Dialer Scrolling Annoyance - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

when i place a phone call my normal procedure is:
1: press the green phone button
2: slide the keyboard out
3: begin typing a few letters of the name
4: use the arrow key on the keyboard to scroll down to the persons name <--- this is very important
5: hit return and talk
i am finding that i am unable to use the arrow keys to scroll down to select a contact on the Tilt as opposed to the HTC 6800. remember, i'm already have the kb open at this point and would prefer to just continue using it.
this then requires me to pull out the stylus or try and nail tap the contacts name from the list that appears.
it seems to only way to scroll through is to select Contacts first, start typing a few letters then scroll down and click the name then scroll some damn more and tell the phone to call. this strikes me as gratuitious.
has anyone else experience this annoyance and if so, has anyone found a solution?
i tried replacing the dialer with the touch dialer but it seems to simply skin the same lame functionality.
please advise.

I understand you want to use the kb at this point, but how hard is it to just raise your left thumb up 1.5" and use the D-pad?

I can duplicate the problem, but I've got a similar "OK... But..." comment.
Why use the keyboard? When the phone pops up, start tapping the numbers associated with the letters in the name and it'll intelligently start filtering the list. Then use a finger or the D-pad to select the one you want.

ok - i had never really done that. im just so comfortable typing on the qwerty kb that that has always been the method i have used which worked up until this phone.
only irritant i can find with the dialpad method is there is no space key for first letter first name first letter last name.
i can live with it i guess but its not nearly as bling when yer tapping on the dial pad like every other phone out there instead of using your kick ass slide out keyboard.

the habit may have transfered from my days with a treo where you simply type the name and dial.
very convenient.

Thumb-friendly keyboard (PocketCM alternative)?

PocketCM is good, but I'm looking for something better. Even though PocketCM doesn't require a stylus, I'm still having a horrible time typing with it.
What I'm looking for is a thumb-friendly, on-screen keyboard that'll take advantage of predictive text to allow larger buttons. Something like the Blackberry Pearl keyboard (1 or 2 letters per key), or even the traditional phone pad (with 3-4 letter per key) would be enough.
Anyone have a suggestion?
cootek touchpal is the best i've tried.

Thanks! Searching now.
Here's the link to Cootek Touchpal, its the best http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334437
Did you spell it right? A search revealed nothing...
**EDIT
Got link, thanks!
Thanks for the recommendation! It works great!
Three questions:
1) Is this free until December, when I'll have to register it?
2) Is there any way to move the space button to the center (and why is it on the left in the first place?)
3) What is "precise" mode supposed to do?

hold down the spacebar and drag to the middle and it'll move
precise mode appears to take away predictive text so you have to rely on finger slides to get the right characters.

Thanks for the tip. I tried precise mode after I posted an it was horrendous.
I'm still getting used to the program. There are a few things I don't like about it:
1) It takes up a lot of screen space. I would like to see a smaller key option
2) It doesn't always remove itself from the screen when you leave a text area
3) There is no way to spell words efficiently, for example:
I wanted to type "download". I enter "down", but as soon as I hit the "L" button, the letters "down" change to something else. You have to accept "down" as the word, backspace over the space that is automatically entered, then finish the word. PITA.
It's not for one thumb but Spb Full Screen keyboard is the best I've used. I actully don't use the Kaiser keyboard and type 3 times faster with Spb. Also try Tengo its a one thumb kb with big keys.
Touchpal is nice ive used it before.. Im still waiting for PocketCM to release a newer versions as i had some issues with the current version..
As for another one, I flashed my Tilt to the AKU cooked rom thats floating around the forums and there is actually a SIP that is a phone pad that supports T9 input and I find it very handy and works well for one handed operations!
Touchpal is the best in my opinion. Once you get the feel of it you can really type fast.
Yes a slight reduction in hight would be good. I suggest if they half the height of the top row which contains the various options we could benefit with some more screen real estate.
try to go to the htc asia website and download the official phone pad from HTC! I really find it useful!!
where can i get Spb Full Screen keyboard ?

yeah it is a slight learning curve, but once you get used to it it'll be the best sip out the there! I got the same thing when trying to spell download, but after spelling out by using the sliding function, it showed up everytime when using the predictive mode! it just takes a little getting used to!
Well, now that I've been using it for a while, I have several big problems. I don't know who to blame (M$ or Cootek), but here they are:
1) The program will only work if I use it in conjunction with sipchange. Once I do that, I cannot select any other keyboard. They come up in the choice list, but if I select them, nothing happens. So I'm stuck with it. If I'm using the stylus, I prefer the standard windows keyboard, which is why this is an issue
2) The program does not go down and stay down. Unlike the standard windows keyboard, TouchPal is always popping up in your face. It drives me nuts, as I only seem to actually need it 1/4 of the time it decides to pop up. It seems to take 2-3 times minimizing it for it to finally stay down... and when it does, it can pop up again for absolutely no reason.
3) It may be the most the most intuitive keyboard, but it's still not very "finger-friendly". I don't consider myself to have unusually large hands, but I still cannot reliably hit the right key every time, even when I'm careful. Another thing it will do is detect a capital letter (diagonal motion) when I very clearly touched it without a swipe. Not sure why this is...
I'm still in search of something better....

I'm curious about the same thing. I love the Fx mode that the Resco keyboards offer.

Typing - T9 - QWERTY

As the title suggests I'm having a problem with typing using the T9 on the QWERTY keyboard.
When start typing a word it gives me 4 suggestions. I can click on any of the 4 suggestions to chose it, or press space to accept the 1st suggestion.
Almost every time I click on one of the other 3 suggestions it starts writing it out where my cursor is, and then jumps to another part of the text / email / forum post etc... so that the first few letters are in the right place, and the rest is randomly placed.
Anyone else having this problem, and is there a way to get all the text in the right place?!!
I find that choosing the word from the list using the hardware button D pad on the diamond solves the problem, which I forget to do sometimes and when I point on the screen to the word I want it does what you say.
Hope this helps!
Thanks... I will try that next time!
The other option is just to type the actual word you want I suppose.
I wonder why it jumps lines?

Spelldial

I absolutely love this little app, one of my must have's on the g1. I love the fact that it combines dialer, contacts and one touch dialing. The one pet peeve i had when i first got dash was the fact i had to do 2 clicks to dial someone, maybe thats lazy but when im at work it really saves time and headache! Anyone else using it, like it?
Its good, but it needs some work IMO.
I really missed the feature from WM where you could T9 someones name and it will display there number. Spelldial just misses the mark slightly....
1)Only shows mobile numbers. Would be nice if you could side swipe and choose other nubmers from the contact
2)Doesnt have a backspace button. I have no way of clearing a number if I have pressed it by mistake.
I keep checking for an update to this app because its a cracking feature.

1) if you click on the entry it takes you to their contact info on your phone.
2)i use the delete keey on the keyboard, works great for me.
Backspace
to backspace just swipe to the left over the name youve typed in
I am currently using Superdial because it can display the call log. However it is much less responsive than Spelldial. Spelldial is very responsive...... I will be great if it can show call log and can be set as default dialer.

Three problems with handcent

Wondering if any of this can be changed/disabled:
1. After voice inputting text, whole input is highlighted so if i press back but only one word was misspelled the entire input self-deletes.......
2. When attempting to correct text, I get this large annoying box with a "Tt" or something in it that looks like a font selection, I need it to go away.
3. when I voice input "gets" and it only shows up with "get", then I select the space where the "s" needs to be added and it suggests the entire word "gets".......so it looks like :
get|
gets|getting
and if i select the change it becomes
getgets
it's about as bad as it gets........any help on fixing these three issues would be greatly appreciated
I know this isn't going to be much help but I had the same annoyances with Handcent, so I switched to Go SMS...no major problems just small things that bother a person OCD but not a normal person lol
These problem might be keyboard base. I used Swype and didn't notice problem 2 and 3.
anyone else?

For 1 touch somewhere in the text to unselect everything and put the cursor where you want it.
2 the T box is a context menu for text editing: cut, copy, paste.
3 (on swype anyway thats all I use)select the word and double tap that will bring up the word choice window and selecting the correct word will replace it instead of just inserting it there with both of them.
Hope that helps...
Your best bet might be to ask in the Hancent forums. I also had a few issues with it so went to Go sms myself and am enjoying it alot.

Dialer has no keyboard

Anyone notice if you open the Phone app the box in the middle says "Enter name or number" but there is no way to get the keyboard to pop up to begin typing. Am I missing a setting for the keyboard to pop up?

type the name out on the numeric keypad. Or you could do like I did, and remove the phone icon on the launcher, and replace it with the contacts icon(you can get to the phone in the contacts app). I prefer it this way anyways.
Just press the numbers with the letters of the name you're looking for and the matching names will appear above. My name is Patrick so if I press 728 all the names starting with "Pat" appear.
Of course, it has a dial pad. Guess you have just minimized it. Please refer to attached screenshot on how to bring it up again...

I don't think that is what he was referring to. he was asking why the keyboard wold not come up. As in, the numeric keypd is there, but the alpha keyboard was not.

Yes you are exactly right, on my Moto X the keyboard will pop up. If I use the dialpad and continue to type a name out using the letters on each number eventually it will bring up the contact I am looking for but it's certainly not as fast or intuitive as Moto's dialer.
As mentioned using the Contacts app this is even slower as you have to hit the search icon then start typing then decide how you want to communicate with that person(phone, text, email)

There may only be one extra tap in contacts app process. so, not really all that much slower. My next option to you, would be to check out ExDialer, or another dialer app.
