Today I have received an e-mail from pbxes.org which is the service that is recommended to be used with Sipdroid app that's made by i-p-tel.com
Contents of the e-mail:
Gizmo5, Inc. a VoIP carrier recently violated our copyright
held for the Sipdroid application which we made open source
under the GPL (GNU Public License).
Gizmo removed the copyright notice and published the software
in their name, and without making the modified source available
(thus breaking the GPL, too).
We believe this as highly abominable behavior disrespecting the
work of program authors.
Please understand that we will start to block Gizmo from our servers
within the next 24 hours. We recommend to change your routings to
other carriers as soon as possible.

Does anyone know any more details about this? I've tried search both pbxes.org and gizmo5.com -- neither provides any insight into the situation.
For all that matters, I'd actually want to try that ripped program

I can only assume they mean this:
http://gizmo5news.blogspot.com/2009/07/phone-without-paying-phone.html
http://nosimcard.blogspot.com/
http://gizmo5.com/guava.html
Ironically this makes perfect sense; a <really bad> voip service with no customer support ripping off a <really bad> sip client with poor compatibility. It's like a match made in heaven.
Of course the irony is that i'm actually currently using both.
The only thing unfunny about this situation (if true) is the GPL violation. Companies that rip GPL code without obeying the terms of the license are lower than the lowest scum.
Edit: modded myself. Replace really bad with expletives for original emphasis.
Thanks for that, I guess I should have searched better
I'm just wondering if pbxes.org won't hurt themselves by this blockage. I mean their service is difficult to configure in the first place, that's why I use Gizmo5 servers directly. And my guess is that many people will do the same, bypassing pbxes.org altogether.

Gizmo seems to have some kind of special relationship with Google Voice team too (it's the only voip service that can be forwarded to from GV). I wonder how Google will play this, considering Pascal addressed a letter to Google regarding the GPL breach. Google cannot act in a legal basis, but it can shutdown its exclusive Gizmo forwarding, which would pretty much kill this little "GUAVA" project. There's no situation where iptel gains from this whole debacle, but technically and legally they are in the right here.
It's really a shame that whoever is doing this at Gizmo isn't just contributing code to the sipdroid project normally. Maybe he/she thinks that Pascal won't give him project write access due to conflicting interests (as Pascal is also CEO of iptel).

'cept most of pbxes clients are businesses who have an IT staff to configure the boxes.
Haha I love fakes like this. They tend to make me laugh
This email I just got for example, heres the text;
"Subject: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
From: [email protected]
Due to your contribution to the success of Android Market, we would like to present you with a brand new Android device as part of our developer device seeding program. You are receiving this message because you're one of the top developers in Android Market with one or more of your applications having a 3.5 star or higher rating and more than 5,000 unique downloads.
In order to receive this device, you must click through to this site, read the terms and conditions of the offer and fill out the registration form to give us your current mailing address so that we can ship your device.
You will receive either a Verizon Droid by Motorola or a Nexus One. Developers with mailing addresses in the US will receive either a Droid or Nexus one, based on random distribution. Developers from Canada, EU, and the EEA states (Norway, Lichtenstein), Switzerland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore will receive a Nexus One. Developers with mailing addresses in countries not listed above will not receive a phone since these phones are not certified to be used in other countries.

The page it links to is (link changed just in case). I like the way it's on Google Sites instead of a real Google webpage, and the registration form is just an inlay of Google Docs with some info. Not sure I can see a point in this one, since it doesn't ask for any critical information except address & phone number, but pretty funny none the less lol.
EDIT: Also, by the way, I am a developer on the market with an app that meets the criteria, so it is targeted at the right person, but I just think it seems fake lol.
EDIT 2: AndroidAndMe is reporting it, it appears to be legit.
oops, ****. I filled it in O_O
reported the site though?, not sure how much they can get with that little bit of info...
and just for the record, google has used google docs before for forms.
I used one for switching my gvoice from one account to another

Thats what I was wondering too. I figure I'll wait and see if I see anything else about it, the requirements are pretty lax, so I figure quite a few people got it. I'll see what people say and if it turns out real I'm all for it lol.
Well it sounds kind of "too good to be true" and when it does it usually is.
However, check the mail headers. The sending server is one known to be used for Google mass mailings. Check for example
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdSense/thread?tid=127d121c2bc9d7a1&hl=en
It also seems like all the IP's involved checks out (ie are real Google IP's)
I got one of these mails as well and I do qualify. Sure hope it's legit.

Thats what I thought. What throws me off is it being on a Google Site instead of a real Google hosted page. I filled it out, since there is no personal info required really, and I hope its legit, but I don't hold high hope lol
The headers seem to be legit, and Google has used Google Sites before (the Wave Developer preview signup was through a Google Site). Unless someone hacked Google servers to send people emails just to steal peoples' addresses, order numbers (quite useless), and phone numbers.
Update: I see a lot of people think this offer is too good to be true and have concerns of a phishing scam. I’ve reached out to my contact at Google and will post a response if I get one. From what I can tell, the email appeared to be legit.
Update 2: Roman Nurik, Android Developer Relations for Google, states that this is real on the official Android Developers Google Group.
Update 3: I received a second confirmation from an official Google spokesperson.
“A thriving developer community is an important part of creating a better mobile experience for users around the world. We hope that offering devices to developers will make it easier for them to create and test great applications. This is inline with other efforts to support developers, which also includes our Android Developer Labs World Tour and our upcoming participation at the Game Developers Conference.”

Hot damn! I hope I gets me mah Nexus!! Lmao
I could always use another Nexus...one for each hand
I think this is great. Gives the developers reason to keep working. Looks like google actually has taken notice. Good for all.
Hey all!
Is anyone using Google Hangouts? What's the deal there? Anyone use it for work to chat with colleagues if international?
I'm really bad with these social new inventions, so trying to catch up with the speed, so if any one has an scenarios to share, that would be awesome!
Most of the time people hangout just to have some random discussions.
It's simple, try not to be a jerk and don't join hangouts when you don't have a webcam.

Thanks! Are there any sites with hangout lists based on subject?

Go on... have a guess how I found this
http://gphangouts.com/
Well, haven't used. Still old-fashioned!
Long story short.... I recently bought an Android stick for my TV and bought a webcam for it so I could video Skype with mates. The first one I bought wasn't compatible so I bought another one (they were both cheap and cheerful).
Since I now have a spare one I hooked it up to my PC and decided to give public hangouts a try.
My above link doesn't work for public hangouts, and I've searched on G+ for #hangoutpost which does find some, but does anyone know a way to find all public hangouts? I've been in a couple but want to find more to give it a real try.
google hangout is pretty useful. its a free up-to-6 webcam pretty much. cool features are you can play some games (not sure which ones), you can all watch the same youtube video and comment on it and stuff, and its just pretty clean. when someone talks it puts that person on the main screen and transitions pretty well
Hello, I recently switched from ios to android, google disadvantage now see that (in my opinion) do not fulfill specific functions, we changed the English but still not correctly answer general types: how's the weather today nearby restaurants etc.. What is your opinion about google now?
I always think that google now is in development, cuz first of all is the voice engine its pretty "mechanical".That's all
You will be told soon comparison threads are not allowed.. Prepare for thread closure..
Let's put it this way:
Siri:
"What's the weather like today?" "Are you sure you want to delete all contacts?" "No! No! No! I didn't ask you to do that!" "Delete Confirmed."
Click to collapse
Google Now:
Open the app
Look at the weather card. (Usually the first thing you see when you go in the app)

Google now has handy "cards" for you to view wherever you are. Like what restraunts are nearby, Photo locations, Traffic information, ETA to Home/Work etc.
You don't need to ask it anything most of the time, although you can ask simple questions such as "How old is (Insert famous person here)" or "How tall is (Insert Famous Person here)" or "When was (Insert building/landmark here) built?" and it'll often tell you the answer
What I've heard from people is if you live in the US and speak US english, like me, it's by far better than anything else out there. If you don't live here / don't speak US english, it's not that great. I've never tried any other language or country so I can't tell, but for me, Google now is miles ahead of siri. Cortana is actually pretty good though.
Thanks for the opinions guys, one more question, I have to search the motor google.us or have active locations to benefit from all functions of the application? thanks

Google search is normally set to your local one (I.e if you are in the US, you'll be automatically searching with the US one)
You need to have active location (GPS) to get the best benefit from all the function.
It needs to know where you are so it can show those cards with information relevant to your current location but hey, at least you don't have to keep on asking it questions!

Siri feels like an assistant.I cant say the same for google now.Its my personal opinion

To be honest I don't see much of a difference in what they do, besides their names and companies. After all, Google is my favorite search engine and database, and I definitely prefer Google Maps over Apple's, so Google Now does a pretty awesome job for me. Siri/Google Now would not really affect my purchasing decision in any case.
I really like the functions of Google Now. It's more helpful and able to provide information when I need it. However, to enable the full functionality of Google Now means Google Service Framework is running all the time and producing a huge amount of wakelocks... Which means a lot of battery drainage.
So I would say neither one of these meets my expectation...Hope GSF could get better
I think Google Now "understands" your requests better, but maybe it is microphone related... I dont know anybody using any of these services because it affords more time getting what you want.
i prefer google now. looks a lot cleaner and more accurate imo.
Although I have never used an iPhone except for demo kiosks, I hear nothing but terrible things. Can't remember who did it but there was a Youtube video comparing the two when they came out. Siri for some reason kept wanting to talk about horses.

yah i like google now
I don't like any of the Google Apps included Google Now because it's waisting all your RAM memory!
And it stays running in the background.
I have only used S-Voice when i was on stock but i'm now on custom rom and now i'm don't using a siri anymore.
Siri Apps are defenitly better then any other !
I have had the iphone 4s firmware updates and enjoy siri, was an addition more than useless over to the friends. I have now and s-voice s4 is something less mechanical than siri in the sense of the daily use
rivalstorm v.1 with Tamirda's mod
I know this is very unscientific, but whenever I meet someone who uses an iphone, I ask if they use siri. Most don't. Not everyone uses google voice search either, but it seems like more do. Take from that what you will. As for me, I love google's voice search. It has rarely failed me.
I have to admit, Siri is fun. And many people just use it for entertainment purposes.
Google Now is mainly used for help and knowledge. And I use it everyday. Its a great way of doing tasks while you're a bit busy.
Defenitly Siri

Hey there, long time no chat in this forum
So, with all the recent censorship scandal by big companies such as Twitter and Facebook, many 'suspicious' things have been happening recently. For example, with Twitter's suspension of Trump's personal account, people has been moving on to Parler (a somewhat more "free-speech" oriented alternative to Twitter). But yesterday, Google removed the app from the Play Store and Apple threatened with doing the same if they don't adjust their censorship policies.
Of course, non-jailbroken iPhone users are screwed with the app and have to use the web version, but Android users are still able to download it via 3rd-party app stores and websites such as apkpure. And considering this last bit I ask you:
Do you think Google would be willing to make Android closed source to enforce their censorship policies in the future?
Hope to read yout thoughts on this one
no lol calling it censorship is pretty dumb imo
Don't see it on the horizon...

I really don´t think so, but I think (in the future) that using certain features and having full access to the device will be more complicated, such as Huawei's devices, you literally need to register and get their permission to get the bootloader unlocked.
What I see in the recent censorship is that it's all about Trump and the extremists following him, and this demonstrates two things:
1) Twitter is clearly not supporting Trump as it's becoming more and more out of control.
2) Twitter always said it was for free speech, but when they saw that free speech is what gathered the BuffaloMan and his fellows at Capitol Hill, well, then free speech became a danger.
So if you plan to overthrow some african or asian government, they will let you do it, but if you try to overthrow the government of US, then it becomes a problem
In any case, Twitter, Google, Apple, and all the other companies are private, independent companies, with their own regulations. In my opinion there's nothing wrong if they block someone or some products in their platform or store. It's like a golf club banning a member or a shop owner not selling anymore a product.
If Trump wants to start his own social network, he can do it, unless what he does on the site is against US laws.
So, in conclusion, i'm not worried about Android becoming closed source, as this wave of censorship regards a specific group of people, and also because being open source is what made Android's wide success possible. And while Android is successful, Google can push their already closed source Play Services on the devices.
I hope not....
When I saw this thread title, I feared that this was recent news and the ROM scene was over. When I read this thread, I took a sigh of relief even if the post is complete nonsense. To answer your question: No, Android is not going closed source and nobody is censoring anybody. If Android were to go closed source it would have to find an entirely different kernel to use as the Linux kernel is open source and open sourceness is a key principle for Linux-based OSes. And Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc are all private companies and get to decide who can and can't use their platforms.
I don't think that Android will be a closed source. Actually I believe Android market will grow. I even decided to create an app both for Android and iOS. Not just for iOS. Easy to do so with modern technologies https://itmaster-soft.com/en/cross-platform-app-development Sooo I'm sure Android will be fine
