Finger-Friendly Friends (FFF) v1.0 alpha 2 is available! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Everyone: please do NOT post in this thread. Post here instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340227
I promised you some more candy... well, here it is!
There are a couple of bugfixes and a new feature: "Send my position". If you have a GPS receiver in your telephone (such as the HTC Kaiser), you can send your position to your contacts! FFF will track your position and generate a map in Google Maps that can be opened on a PC (mobile phone browsers typically don't support Google Maps. Perhaps Opera 9 will).
It will also create a short link, so your friend won't have to type a zillion-character long address.
Address is http://www.jotto.no/fff
Enjoy!

wow, what a surprising feature. I'm gonna test it right away!!

Wouldn't work on my Vario 3 unless I used Live Search to fix my GPS position first. Cool how it knows where I am with just that short link though. Nice app.

sweet and brilliant ideas!! downloading right now!!!

Looks like this is the new thread for FFF, so I'm going to copy what I posted in the original thread as my comments actually pertain to the most recent version of the software (downloaded Alpha 2 earlier and installed before making these comments in the original thread):
Dwimmerlaik said:
By far the best contact app I've seen developed for Windows Mobile yet. A couple of suggestions:
Allow for scrolling via TouchFlo when there are more contacts that match the search criteria than those displayed on the screen (i.e. the same condition that results in the "more" at the bottom right).
Definitely enable a setting or make it a default function for the installer to modify the registry to make this the default contact application. I don't mind tweaking the registry, but not everyone is comfortable with that.
You have a function to send current GPS location to a friend, how about doing the opposite and have a function to obtain directions from Google Maps from your current location to the Home or Work address of the contact?
In the same direction as #3, I would suggest adding two additional icons to the screen that are labled as "Home Address" and "Work Address". I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to locate some icons that would match the current default set. Clicking on either would display the address and then provide an option to obtain directions to that address from your present location.
Other than those suggestions, great application and I'm looking forward to watching its development. I love it!

hmmm need to get outdoors tmw to test the GPS function..
cant scroll down the list of contacts via dpad? and.. cant see all matches of more than certain number?

Jahnotto,
It froze a couple times, but I got it to work. I think it froze because I tried to exit out of it as it was searching for satellites. Constructively, I think the gps is kind of a neat feature but from a practical standpoint it's more of a "hey...look what my phone can do" more than a required feature. Some of the other suggestions listed would make this a serious go-to tool.
-list and scroll through all the names feature
-operating d-pad scrolling
-corporate and/or middle name search ( I have a bunch of 'Z' entries that I can't look up, they are stored on my SIM...maybe that's why)
-when you get a name isolated to one name, ability to press send key and dial directly
Are these possibilities?
Again, just trying to help and be constructive.
Thank you.

do you need a data plan to send position to a friend?

What do you mean? What's a data plan?

Update: Alpha 3 is now available! A mobile-friendly map link is generated in addition to the full-blown Google Maps map. I have also fixed a bug on the map link.
I have got lots of suggestions to improvements. I appreciate that, but I haven't had the time to reply you all! I'd better spend my time developing this, huh? ;-)
I will not add any additional features in this release. I will now concentrate on fixing bugs and improving general usablity (for example company name search, scrolling, etc, etc).

It's setup so that you are just sending the coordinates in an email with a link to googlemaps. No more data than sending an email.

I'm connecting to the url-shorten service at http://metamark.net/ to shorten the url. It's not much data, though - 100 bytes back and forth or so.

Very Very Very COOL!
Bad thing is that when you send your GPS position via email, it uses "Outlook Email". Problem is, I dont have Outlook Email, I only use Gmail so I cant send an email with my position since I cant seem to change it to use Gmail (or another account other than Outlook).

Same goes for the regular "send email" feature. I will let the user select the email account.

True... However, if you choose "In Outlook" you can choose the account it is sent from. With the "Copy To Clipboard" not working yet, I have to just wish I could use it.

I tested version 3 the last hour and found a bug.
When I get the message 'short link failed' (why??) I can't get rid of the error message.
when I did get that message and clicked it a several times away the buttons on the bottom halve don't work anymore.
Very nice program by the way and a great feature the GPS.
Would be nice if it was possible to let the FFF sent automatic every two minutes an email for example.
please continue developing. I like it very much!!

Mine is getting a fix just fine and reporting the position but I can't tap any of the links like "Send via email".

Hi thanks for a really great app!
Just one suggestion, is it possible to just post one thread for the applicaiton.
You can use the first post to attach new release. This way you will get all the feedback and suggestions in one place.
Another request is if you could just post a short version history list so we could find out what has happened to the application.
Again, thanks for the great work!

Sunnysoft Contacts - EXCELLENT Contacts Manager!

I searched and haven't seen anything posted about this great app. I just installed it last week and I LOVE IT!!! It is by far, the BEST way to manage contacts with an HTC device. I tried PhotoContacts and PocketCM and to me, they were too hard to get used to, IMO. Sunnysoft contacts is very simple and easy to use. When you click the Contacts button, a contact list pops up with 3 liines as default and a keypad also pops up. Just start typing the first few letters of the contacts' name with the keypad and the contact pops right up.
It's really great.

Works with PocketCM, too. You just have to press the lower right button if your device doesn't offer a hardware number keyboard.

hey that number is invalid , I wanted to call Dutty and find out why 6.1 roms are being delayed . I'm using beta 1 and checking everyday for the next version...... Anyway here's a better number +1 973 555 1212
this app has great intentions but it still doesn't work effectively.
It's very hard to scroll using this feature. PocketCM and VITO FunContact I think are better apps then this. It has great ideas but just needs a little more work

I was using Sunnysoft (as registered user) few years ago before the Phone edition of Windows CE. Their support and products was great...happy to see them back.
Sorry for this out of topics.
I like it in general.
I really like:
1) Assign Sunnysoft Contacts to Phone button (use it to replace your dialer)
2) Nice skin and appearance (Fun Contacts does not include a Close button and often leaves it's remnants on my top bar over next app)
3) Call / Mail / SMS / MMS History, both overall and per contact (creates a version of threaded messaging for all four categories)
My complaints so far:
1) Finger scrolling is slow and only scrolls a few items at a time (Fun Contacts does this better)
2) No ability to select "favorites" (again Fun Contacts does this better)
3) Tiny arrows which are difficult to see or use for scrolling through Contact numbers (home, mobile, work, etc.)
4) No keyboard tones when typing (which is why I'm hesitant to use it as my default dialer)
5) SMS History only shows the first line of text (I'd like an option to preview the full message which really would allow me to use it as my default SMS app as well)
Maybe we can get some of these improved features in version 1.3?

Great review. Thank you for sharing. I pretty much agree with everything that you say. Nice work
After playing with Sunnysoft Contacts for the rest of the afternoon, I found another bug. At least on my phone, the MMS's and emails aren't showing up under the individual contact's history. Anyway, this is a nice program and it has a lot of potential. It just needs a little more polish.
My recommendation for the time being is the Vito Fun Contacts & Vito SMS Chat combination. They are visually attractive, simple, easy to use, and integrate well together. I like Fun Contacts favorites feature which makes getting to my frequently used contacts very easy. I think SMS Chat is much better than the Palm Threaded apps. I especially like the envelope with the text message that appears in the middle of your screen whenever you get a message.
Just my opinion for what it's worth.
Tried it, like it but doesn't beat i contact.
for me icontact is the best and it's free. Nothing beats the speed and that is what counts when you have 400 some contacts you call on every day and call you for that matter.
Thanks for sharing, as you know sharing means caring !!!
Yea, I had the Vito SMS Chat, but what I didn't like about that was the fact that the message button didn't link to it, you had to manually start it every time you did a soft reset, and the number one thing I didn't like was that the word completion didn't work with it.
Very nice app. though.

Exactly what I was thinking. How were able to link SMS chat and FunContact I was wondering how to do that myself.

SMS GPS (sms your gps location)

Hey cats, a rom i had included the GPS Location program . kinda neat . but i tried installing it on other roms, but due to it being unsigned it didn't work. and i dunno, i just wanted one like this. the contact list uses your touchflo too . so it's easy to navigate . so i made this ...
Version 2 (Requires .net 2CF)
I didn't want to hook into SMS as a service and keep this app running. So to display someone elses cordinates, you can either click on the google link in the SMS, or copy and paste the cordinates into the App's Search tab. I embedded a http request to the google image server to display the location. Also, if you want to enter a number, just click "SEND SMS" without selecting a contact.
anyway here it is...

Hi, I like that ... a lot ... very handy if you're trying to meet up with your mate.
I don't know if your text includes it, but what about sending a link to google maps, not the mobile version as not everyone has it installed. I wrote a program a few months ago and edited and sent the link below as it works great in the TyTN.
http://m.reimers.dk/?coords=37.4249000549316,-122.007400512695
Also what about a manual phone number entry box.
Get those 2 updates done and it's definately getting a privaledged button on my Home screen shortcuts!!

thanx man . that's exactly why i wrote it . i was heading to a pub the other night.. my friend's asking where it was and he's got an iphone so i was thinking how great it'd be to fire off sms cords in a lightweight app .. no strings attached . now i can, and have!
great to tell your GF how far away you are from picking her up too .. they love that . gives them time to do their hair and pick out sexy undies (hopefully the latter)
i'll make the change for u to add your own number . no problem .. but i do have a question regarding your google map page . it's nice . i'm thinking i can do that in the app itself . did you use an api in your aspx? i'm not familiar with the googly map queries . but i'm curios how you extracted just the image or was it done by a http request and parsing the img src?
Sorry mate, I just found it on the web, it looked optimised for a mobiles screen and it worked great. How it works, no idea!!! I suggest just editing the lat/long with your detail and firing it off do the end user in the SMS. All the other internet maps I looked at were full of advertisments and looked awful.... it took days to find that one!! Hope he never turns it off.

Try locr at www.locr.com It is a very good geotagging client, imho.
thanks for your share
ok Thanks, but i was under the impression from reading the reviews that it had this capability already built in?... ok will have a look at locr
IMO geo tag feature is just a software manipulation that connects image browser/taker with the GPS.
You could also check GeoTerrestrial's GPSToday/GeoTagger (www.geoterrestrial.com). It has a lot of nice features, and does the tagging in the background if you want.
shozu works wonders, use the htc touch cab.

Embed GPS location as a tag into the picture you took with the camera. When uploaded to flickr/picasa, the web album will show a map of where you took the picture.
I tried both LOCR and GPSToday/GeoTagger on my X1. Both either hung the phone or made it run really really slowly. A soft reset was the only way to exit the program. Has anyone used either of these successfully? If so how did you set the application up?
Thanks
I had an XDA Orbit before the X1 and had to alter the registry to enable this feature. Does anyone know if this is possible on the X1 cos I was under the same impression that this should be a feature of the X1
Any ideas how to do this without external software? HTC Touch or any other from latest family can do this...

Don't think there is a way of this right now as the camera app in Xperia doesn't support GeoTagging.

Shozu doesn't embed the GPS pos in the EXIF header. IMHO kind of worthless if you copy the pictures to something else than using the shozu uploader.

Tried locr before, but didn't find it as good to configure and use as GeoTagger.
Here's what I did to get GeoTagger to work:
Download GPSToday (http://www.geoterrestrial.com/gpstoday/)
After installing, on the Today screen, click on the map to get the map/configuration screen up.

Go to More->GeoTag Pictures. This will start the installation of the GeoTagger plugin.
When this is done, you go to the setup of the plugin the same way (More->GeoTag Pictures)
On this screen you have a button named Auto-Run Settings. This is the settings for GeoTegging in the background.
You start or stop the background tagging process with the Start and Stop buttons in this Settings screen. You alse set the watched folder for pictures and how old the pictures can be to still tag them.
If you want to tag the pictures manually (if the GPS didn't connect in time for tagging), you have to stop the automatic geotagging here first, while you do it manually. Then, choose your position (actual position or the one on the map on the map screen), select the time span of the pictures and click on "Show & Confirm". If the button only says "Show" then the autotagging isn't stopped as above. You can also select "Run" if you don't want to confirm.
On the today screen you can click on the clock to set the GPS auto update time intervall. Setting it to an intervall gives you almost instant tagging but you won't have any battery at the end of the day! Setting it to off will start the GPS as soon as you take a new picture and tags it when it gets a fix.
Good luck!
Great howto!
thank you!
I've used GPSed http://www.gpsed.com/ on my X1. It runs in de background and records my location and track. When I get home I use geosetter to match the track that is recorded by GPSed with the photo's I've taken.
Regards,
Bas.

If you want to tag the pictures manually (if the GPS didn't connect in time for tagging), you have to stop the automatic geotagging here first, while you do it manually. re:
I am using Bluetooth GPS (Eztag). It is easy. I just turn on the main device and plug the receivers on the gps port of the camera, turn on the camera, keep the distance range within 10 meters, after nearly 1 minute, they work together.
re:
It sounds really easy. How did you buy it? Does it sell online, I am in Canada.
just use r3a camera software which is available in energy rom .. ull not need to use any software
re:
Yes, rather simple. I ordered it on its web.e-geotag.com Some products made in China are in good quality, like this company, which has agents in Canada. You can order local easytagger.ca.

Release notes
Power saving mode (”Turn off screen” menu option). When you select this option device screen turns off, while Loudtalks keeps running so you can receive messages and respond to them using central navigation key.
Vibrate option (if supported by device). It’s turned on by default so when you set your status to Away or Busy your device will vibrate on new messages. You can turn it off in Settings.
Report a problem… menu option. If something doesn’t work you can send us a report right from the software.
(Hint: even if everything works please use it to send your feedback or suggestions!)
Activate contact list, when switching to Loudtalks from other applications. Now you can use push-to-talk without tapping contact list first.
Automatically select the contact, when new conversation starts. That way when you hear “New conversation” alert, even if your screen is turned off, you can respond immediately by simply pressing PTT hardware button.
The website Loudtalks.com will automatically detect Windows Mobile device browser and display a mobile-optimized page so the easiest way to get the new Loudtalks is to visit Loudtalks.com on your device

Link not found... but it sounds fun
anyway, here is the link according to the reviews, it should work on Touch Pro Sprint
However, as I understand how it work, although it's free, you still have to pay for the internet to get a connection, right? (that isn't cheap man)
Oops sorry
I've updated the link sorry
http://loudtalks.com/LoudtalksSetup.exe
There is one bug:
you cannot add or accept contacts on the ppc you must do that on the windows (PC) version
But then it works great
PC version:
http://loudtalks.com/
What are differencies in comparison with Palringo?
I don't like in PR these things:
- voice history is saved on the server and all the time you want to play them,it is necessary to download it
- you push the button and it starts to recording. after you release it,it sends it,so not realtime. how is it working here?
Anyway,it looks great.
yes it is real time and no downloading messages.
just like walkie talkies
Well, that looks great! I missed an info about history. Is it saving as some file each message or how? And it will be available for Smartphones as well? I am using SP's and it can be very good choice,if it can use all resolutions(QCIF,QVGA,QVGAls) and OS(WM2003 as well).Yes and how about transfer rate? Is GPRS/EDGE enough?
Great one!!!
Thanks
Interesting app. I'm testing now

Yes GPRS is enough. The history (voice messages) you can find them if there is a blue arrow. if you click on the arrow you see the history of that contact. you can play them as much as you like.
Loudtalks is only available for Windows desktop and Windows Mobile based handhelds
It should work fine on devices with 400 MHz+ processor and on Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6.0.
Anyone tried this out? How well does it work???
Any plans to port Loudtalks client to BlackBerry? My team has a mixture of WinMo and BB devices. I am WinMo, of course, but some of the suits haven't seen the light yet.

Mark, this works very well. Since the update last week it is much better, faster en clearer.
Even now you get an roger beep befor you receive a message on the phone.
Also you can "send"speak to laptops and pc with speakers and a mic.
You can always try and you can speak to your self with the echo user.
I tested the echo, works good. But I cannot delete the messages. None of my buddy's got a Window Mobile. They prefer cheap old fashion flip phones.
Add me: xhypnotik
I want to see if it works with people.

Lol! They need to make a popup or whatever when someone adds you. I almost didn't see the small flag located on the bottom right hand corner.
yeah it's hard to see, but it is better then last week.
The previous version it wasn't possible to add people or accept people. You had to accept new people on a window pc.
So it will be better, i hope.
This is a great app, been usinbg it for two weeks with wifey on our Touch Pro's
Hey guys.
take a look here pahhleese

Nice thread
Good luck
So how can I map it to my ptt button? I installed but it didn't map it. I'm using RSW 1.6 rom. Works fine with onscreen button, but would work much better to ptt button. I can make a link to it, but just need to know the parameters.

[App] I-RSS - Beta Closed (Updated 29.7.2011)

This page is about the development of new Windows phone 7 RSS Client - I-RSS. It's in the final stage of development and the goal is to create fast, nice, intuitive and competitive RSS Reader - and then push it to Marketplace. The application will probably have free and paid version (which will cost less than $2), making it attractive for users.
Screenshot is truly Work In Progress! Last Update 10.3.2011
And what I'm currently planning for it?
An intuitive and clean RSS reader with Metro-like interface
Progress: 95%
Option to add feeds directly or by choosing from webpage
Progress: 95% (now only timeouts to handle)
Import / Export feeds from / to other feed aggregators
Preparing import from Google Reader, later sync with GR
Add selected news to Instapaper / Read It Later - to read them later
Progress: 85%
Sort the incoming news by date, source
Progress: 98%
Flag some news items so you can return to them later
Progress: 100%
Search in downloaded news
Progress: 99% - every time there is something to do better
Push notifications, toasts and live tiles
OK, this is unreal for the first versions of the app. I'll need to learn LOT about servers.
Progress of actual coding is currently approx. 85%.
Thanks goes to Captainkrtek, emuneee and mei_liberi_fatali for developing with me!
Stay tuned for news and CONTRIBUTE with your ideas!

Original post:
Hello folks,
I had an idea recently of writing a RSS application for WP7 which would not be based on Google Reader or anything like that. But I've caught myself into a limiting Microsoft trap.
And that is: How will users add feeds? Typing the whole URL of the feed? Not really good solution, I guess. Hovewer, I came with one solution, at last.
User would type in the address of the website (ie. www.cnn.com) and the application would search for all avaible RSS sources there and let user choose.
So I will need your help. What do you think about that? Do you have any other things you think they are worth trying?
Thanks in advance
I-RSS Reservé
I think I'll reserve this one, in case I would release the app...
I don't see where the problem is in combining both in the same place.
You need an URL entry field anyway. Once the user hits enter, make a request to the URL. If it's a RSS feed that's returned, add it immediately, if it's HTML, scan for RSS feed links in the meta section and have the user select.
also make sure you have an import export function, something that is universal i think is OMAP?

Well, there is no problem with that, actually it was my suggestion. Thanks for confirming my thoughts.

Be sure I'll do that... but that's another problem, where to load from / save to? We could maybe import feeds from Google Reader, but what would be the point of G:RSS then? (Items sync... I know )
Export... I could send the OPML file (no OMAP!) through email but I have to make sure I can do that using dev tools first.
Or upload to some file sharing server...
Anyways: Stay tuned for news!
Hope you've got more planned for your rss feed reader than automatically finding feeds based on domain name since Google reader already does that.
imho - syncing with an existing rss reader is the best bet. What user would want to have to resubscribe to all their feeds?
I wouldn't want to resubscribe but quite often want to add a feed on my phone as it's my primary device for casual browsing. Lack of copy/paste is a real limiting factor.
You have got here one big problem - no background app running possibility, so when new RSS comes, you won't be able to download it without firing the application first.
The only way how to get notifications is via online notifications, which means you'll have to run server where you'll fire these notifications to phone.
Or that's what I remember from KeyNote...
Of course I'm planning more things for my application! Push notifications will be a pain in the back for a while - let's hope I'll sort that out.
BTW I've updated the first post with some of my progress! Please check periodically to see what I want to have in the app and contribute with anything you find useful! In a while (few days) I'll add some screenshots with my progress.
First screenshots added
Okay, so I'm releasing first screenshots of the actual I-RSS design. You can find them in the first post, along with some progress changes.
The design can be changed, as well as other things - nothing is final, as there is still lot of work to do. Please write if you don't like it or you have some thoughts. (But also write if you like it ) This way we'll make better app for you and everyone else!
The offer to contribute to development is still valid! It's also in the first post.
Thanks for any response!
Hi, good to see RSS feeds!
Please pressurise XDA to support some useful thread subscription feeds for use with this app, it is something seriously lacking here.
Although I can't offer developer time (don't have WP7 etc and other projects) I will be happy to talk through design ideas and concepts as I am working on wm6 sense RSS tab so there will be useful concepts for both.
Feel free to have a look in the RSSTab wiki, as I aim to collect ideas etc in there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sense_RSS_Tab_Project
Although the main focus of the tab is to create the means to a generic tab rather than fancy features, there are some I am hoping to implement eventually.
All the best.
Hey meltwater,
your ideas for Sense RSS Tab are neat! I'll certainly use some of them in my app (of course different way so it fits into WP7 design). There are some (i.e. offline mode and levelled design) I'm actually using to achieve my goals - Windows Phone 7 developer tools make this much easier.
As I see it, I should make wiki page as well, seems like your ideas are very inspiring for me! And to the RSS subscriptions in XDA-devs forum... Well, I'm in touch with Captainkrtek as he offered help with my project. Be sure I'll pressurize enough
Hey Paulos,
Sorry I havent been corresponding with you, been very busy! Ill try to see what I can do in the next few days

Sound good, always good to put in ideas which are a little different and add value. At the moment trying to work out a good process for storing feeds which are no longer present in the downloaded feed. Hopefully compact .net is ok with generating xml but I doubt it, one way or another will do it.
What I've seen of windows phone 7 development the graphics and animations are very slick right out the box, where wm is a pig. Hopefully wp7 or sliverlight can be put on wm devices, would soften the effort ms is making killing off wm development.

You can serialize and deserialize in C#, there should be no problem with that (I encountered one but nothing to worry about ). But there can be performance issues I actually met today when I combined deserializing with sorting and filtering. But important is the actual performance on device so I'll wait until Captainkrtek will have some more time.
And don't think developers for WP7 have things so easy. You still have to code many of the transitions you need.

Yep I need to work on my xml de/serializing etc, just did some basic code to test the concept out, can now tidy it up. Hopefully it'll lead to other sense tabs using the same methods, moves the coding to .net rather than tackling sense scripts. When you post up a wiki I will link it from mine then!
OK, so I've updated my progress a bit on the first page and there are some new screenshots. By the way, when I've been looking on YouTube, I found some other interesting RSS readers that are being developed. See for yourself:

I've already created the Wiki page - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=I-RSS_Project - but it needs to be completed. I don't have enough time today... maybe tomorrow?

I think the 1st one of the two, some interesting ideas (although how easy it is to find what you want is another thing).
Just been looking at Custom Feeds from searches, found that Bing supports &Format=rss option to create feeds, and Google allows you to create custom ones from your Google Alerts. Will add them and see how the results work out.
I've added a cross-link to your wiki, like the progress on your 1st page, if only it would work on wm too!
nice, but remember you don't show to much information on 1 page
