Kaiser Vs. HTC Touch/Elf - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey Guys,
Ok.. so i have been a fan of Tytn 2 for a while now. I am getting it as soon as my local store is going to get it in. However, Touch News made me reconsider it. Is touch worth it? what are the benefits? what about Touchflow? how good is it?
Any ideas? Basically should i jump the ship to Sprint?
Thanks my 1st post

Looking briefly at the Touch:
Less ROM
Less RAM
Slower processor
Lower quality camera
Smaller battery capacity (might not be an issue due to processor, but HTC lists a far shorter standby time on their web page)
No GPS
TouchFlo is installed on the TyTN II/Kaiser, btw. Just not as full featured a version.
I'd stay with the Kaiser, myself.
And you'd have to pay me to use Sprint, myself. I've never had good luck with coverage or support from them (but that is obviously a personal opinion)

lol you got me sold (or re-sold) back to Kaiser =) thanks for info

I'am due an upgrade soon whats worth waiting for?

Greetings you fine folk
Currently I have a HTC Wizard 200
I was wondering what xda devices, people are looking foward to this year, Iam due an upgrade soon, so thought i'd pose the question to give me some ideas any coments greatly appreciated cheers.
You should check out www.pdadb.net they have a very comprehensives list of upcoming devices and not just by HTC.
Me, I have my eye on the HTC Nike because it has everything + FM radio.
I am also actually long overdue for an upgrade (contract ended in January but I didn't bother to ask for a new handset as I hoped for a better device like the XDA Zinc as I'm on O2). But after much thought and delay, the Zinc got canned, the Trion is still a ghost and I scoured ebay for a replacement fascia for my Mini S (paid the seller but am not sure if it's on the way yet).
Now though, after a little more searching and the fact that I might go abroad for a while (don't really fancy paying for the contract unless the phone is well worth it), I am getting pretty damn tempted to get an Orange M3100 off eBay - one for the better camera (apparently with auto focus) and for a grand total of around 100 pounds and not to mention 3G and a supposedly more responsive unit.
However, I would love a few things like GPS (present in the Kaiser but this is not a deal breaker for me) and an FM Radio(pretty handy for me) and more importantly an SDHC (Mini/micro/etc) which I am unsure any up and coming devices will have. Also with the Marvel XScale (Intel sold it to them) chips hitting scary speeds of 600MHz (there is an 800MHz version and also supposedly a 1GHz version), I'm just not sure if I should put the money towards a better phone or something else. Also from what I can see, the only PDA/Phone devices catching my eyes right now are the following:
HTC S730 but I do use the touch screen a fair bit so I'll have to test it first
HTC P4550 but I don't really see the difference between this an the Hermes as the increased ROM capacity, the keyboard mech, the additional GPS and the slightly improved camera and not to mention official WM6 doesn't truly warrant the high markup this thing will get.
Truthfully I am not too keen on just upgrading blindly but the improved camera and 3G and not to mention the number of times I almost hit the bid button eBay today is driving me nuts.

What's the Verdict?

Is the Diamond a good device? Should I upgrade from my Kaiser?
Saw a review today that said it had memory leaks and frequent crashes....
upgrade upgrade upgrade...
The Diamond just keeps getting better...
upgrade and ......search/check the other 5-6 threads with the same subject or complete reviews on the subject.
sorry, but you are a senior with hundreds of posts, you are not a noobie so i do expect more.
thank you.
True - it was a quick spur of the moment post after I read the newspaper review today. I search the other threads and find some more reviews
you are so naughty
he told you off

U should update ASAP, the gsensor apps are gonna start rolling out (among many other cool apps and hot cooked roms)
Besides its a COOL Phone, sexyest around.
Yes mine still has a memory leak (depsite latest stock ROM) but it has never crashed or frozen on me it is so sexy makes my Kaiser look like a brick - get one!

sexy seems to be the key word....how about a sexy dumb blond?!
we try hard to educate her and hope for the best. i have to say that mine is doing great progress
If you are not in the rush, just wait for some time. Some device appear to have hardware faults, and some faults may be caused by software/or hardware (ie accelerometer one). These can be fixed in later batches. Let others be the manufacturer guinea pigs
Diamond is fantastic device, but you cant help get the feeling it was somewhat rushed to release (to be released before iPhone maybe?). Thats why I advise to wait, especially considering you have Kaiser already. Also price will drop somewhat (I doubt much hovewer, but, still).
Dont upgrade! Dont upgrade! At least not yet.
Had a Kaiser this morning; NOW I have a Diamond.
Best phone I've ever had: I even think the camera is better than the Kaiser's and the device is dinky, sexy, crisp and JUST A JOY TO USE. Coreplayer H.264 works; there's REAL video acceleration, power and slickness.
I really couldn't care less about the Touch Pro: it's TOO THICK. In this instance I take sexy over hardware Keyboard, and I don't need more than 4gb. Shame I've got an 8gb card going to waste though.
I've not missed that dreadful Kaiser hardware Keyboard one bit either.
UPGRADE YE.....if you can afford to.
Did I say I quite like this phone?!?!?
Did I say you might run into some disturbances soon Not to mention how hot the device gets. I'll take that sd card off your hands if you don't want it ^_^ I actually can't live with 4gb. I have 2 8gb cards full of music, vids, pics, apps, and assignments. I couldn't live without at least 8gb. It would bother me way too much. But that's just me.
Kraize
Ive been waiting for both devices to come to Sprint. At first I was certain I wanted the Touch Pro, but after seeing the sleek sexy appearance of the Diamond, the thicker, yet more able Touch Pro is starting to look less and less likely as the one I will get. Not sure if im willing to give up the qwerty just yet.
For much ticking I take my laptop.
Modemconnection via bluetooth PAN and HSDPA is really luxurious when traveling At speeds of 150kb/s I can work as if I were at home.
I don't need to type a lot, and SMS is perfect on screen.
I agree, once you start using GPS and Wi-Fi at the same time the Diamond could boil an an egg
After coming from a Tytn 2 which I have owned since Nov 07 I really love the Diamond, plenty of features, and in such a tiny package, amazing how much they packed into it
GPS seem a lot more sensitive compared to my Tytn 2 which averaged 6-7 sats outdoors in with clear skies, the Diamond averages 8-10.
Wi-Fi also seems to have a little better signal range and connects to my router a little faster than my Tytn 2 did.
The screen is stunning so clear and extremely bight, brilliant for web surfing and the included youtube app is really cool to.
The only disappointing thing is the 4gb of storage, I had 6gb on my Tytn 2, used to use it for the TomTom Western and central Europe map and the North America map, which totalled 4gb plus my other apps on top so have had to just stick one map on instead. HTC really should have put 8gb minimum on his phone, 8gb chips these days really are cheap as chips so there was no excuse there
If you loved the Tytn 2/Kaiser and don't mind loosing the keyboard then this is an awesome phone to go for.
I totally mind losing the keyboard. Unless! Unless someone ported WinMo to the iPhone. That would be a winner in my eyes
I haven't run into any heating problems when using GPS or WiFi :S
not noticed an overheating problems here either, and I'm finding texting and composing long passages much easier than on the kaiser despite the lack of hardware keyboard. I really don't imagine I'll miss the kaiser one bit.
mine don't get hot - slightly warm and fuzzy but not hot

Is Diamond a good upgrade

Hi Guys
I'm thinking of upgrading my Polaris to a Diamond and just wondering if you guys are still happy with the Diamond and do ya think an upgrade from my Polaris is worth while.
The Diamond spec and looks seem brilliant but the only thing am a bit concerned about is the small 4gb memory it has, is this a problem or do you just learn to live with it.
Thanks
Tim
I never had a polaris, but this phone is brilliant, best phone available. IMO obviously. 4gb is LOTS of space. i have an ipod touch for all my music and video needs.
I am qualified to answer this one.... (hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while)
I've upgraded from an HTC P3600-> P3650->P3700. Each time the upgrade was better but I have to say when I upgraded to the Diamond, I love the phone but was sadly disappointed with it's speed.
Because of the processor, I thought I would get a faster phone.... it's terribly slow compared to the P3650.
In fact, I actually made a post this last Friday asking if there was any tweaking I could do to make it faster.
I ended up installing Duttythroy's new ROM and IT FLIES. All I can say is this phone now performs the way it should have from the factory.
I even did the #1 tweak on the top tweak list for the Diamond (a sticky) on top of his ROM and it seems even faster.
I hated clicking on the "people" tab and having to wait until my contact list would appear. I made that post Friday and if by tonight I hadn't been able to do something about it, I was going to put it on ebay and buy an iphone.
All I can say is I'm glad I installed the ROM. The memory usage is great, the 4g internal memory is plenty, the phone is slick and I really like it now.... by far the best phone I've owned.
You won't regret getting it.
Mark
PS. I sold my P3650 on ebay and got just shy of 500 bucks out of it.
I used the polaris for a short period and own quite a few WM smartphones over the last few years and I would definitely recommend the upgrade. Yes the tflo3d was somewhat sluggish before but now it's all changed. I am using bepes rom and it's as smooth as butter. The thing with diamond is, it keeps on getting better each day, thanks to xda dev and it's valuable contributers. As for the 4gb storage, I keep a lot of stuff in there (lots of apps, 100's of pics and mp3's and a few movies :s) and its only over half full.
Anyway find out all about the phone and decide if you want it or not. If possible try going to a store to test one out before you make up your mind. And oh yh, You will love the display, it's just too good.
Regards,
AF241
I don't even know what the Polaris is so can't say whether or not an upgrade is recommended but I came from the N95 and don't regret it a bit.
Some reasons to get a Diamond - High res screen perfect for browsing and films, a back button - very useful to backstep in any application, a Home button - Returns you to your Today screen instantly, a SCROLL WHEEL!!!! wow!!! zoom in and out of photos and web pages with ease and with reg files from here you can use it for your contacts and various other apps and the best thing about the Diamond... a great community here to help you with any issues and provide you with new apps/ROMS to try in the quest to find the best.
Yes... I've had my Diamond for 6 days now and it's the best Windows mobile phone I've had. Only downsides the good-looking but not customisable TF3D and the battery. However, with the extended one coming out (or out already?) it should be fine.
Go for it...
Thanks for the help guys I think am hooked now I just have to decide where to get one from.
T-Mobiles MDA Compact IV
O2 XDA Ignito (Out Soon)
Expansys HTC Diamond
Never bought a rebranded (MDA,XDA) PDA before so do you lose or gain anything with regards to hardware or software.
Software I’m not too bothered about as I’ll probably just upgrade my ROM from this forum anyway.
Thanks
Tim
Yes........
yes
you know it makes sence
Curious
I know that it's a bit off topic, but like the poster, I'm about to upgrade my phone.
And I've been using WM based devices for a looooong while, so I would like to keep using WM based phones.
Now apart from Diamond there are other phones out there with WM that came out recently.
Samsung Omnia i900
Toshiba Portege G810
Both use WM6.1 just like Diamond.
Now I don't know if there are any users here of the Samsung and Toshiba phones, but if there are...how would you compare Diamond with them?
Around threee months after the launch it still has many problems:
The interface is still slow.
The battery life is still poor.
The cover still collects fingerprints like a magnet.
The storage is still not upgradable.
... and it's still the BEST frikking phone on the market. If you're gonna upgrade, you really have no better choice.
Just a simple answer
Its the best upgrade

Low resell value (2nd hand prices) of Diamond?

Hi all,
Just picked up an as-new Diamond for only £180, and I am pretty chuffed. But this makes me wonder, why is the second hand price of the Diamond so low? This phone hasn't even been available en mass for 6 months, and is still the latest model. I would have thought it would be more like £250 second hand rather than £180?
Thoughts?
Oh it is a very nice upgrade from the Polaris by the way Slimmer and loving the VGA screen. Just that the battery isn't really up to it.
Thanks.
At a guess probably because the Touch HD and X1 are around the corner.....
X1 I can understand.
But HD is targetted at different customers surely?
Slim/style = Diamond (used to be Polaris)
Keyboard = Pro (used to be Kaiser)
Fully featured = HD (used to be Athena???)
suggest you have a close look at the Touch HD...I think you might find that its way superior specs (including screen acerage, SD card, battery!) outway the downside of a slightly bigger device
....my humble opinion of course
er, btw, never seen a modile phone/PDA hold its price for more than 3mnths...only as good as the next released model
I think the resale price is determined by one key factor ... the Diamond is a bit crap
All it takes for the price of the Diamond to drop is for people to visit these forums. I mean come on, why wouldn't the price drop when they all overheat and most of them have screen/display issues?
As already mentioned, the fact that the HD is in the pipeline will be having an impact, plus many people are selling because the Diamond wasn't what they had wanted or hoped for. I've heard more than one story outside of this forum.
WM is a bit of a shock to be honest compared to the reliability and functionality of a Nokia - or even the iphone. IMO, HTC haven't helped things by rolling out a set of half-finished software which manages to suck while pushing the hardware a little too hard.
I'm talking about TF3D here, with its poor, inflexible homescreen and badly limited program launcher. It's unable to display landscape so they decided to disable landscape mode entirely and I just don't believe that the photo contacts tab was originally intended to display just 15 people. Then there's the dialer bloatware (with its handy pocket-unlocking feature) and the bugs in the implementation of Opera!
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with my Diamond now that I've flashed, re-flashed and gone with 3rd-party today plugins. I love what it can do given its compact size but I know many people will have been disappointed and that will inevitably knock down the resale price.

Kaiser/Tilt worthy upgrade?

Any Tilt or Kaiser owners plan to upgrade to the Touch Pro 2? Does it seem like it would be a significant upgrade? I'm curious to what you fellow Tilt/Kaiser owners think...
I have the Tilt and have not upgraded to the Fuze. I was waiting for the next big thing that ATT was potentially was going to bring over and it seem like this is it. I love the device's design in every aspect; looks amazing physicaly. What i don't like is that they stuck it with a 3mp camera (and removed flash!). I absolutely love the 3.6" screen. Basically, i'm pretty sure i'll be upgrading (i saved my contract upgrade and rejected the Fuze for this reason).
Yeah, I'm going to buy Touch Pro2, the reasons why, larger screen, better hardware, 5-row keyboard, looks very very cool, more finger-friendly.
iphone. if lack of a hw keyboard is not a deal breaker. After owning 2 winmo phones (currently using a tilt) and modding many other peoples iphones, i can honestly say that the iphone is superior in usability/apps/stability. after drooling for a touch diamond and then hearing my friend say its laggy after he bought it, was a real disappointment. Microsoft is really behind the curve in the mobile sector. Thinking about selling my tilt for iphone now. Might wait till winmo 7 to come out before purchasing another winmo phone. For the record i'm a pc guy and i think apple products/fans our generally pretentious and kinda douche-ie (not all though).
Not sure about the Touch Pro2. I rarely .. if ever use my keyboard. I am waiting on the HTC Topaz for ATT..... drool.
I'm probably gonna go for the TP2. 800x480 screen!
They only issue i see with the device is that they've removed the d-pad.
HTC looks like they've put every good feature into this device, from FM Radio to TV Out. It looks perfect, and although a faster processor or a DPAD wouldn't hurt. And a 6.5 upgrade sounds good as well. I am certainly getting this phone.
Dave
good thing i passed on the fuze too...The Touch pro 2 will definitely be up there on my next phone list...And this will probably be the real successor to the tytn ii...I think it also matches the specs we had a few months back on the then phantom "TILT 2" that never showed up...until now...
TP 2.... is it worth sniffing at?
Does anyone know if it'll have proper 3D and 2 D DirectX and Direct Draw drivers included? I'm not wanting a HTC customised menu so much as full native support of the built in hardware within the operating system and parts thereof such as Pocket Mediaplayer itself. I'd like to use video playback without having to slash the frame rates and/or resolution as I have to with my Kaiser (even under TCPMP).
I'm concerned to read that although it has GPS support, it doesn't appear to list what software is provided to use this in the UK/Europe. Does this mean that it could be the TP all over again with HTC refusing to acknowledge any GPS problems that may crop up? Without a tried and tested native GPS app bundled with the device, it won't be one for me.
I'm very tempted - but I think I'll have to wait until I actually can put my hands on one in a shop to decide. I fear I will find it too large and/or thick for my liking. The Tilt is thick, but small. The iphone is large to the point I feel mixed with regard to the size in the pocket/screen comfort balance, but at least is thin. The TP2 will be large AND thick. And it loses the DPAD indeed, and I use that a lot
only a few people think it would be a worthy upgrade?
What's that saying, once bitten....

If those who currently have Kaisers (or TPs for that matter) get a feeling of déjà vu with the 'finished' product and its shortcomings (video drivers, keyboard performance, GPS time to lock and any lag, important bits/features missed out etc) then yes, you are correct. HTC need to learn from its mistakes and provide a product that actually meets peoples needs fully and reliably if they want those who've already been stung by them to part with cash on a new HTC product. Many people here have already said they'll never buy another HTC product due to all the problems they've had so you get an idea of the extent of feeling about such things!
I'm planning to get the TP2
- Higher resolution big and wide screen
- Larger battery
- Faster processor
- More internal memory
- 5 row keyboard
- TV out
- USB OTG
- New TOUCH FLO 3D with larger soft menu screens
- WM 6.5 (when HTC will make it available)
I'll miss:
- D-pad
- Jog wheel
- Buttons!

Or, there are people like me who are really happy with the Kaiser, and for whom it would take something really good to warrant a change. As said, I'll see the TP2 when it's there, but until then I don't plan to change at all.
If the cookers start cooking good roms and it can be unlocked ok then yes it looks lovely
