Tilt ATT HSDPA and the 3g rollout - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I am in Denver and my local store told (the people i bough the phone from) me that on Oct 15th the Denver area woudl get 3g and HSDPA but i have nether. i have found threads where people say you need to do a reg edit to turn on high speed internet? is this true? is there anyone using a Tilt on a ATT 3g HSDPA network and getting good speeds? has the roll out just not happened in Denver as i was told? or do i need to do a reg edit to get it working?
thanks
Sam

Umm.. could you link to those threads? 3G works right out the box.
I live in the DFW area and 3G speeds can vary from 400kbps to 1mbps. 90% of the time it stays around 700-900kbps. Speed testing shows a wifi connection is about the same. So I almost never turn on wifi if I'm in a 3G area.

roll out must have been delayed, it is not an issue with the device (what kind of connection icon do you get when you go online?)

i get about 175-215kbs ya it sucks.

thanks for letting me know you are getting it right out of the box. are you using the stock rom?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the SIM be a 3G sim? Have you looked into that?

I am in Colorado and still no 3G but when I travelled to St. Louis this weekend I magically had 3G service with no registry hacks, etc. running the standad Tilt AT&T ROM. I'd heard the 15th for Denver as well, hopefully soon!

1. You do have to have a 3G Sim.
2. A registry hack may be needed to show HSDPA but 3G will show when you are in coverage.

No hack needed, the hack you refer too is to change the Icon to show HSDPA in use as opposed to always showing 3G in a 3G area.
No about Denver...I read there was an FCC issue and you have another year to wait now. I think it was on Yahoo business news and someone posted it on Hofo.

IN NYC i get 840 down, and 350 up..
right out of the box...

I was in the AT&T store last week here in denver, and the guy said probably closer to Nov. 1st...but I'm not holding my breath.

Kaiser keeps switching from 3G to Edge

A friend of mine just purchased the Kaiser to be used on the at&t network. He lives in a 3G area in the USA and for some reason, his phone will not hold the 3G connection. It wants to switch to Edge. Is there a manual setting to stop this from happening or a new utility to enable/disable certain connection. Is this normal for 3G to do this. Any information I can pass on would be greatful.
Thanks
I think it's an indication that 2G is stronger than 3G in your area. My Kaiser always hold 3G connection all the time where I live. You can "manually" force 3G. Here is one the many ways to do it: on Windows Start menu, go to "Setting" then "Phone" (on the "Personal" tab), click "Band" tab, then use "WCDMA" for network type selection (default is "Auto")
Thanks for the help. I'll pass it on.
While the Kaiser is my first ppc type phone and I cannot claim to be expert I do think that this is a normal reaction of the phone to what networks are available.
I live in San Jose Ca. and must, perchance, move up and down the peninsula in the normal course of work and life.
I see my Kaiser switching from Edge to 3G to unnamed all up and down the peninsula. It is best for 3G in the cities and worse up in the hills -as one might expect. I also get the best 3G connections in the evenings and night vs. the daytime when, I assume, more 3G users are taking up bandwidth.
It is unfortunate that where I live is an Edge (during the daytime) area though I am paying for the 3G data plan.
3G issues with the TyTnII
Hello all:
I post on the AT&T HTC forumn and had this thread sent to me by another poster there.
I also have a TyTnII newly aquired from MobilePlanet on Weds. I am having the same issues with 3G. It briefly flashed the G icon on boot up then switches to Edge with all 5 bars. I've tried the manual mode fix, no luck. The wcdma gets no signal and the gsm goes back up to 5 bars same as auto.
Then theres the inability to register my serial # on HTC's EU site. Says SN is invalid... MP has had several reports of EU devices doing this.
I'm in the US, NorthEast NJ area. And in the middle of a known 3G area.
Bill
Can anyone help Bill out? How many of you CAN use 3G on the USA at&t network without a problem? He's trying to see if it's a setting issue or a phone issue. I'm not in a 3G area so I can't help him here.
Thanks

I get a 3g signal when I go into Philly (I live about 45 minutes outside the city) It holds it just fine as well. Is it possible you just have weak 3g coverage where you are? I actually shut off the 3g on my phone as I have no 3g coverage at work or at home and the 3g connection discharges the battery in a hury.
I'm on AT&T as well.
Oh - BTW - I also can't register my phone with the eClub either. I sent an Email to the HTC Webmaster but have not had any reply in 3 days. I'm not too confident in HTC's support.

HSDPA on tmobile

is there anything I have to do or turn in the settings on Kaiser because I don't seem to be getting the speeds.

Which countries of TMO are you talking about?
In US, I don't think TMO has HSDPA thou. All I get is the EDGE speed in So. Cal.
T-mobile UK and I'm in the centre of Glasgow so was expecting it to work.
which web 'n' walk?
dont count your chickens feller. i had the same problem and i spent a half hour with tmobile discussing it. it boils down to which price plan you are on. yes tmobile does hsdpa, but not on their bog standard web 'n' walk price plan. to cut a long story short, you have to opt in for their web 'n' walk plus or web 'n' walk max price plans in order to get hsdpa. i wish they'd state minute details like that on the adverts.....
sorry.
I pay the £7.50 per month for unlimited web browsing on my phone with T mobile, and have noticed the connection icon changing to HSDPA when surfing the internet on my MDA vario 3. Does this actually mean I am obtaining the 1.8mbs?
Its been in other threads (sorry, cant find the links to them right now) but the story as i understand it is:
OLD price plans - you can get HSDPA but it might or might not be activated
New price plans:
W&W - no
W&W+ - yes, should be on by default
W&W pro - yes, should be on by default.
Now.... for those who should have it on, but havent:
Call T-mob, they will probably try to BS you, but just keep trying! Speak to tech dept, the customer service guys (apparently) cant turn it on, so try to get transfered to the techies.
If you have had W&W for long enough (i dont know when the change was, try googling on here) they "should" enable HSDPA for you, but you might have to tell them that as its an old contract you're entitled (dont assume they know)
Dont trust speed tests - they're generally pretty useless! or try serveral and you get a better idea
Dont trust the phone icons - stock rom is ok, if you've played with it, you might (or might not) have the wrong icons so 3g/E/H etc mean nothing!
Dont expect to always get great speeds, and dont phone T-mob every 5 mins... talk to them, try it, reboot phone, go outside, go somewhere else, etc etc etc. Still not quick? call em back!
This is for T-mob in the UK only - i have absolutly no idea about anywhere else in the world!
Just got mine today, on Flext 35 Web n Walk. I did the Kaiser Tweak to ENABLE the HSDPA support. It seems slightly faster BUT I do not know how to check the speed. I live in West London Zone 3.
Just found this, maybe you can try to test your speed
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5536.html
West London zone 3 Acton Town no HSDPA
But when I get into Central London like Euston, Covent Garden, SoHo, Oxford Street etc I can get the HSDPA
If you connected at HSDPA you should see a H icon instead the 3G icon on top.
Since the Kaiser cpu is not fast enough (slower than my old XDA IIi), I found the 3G vs HSDPA not a big difference in speed when surfing normal website.
HSDPA is available on all Tmobile tarrifs, but if you've been an old customer it sometimes needs them to activate it. Phone them and they will sort it.
You will know if you get HSDPA as the icon turns to an H rather than 3G. Note though HSDPA coverage isn't universal yet and it absolutely hammers battery life.
Neil.

Cingular/ATT Users: HSPDA vs. 3G

Ok so i was messing around with the settings in Kaiser Tweak.. and i have found this..
3G does indeed go faster than HSPDA(aka 3.5G) on my network here in south florida..
In New York City it was the opposite..
another thing that i did notice was that in NY i can have simultaneous voice and data sessions open, but here in south florida i cannot
(ie. Tethering whilst on the phone, or surfing web while on hold...)
i was wondering wether u you all can have simultaneous voice and data, and where??
Colorado Springs, CO: Simultaneous voice and data.
I can do both voice and data simultaneously in Nashville, and was able to do so successfully when I was in various parts of Florida (except when I was roaming off of the Edge network, obviously).
Jacksonville, FL. works fine... might have just been an issue in NY, or you need a new sim then sim updates.
Jacksonville Fl here as well and I have had no issues... I can do it all simultaneous.... where in S. Fl are you?
im in palm beach county...when i go up to martin county simultaneous voice and data works fine..
im gonna gonna be going up there this weekend and checking it out while im there again.
I see that the 3G towers dont have much range, im guessing now that each one works differently.. I dont know if i should get a new radio.

What would a new sim have to do with network speed?

When I worked for ATT they had a training course on the new sim cards and it has to do with the available amount of memory on the chip and the downloads of the tower databases. Older non 3g sims have half the memory of the 3g sims and cannot hold the download that comes to your phone that tells it what towers to use. That was what Tom the network engineer in CFL had advised us of.
HSDPA in Philadelphia, PA is upwards of 1.8mbps. I frequently tether to my laptop and do not get disconnected if the phone rings. I am using the SIM that shipped with my Tilt.
Hey I'm in Palm Beach County too....Nice too see you here.... a quick question for you...do you notice a problem with MMS in Palm Beach County like I do... meaning a long delay in sending to someone not in the ATT spectrum???
Minneapolis - works simultaneous. Tested and verified many times =)

Maybe you simultaneous voice and data didn't work because you had the Kaiser Tweak setting "Disconnect Data Connection after" set to something other than "never" at the time you tried it. Simultaneous doesn't work if you have a disconnect timeout set.
Maryland Baltimore Area
3G and HSDPA
approx equal speeds ( 1.7mbps verified by multiple badwidth tests)
Able to both talk and surf regardless 3G or HSDPA

I'm in delaware, and this is what happens to me. HOWEVER, it doesnt happen if i'm on the edge network, go figure.
ok heres my reviews .. ive done a bit of travelling with my wife and for my job since ive bought my Tilt so i got to see its performance in a few diffrent places.
-Where i live NJ = Fast ( switches between HSDPA and Edge all the time )
-NY = semi fast ( stayed on HSDPA )
-Chicago = slow ( Edge network Only )
London = SUPER FAST ( not only did it stay on HSDPA the entire time, i watched youtube vids and flipped thru them without and lag or choppy screens )
-Boston, around the New England Aquarium = Semi Fast, Edge and HSDPA )
so the way i feel, its alot faster than my Blackberry Curve, and blows my wifes iPhone out the water while on HSDPA. BUT while im on the EDGE network its pretty much at the same speed.

It's normal, EDGE doesn't support simultaneous call and data. 3G does.
ok im in southern california and i can do both data and voice BUT i have never maxed above 800 kbit on HSDPA..really lame but i dont know why

I will attest to Boston and it's environs. I was connected yesterday during back and forth emails, when my wife called, so the simultaneous voice and data works also.
And yes, my wife was calling from her pokey slow iPhone
3G supports simultaneous voice and data and has always worked for me this way in Harrisburg PA on my Tytn II--- until recently.
I now cannot use data while on a voice call. I've tried resetting my data connections and modifying all my tweaks, but it is stuck this way. Has anyone seen this happen?

3 UK Diamond and HSDPA

Hello guys, I have a diamond and am using my 3 UK Simcard 3G is fine (in fact its pretty darn good most of the time) but I never get HSDPA which I did occasionally get with my Orange SIM.
Does anyone use 3 UK and the Touch Diamond and what's your experience with HSDPA?
I am also using a 3 simcard and get H most of the time, the best way to see if you should be getting HSDPA is to click on the link below and enter your postcode to see what coverage is available in your area
Also .05 is a lot better than .03 of the radio as well
http://www.three.co.uk/personal/coverage_/broadbandCoverageChecker.do
I live in Greater Manchester in the UK and use the 3 UK network. Admittedly the reception isn't as good as it was with my N95. I now lose 3G reception around at my brothers which I didn't previously but when I do have 3G reception I almost always get HSDPA and browsing on Opera is ALOT faster than it was on my N95.
I have just clicked to open Opera and once the 3G internet connection was opened it instantly switched to 3 bars HSDPA.
I am using the .05 radio
I have just checked the coverage checker and I should get HSDPA at my brothers house too but I struggle with 3G so as we know the radios need some work.
hmm curious
I also use 05 radio have XSeries Gold but have not once seen a H - not with any packet connection up or down with 3 SIM - funny thing is I live in London - its really bugging me LOL.
Keep the feedback coming guys
Experiment time
I am going to use trackme to save my GPS route after a long drive round areas and upload a KML file for Googlemaps to create the route and see if should be getting HSDPA in those areas - that will prove it to me

Well, after a hard reset HSDPA surfaced and initial tests show around 1.8mbps - yey

HSUPA on Diamond

I've seen I can activate the HSUPA on my Diamond, so I did it, but how can I know if I'm connected using HSDPA or HSUPA, is there an other icon? (like an H+ icon)
You'll get an H icon instead of 3G or G.
I've already got an H with HSDPA, but is it the same with HSUPA?

Not so sure i believe that myself...U was the old 3G icon that was used in early WM5 builds, but most people call it 3G, not UMTS so they changed it.
@d3us. you do realise that HSDPA and HSUPA are the same thing in different directions right? it's not an either or thing. they work together at the same time. HSDPA is the download link and HSUPA is the upload link.
So if you have enabled it, and your network supports it, and it is enabled on your account.....you should be using both HSDPA and HSUPA when you see the H icon, but for most of the time, and unless you are sending serious amounts of data, you'd never notice it just browsing, watching youtube and using messenger.
however, sending emails with huge attachments....then you might notice it.
I don't know if it's enabled on my account, that's why I was wondering, then the only way to know is to test my upload rate.
yeah you wont see any difference on the display.
your upload will just be alot faster
what network you on?
AFAIK, in the UK, the only network that has turned HSUPA on for their whole network is t-mobile. although as they share with 3, i wouldn't be surprised if they had it as well.
if your on any of the other UK networks, or in another country, i can't tell you i'm afraid.
3 in Denmark says that they don't support HSUPA but I still get a much higher upload when I enable it
it could well be that they are working to launch it and have just not announced it yet. Vodafone in the UK had HSDPA for a couple of months before they actually announced it to the public.....
Still, if you're getting the higher speeds, that's pretty sweet!
I'm using Orange in France, they should have deployed the HSUPA in some cities since January but I can't test now since I'm still on holidays using an EDGE connection^^
Orange claims HSUPA improve the ping, I hope it's true.
