is there a difference between opera mobile and opera mini browser? is it worth the extra money to buy opera mobile instead of using the free opera mini?
Opera mini is a java app, though it is pretty good, I would say even better than opera mobile. But, it might have problem running on some devices depending on which java client the device uses.
would opera mini be just as good as opera mobile on my kaiser?
i recommend opera mobile since it installs as a program which can also be set as your default browser. Opera mini is a java app which is not added as a default browser and you have to load the java app to get to it.
if i was to buy the current opera mobile version, and opera 9 comes out, would i have to buy opera 9 as well, or would opera allow me to upgrade for free?
Opera 8.65 has been "finally" released few days ago.
However, it has few problems with license/registration if you check their website.
As for Opera 9, I am not sure if it will be released this year (or ever be released!).
Opera Mobile 9 = Duke Nukem Forever
I use Opera Mini 4 beta 2 and I must say: best browser ever. Sure, it's a bit anoying that you have to launch the Java app first, but you quickly forget about it when you work with the browser. Perfect experience I must say.
Maarten,
Which midlet manager do you use? JBed?
Can you download files using Opera Mini? I often download .3GP files from the internet
How is the performance when browsing a large site? I found PIE sucks in this area, often stuck and I have to soft-reset.

Much better than PIE.
I alo recommend that you ALL follow the General forum ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256 ) in here as I've answered all the questions asked in this thread there in my Opera Mini 4 beta 2 review ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326368&highlight=Opera+Mini ) and WM Web Browser Bible ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=301009 ).
Last time I used Opera mini I couldn't make a backup of or restore my bookmarks. That's really annoying, when you want to restore a backup or install a new ROM. The pro is that is reduces the internet traffic. Opera mobile is much better when internet traffic is not important.
If I have Pixelbrowser - would adding Opera Mini be redundant ?
Would you just add Opera Mobile for better default support ?
I just installed Opera Mini, and ... it works fine! fast! and nice!
I also created a shortcut and hack the security warning according to this info:
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...ed-includes-info-new-java-midlet-manager.html
Then I changed the "IE button" to load Opera Mini
I like it so much
But there are several things I dont like:
1. When I download .3GP from a link, it will be picked up by Internet Explorer Why cant Opera handle that? I mean asking to download and save ...
2. The browsing History is displayed in the Startup Screen! Can this be disabled?
Anyone know how to fix them?

How!!!???? Please tell!!! I have it loading my midlet manager - but I don't know how to do this.
------------
FYI To do it create a shortcut in notepad on your PC and copy it over to your Start Menu with :
28#"\windows\jbed.exe" -run s0_
where s*_ is the number in the menu where opera is... brilliant!

I have Opera on my Kaiser. 26 days to go for free.
But I have problems being motivated to buy the version.
Anybody an opinion?
Have no problems with IE till now. But maybe I am missing some important features.
Huib
Have you tried "Opera Mini" ?
If not, try it, you will never go back to IE
It is super fast, very compact, and works, also with that neat zoom/unzoom!.
Again, the browsing and rendering speed of Opera Mini is superb.
Drag and scroll.
Highlight and copy text
Save images
Successfully renders web pages more frequently than does the IE - IMHO

Try scrolling down a long page with PIE and you will know why Opera Mini is better. PIE almost grinds to a halt after the first screen or two has scrolled up.
EDIT: Update to above entry. PIE now has a fix for scrolling issue - downloadable here: IE Slow Scroll Fix for Kaiser_Tilt.cab

Hi!
can Opera-mini and other apps be run from the memory card satisfactorily?
i.e are they slower?
I wonder if my other applications such as Resco Explorer 2007 and Code Wallter can be run from the card too?
Ofiaich
Don't take what I say as gospel but when I had Opera installed on the SD card it didn't function completely correct - like didn't follow email links correctly along with a couple of other glitches etc.
Likewise I have always been a bit hesitant to install things that operate so cloely with the OS, like Resco Explorer, to the card. They have always seemd to work much better on the main memory. Just my opinion.
Thus I have Opera mini and Resco Explorer installed on the main memory while just about everything else I have on the SD card.
jcrompton!
Thanks very much! Sounds good to me, and I have space in the main memory!
I will get on and download Opera mini !
Ofiaich
Opera Can Handle Regular Youtube!
Please Dont quote me on this, but if i am correct, Opera (paid version, not mini) can render many types of complicated flash websites including Youtube(Yes the regular one not youtube mobile). I say this because i tested it for myself, a while ago on my mda vario or vario 2 (sorry cant remember). What seemed to be a slight problem though was, it ran out of memory frequently (ram) and as such the program would not start if other applications were running in the background.
Opera users on WM6, your reviews and thoughts on this are much appreciated!

OK - so I just figured out how to get Opera Mini work via the Java app under programs -- have you been able to get email links and other http links to automatically be opened by Opera Mini - I made some registry changes to get Opera Mobile to be the default browser, can you get Opera Mini to do that ? (wasn't sure since it is buried as a Java program)

Well you asked for it. I am going to have to quote you. Youtube does not work on my 8925 in Opera, neither the moble specific version (says media file type not supported) nor the full youtube site. Ugh.
I agree that you wouldn't really want to use Opera Mini on the Kaiser....Opera Mobile though is the bomb! I just wish it was free like the Mini version is, but it's good enough to pay for anyway. PIE just is not very good at rendering most webpages.
opera is very good browser but the built in pie some times show websites better than opera example http:\\www.xda-developers.com

I just hit YouTube with Opera on mine and any 'watch now' links open the video for streaming in WMP. Is that normal?
There is something about me that doesn't like using Internet Explorer. On my phone (Sony Ericsson K850i) I use the Opera Mini 4 Beta browser and love the way that it renders sites and you can zoom in and out etc...
I installed Opera Mobile on my HTC hoping that it would be exactly the same as mini but I was very disappointed Not only does it not have the text for the soft keys but it doesn't accept touch screen inputs for pressing links and text boxes. Also you don't have the zoom in/out function so you have to see a fully rendered screen or and "everything on one column" rendering that cripples the content.
Is there a decent browser for Windows Mobile? What I am looking for is something that works exactly like Opera Mini but with more compatibility with flash etc...
Any ideas?
At the least I would like to be able to install Opera mini but it comes as a .jad file (Java Midlet?). Is there any way of installing these as my Kaiser doesn't know what to do with the file atm.
Thanks for any help
Oliver
There must be someone out there who uses a browser that they're happy with?
Is there a version of Opera that works with the touch screen?
Thanks
You don't have Java on your phone? Opera mini is free and it is a Java Midlet so you could try and see how you like it without spending any money. There is another free browser that I have called Minimo.
LINK to direct CAB download-- http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
It isint the perfect browser either but it does alot of what Opera does and lets you set it with preferences too. Give it a shot and see what you think. Don't like it just remove. I will look on my phone to see if I can extract the Java .exe for you.
I use netfront 3.3 its got better functions than PIE and its back and forward functions using your D-pad is very usefull. as for opera if you want it to scroll like opera mini just enable touch and grab on opera v8.65. it will select links as opera mini does it just wont zoom in like opera mini
Ceck out the articles at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Web Browsing, browsers
picsel browseris my fav. look around enough and you'll find it
Thanks for the replies!
I'll definitely have a look round for the browsers you mentioned.
I would much appreciate it if you could provide a Java app to enable Java on my phone too
BTW, I'm using Schap's latest ROM if that helps.
Im a bit confused here about the op. Am I the only person that has a copy of Opera Mobile that does everything that the op said it doesn,t do? Which version of Opera mobile did you try? I use O.M on my kaiser and everything you said it doesnt do, mine does.. Ive got touchscreen interactivity aswell as touch scrolling, i can zoom in and out, 3 can resize the screen format to desk top, just fit and one column. Im runing Opera mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile Pocket PC. By anychance did you accidentily download the smartphone version?
As above - op must have downloaded opera instead of opera-mini...
I'm posting using o-m and must say it's one of the best if not best browser for the wm platform
WOW!
Just installed Picsel and I love it.
The GUI is a bit dodgy but that's cos it's designed for the clie but I love everything else.
Thanks
(Bit of an effort to find a download though)
Ah, I downloaded the Smartphone version. That's prob why I don't have the touch screen thingy.
BTW Subliminal, there is a difference between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. Opera Mini is what I have on my Sony Ericsson k850i and I would have thought that Opera Mobile worked similarly. It does all the same things but not as smoothly as Opera Mini.
Opera Mini is for Java based phone apps. Opera Mobile is for WM platform.
Opera Mobile has more functions (I think?)
but one main difference is that Opera Mini is free whereas opera mobile isn't.
A direct shortcut can be created to launch opera mini without the need to load the java midlet first. A quick hex edit can skip the connection permissions and another quick tinker can allow direct links from emails to open in opera mini. Sounds more work than it is.
Ive just been checking out the Netfront v3.4 technical preview
https://www.access.co.jp/english/nfppc/agree_34.html
its alot better than v3.3 and has some very nice features. its got a similar zoom feature to opera mini4 its a scroll and zoom. plus the visual bookmark is nice also. I cant wait for it to go to retail I will be getting it. opera9 will be ready soon also but ive not seen a preview of it yet. from what ive read though its also going to be alot better than v8.65 and incorperate feature of mini opera4 like the page zooming
I've just downloaded opera mini 4 and have installed it onto my phone.
I have one querey.......
when I was instaling it and when I first used it, it say
this program is connecting to .......port 1080...... requires airtime..... you maybe chaged.....
does this mean my phone isn't using the wifi connection when im running opera mini 4?

Mmmm... don't reach the solution ;-( , even after modifying the browser settings. Always the same message...

dolbe, can you give me your settings for this great browser ?
MS DeepFish is the best browser I've seen yet. It's in Beta for now though and has limitations. It's similar to Iphone's Safari - which is great.
Opera Mobile 9 will support zooming, just like Opera Mini. I asked Opera for a release date, but they won't say anything. It's supposed to be released "soon".
What is in your opinion the best browser (last version) for our Kaiser instead of Explorer.
I never tried Mozilla Minimo or Netfront...any feedback?
For quick n easy when on GPRS Opera Mini
If on 3G OR wifi then opera mobile.
I've tried the rest and these are the best IMHO
I've tried Minimo and found it absolutely useless. Was not impressed with Opera Mini, but Opera 8.65 is Impressive.
I've never tried Netfront but I would like to.
To be honest I'm not sure that these kinds of thread get us very far - and often lead to arguments.
The best advice is try them all yourself and lookup Menneisyys guides as he does a superbly dtailed round up of these.
Having said the above, I'll ignore it and say this:
Another vote for Opera Mini's latest version (very fast and actually a nice set of features and viewing options - great on the road) Free so you can have it anyway alongside any other browser
PIE is actually pretty decent IF you install the slow scroll fix CAB (without the CAB installed forget it)
I also use Opera Mobile. Actually I sometimes run bothe PIE and Opera mobilesimultaneously- there are some sites that just render better on some browsers than others and it's not always consistently the same browser. So that's my choice or rather my three.
Mike

honestly i have found opera mini the abs. best hands down..the only thing i can say that it should add is a way to have more than one window. but thats it.

Let me disagree - if you know the right hacks/ shortcuts, Opera Mini is by far the easiest to use. Particularly now with the bookmark sync features between your mobile device(s) and desktop browser(s) - it REALLY rules!
I use PIEPlus
opera mini by far

v8.65 for PPC works great here.
yep the PPC one is diffrent, its the high memory version.
so ppc version for smartphone correct?
What's the big advantage of Opera Mobile over Opera Mini? I like that Mobile is native, but Mini has the zoom in/out feature that makes it really nice to use. I heard Mobile 9 is going to have that feature, but is there some other reason to spend money on 8.65?
Seems like a big mix up in this thread.
You have a ppc , not a smartphone.
So download the ppc version.
And the high memory version refers to opera mini only!
Opera mini is not the same as opera mobile.
Opera mobile is a full stand alone web browser.
Opera mini is a java app , nice browser tho but a completely different program.
java would generaly performe worse then native pocketpc applications
but not sure if the compress pages thing of mini mean that it's load times are generaly better but the general performce is lower for java and also .net applications
prob less for .net as ms prob put some efford into making .net faster then the verious java midlets makers to save face

Opera mini is a super fast browser but some of it's functionality is scaled down. In general, you should be able to download from mini... but not as robust as others.
IMO Opera 9.5 (official version not released yet) is very promising. It has a very good download manager, browses similar to Opera Mini and is much more robust in terms of overall browser functionality, certificates, etc. It's worth a look. It's beta is all over this board if you do a search.
