Both Expansys and the swedish retailer dustin have the new dockingstation in stock. I have ordered one to be used as a computer replacement in my summer cottage. It has two usb ports and vga/video output.

I received it today
It comes with no extra charger, so you have to use your old one. It has 2 usb ports, 1 vga, 1 s-video and 1 composite port. Oddly enough it has 2 mini-usb ports. One for syncing and one for charging. I thought that it would be enough with the sync port as it charges as well.
It can be abit fiddly to get the Athena in place, but otherwise it works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to change the keyboard layout (swedish) and follow up on the mouse pointer issue. After that is sorted out I have a simplistic PC for visually impare (the text is hughe on a 17" screen).

£69.95!!!!! What a rip-off. I know expansys are expensive but that is a joke (sorry). I think I will wait until they filter thru on to ebay.
I bought it from Dustin for SEK 1024 so I don't think it is a rip-off. They do not have a history of over charging. I suspect a device of this price class have expensive acessories. I am a bit disappointed that it doesnt come with a charger.

One seller used to have the have them on ebay at about the same time that expansys used to have them (although I think that they didn't have the second USB port). However, it looked to me like they were withdrawn because suddenly neither expansys nor this ebay seller had any in stock at the same time. Shouldn't be long before they appear on ebay. I seem to recall they were asking about £30 for it but I could be wrong.

Yes, it does.
can someone find one a bit cheaper? I'd like it for playing around testing external hard discs and accessories with but 70 quid is ridiculous for internet prices. Must be very few of them or something.......wonder who supplies Expansys as you don't seem to see their items on Ebay.
might require 2 chargers for extra battery
The docking station has two mini-usb ports. One for sync and one for charge. When I attach the charger to the charging port, nothing happens. My conclusion is, that the extra charging port is for the extra battery. This would mean that if you want to charge both the Advantage and an extra battery, you would have to attach an extra charger to it. If this is the case, it is even more odd that the docking station didn't come with a charger.
The only explanation I could find, would be that the mini-usb has a limited power capability and wouldn't be enough to charge both unit and battery.
//Johan
Joohan
Try to insert only the battery in its slot and switch between the 2 mini USB ports then see what happens.
USB doesnt have enough amps to charge the Ameo as it is, if you look at the mains adapter its a 1 amp output, usb from pc im sure is only half of that at 500 milli amp. the second mini usb may be to attach a second mini usb to get the full charge, I have an external 2.5 HD and it comes with a usb to two mini usb to boost the current. even then it still strugles, without the external mains adapter, which is 1.4 amps.
I could be wrong, just my oppinion, But I notice this when im in the car using usb charger, it keeps everything runnning, "tomtom" but wont really charge it.

This has been discussed before - it depends on the car charger you are using. The one that came with my Brodit holder happily charges the Ameo while using satnav and screen brightness on full.

I think you're probably right, I didn't notice the smaller picture. I stand corrected.
What I will say is that the Expansys one IS an official HTC docking station. It has two usb ports and I suspect that it is of a superior build quality to the GPS For Less model.
This does not detract from the fact that the official HTC dock is a bit of a rip off!!!
cradle looks pretty good. No problem with a single USB - can just use a hub i guess!
Plus looks like no logo on it so I can spray it silver to match my Ameo! WOOHOO
Anyone bought one yet?
I received it, a couple of days ago... quality is not that good... difficult to connect my X7500 in it... the VGAexpansion connector is not well aligned with the USB...
Doesn't charge the X7500 itself, but no problem with the spare battery..
I didn't try the VGA or Video out ...
no problem to synchronize with Vista ...
So... I am not sure I would recommend this accessory, although it is very cheap
I've questioned the store and they confirmed IT'S NOT THE HTC.
Even is half the price, I wont buy it...
Best regards,

I suspected it would be too good to be true. I doubt that Expansys would overcharge their customers to that degree as much as I doubt that GPS for Less could undercut Expansys by half. Presumably the cost of the docking station is set by HTC: the long and short of it is that HTC's device is a rip-off, but a cheap docking station with poor build quality and usability (if opinions are to be believed) is equally a rip-off at 30 quid.
The bad build quality is just on persons view, and i doubt gpsforless would have taken it on board if it was crap, as they are also a reputable company. It is also well known that expansys are rip-off merchants, ya just have to check and compare prices with ebay and various other websites on many items to see how they over-charge customers.

I've had crap stuff from GPS For Less, like car mounts that fall apart. You get what you pay for. Expansys don't set the price of the HTC docking station, they just may not be discounting it very much or reselling what looks like a very inferior plasticky design.
I find all the Athena docking solutions to be unappealing because of the need to slide the device onto the USB port. It has connectors on the base for the keyboard; why not add a few more pins in the first place for USB/power/VGA and have it drop into the dock.
One more week ... now the HTC 7500 can be connected much easier to the cradle...
I will make some pictures tomorow and post them....
With Vista pro .... I have to take off the USB connector from the cradle and then plus it again.... another way it doesn't get synchronize.. It is difficult to say it is the cradle fault or Vista or X7500 .... just it is anoying..
The fact is that when the spare battery is charging it is almost impossible to charge the X7500 itself ... so I have to control, wheter the X7500 is fully charged or not, quite often...
Just received the official HTC Dock. Good quallity, and when I put a usb stick in one of the ports and my logitech mouse in the other, both worked immediately. I am impressed indeed. This is worth the high price

I also had my TyTN II mains adapter fail (after only a couple of months and about 4 uses). It just made a loud click and would no longer power on so if this is what happened to you, see if you can get a (different) warranty replacement through your supplier. Although the TyTN IIs proprietary extUSB port supports USB 2.0, it's a variety called 'USB 2.0 Full Speed' which (just like USB 1.1 Full Speed) only offers up to 12 Mb/sec and not the 480 Mb/s thats the theoretical maximum for USB 2.0 High Speed. When I plug my TyTN II into the NEC chipset USB 2.0 High Speed capable USB ports on my PC, the 'network' thats created is only a 10 Mb/sec one. Both phones have 5 Volt adapters designed for HTC extUSB ports and the USB 1.1 vs 2.0 differences are not associated with mains charger connections so you should be fine.
Hey all,
seeing all the threads about OTG and the difference to MHL, I thought I'd try to clear things up a bit:
Is this just another name for MHL?
No, it's not. MHL and SlimPort do the same, but in different ways. It's not the same and accessories are not compatible. You will need a new adapter, e.g.
Aren't we being 'appled' here?
Just a little, really. SlimPort does have several advantages, such as support for more than just HDMI and the freedom not to connect a power source, if you don't want to. Also it helps make the device as cheap as it is, because while MHL requires fees, SlimPort does not.
Does this device support USB OTG?
No, not yet. It should be possible though. Analogix (the makers of SlimPort) state their product will pass USB OTG signals to a host controller. Is there a host controller? Yes, there is! The N4's CPU includes one Figures it's a matter of support in the kernel, someone will likely get to this in the near future.
Sounds pretty impressive, huh? I'm afraid it isn't. While most manufacturers switched to a 11-pin design, SlimPort still uses 5-pin according to the whitepaper. Now, what does that mean? There's 3 data lines less, usual USB connections are not even possible, says the whitepaper. So it will most likely not be possible to use video output and OTG at the same time.
Most people will not care about this, but it will be a big deal for those - including me - who want to use it as a 'PC replacement'.
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I did some thorough research and believe I should be right with my statements here.
Regards,
dobbi10k
I'm disappointed with this switch to SlimPort.
1. I just want to get the display of my phone to the TV. So to me MHL and SlimPort do the same thing and it doesn't matter if they do it differently.
2. I feel "Apple'd" big time. Only one company makes these SlimPort adapters that I could find and they charge $30 for it. The MHL adapter I already own can't be used. Argh.
And I kept hearing about how I wouldn't need a power cable and that was suppose to be an advantage to SlimPort. But reading on their website, it sounds like the TV or monitor must support SlimPort too in order for the power over HDMI to work. Standard HDMI ports from the TV to the adapter will still need a separate power source.
I doubt SlimPort will catch on and I know I won't be spending $30 for an adapter that nothing else will probably ever use.
God, I need a freaking Miracast box that will work with my Nexus 4 in the worst way.
I think you pay the fees with the cable rather than possibly paying fees with the phone for a feature you may not want. I think this is why the cable costs more.
I could be wrong though and its just a company profitting because they are currently the only supplier.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I thought the micro usb sockets only had 5 pins anyway, so where the hell doe the 6 pins come from?

No, that was true for MHL, either the screen had to have a power output on the HDMI cable or you had to connect an external power source. SlimPort however makes this unneccessary, you CAN connect an external power source to charge your phone, but you don't have to.
If I already bought an MHL adapter, I would probably feel apple'd too, got you point, though

The standard is maintained by VESA and it's completely free. However, the HDMI standard still requires fees, which you pay with the cable. A display port adapter could be made way cheaper. But the latter is true, too. All these adapters could be made cheaper.

NO> Any that aupprts the 5-pin should work fine. It is just that 2.0 & 3.0 don't need external power, if supported by the device, & 3.0 has greater speed & bandwidth capabilities. 4K video & 7.1 surround sound (L-PCM) support.

Except that one states in big red letter that external power is REQUIRED. WHich would make it MHL 1.0. It also states 1080p, again MHL 3.0 supports 4k video. Most of the MHL 2.0 devices also support at least USB 3.0, that one supports USB 2.0, which again supports it being an MHL 1.0 device.
That's the thing, I have found a few that claim to be MHL 3, but none of them seem to pan out to actually be MHL 3.0. Most of the time when you contact to call them on it, or inquire, you get zero response. Ebay is pretty notorious for knock offs too, like the 128Gb & even 64Gb UH1 Micro SD cards.
So there is no mhl 3.0 5pin out there adapter yet.
Which 2.0 5 pin adapter should I be

It might be a year old standard, but devices/phones supporting it are only just now being released. So, accessory manufacturers have had no reason to manufacture any adapters until now. Hopefully it won't be too long until we start seeing some now that there are some devices that can take advantage of it.

For what its worth the one I bought I have to plug things in in a specific order or it won't work. I believe it is power, then HDMI, then MHL into M8. I have to do this each time, if I unplug it from the phone and just plug it back in it won't work until I unplug everything and reconnect in that order.

The symbol of MHL beeing connected appears but there is onde more no image on the TV. I even tried connecting first power, then MHL and then HDMI but it´s the same thing. Can someone give me some tips, please? I am getting desperate
Did you ever get this figured out? I just used mhl for the first time on my m8. I used the same cable I did for my m7. It's a
Skiva 6.5 feet MHL (Micro USB) to male HDMI cable. I had trouble at first but here's how I got it to work flawlessly: first I plugged everything in, no particular order... Next I plugged in the micro usb part to my m8 while the tv input was still on my normal everyday input... I waited until my red charging light turned on my m8 then I switched to the correct tv input. My m8 went into mhl mode and I streamed a movie perfectly.
I tried switching the tv input first then plugging in my phone and it wouldn't work. But, when I left it on my normal input, then plugged my phone in and saw it was charging, then changed inputs.... Success!
Thanks, I will try if that works. But I've got little hopes, to be honest
