I find the windows mobile connection manager to be really horrible. Is there a more intuitive replacement available ? I'm not talking about the one with the HTC rom that just turns the various radios on/off.
It sure seems like there should be something with a scrollable list of connections (wifi / cellular / vpn) with a simple "connect" and "disconnect" button handy.
The way windows mobile does it just isn't intuitive at ALL.
Any thoughts on this ?
Thanks !
Couldn't agree more, speaking as someone who has just spent an entire weekend trying to get applications to work with my wifi and most of this morning trying to get my email working again (silly me, I should have "My ISP" selected).
And I never even touched the settings and Vodafone put the settings on there themselves!
There must be a better way?
I am using PhoneAlarm and the skin provides direct icons to switch On / Off the GPRS Radio the WiFi Radio and the BlueTooth. The icons also have indicator lights so that you know the status of a particular Radio
Hope this helps
couldn't agree more, is there anyway we can map one of the buttons to Comm manager? Any registry hack for that? I recently did the PTT button hack and looking to link it to Comm manager...
by default there's a button on the today screen on the kaiser right out of the box. There's a ton of hacks and ways to change it if you arent happy. It amazes me that people buy this phone and dont know how to upgrade/change things. MyFirstPhone sounds like a much better phone for some.

Either the 6 or 10 button comm manager does exactly what you describe, but don't want. If you don't like it, create your own app to do it.
Personally, I am very, very grateful for the apps and utilities that people have created on this site. My life is so much easier.
I mapped the 10 button comm manager to my PTT button, so it's one button and one click to turn on/off any radio. It is NOT going to get any easier than that.

No, it doesn't.
Show me where you can disconnect and/or connect a VPN connection in the 6 or 10 button comm manager.
Screen shots happily accepted.

Some people you can never please....
It can control all RADIOS, which is what I stated. Some people complain about having to make a couple of extra clicks. The 10 button comm manager makes my life quite a bit easier, that's why I suggested it.

heh that makes me wonder also. its not the end of the world if you have to use an extra button press but some people will do anything to save one button press or complain their phone wont do what they want

Hi
You can use mortscript “connect” function to start RAS connections of your choice, not only the "default connection" selected in "Start > Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks".
Leave in selected connections a dummy connection without any modem or vpn definition (like My Work Network) in both Internet profile and Private profile. In This configuration WM can’t make a connection himself (no un-wanted connection).
For disconnection I use the disconnect button in top bar connection status provide by Schap’s Advanced configuration : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070
I write a little mortscript exemple to start RAS connections and exclude in choice list default system connection (Work, The Internet, WAP Network, etc…) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1794522&postcount=181
You can also use BaterryStatus Advanced Edition with his Phone-TrayIcon : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270751
Sorry for my poor English.

Just tested my friends Kaiser and I was hoping that one of you could help me incorporate one of the features to my phone. I've got a Herald and one thing I've noticed with the TytnII is that when you press FN+Wi-Fi on the keyboard it turns on wifi instead of opening comm manager like the phones have always done. Anyone with some spare time or knowledge care to find out where this registry setting is, or how to enable this for other pda's. It's the little convieniences such as these that make the experience of using pocketpc that much better.
cheers
Don't know, I use AE Button to map the center nav button to Press-and-hold to bring up com manager.
about 100 views I guess no one's got anything on this one. I guess I will have to get my hands on the kaiser again to figure this one out.
Thanks anyway guys...
I might add that AE Button also allows you to map any key to direct radio controls. I have a button mapped to toggle Bluetooth and WiFi radios on and off individually, without having to open comm manager. It's a very valuable PDA app.
cool, I wasn't aware of that. I guess I'll try it out.
Thanks alot
It's even cooler, I just installed the com manager from another thread here that has a 3G disable button so that you can save battery when not in need of high speed. This new com manager doesn't have the "Data" button to break the connection. AE Button allows you to map a button to "end dialup connection" which replaces that missing function.
Ongoing issues that need to be resolved - If you respond to any of these before you write any response PLEASE put the issue number at the top of your post, because this thread is going to get very large fast and this will help keep it somewhat organized, thanks.
#1: I have tried everything but can dump the time & battery icon off the title bar without alignment problems. Anybody find a key yet? Are we stuck creating new icon templates in black to save us from the alignment issue? Or has someone found a key to compensate the alingment loss from removing both time & battery status icons?
#2:Does Video Share work on the Tilt if you have an HTC ROM on it and are connecting with a Video Share enabled phone? (obviously this will only be applicable for people who live in the selected 3G networks for which Video Share is supported)
#3:When I make/recieve a call, and I try to access the top bar (start button) the top bar locks up. if I try a shortcut button to IE for example, IE loads but just says connecting... if I hangup the call, it redoes the 3G connection (it was 3G before I was on the call) and the IE works.
BUT the top bar is locked up. Start/3G icon, etc doesn't click. Only the "X" will work until I do a reboot.

The "Buttons" setting only allows me to change the short press settings for 5 buttons. Elsewhere on this forum, there are instructions for adding the PTT button for both short press and long press, by adding registry keys 40C6 and 40C7. Can I add long press entries for other buttons?
Update!: According to HTC support, this is currently impossible. Sorry. (thanks deathace)
Update #2: Vito Button Mapper also enables push and hold functionality for the standard buttons (not PTT button) using the Start, Settings, Button Mapper. Also allows for customization of the soft buttons based on running application. Got to say that while Vito Button Mapper works, it's not that WM6 Pro friendly. In other words it works, but has some issues with icon display and uninstall. Hopefully HTC support will get their act together. (thanks Jim_R)
Update #3: Spb Pocket Plus 4.0.1 also allows for remapping of keys w/hold functionality, including PTT and works with WM6 (thanks _Alex_)

Is there a way to choose radio frequency besides using Bandswitch? Meaning the setting would show up in the Phone Settings menu that allows Band Selection. Perhaps there are some registry edits out there?
Here is a cab file that replaces "PhoneSettings.Dll" with the one from the Rogers Canada Tilt Rom. and enables the Band Tab. You will be required to reset your phone after installation.

HTC steaming media seems to work on the TyTN II but not the tilt. of all the posts that I've read, and googled, only 1 person has said that their tilt works with streaming media is working, but not fully with every site, just a few. TCPMP with ytpocket seems to be the closest thing to a band aid. but this ony gets you youtube, not the other sites that work on a TyTN II with HTC SM.

Okay, Here's the deal. HTC streaming media is for RTSP files only. That means Pocket YouTube. Yes it works in the US, but you have to have the correct ID/User Agent for it to work correctly. Basically the Streaming Media Player is a license of Real Player. All stock Tilt have an EXE called Real.exe in windows directory. If you open it, it's the same as Streaming Media Player, Has the same Icon as Real Player, & the about screen calls it HTC Real Player.

errrrrr. If you flash the identical ROM on a TyTN II and a Tilt, how are the files in the windows directory any different?
I think you misread what I typed.
OK, after serching in many forums, i found that the problem is:
"When the device is protected by a password (Start/Settings/Lock), the start menu freezes after ending phone calls. In addition, the backlight turns off.
This only happens if the phone call is long enough (more than a few secs) for the display to turn off during the call. This is to prevent accidental button presses. When the phone call is ended the display should come back up, however, this is where bug seems to manifest itself. Somehow the password protection gets in the way and turns the display off and freezes the start menu.
The reason why this is serious (especially for business users) is that when you use MS exchange sync, many businesses enforce policies requiring a device password (common & recommended practice). This means that the option of turning the device password off does not exist. Therefore, using exchange sync (with security policies enforced) and making phone calls does not work."
So, acording to this, there are two solutions:
1º Sinple turn of pasword protection if you don't need it;
2º (found in modaco) Change a registry entry:
\HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableFastDormantDisplay DuringCall
From "1" to "0" will stop it but be warned if you arent using a headset then the touch sensitive screen will be in operation throughout the call so you may end up with your ear triggering applications etc...
cheers

Nasty Camera
My phone works ok I guess and I am pleased with it. But I miss not being able to take photos with it. I used my TYTN all the time primarily as a mobile video station and a camera. But this KAISER is a complete mess when it comes to taking photos.
My point is, can someone tell me how to turn off the auto focus is thats the problem or does anyone have any idea how to speed up the lens to capture time. It takes forever to set its focus. Oh, and don't start me on video capture as that IS the joke of the century.
I can't believe what a step back this KAISER is in comparison to its older brother the TYTN. I expected this phone to at least take a moderate picture. Why on earth is the 2nd camera better (VGA) than the 3MP main camera. It is completely crazy.
I digress and am off to cry now.
Hi all,
may I know if anyone had face this problem. Whenever we receive an SMS, it pops up as a notification at the bottom of the screen. But the notification normally have 2 options: Normally, reply/view on the left and menu on the right. For the left option, sometimes it is "reply" and sometimes it is "view". Is this normal? How can I change it to permanently as "view" only?
Thanks all in advance.

Hey, actually I have a problem synchronizing. I have been told that if a Kaiser is connected to a PC through Activesync, then the Kaiser could use the PC's Internet connection. And I think that is great, except mine won't. Instead my PC will try to use my Kaiser as a modem, even though it is already connected.... What can I do?

DoubleLauncher also includes similar functionality, but with even more options:
single tap, double tap, single hold, double hold, triple tap - 5 combinations per button - HTC may be right that it isn't possible with vanilla windows, but it is obviously possible to code something.
wifi vs AT&T
Sorry for asking a question that I am sure was already addressed (unfortunately I cannot find it).
How do I instruct my AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) to try to connect using WiFi when it is present rather then connect using AT&T GPRS, 3G whatever?
When I bought my phone in October, I got advice from Howard Forum to go to your site (http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...22&d=1191864241) to get a cab file. I did that, and it worked.
I had to replace my phone which was defective, and now I wanted to get the same cab file for the new phone but the link no longer works.
Your advice and help will be very much appreciated. If you prefer you can send me a private message to [email protected].
upgrade??
I was this close to jumping from the 8525 to the 8925 but advised not too: ATT rep says there are software and hardware issues that they are working on with HTC and IT guys say they've had issues as well.
What's the consensus here? is it worth the risk or should I wait a while longer for things to iron out?

Well, the Video Rendering sucks. All in all though, I have to say I really like the device. It's okay out of the box, but after tinkering & tweaking I have to say that I'm glad I moved to the Kaiser. The GPS is solid for me & after changing my DNS settings to OpenDNS the internet is fast. I tether a lot & get great speed on my laptop (when in HSPDA or 3G). Yess, there are some issues, but I think it's the best device around. I've had no problems with my Tilt or my TYTN II. It works really well with our Blackberry server & I get my emails fater on my device than on my pc.
The only issue for me again is the video. But it's mostly a work device for me, so vide isn't a big deal. Besides TCPMP playback is good enough for catching up on my missed episodes of House MD.
I'd say go for it.
Hi all,
I wonder if this is even consider a problem or bug. At the Today screen, there will be times when you are overflow with schedules. Then a scroll bar will appear at the right most of the screen(as shown below left). The scroll bar stretch all the way from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Is it possible to change it to such a way that the scroll bar starts from the bottom of the Today plug-in to the bottom of the screen(as shown bottom right). Please kindly advice if this can be done.
Thanx
Cheers
eRic
You can use HHC (home plug-in config) to lock the home plug in. Then the scroll is just at the bottom. There is a registry setting to do the same thing, but I don't know what it is. The HHC is a great utility as you can back up the plug in and change the fonts and icons too.
OpenDNS
GSLEON, where does one change DNS settings to the OpenDNS settings? Thanks.
What can I do???
Hello all,
I am on my second Tilt now (on AT&T network) but I am still having voice clarity issues. Very choppy conversations at times, even when connected to a landline, but there are always at least 2 signal bars & 3G displayed. I have tried to disable the data before making calls, but so far I have seen no improvement. Could Active sync have something to do W/ my problem? It always seems to be running. Also, I am using the stock AT&T rom.
Any input provided pertaining to my issue is greatly appreciated.

Guys....
I am not aware there is infra-red hardware on the Kaiser/HTC8925! I do not see there is a need to have "Beam" in the Comm Manager window. If I am missing something please let me know, or better yet substitute it with EdgeData on/off.

NO.. Beam is a feature of Infra-Red hardware as in the HTC8525 / TyTn. It is used to transport files between two devices that have such hardware when placed close together. I can not say it is a faster method than BlueTooth, but it is more secure, as blue tooth integrity can be compromised. The Kaiser/HTC8925 does NOT have it.
Yep agree with above post, However, oddly in the case of the Kaiser the Beam icon will actualy start a send file or recieve file by means of BlueTooth.
To copy files (ringtones) to cell phone (Nokia 6280) I connected via Bluetooth and used the "Beam" to transfer it...
There's no IR, like others mentioned, it's related to BT in this case although it's a a bad choice of words.
Am I talking Urdu.... ?? or Swaheely..??
Are you all guys missing the point or it is just me????
I am not talking about the function of the "Beam". I am talking about the existence of the button "Beam" in Comm Manager, next to BlueTooth. So quit telling me your use of the "beam" while we all know clicking it on or off has no function, since transferring files via BlueTooth can be done with BlueTooth on alone.

You CANNOT recieve bluetooth "beamed" contacts from standard (i.e. non-smart) mobiles while BEAM is off in the Comm Manager, it basically enables the bluetooth spec that allows it, sort of like a security option. This lets you have BT on for your headset ect. but "protects" you from recieving items like contacts sent from nearby bt devices.
Also no need to get angry at people replying, you asked for info and people were just letting you know what it sounded like you were asking originally.

It really depends on the ROM you are using or CAB file since they put it in. The stock HTC ROM didn't have that as an option. You can change it if you like via registry to another function.
Actually, here's the low-down. From WM5 onwards, even in the old TyTN, bluetooth couldn't receive files(not sure of sending) without the beam option on. Try turning BT on, Beam off, and receiving a file. Personally, I just keep it at on, and then I changed the option.

Hi dude
It's right, there isn't IR (and "Beam" refer to it) on the Kaiser, but as some other one already said, there isn't the Beam button in the original HTC Comm Manager, so, maybe you are using an other Comm Manager with this option enabled (useful for other devices)!
Personally, i also got the Beam Button when install the Schap's CommManager and i removed it using Advanced configuration tools app (remove/customise all the buttons in th "Comm Manager" tab) and with this one you can add the 3G/GPRS button (turn it on/off), but no others like EDGE or HSDPA untill now (if you check any Comm Manager with these new one let me know too, )!
Hope to help you!

Dutty has it removed in his V4 DTouch ROM. He substituted it with Data on/off.
To add or remove the beam in Comm Manager, you could access the registry or install Schaps Advanced Config. tool. After installation, click Menu, Comm Manager Settings, Check or un-check the icons of your choice.
Thanks to @[email protected] for pointing that out. I just loaded Schaps Adv. Configurator and got it handled.

I want to take a shot at answering your question, although I do not fully understand the question. When you shut down Data Exchange through Edge, that's all you shut down. 3G and HSDPA through GPRS still function. Edge is a stand alone secure data transfer protocol. If you shut down 3G, then only Edge is up. If your service provider offers full edge service, you can surf the internet with Edge alone as in the case of AT&T MediaNet package.
I hope I answered your question correctly.
"Beam" is a must for accepting files via Bluetooth!!!
As to the original question, of wheteher or not "beam" is needed in the kaiser com manager, I personally like the the idea. Reason is (as stated previously in this post), if the "recieve all incoming beams" box is unticked in start-settings-connections-beam , then you CAN NOT accept any incoming data (ie- vcard/contact/ringtone/files/etc...) via bluetooth. As also stated before, you can have your bluetooth on and operational with a headset or what have you, but then any time you need to accept a file/etc from your pc or a friend's phone, you MUST turn on "beam": and that covers bluetooth "beams" or ir "beams" alike. It is a bit mis-leading in a way I guess to some, but it is nice to be able to just press your comm mgr button and click beam/bluetooth to accept a file on the go, as opposed to going into connections and enabling it all. Well, I hope this was useful info to the original question.
In addition, all previous devices with beam AND bluetooth also worked this way. The tytn, apache, and all the other variants running wm5/wm6 have all needed the "receive all incoming beams" checked when receiving data over bt or ir. As I said before, it only seems misleading to folks who are used to having a beam option with an ir equipped device, but the kaiser/tilt still needs the beam option for bluetooth beams.
Hi everybody, right now I try to set up the HTC Diamond for my father, so far so easy .
I just have one major (and one minor) problem:
Is there a way to forbit the Diamond to go online at all? Right now, when you by chance hit the weather button, he just starts to establish a data connection. The Diamond is not supposed to go online at all over the normal cell phone network (probably over WLAN, but that is not important). Is there a way to disable that, or at least ask if you want to go online?
And the minor problem/question, is there a way to configure which buttons are on the bottom? E.g. he doesn't need to have E-Mail there.
Thanx a lot for your help , and I hope, I haven't overlooked a thread with the awsers .
Try remove the grps settings in settings \ connections \ connections \ manage connections. It should't connect if it does't have a connections to use
Use TF3D Config to remove tabs. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405749
I removed mail, internet and contacts myself.
or try 'NO DATA' its a cab file in artemis section, you can select and deselect real easy
Thanx a lot for the quick help. TF3D and deleting the connection did the job . I will use NoData.cab for my self, as soon as the HTC Touch pro is out and in my hands.

It's much more easyer to disable autoupdate in weather panel- options . You can disable mail panel using tf3d config.Disable 3g and that's it. You can go online every time you want.
My father has the incredible talent by having no idea what he does, he finally makes the think he isn't supposed . I actually already disablked the weather feature, but he worked his magic.
Good thread! I was wondering this too. But my phone connects with 3G if i am in oprah and my WLAN connection died for a second. I will try nodata though!
I know PhoneAlarm does this, but I don't like having to install SecondToday to use it. It seems to slow my device and switching today screens takes about three seconds.
Anyway, I like Phoneweaver better because it has a popup profile switcher/commmgr menu I can assign to the PTT button. It's good, but it can't toggle 3G like PhoneAlarm. However, it can run an exe on a profile change so all I would need is a small app that can turn 3G on and off. I searched but didn't see anything that appeared to do the trick. Any ideas?
i can't believe something like this doesn't exist. a google search turned up some threads about skschema from 2006 so i guess i'll try those.
no other solution?
i found this thread which has a toggle3g mortscript. i installed it, but it doesn't work, or at least i can't get it to work. it launches to the confirmation screen. but i click OK and nothing happens.
can any of you mortscript experts help out? and, yes, i changed the vjvolubilis directory in the script from \Extended Rom\Program Files to \Program Files\
also any ideas of how to skip the confirmation screen? by the way, i tested it on my old phone, a tilt, which has a dutty rom.

If you edit the mort script you can change this:
Code:
ChoiceDefault( "Toggle 3G","Do you wish to proceed with toggling 3G?",0,10,"Cancel","OK" )
case (1)
#Message( "Cancel" )
Exit
case (2)
#Message( "OK" )
call( "setOpMode" )
case (0)
#Message( "Cancel" )
Exit
EndChoice
to something like this:
Code:
call( "setOpMode" )
That should make each run of the script toggle the 3G reg setting.
thanks. i've been tinkering with it with some help in this other thread also and the poster suggested the same change.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3024082#post3024082
but like i said in that thread, no matter what opmode is set to by the script, HSDPA remains on even though the wireless manager shows that 3G is off (but if i turn 3G off through the wireless manager it completely disables 3G and the today screen only shows an edge connection).
so the script is missing something to completely disable 3G. i just don't know what.
UPDATE: i even tried skchema scripts from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1079636&postcount=5), same results. so obviously simply changing the value of opmode doesn't completely disable 3G.
UPDATE 2: i even tried bandswitch 1.2.3, using the command line. it made the registry changes and the wireless manager showed 3g off, but the H was still on the today screen. so it's something more needed to completely disable 3G via script.
Yeah, I've been poking around with it for a few minutes and noticed there's a few additional reg keys that need to be altered in order to toggle 3G.
I added HKLM\Software\OEM\UMTS\BandSelection\Band, as that is another one that's changed via the Band settings page, but there's still more that needs to be touched.

i noticed the band selection folder, too, but i didn't notice a change. which key changed when you turned 3G off via the wireless manager?
man, it would be great if i could just command line the wireless manager.
After further testing, and using SKtracker, it would appear the changes for 3G/Auto -> GSM are more than just registry changes. Not sure what else it's doing, but modifying the reg settings and cycling the phone radio doesn't do squat. I guess that's why there's programs like Bandswitch/CMP and PhoneAlarm (full). Maybe schap knows what else is involved, as he added a 3G toggle to the 9 button CommMgr on the Kaiser.
This is what Daniel Herrero said about the 2G/3G switching:
Hi.
If you are talking about connections (close idle connections, disable them, etc) then Its win32 api standard. If you talk about switch between 2g-3g then I did reverse ingineering of htc binaries. It was easiest on HTC Hermes, Universal and Athena but in Kaiser (Tilt) It was much more dificult (Strange calls to undocumented htc methods with variable parameters). I am scared about incoming htc models....

So it would seem a simple reg change & radio cycle won't cut it.
