mobile HD7 locked into Google?
I thought the whole idea of the Search button was to get quick access to the Bing Search Application. Is this so or is it only the search in IE?
Hoping they'll add a way to change that ASAP.

The T-Mobile US variant of the HD7 works like this, in all places other than a) Internet Explorer or b) app that override the search button (like contacts) when you press the search key it bring up Bing. When in IE, it goes to google.com. When in an app with an override, it searches within that app.

About your part B... that's how the search button is supposed to work, Windows Phone was designed like that. The T-Mobile USA HD7 is only different than other phones in part A.
as a few more days have passed, I also noticed that sometimes the Marketplace will lock up. The phone doesn't, I can still go back to the start screen, use all other apps etc, but when I go into Marketplace again it says loading and then goes back into to start unless I restart the device. Not a big deal, not too common, but still a bug. I think its related to the small freezes while browsing apps when it's loading the icons.
To clarify, you can upload and save your changes to SkyDrive. Simply tap down at the application settings and select synchronize. That will sync any changes with SkyDrive.
Sent from my HD7 using Board Express
Edit: it just works with OneNote.
But I think if you download excel doc from SkyDrive and make changes it will sync with SkyDrive?

Yep, that's a problem with just about everyone that has an HTC phone. I'm not sure if it affects Samsung and LG too, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does too.
Have an HD2...thinking about making the official jump, being that there seems to be no solid port to the HD2.
Questing is...Will I be able to use the Microsoft My Phone app to import contacts and such to the HD7?

I looked up instructions and it mentions that " your live contacts will then sync to phone"...I have no contacts on my live account....wouldn't want it to sync and delete everything I have...
Thanks.
Also, must add...I played around with the demo...and I I believe the GUI responsiveness is the best I've ever experienced and tested on ANY phone/OS combo...
There are some weird things about the new OS...but nothing that's a deal breaker. I like the approach that is being taken with the apps as well...quality over quantity. Netflix was a major attraction. I thought the Metro UI was gonna suck...but, it didn't. I also like the simplicity, I believe that also contributes to the speed of the UI.
Correct me if I'm wrong...the Windows 7 hack to the HD2 that these guys are working will boot from SD?...

Correct me if I'm wrong...the Windows 7 hack to the HD2 that these guys are working will boot from SD?...

you can upload your contacts to soocial.com using their winmo app, then export the .csv file to your computer. Then in hotmail (windows live), import contacts, click on the outlook box, then click browse and click on the .csv file that soocial gives you. Then when you set you your new phone and enter your windows live id, it will push the contacts onto your phone.
Hi Folks, I hope I'm posting this in the right section withoud doubling another thread because I have found hints here and there but no actual, efficient solution to my problem.....
Excuse my english, I'm french and couldn't find any solution on french forums either so I'm knocking at your door....
I've always had Android devices but because of some technical issues my provider lended me a WM8 phone (Nokia Lumia 520) for a couple of months before I can get back a new Android phone.
I have the two phones with me for a couple of days but I'm having a hard time transfering some data from the WM8 phone back to my Android, especilly :
-call log (could cope without)
-pdf files (important)
-sms threads (critical)
I mainly focused on SMS's, thinking of different means I could expand upon later on if need be (app, backuping through desktop, outlook or Gmail synch, getting android to synch with OneDrive....) none of this worked so far.
Thanks in advance for your kind help
The only one you will get is the PDF files. You should be able to upload them all into OneDrive and then download them to your PC. From there, transfer them to your Android. The other two are stuck in the Windows cloud, just like how you can't transfer SMS threads from iPhone to Android.
if you come up with something, let the rest of us know!
It *might* be possible to import messages using Bluetooth. I know you can do it from Android to WP8. The other direction... never tried, no idea.

I hoped so from the very begining but I couldn't find any info about doing it the other way round as you mention :/
in the worst case, is there a means to backup those sms in order to check them later on, or print them maybe ?
Well, they're automatically backed up if you turn it on (Settings -> Backup) but that just goes to Microsoft's "cloud" and I don't know how easy it is to find / download / import it would be.
