How is the reception? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi guys!
This question is for those of you who upgraded from TyTN. How is the reception compared to TyTN? Same? Better? Worse?
Especially, interested in AT&T service.
I've recently moved and reception in my new place really sucks, particulary in-doors. Over than that, I really like my phone. But i keep thinking if I should upgrade to get better reception.
And yes, I had tried different ROMs and different Radios.
Thank you!

I had a tytn and the reception is the same. Compared to my other phones:
Nokia is the best, then my imate SP5, Tytn II and the worsed is my palm treo 750v.

I'd say it's at least as good as my TyTN, maybe slightly better.

Anybody else?
Anybody else would like share their opinion on this topic?
Please!
Seriously, I am sick and tired of those dropped calls.

my Tilt (as-shipped radio/rom) gets a better signal than my 8525 (numerous Black roms and at least 5 different radios)

Thanx!
Thanx for the input, roboHaxx!

You might want to do a search as there have been many many threads on this.......................

Terrible!! Yesterday we were out in the desert. We were 9 in total, I was the only one without signal. Others either had Nokia or SE.

thanks for the comment, CorruptedSanity.
Doesn't sound very encouraging.
For me, I don't have problems with my TyTN outdoors. But the indoors things age getting real ugly. Like, 9 people in the room and I am the one without the signal.
Strange thing, sometimes it does show 2 or 3 bars before I start dialing, but it cannot connect and call ends with no bars.

Thats exactly what I faced yesterday. I had signal bars from 1 to 3 but it would not connect the call. It would say dialling or I dunno connecting but would never go through. I got up,walked around, even stood on the car but nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dwella got a link? Im not sure which terms to use in my search.

Damn, I hate that, being out in the desert in Abu Dhabi.
No way am I upgrading to Kaiser.

Where abouts in the Abu Dhabi desert? I think my situation was a single anomaly.

New Vario III - How happy am I!

Hay Guys
Just moved over from the Hermes Forum as I finally received my new Vario 3! Absolutely adore the handset, vastly more attractive than the Vario 2, however it is noticeably heavier.
Liking the touch screen, and needless to say I am not sure I will need phoneAlarm anymore to manage missed calls or anything!
Very impressed with the fact it has 128Mb Ram, does this make a difference over the Vario 2?
So much to play with lol!
Welcome to the fold. Totally agree its the best phone I've ever had!
(except a trusty SE K700i that still works after over 3 years [ab]use.)
Two happy Kaiser owners! HTC should treat you well as your kind doesn't grow on trees...

Really? You can count me in the happy club too, I've not found anything to complain about.
Pray that you've got one that auto switches properly between 2G and 3G.
See here and here
I'm waiting for my replacement right now.

No probs here - mine has to switch between 2 and 3G areas a few times each day, which it does without issue. No dropped calls or anything like that.
Are you on T-Mobile with a Vario III and "stock" firmware?
No, but then neither are some of the people in those threads you've posted - it looks like more of a hardware issue.
Mine is actually a Vodafone "V1615", debranded with the HTC stock firmware. On Vodafone, obviously.
True but a large number are. Just wondered if this was more prevalent on T-Mobile.
I'm happy - no problems, either.

The PHONE

I’m really confused as to why there is not a huge outcry by Kaiser users regarding dropped calls and complaints from people on the other end indicating voice drop outs.
Is this limited to certain areas only? It happens to me regularly here in south Florida. The voice drop out issue is fairly serious to me. I have read only a few posts regarding this issue.
Should this issue be raised a little louder to the powers that be? The Kaiser is a phone after all and conversations should be a no brainer for any phone!
Anyone else?
Thanks.
Joe
I have never had any of the problems you speak of here in south carolina.
Have you installed the bluetooth fix available from HTC to deal with 'dropped calls' problem?
Works fine for that here in the UK too...
I had the same problem but only when I was calling with my g/f, then I realize that my girls phone is damaged and my keiser is ok.
So in Europe its fine
I live in Tampa and haven't had any issues. ROM and radio version issues, perhaps?
I am in Chicago and I don't have any of those problems, you must be in a bad cell area.
Are you on bluetooth? are you using speaker phone? or does it always happen? are you talking to people on same network?
As far as reception, dropped calls, and audio quality; the Tilt is probably the best phone I've ever used. I remember when I first got it, people would ask if I had a new phone. Just about everyone commented that it sounded great on their end.
BTW, I'm in the DFW, Tx area.
I'm in UK, but have also used my Kaiser in France, Germany and Romania - all ok. Maybe you've flashed a ROM and not selected the right radio.
If you've flashed a ROM check here for which radio is correct.
Been using my phone in Thailand and India, without any problems so far relating to the Signal and call drops.
The signal is actually better with the Tytn II than my previous P3300.

Ummmm, because simply because this is happening to you doesn't mean that it is happening to everyone else?
Frankly, it sounds like a geographic issue.

Well, it certainly is not happening only to me but I guess it is not as wide spread as I ASSumed it was. I definitely recall reading others with similar issues but....
Maybe it is just at&t’s network in south Florida. Had these issues with 3 different Kaisers.
Joe
I'm at work now (I work at an AT&T store) and I'm looking at the internal coverage map. Florida has decent coverage overall but it is admittedly weaker in the southern areas (Pretty much everything south of Tampa). There are good spots but it's mostly "moderate" coverage. This basically means that your phone will work in the open but there are no promises indoors or in cars. Hope this clears things up a bit.
No problems of the sort here in New Orleans, La. I believe i had one hiccup on a call and dropped it once when it switched from 3G to Edge.
You might want to try a new ROM and radio. I do some business in Miami and forgot that I had the Tilt the last time I was there. Think I was using Alex's UC then (Dutty's v2 Medium now) and had no problems - both via the phone itself and bluetooth. Good luck.

Goodbye useless TyTN 2 - Hello iPAQ 614c!

Well, I got so sick and tired of the constant problems... I've finally ditched my ludicrously over-priced & under-performing TyTn 2 and upgraded to a 614c.
I'm bitterly disappointed in HTC and the quality of their products and I'll never entertain buying another one again.
The main (and most frustrating problem) was the fact the caller could rarely hear me, even with full signal. 6 months of "I can't hear you, you are fading in and out" just adds to the frustration regarding the video quality & bluetooth/parrot 3100 pairing issues.
I honestly don't know how HTC have the bare-faced cheek to sell, what is essentially, an unfinished product.
Performance-wise, my old Mio A701 walked all over the TyTn 2. It was quicker to startup, quicker during use and the video quality was FAR superior. Sure, the standard stylus breaks every few months but that's a £2.99 fix!
To give you an idea of how little use I've got from it, the total call timer says I've spent just 3hrs 28 minutes on the phone. I've spent longer on the phone to HTC trying to get the soddin' thing fixed.
// rant
sucks for you, but you definately had a defective unit. i've never had any problems with people hearing me, and have always had great voice quality. i also have no problems pairing with my bluetooth headset and using it flawlessly with voice command. good luck
omar
I agree with omaralt.. No problems on my side with the Tilt...
My ipaq 614c also ships from Clove tomorrow that is Monday.
I am not generally too unsatisfied with my TyTn II but it is the slow EDGE that is getting on my nerves.
Now I have taken a risk as I have never before used a non-HTC thing before.
Just hope the ipaq does not disappoint me as I am already hearing something about low external speaker volume and not so easy to use touch scroll wheel
Call quality is not a problem I hace ever had with my TyTN 2. Like others have said, maybe you had a defective unit.
never had that with mine *knock on wood
Please let us know about the 614c when it arrives.
I'm very interested in the performance of this device cause it is an interesting alternative to the Kaiser.
My entire office is using the kaiser, we've just had our phone/network provider in(orange) to talk about the multitude of problems.
Poor video quality(without a doubt), constantly losing connection to the network, poor reception(next to other phones), screen crashing, slow rotation, etc.
Theres a rule in the office, anyone who says 'i hate my phone' has to buy a round of drinks. Thats how bad it's got.
I never had these issues with my XDA, official rom(5 or 6) or not. I'd only recommend it to anyone if they buy it offline, qualifying them for manufacturer updates, which of course don't seem to appear from the network providers and don't work properly if you try anyways.
Thankfully i didn't pay anything for this piece of turd, i'd be really pissed if i did.
it sounds like your finding your self an excuse to move to another unit. if those problems were bothing you so much, why didnt you just post them here and there would most likey be fixes for all of them. NO device is perfect no matter how expencive it is. there will always be problems ehre and there and thats why people are constantly fixing them.
i personally am happy with my tilt i have never had any problems that you have mentioned before. its either the areea that your in or yes it oculd be that you have a bad phone.

If you had done your research before posting that, you would realise that I 'did' in fact post all the problems here and several people chimed in saying they'd had the same issues. After 6 months, 3 returns and several frustrated customers, I don't need to find an excuse to replace the unit. I'm replacing it because as many of you have already proven, it's a half-baked attempt at a decent PDA. The video issue is unforgivable, so too is the lack of response from HTC.

It's certainly not the area. I have had numerous phones over the years and never experienced these issues before. Nokia 3210, Nokia 7650, Sony/E T68Motorola V525, Mio A701 and they didn't struggle to get a signal. The TyTn 2 says it has full signal, but the microphone still fades in and out.

Apart from the keyboard, it's better equiped than the TyTn 2. How it looks really doesn't bother me... I'm more interested in useable functionality.
In terms of speed & video quality, it wipes the floor with the TyTn 2! I didn't expect a brand new, £480 smartphone to lag when scrolling! I have a 2210 here testing a new RDBMS system, and that runs perfectly.
You have to admit, HTC have dropped the ball in some areas!
Only problem I have had was when I first purchased the unit, swapped it out with a new one - no problems.
The video really is not that big of a deal - Coremedia player plays the video fine for what I require and not that picky. Everything is sweet!
Find it hard to think that the mass units sold of this device and the success HTC & ATT&T has had with it that only a selective few have problems.
Good luck with the new device..

i understand when people are frustrated over devices especially when they dont do what they are sappose to do. taht is one of the reasons why i spent so much money in the past swapping out phone because there was never one that would have to meet my expectations, but then i realized that in this day and age there cannot be "perfect"
i am sure when you swap out for the ipaq you are going to find things on that you dont like.
the ipaq is newer so..... could be a change
Hi Mike 19722
Why do you say so. Just because of the looks and size or do you have you experienced the device. You know I am worried because mine is on order from Clove as a replacement for my TyTn II. Hope I have not made a wrong decision.
Thanks and do let me know if it is just the looks which bother you.

Perhaps andaroo exaggerated a bit, but there is some truth behind it. With the exception of smaller size and the addition of GPS, the Kaiser is more or less on par with my years-old Blue Angel (which still works nice without a single patch or update). I have had so many phones, but the Kaiser gave me the maximum headaches, this is for sure. We're really doing field tests & debugging for HTC here.

this as posted by visionit, not by myself!
I disagree with the above statement!
moreover I would say the htc/se experia 1 is an unfinished product!
I understand why you would want to defend your own phone, but you cannot ignore the fact that HTC have done little to assist frustrated users wrt the gfx issues, laggy scrolling, slow functionality and the overall 'dated' feel of the product.
As I said earlier, the Mio A701 (whilst missing some of the functionality of the TyTn 2) still outperformed it in nearly every way. That is unforgivable! The TyTn 2 was nearly double the price and in my eyes, it's not even half as good.
Faulty products I can deal with, but pi$$ poor service AND a faulty product I cannot! 3 returns, countless telephone calls, 6 months, several angry customers... where would 'you' draw the line?
I'd disagree about the 614c being 'ugly', but I guess that's subjective. I couldn't care less if it was pink with frills; as long as it worked properly. The TyTn 2 (as good as it looks) just doesn't perform as well as it should. The hardware is good, but it's bottle-necked by something...

2X Antenna Signal Issue

Hi foks!
I've read in a Tech review that de 2x is withnissing signal droppes when held with your hand.
Can anyone conform this,
I know it will drop on every phone these days and I don't mind if the signal drops.
As long as not everything drops.... (so you still have atleast one signal bar).
I have big hands and am worried about this problem.
I know where your coming from here my hands arnt the smallest..... maybe a case will help? (laughs.... iPhone 4)
Then don't cover the bottom of the phone where the antenna is located.
No problems here.
No problems here either both wifi and gsm are stable

I don't have antenna problems (as far as i've noticed) but.... I do have one strange problem, I am able to call, and be called., but sometimes I can't hear anything and I'm also not able to talk to the other person. The other person can't hear me as well, it's like a total calling black-out. After rebooting a few times, it works again.. Does anyone has this as well ? (I haven't found out what's causing this)

I have this issue when the setting is on GSM/UMTS. Then when holding the phone operating it normally you can see the signal drop to one bar and sometimes zero bar. When set to GSM only I get full bar any which way I hold it.
The antenna is clearly on the bottom of the device. Covering it with the palm kills the signal bassically. True tale.
From anandtech:
"Signal Attenuation Comparison in dB—Lower is Better
Cupping Tightly Holding Naturally On an Open Palm
LG Optimus 2X 13.7 9.3 5.9
Nexus S 13.3 6.1 4.3
Droid 2 11.5 5.1 4.5
BlackBerry Torch 15.9 7.1 3.7

I tried it now with 2 hands and full signal. There is no difference.

How long have you been having these issues?
Are you 100% sure it's not carrier issues / local interference.
I manage 15+ mobiles of various makes at work and see the issues you describe maybe once a year, they are usual resolved by rebooting a couple of times and maybe waiting an hour or two.

I had these issues since Tuesday evening and Wednesday almost all day, after booting up to 3 times, it works for a few moments and then it was dead again(I also had some problems with changing the volume in media, the buttons just didnt work in some games). So today i decided to do a hard reset, and so far everything seems like it's working. I tried to call a few times today, and it worked. But there was one moment there was this strange noise, like a zooming bee.. really soft, but the other person could hear it better than me. I was also able again to change the media volume in games.
If i experience any troubles I'll share them again Thanks for the replies so far

It happened again -.- Can't hear or talk again. Going to call LG and T-mobile about it tomorrow

I decided the cancel my contract renewal with this phone. Returned it to T-mobile and i'll just wait a few more months to see what will come ! I just didn't want to take a risk to use the VIP service within the 8 days you can decide to agree on the contract or not. And also, having to use the VIP service while your phone is just 2 days old gives me a bad feeling about this phone (also reading other stories about bugs and stuff). I hope others do enjoy their phone

Terrible reception

So i just traded my HTC Tilt 2 for a brand spankin new iPhone 3gs and I love it but the reception is just terrible. It just loses signal for no reason and it sometimes takes a minute to come back. It loves to drop calls and not send messages. This happens with both 3g and EDGE. I dont know if its the phone the hardware or the software. Off to Nashville (1.25 hrs away) to go to the apple store to get a new one. Has anyone else had this issue? Also the earpeice volume is very low. Maybe its because im used to the incredible sound my tp2 had. Good thing i have this applecare and everytihing is going to be free for 2 years.
Trade it for an HD2 and problem solved
Might not be the phone. I have notices crappy service from AT&T for the past few weeks. Drops calls when before I had 4 bars and was able to talk without a problem.
Are you holding it wrong?
Couldn't resist..

Yeah. Didn't read teh OP, but I think that the wedding ceremony was kinda bad too. I mean, no open bar? Prudes.
... wait this thread is from 2011? Are Apple still making 3GS'? It's probably just your network, I always hear about bad reception problems with iPhone's, but I've never had one problem ever with mine, on a carrier in Ireland who's not even supposed to have the phone lol.
