HSUPA was turned on in LA today. You might need to enable UPA on the Tilt via a registry hack because it is disabled. SaN diego and San Fran in November
How do you enable it? What are the reg edits?

enable HSPA
Is there a rollout schedule somewhere?
Nationwide by the end of the year
Nice, wonder if I'll get good reception at UCLA.

Which HSUPA category (1-5)? They range from <1 to about 6 Mbits/s. I am currently getting .75 Mbit/s with my 3G service in San Diego.

UCLA is well covered. Try it and report. AT&T will not enable the UPA on the tilt because it will congest the Uplink traffic. I hope the hack works
Try it and report to us otherwise the only official device with UPA is the Sierra Wireless card 881U

A little more granularity in the timeline would be nice.
As in, which metropolitan markets will get it when. Of course I'm interested if my area is on or at least scheduled to be on. With my current ~260k upload speed, methinks it's not on yet.

Actually, you can enable/disable HSDPA with the Control Panel/Settings option.
The KaiserTweak Prog (and thus the corresponding teg tweak) toggles HSPA (which is HSDPA + HSUPA). At least that's what I thought.

Well according to the Kaiser Tweak XML
<key mode="set" setvalue="1" when="value" whenvalue="0">HKLM\Software\OEM\RIL\EnableHSDPAIcon</key>
<key mode="set" setvalue="0" when="value" whenvalue="1">HKLM\Software\OEM\RIL\EnableHSDPAIcon</key>
<description>Enable HSPA on devices that support HSPA but do not have the Settings applet that enables it, like the Tilt. Enabling this will make your data connection much much faster if your provider supports it.

ok cool - i didn't actually look into what it did. I never installed it on mine. thanks for clearing it up. So, yes, if there is a separate reg item to enable HSUPA, that would be good to know.
It seems to be active in Dallas too
Based on my H icon indication. HSUPA seems to be active in Dallas today.
Love it in metro detroit...fast as can be. I get it hit and miss. Question, how much faster is it when I have the 'H' than it is when I have the '3g'?
The H could just mean HSDPA, not HSUPA.
Right... HSUPA is uplink speed improvement. Not sure how much that is worth overall though since most data travels over the downlink (HSDPA). Would be useful if you were hosting a vidcam on your Kaiser tho....

I'm here in the middle of San Francisco. I just ran a test at www.dslreports.com/mspeed and NEVER saw the 3G icon change. I got 120 kbit/sec.
Anyone know if I need to do something to get it to switch to HSDPA? Anyone else in SF able to get higher speeds on this test?
Robert
If HSDPA / 3G coverage is available in your area, the phone will detect it - assuming that Settings > Connections > HSDPA > Turn on HSDPA is enabled.
Network speed performance can be affected by any number of factors including how heavy the network is being used by subscribers.
see here too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1567369#post1567369

Possible Problem with No 3G
First, is this your first 3G device, from Cingular? If so, they may have skipped the "change of technology" step in the upgradeing process...I worked for Congular for 2 years...If they didn' do a change of technology you will only get edge speeds...Hope it helps....

Hmmm, good point, my account online shows a line under the features list of "UMTS Compatible". I *thought* you wouldn't get the 3G icon either w/o that but not sure. FWIW I was getting HSDPA in some parts of the SFO airport last week and not others, so you just might be unlucky...
Richard
not sure if this would help but, how old is your sim card? does it say 3G on it?
I just switched to AT&T so the sim card is new. In an earlier post, isdereks said to go to settings > Connections > HSDPA.
Well, that may be the problem. In Connections, I don't have an icon that says HSDPA.
Thoughts?
thx
Robert
After you got your tilt, did you do cancel the custimizations to avoid having the bloatware loaded on your device? I read at the AT&T forums that one of the consequences of doing this is that you lose HSDPA from the connections tab:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=56257&page=2
Maybe this is what happened to you? If it did, you could do a hard reset and it will appear again with all teh bloatware.

Nope. Didn't cancel anything. In fact the list of "missing programs" on that link you posted are ALL on my device EXCEPT the HSDPA program in settings.
Any other ideas?

Same here. I have a Tilt that also does not have the HSDPA setting in options. I use it in Wilmington, Delaware which is a 3G area. I also never get the H symbol when transferring data. However, on the dslreport speed test I get a speed of 432kbps. Might there be a registry setting that serves the same function as the HSDPA button under Connections?
P.S. I did not cancel auto customization and this is a brand new phone with only Opera installed.
432bps is above the 3G Max of 384kbps, so I'm guessing you're in fact in 3G+ already even if the logo isn't there. I get about the same speed with the logo on.

Not in mine. Anyone else see this? FYI, I have 3G icon on ALL the time. Well, once yesterday I saw something else (I think it was E). I have never seen H and I've never seen speeds above 200kbps.
And unless I'm wrong, HSDPA is in a lot of the bay area. Any way to determine for sure if HSDPA is in the areas I frequent? Map?

Now that was a good post. Good amount of info. No I hadn't checked "show all files." When I did that, I saw the file you were mentioning. HSDPA was checked.
I had not installed any 3G icon. It's just always been showing 3G (except briefly E over the weekend). Never seen H in 3 days. Never been above 200kbps.

strange - i haven't seen a 3g icon - but see H all the time - but i have done some tweaking - and enabled HSDPA as described above.
sounds like you are in a 3g area most of the time - hopefully you get HSDPA as well.
just reread the post - noticed you said HSDPA was checked - Not sure why you don't get faster speeds - have seen > 1000k
there is also an "enable HSDPA icon" registry setting - don't know of HSDPASwitch sets this or not - i will take a look for it -would at least let you know if the phone thinks it is in HSDPA

To restore the "H" icon when HSDPA data is in use, there's a registry tweak - thanks to HiwayFuzz for the tip:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\RIL and set EnableHSDPAIcon to 1
ok... so i just wanted to post this ... this just happened today, it was not like this yesterday... but my phone has displayed a constant H today, where as before it would only show that when downloading... so i decided to upload some large files to my ftp server, and i used IP Dashboard to monitor the upload... check out my upload transfer rate...
I think the H stands for HSDPA, not HSUPA. The difference is primarily in the upload speed (that's what the U stands for), but most service providers only provide HSDPA at this time, not HSUPA.

U is for UMTS... H is for HSDPA/HSUPA
ATT has been slowly rolling out HSUPA in its major market areas... Did you look at the pic and notice the upload speed?
Previous behavior of the indicator was 3G, would only switch to H when downloading data on HSDPA... now its a constant H and i get fast UP/DOWN access..

Ok, my understanding was that all 3G and faster connections use UMTS, and HSDPA/HSUPA are advancements of the UMTS protocol. The manual only makes reference to HSDPA, so I guessed it didn't support HSUPA.
The upload speed looked like it fell within the HSDPA range, but I'm not very good with the whole kbps vs. kB/s conversion thing!

I live in the St. Louis area and got 600 kbit/sec. It doesn't say whether that was up or down. That's on my AT&T Tilt.
650kbit/sec (1mb dl)
See attached file. My signal out at my place is a lot lower than I get elsewhere in the city. This is from Portland, OR...
sweet deal!
@ Shogunmark
is there a .cab for that IP Dashboard app that you can post? I would really like to start testing the upload speeds in the DFW area. At&t keeps saying any day now for HSUPA.
For those of you who want to test the upload speed of your Tilt, I would recommend using the Intenet Sharing app and tethering to a PC/Laptop. That way you can just use dslreports.com
I got 673kbit/sec
0.406s latency
5.158s d/l time
Phoenix/metro area - AZ
My Tilt shows the H icon 99% of time, have seen it drop to 3G and E in areas I have low signal strength.

HSDPA has an uplink of 384kbps.
Here in Singapore, I am using HSDPA, and the uplink can hit 370+kbps as well.
Officially, Kaiser is not supporting HSUPA, although the chip supports it.
good news
this is definitely good new as I live in metro detroit and in a very large 3G area. today the 20th we haven't changed over yet still showing 3G. on a side note I was ith tmobile and just came to att with my kaiser. with tmobile my results were 80-150 kbps with att 3G they are 500 kbps-850 kbps

Not so sure i believe that myself...U was the old 3G icon that was used in early WM5 builds, but most people call it 3G, not UMTS so they changed it.
@d3us. you do realise that HSDPA and HSUPA are the same thing in different directions right? it's not an either or thing. they work together at the same time. HSDPA is the download link and HSUPA is the upload link.
So if you have enabled it, and your network supports it, and it is enabled on your account.....you should be using both HSDPA and HSUPA when you see the H icon, but for most of the time, and unless you are sending serious amounts of data, you'd never notice it just browsing, watching youtube and using messenger.
however, sending emails with huge attachments....then you might notice it.
I don't know if it's enabled on my account, that's why I was wondering, then the only way to know is to test my upload rate.
yeah you wont see any difference on the display.
your upload will just be alot faster
what network you on?
AFAIK, in the UK, the only network that has turned HSUPA on for their whole network is t-mobile. although as they share with 3, i wouldn't be surprised if they had it as well.
if your on any of the other UK networks, or in another country, i can't tell you i'm afraid.
3 in Denmark says that they don't support HSUPA but I still get a much higher upload when I enable it
it could well be that they are working to launch it and have just not announced it yet. Vodafone in the UK had HSDPA for a couple of months before they actually announced it to the public.....
Still, if you're getting the higher speeds, that's pretty sweet!
I'm using Orange in France, they should have deployed the HSUPA in some cities since January but I can't test now since I'm still on holidays using an EDGE connection^^
Orange claims HSUPA improve the ping, I hope it's true.

I've been curious about this too. O2 doesn't have a 3G license, which is why they used the Jap technology i-mode (which as we know flopped). So where is the iPhone's 3G coming from? I think it's from '3', but I'm not 100%. So if you're not in a '3' coverage area I would guess this is why you don't reception on this band.

LOL (H) = HSPDA
HSPDA=7.5Mbps Approx making it a shed load faster than 3G
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are available with HSPA+, which provides speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s downlink.

So I have, after reading many sets of instructions on this site decided not to attempt changing the rom on my TyTAN II. Is there any software available that I can use with my current phone configuration that will allow me to take advantage of the HSDPA network?
Download either Pocket Toolman 2 ......or....... Kaiser Tweak. With either of these programs you can enable the use of HSDPA.
I'm pretty sure that "enabling" HDPA is just basically enabling the icon.. Please, do speed tests tethered via USB before and after and report your results.
Testing the speed in-phone or tethered bluetooth won't give appropriate results.

HSDPA speed in-phone is about 800 Kbits\sec
HSDPA speed Tethered is about 1800 Kbits\sec

You know, you really should give flashing a try. Not too long ago I was just like you, unwilling to flash a very expensive piece of equipment. I went so far as to purchase a used 8525 and used it as my guinea pig. Needless to say, once i saw how simple it was, i had no reservations doing it on my tilt. Additionally, there are a few sites on these forums that will instruct you how to return your phones rom and SPL back to manufacturer's specs for warranty trade-in/repair. Give it a shot, it may look daunting when read, but is truely quite simple. And people here are always willing to help, even if you duplicate a thread!
