AT&T 8925 not locked to TeleNav - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

According to this post, this guy just tested TT on his branded AT&T 8925 and it works fine. Kiss good bye to the locked to TeleNav myth!!!
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1251541&page=3

Bunch of others say it is........soooooooooo guess when everybody gets the fugly we will know. Mine is unlocked called a TyTN ll .......
d

2 guys with the same device(one using google maps and the other TT) confirm it is NOT locked. Thats good enough for me. Plus they have pics to prove they have the actual AT&T device, and are posting on the forums from the 8925. Additionally, what would they gain by lying its not locked?

Don't know why would the ones posting from the fugly say it was locked? I dont call any of them liars. If I had it I wouldn't want to post pictures of it.....

Thats odd, I have no need to jumpstart Google maps. When I tell it to track my location, I get a blue window at the top right saying its locating satellites, and then pinpoints my position.
I have it set to "Set by Windows (Via Start -> Settings) checked in the Options/Track Location Settings in Google Maps.
Under settings/external GPS
Programs Tab: GPS progtam port set to COM4,
Hardware Tab: GPS Hardware port: (none), and baud rate: 4800
Access Tab: Check Manage GPS automatically

It works as stated in this thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1251541&page=7&pp=15
w/o initializing ant TeleNav, so the GPS is NOt locked and you do NOt have initialize any program(i.e. TT or TeleNav) to then be able to use another GPS software.

Since when do people go by release dates, or pictures, or information leading to a particular product when they actually have the device in their hand? For that matter even go on forums to find the info out? Thats the whole purpose of "not having the device", for other people that have it BEFORE you experience the device & give their opinion on it BEFORE you buy it or have it. Thats why many forum mods get "test devices." For that particular reason, to test it before you go spend your money on something you may not like. I thank people like that because it gives you an insight on what to expect, before you buy the device. Interesting how you call the device "fugly", when I havent seen you mention you have this device in your possession. BTW I dont like beer, hard liquor here.

Sorry... Another GPS / Google Maps Question

I've read so many posts, you'd think I could get this to work.
I've run the QuickGPS that comes w/ my AT&T Tilt. It shows a download time and that it's valid for a little over 6 days from now.
When I run Google Maps, and try Track Location, I get the standard error message that says my GPS receiver is not responding.
Anyone have any thoughts/pointers?
thx
Robert
did you go into settings and change the GPS settings?
Wait. I just found another thread that says I need to run something besides QuickGPS to get Google Maps to work.
I'm confused. I need to run (i) QuickGPS, (ii) another application (such as GPS Test or GPS Viewer), AND (iii) google maps?
Or, do I just need to run (ii) and (III)?
thx

In theory, it should work with only (i) and (iii). However, in practice, it seems people (including me) only have success if you do (i), (ii), and (iii).
E.g. Run something like Windows Live, get the Satellite fix, then run Google Maps. I know its cumbersome, but it seems that Google Maps' tolerance for waiting for a sat signal is too short. And since all other progs work with the GPS without such actions, I'd say its a Google Maps issue, not a Kaiser one.
I have never had a problem?
I feel like i am missing something...I have Tom Tom, and google maps, and have never done anything except run them? Works flawlessly for me, are you guys running htc rom?

I've seen elsewhere that some people that have changed their GPS settings on the Kaiser/Tilt have needed to hard-reset to get the GPS to work again.
So, I would suggest doing a hard-reset and be sure to just not touch any GPS settings following that.
You DON'T need to run any other 3rd party apps to enable your GPS or anything of that sort. Just install Google Maps and go outside to test it. It could take up to a minute to get a signal. It's also possible you might get the error you previously mentioned, the first time you open Google Maps. Just click "retry", and that should do it.
Give that a shot and report back.
I used TomTom last night (I downloaded the free Chicago map but don't live anywhere near Chicago) and it truly is a slick app.
BUT
I use Windows Live all the time with it and am very very impressed how it works. I don't have the Google app loaded so can't comment on it specifically.
But I was having issues with QuickGPS and had to hard reset to fix it.
-Mc
It all depends on your location and how quick your unit finds the satellites. GOogle Maps has a very short timeout allowance. So, yes, sometimes, retrying over and over will work. Sometimes not. Running another program that has a higher timeout tolerance helps in those situations. E.g. I was in Portland this week and with the heavy cloud cover and rain, it took about 2.5 min for it to get a fix. Thus Google kept timing out. So, I switched to Live which waited and waited and waited, and then when it had the fix, worked nicely. I could then stop Live and switch to GoogleMaps and it would work nicely.
Yes, it is a problem with Google Maps apparently
It has a very short timeout to get satellite fix.
This is getting frustrating. Maybe I'm just an idiot. I installed Windows Live and configured it to Com 4. I then had Live "center on GPS" and instead of Palo Alto where I am now, it shows me in Oakland. When I switch to Google Maps, I still get the timeout error.
Arrrgh.
Guess I should try GPS Viewer or something instead of Windows Live?
Robert
Yes, try GPS Viewer to see the number of sats you are receiving.

Well. Downloaded GPS Test (not GPS Viewer) and it shows about 3 satellites (usually 2 are green, 1 yellow). At the minimum, I have one yellow bar. I'm on the 6th floor with a large window that I can see a HUGE amount of sky out of. So I'm kind of disappointed. (Well, now I show no satellites).
It's been indicating "GPS Starting up" for over 3 minutes.
Google Maps still won't get GPS to work
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Robert
i had alot of google map problems also. after setting to com 4 and 4800 baud go outside and try the track location feature. also it helps if its not too cloudy. Most of the times I was testing it I was inside the house which didnt work.
FYI. GPS Viewer has the following error on my device:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
Robert
... and where do I find GPS Viewer? As far as I can tell, it is not on my phone..?
You need to download it, search the forum. there is a link to the site/file somewhere
found another cool one, free http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/
Just a followup. I downloaded GPSViewer from another site. It works. And now Google Maps works.
Evidently GPS Test just wasn't enough by itself.
Thanks all.
Robert
Strangely I have the opposite problem, GPSViewer can never get a satellite lock, I can leave it for minutes and nothing, but load up Google Maps and within seconds... there I am.... :-D

Go to this page and see the link for external mirror 1. use it to download GPS TEST:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/GPS-Test-Download-34335.html
or get it here:
http://classic.pocketgear.com/softw...ssociateid=1224
When you have installed it, run it and it will auto scan the ports to find the GPS receiver. Make note of the port number - that's the one you'll need for your other applications (like tomtom etc). Make sure you have a clear view of the sky when running it and give it PLENTY time to achieve a first time fix.
By the way if you have ever used the "External GPS" on the Kaiser then you may have altered some settings that can stop GPS working. Unfortunately only a hard reset will cure this. BUT, try the above first. If GPS test can get satellites then so will other applications.
This little application GPS Test is also useful to run before things like Google Maps that some folks have problems with.

Ok. If GPS test works and finds sats then, you have an incorrect port set on the other applications. From GPS Test see what port it has found the GPS on. Then in tomtom say, use "other nmea device" or "internal GPS" whichever option it has in the "configure" menu and set the port to the one noted from GPS test.
Fact is that if GPS test finds sats then everything is working and its just getting the link between the GPS and the nav software that needs fixing.
Mike
I just had to leave my house and try it on the road. Now it works everywhere. YEAH!!!!!!!!!
THANKS GUYS (mikechannon) !!!!!!!!!!

I used to have the same exact problem...Google Maps just gives up if it doesn't find a fix right away. TomTom does finally get a lock without GPS Test, but it takes less time if you have GPS Test running beforehand.
I had the same problem .. GPS would not work with Google, MSN live. Downloaded GPS test and still nothing. I finally did a "hard" reset (painful, but I did have everything backed up on my PC with Active Sync).
After the hard reset GPS worked GREAT! I must have messed up a setting trying to get it to work. GPS test now reports that the GPS is active on COM4, 9600 baud.

You don't have to run it before every GPS application. Some folks find Google Maps benefits from doing this but I only suggested running the GPS test app to establish which port was being used. Even with Google maps you may find on subsequent occasions you do not need to run an app like GPS Test first.

I don't have that problem - even when I have few fixed satellites. However I did read a report recently where someone routinely had the arrow showing 200mtrs away from his position. Sorry to say it was only after a Hard Reset that the problem vanished.
As a side issue. I have noticed with tomtom and any other GPS software -
If you start the GPS software in an area with no or poor GPS signal, then it will take FAR longer to get a fix EVEN when you go into a clear sky area.. If however when you start the GPS software in a good open sky area then it will fix much more quickly.
The moral of this story - don't start the GPS when you are inside a thick walled building - wait until you get outside first. I'mguessing that starting in an area with a very weak signal sends it searching in all the wrong areas for satellites and it will then take a long time to find them even when you get outside. (This is true, I have noticed with all GPS systems I've used not just the Kaiser.
Mike
FYI, I have found that Map4PDA breaks the GPS. I believe it changes the baud rate to 57600, which is incorrect (it should be 9600). The only way to fix it I have found is to Hard reset and not install Map4PDA.
TomTom, Micrsoft Live Search (with Speach), & Google Maps work great. Features set in that order.
PS that GPS test tool works GREAT. Thanks for the heads up.

which GPS?

I have had my AT&T Tilt for about a month now. I would like to use it as a GPS also, but i do not want to pay the monthly fee for a data package. What are my options? Can I buy some software? What all does it take to make it work?
There are a number of GPS software packages available: visit www.gpspassion.com for info, reviews, etc. & buy at www.semsons.com or www.buygpsnow.com.
I use Route 66 on my Tytn II, but TomTom version 6 is also very good, and is probably the most popular solution.
there are new ones coming out daily.
yeah TT6 is probably the most popular.
iguidance will text2speech and tell you the street name. Tomtom wont. they both do about the same functionality. iguidance uses more accurate streets. Tomtom has bigger buttons.
that's my $0.02
Am I looking at this right. The software packages are $100 plus?

Right, and worth every penny. They work even when there is no phone service available, very usefull.
tomtom is nice but i like igo more even though it lags a lot more for some reason tomtom is flawless with no lagging.
These programs work with the factory tilt ROM from AT&T? I tried using Windows Live search GPS on the Tilt and it did not work. I tried it on a floor model.
I also tried WLS on a Moto Q Global that I had for 2 days and WLS did not find my GPS either.
I want to get a tilt but I want GPS with WLS and others as well. Would a ROM flash fix this? I was looking at the Sleuth ROM.
I want to know before I try to get one.
I've been running TT6 on my Tilt (stock AT&T rom) since the first week I had the device and it's been fine.
I'm really happy with TT6 as a purchase but I do wish I could plan a route on my PC and then upload it to my phone. I've found TomTom Home (the PC client) to be pretty much usless so far.
Did Windows Live Search work for you? Just curious if it was the floor model that was the issue. I still really want the device even though I have an 8525.

Did you consider the possibility that it didn't work because you were in the store and had no visibility of the sky?? Please tell me you weren't in a shopping mall somewhere trying to do this.
I've tried almost every GPS app out there and every one of them has worked except for Map4PDA. Avoid it like the plague. It will kill your GPS.
You really should try searching the forums. You will find a lot more info. There are TONS of GPS related threads.
I dont think (m)any Kaiser users use or would want to use live search. it's dependent on a signal. Tomtom can be used anywhere on the planet.
to answer your question, try searching http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=346501&highlight=live

OK, now you're comparing WLS to GM. Bad choice because now GM can locate you based on cell towers as well as GPS. WLS can only use GPS.
Either way neither will work well indoors.

What reg setting? I would think it would take much more than a simple reg hack to enable something like that.
it's for our GPS, not wls in specific. Kaisertweak does it. "Assisted GPS"
At least that's my take on what it does.
"Assisted GPS helps the GPS to keep tracking your position when entering areas with bad reception, like tunnels and such. You must have a real GPS lock first for this to work though"

I think a lot of us do. I don't spend much time outside of cell areas. If I ever plan a trip where I think I might, I'll consider the $150 then.
The latest WLS with speech recognition for directory searches is pretty slick considering it's free.

Actually GM has an option to center on GPS. The position with Cell Towers is about a mile off. Obviously I used the GPS.
And again I tried at the store and GM worked with GPS and found where I was at. Then I tried WLS and it found me. But I closed GM and WLS would not find me through GPS any more. So its WLS thats not so good.

I know GM has center on GPS, but it also has Locate Me feature that is unique to GM (uses cell towers). I use both and both work perfectly for me.
GM being a mile off is pretty accurate. They say within 1700 meters, which is almost exactly a mile (1.05633103 miles to be exact).

Run the QuickGPS program to download and cache the GPS satellite position data. Download google maps (www.google.com/gmm) and install it.
Go outside (ie. under an open sky with no obstructions) and run Google Maps. In the menu, choose Use GPS - give it a minute and see if it indicates it's found any satellites, and see if your position is displayed correctly. If it is, then you know your GPS is working fine.
You only pay ATT for navigation if you want to install and use their branded version of Telenav.

@tamkhanh:
I don't know the TT version from the webiste you refer to but TT works.
Goto <Programs> and execute <Quick GPS>
Open TomTom <Agree> tab the screen
A map picture will show, tab the screen again.
Select <change preferences>, go forward (twice I guess) and select <Show GPS status>, <Configure> it should show "built-in GPS receiver>, <select> and let TomTom sit for some time. At the first attempt it may take some time. It helps if you are outside of a building.
Other ways are:
Download google maps
Start
Select <use GPS> and wait.
A good "jumpstarter" is GPS Gate from Framson or so (http://gpsgate.com/)
If all fails I'll give you my acc. # and you can PAY ME for the ridiculous fee AT&T wants to charge for their (BTW 80% cell NOT GPS based) service.

Yes, the ATT Tilt has GPS
It does have a built-in GPS. This same issue threw me off at first too, until I figured it out..
You flamers shouldn't flame the OP. Actual Kaiser and TyTnII owners may already know about the GPS, but the ONLY part of the "AT&T Tilt" documentation referring to GPS is the brief mention of being able to get TeleNav. I know this because I have one. The specs/box mention that it has GPS, but that's all.
Now if I remember correctly, the GPS is COM3 or COM4 by default (unless you changed it in Start->Settings->System->External GPS). I changed mine to COM0 just for the hell of it, and it functions normally.
TomTom should work just fine, set it to 4800 baud, and try it with each COM port available in the options. It sometimes takes a few minutes for TomTom to display that the GPS is in "connected, but no valid signal yet" mode.
If you want to be able to use your Tilt's GPS as an external for some other device, the best thing I've found is GPSGate, but any COM-port splitter should work (as long as it presents a new Bluetooth and/or Serial service)
GPSGate is also useful since you can tell it to log your GPS data to any URL, à la those logging/who-stole-my-phone programs. It can also multiplex the GPS port for use by multiple programs (but I think that functionality is also built into WM and is called the "GPS Intermediate Driver", but I may be mistaken)
Hope this helps!

It is definatly listed in the specs of the phone and it says it on the back of the phone. Why would you consider getting a phone without looking at the specs of it first??

GPS stopped working for my ATT TILT
my GPS was working fine. my tomtom was working fine, googlemaps was working fine. then all of a sudden a few weeks ago it just stopped working! usually i would use GPS test to get a working signal and then I would run tomtom and it would work. a few months ago it started to take a much longer time to acquire a valid gps signal (it would take a few to 5 minutes). but now it just doesnt find one at all! is there anything i could do to try to fix this? what com port should it be on? im thinking i mightve changed one of the settings unknowingly. please help!
