noob question... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have an AT&T Tilt. I am a long time BBerry user who never once tweaked a device.
I would like to install several things including the HTC home and at some point TouchFlo.
Let's use my challenge with the HTC home files. Regardless of whether I use the 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 files I get the same result.
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and.....
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing.
Am I literally this stupid?

Hi,
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and..... I assume you copied the cab files to your device?
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing. I dont quite get what you mean by it opens up in Internet Explorer? Did you click on the cab file? It is not suppose to open up in IE. Please be more specific..
Cheers

Here's what I have
The folder for the HTC Home Screen has a file called _setup.xml and around 100 files.
I click on the _setup.xml file and it opens in IE. Nothing happens. There is no .cab file in the folder.

You unpacked the CAB file somehow (likely on your PC before transfering). Don't do that. Move the CAB file to your phone, not its contents. When you open a CAB file, it looks to the XML file for installation instructions. If you open the XML file, it thinks you want to read it, so it opens PIE.
So don't unpack CABs.

Having trouble with zip and xml files

when i install a cab and exe files, i use active sync, extract the file to a folder on my tilt, open it up with my tilt, and boo yah, its installed. not so with zip and xml files. when its either one of these, however i do the same steps as above except when i open it up on my tilt it connects to internet explorer, looks like it "installs", then i get a whole bunch of wording like this:
-<wap.provisioningdoc>
-<charaxteristic
type="install">
etc., etc., etc.
but i NEVER get the program. i see ppl posting opens and loads of various other things in zip and xml format, but i can not obtain these files. What am i doing wrong??
With zip files extract one level only. Normally the zip will extract to either a CAB or an EXE.
Most EXE's you run on the PC with the device AS connected.
CAB files move (unextracted) to the PPC either main or storage card and tap to run on the device.
Sometimes you get a combination of an XML and an EXE (eg Kaiser Tweak) where you move both files to the PPC into a folder and then run the EXE on the device. These are relatively rare - most exe's run on the PC.
If you continue to have problems it is best to give a specific example of the file type and software in question.

CAB files opening with Opera

Hello,
I just bought the new HTC Touch Diamond today from Telus Mobility (My Provider) and when I put on a program to install and try to open the .cab file in the File Explorer, it tries to open it in Opera Mobile and I cannot install the program.
I am using ActiveSync to transfer the files from my computer to the Internal Storage area of my phone, then I find the files using the File Explorer on the phone, click the .cab file and it tries to open it in Opera Mobile.
Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. I just tried a Soft Reset, and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance!!
Try to manually rename the files to "whatever.CAB." Add .cab to it and see if that'll get it working.
Hmm..
Okay, I tried that and it didn't work.
I am trying to install a program and the files it has is:
_setup - XML Document (I click on that to activate install?)
ADVANC~1.000
ADVANC~1
ADVANC~1.003
ADVANC~1.004
ADVANC~2.002
Hope this helps..
(Yes, I realize it's not a cab file >.< )
After reviewing the situation over. You are NOT supposed to extract the files, then put them on your phone. Leave them in the archive (.cab file), upload to your phone and then execute it.
It should start installing right away.
Hope this helps for anyone else!!

Installing software...

I have d/l coreplayer, but it's all just a bunch of files. Is it a case of simply transferring them to the diamond whereupon I initiate the installation on the phone itself? If so where do I install to and which files do I need?
Thanks,
S.
you need to transfer the .cab file to the diamond and run it from the file explorer in the phone. If you have ie. WinRAR installed and just went with default settings, the cab. look like an archive like .zip and .rar files and therefore many people think they have to unpack it...
Two ways apps are installed on a PPC.
1. Via a CAB file (filename ends in .cab) by transferring the CAB file to the PPC and "clicking" it within file explorer.
2. Via ActiveSync app installer by running the EXE on your PC. (ActiveSync then transfers the CAB file without you having to do it.)
If you downloaded coreplayer, it should have been only one file (either a CAB file that you run on the PPC or an EXE that you run on the PC).

most installations create cabs

Whenever I install a program it appears to open a cab on my kaiser.
Rather than running the installers all the time on my laptop, is there a way to find those cabs and just move them to my storage card so I can install them if I am away from my laptop?
go to the installation folder on ur desktop and the cab would be in a folder in there. usually the folder marked 'installation files' or 'resources'..
just look for the cab file.
found some..
but not most ...
Very odd..
If you mean that when you run a .exe on your laptop to install a program on your kaiser, then it is possible to sometimes extract the cabs from the .exe or installer. A program called Universal Extractor can extract over 50 types of files including most installers. It is free, and supports many languages. It even adds an entry to the context menu, so you can right click nearly any file. It will then try to find the appropriate extracting tool, and then if it succeeds, it will place the files in a folder in the same directory as the original file. Try this, it has worked very well for me.

Click to collapse
If it helps, I tend to find most of them are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync

How can i do this? thanks for the help!!!!

.cab installation...
If the cab is zipped (ie. it has .zip / .rar extension), unzip it on your desktop. If you're not sure if the file is actually a .cab file, right click and select 'Properties' - you can then see the actual extension and file type.
Copy the .cab to your device. Place it somewhere obvious, so you can find it easily (ie. the root of Internal Storage). Then on your device, locate the file and tap on it to install it. If it doesn't install this way, it's either not a .cab, or it's not designed for your device
