Should I buy this phone? - Wing, P4350 Herald Upgrading

I nearly bought this phone tonight before T-Mobile decided to charge me full price. I decided ebay might be a better place to buy one instead of paying 500 dollars for an iphone wannabe. It looks like a nice phone. I really like the wifi feature. I intend to use the wifi in my home as I already have wifi though out the house in use with my wifes computer and my PS3. It seemed like it would fit nice. I want to be able to surf the internet and maybe use google maps and google talk via the phone and wifi. I assume that can be done. After reading a few reviews though I put a screeching halt on my ebay bids. The phone seems to suffer from serious memory issues. Every negative review dealt with the memory or lock ups which I assume were also memory related. It appears the phone ships with a slow processor and not enough memory. I have no problems with buys a microSD card in the 2 to 4 gig range if that will solve the memory issues. I intended on buying one anyway for the application storage. Will the additional memory solve the issues with the phone? Are there updates to the phone that will correct these issues possible since many of the reviews were written? Are there currently SAFE work arounds that would correct the memory issues? I am no stranger to fooling around with this type of thing but at 300 dollars and considering that I am buying on ebay, I'm affraid i wont be in a position to gamble with the phone. If made the purchase through T-mobile I could possibly return the phone but ebay is another matter. Many of the sales are final. I dont want this phone if it requires flashing Rom's or extensive worj arounds to get the phone working.
So I will rely on your opinions on whether or not to make this purchase. If not this phone..what phone? I use t-mobile and dont want an unlocked phone so it would need to be one of their available products. I hear the MDA isnt bad. I really like the idea of a windows mobile OS as it would allow me to put darn near any app on the phone I want to. I want WIFI. I want to be able to use google talk and google maps on the phone and I really like the idea of surfing the web for free on my couch useing full functioning browsers not those mobile editions. Any recomendations if not the Hearld/Wing? Can I get the Wing to work properly and not freeze, hang up, lock up, or require constant reboots?

Point Blank you will have to change the rom on the wing in order to get some performance out of it, I switched from the MDA and the first day I got the wing I wanted my MDA back, but after changing the rom I forgot all about my big fat MDA even though The MDA has a 1250mAh battery and the wing just has a 1130mAh Batt.
If you do not want to do a rom upgraded you can take a shot at the Shadow, which has twice has much built in Memory and Storage, but its just a smartphone not a full PPC ................
also the MDA has been Dis-continued so if you buy one it will be a re-furb.

on second thought, You might just have to change the paging pool size and that should free up some Memory. and its too easy to do, and you can also delete and uninstall some files and programs you have no need for

I saw a few articles about both the rom and the page file. In your opinion, is changing the rom a wise thing to do with little to no support? I know that rom updates are risky, but on computers for example, its such a slick and easy process that there is little to no risk. Would a rom update on the wing be a wise thing to do? Is the available rom from a reputable sourse or is this something "Cody the 12 year old" made? I really want to make this wing my next phone but I dont want a 400 dollar PDA/cell phone that does neither correctly.

Hi,
I have not created my own rom, but have recooked a few version of the Touch-IT v2.3 wing by itje. Recooking a rom is a long process, creating a rom would take even longer.
I've flashed my wing over 80 times now during testing new roms and recooking.
I've bricked the phone a lot of times in the process but with the orignal ruu, its no big deal.
I'm pretty sure itje and other fine rom cookers in this forum are not 12 year olds.
If you want to buy the wing then buy it and tjem read the forum and learn how to flash new roms and change page pool size.
If you want a faster and more powerful phone then buy the Kaiser.
Thanks for reading.

funny you should mention the Kaiser. I just finished reading up on that one. Thats a serious phone. It's way more phone and money then I am prepared to pony up. Is this the next best option for me?
I didnt mean any offense on the 12 year old statement. I certainly wasnt refering to anyone in particular or members of this board. I was mearly trying to imply unproven rom techniques. It sounds like there is well tested processess probably on this board for flashing the rom. It will likely be a safe process for me.
Would there be another recomendation for T-mobile if not the Kaiser or the Wing?

T-mo currently has 3 windows based devices listed which are the Wing, The Dash and The shadow, both the Dash and the shadow are smartphones and not PPC .................. since you dont want to have to unlock another device to be able to use it, I would recomend that you get the wing and while its being shipped to you read this thread about changing the Paging Pool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324955
When you get the phone try give the 4mb Paging pool a test (thats what I use)
and if you still do not like it or just want to see how much better it is try a Rom upgraded I recomend Touch-IT wing 2.3 cooked by itje and he is not the 12 yr old that beat you in online gaming ................ you can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340403
The installation is VERY VERY easy, but make sure to read the instruction in the folder and if you skip a line you will brick your phone ......................... but if you do brick your phone its pretty simple to unbrick, just re-flash the official rom .................... I can't seem to find that link (or too tired to look) but if someone can post it please do, If i come home tomorrow and no one has posted a link I will upload it for you

great info. phone purchased and ill be sure to give those tips a go. thanks

Just a note. Make sure you read and then RE-READ the instructions provided with every rom. And its also a good thing to get the T-Mobile official RUU as once the phone is bricked, this is the only rom that will unbrick it. I don't want to scare you because it's actually a very easy process. I have flashed itje's rom to several of my co-workers (were all T-Mobile employees) with no unrecoverable issues.

Changing Orange ROM.

Quite new to all this and have spent time with search, so please don't shout at me!
I still own a Tytn which I've been very happy with speed wise. Orange have sent me a Tytn ii now which i think is a great machine, however the lag and speed issues are really getting to me now. I understand that Orange are not the best when it comes to customising these phones and as a result is one of the main reasons it runs so slow. I spoke to Orange tech today and they said i wouldn't invalidate my warranty if i changed the ROM. Will it get this phone moving to a usable speed? I love the functions of this phone (GPS, keyboards better, BRIGHT screen! etc..) but the speed is taking the p*#s now.If anybody can recommend a good ROM (?) that would be great. Any help gratefully received.
hi and welcome to the forums. you can start your upgrading by reading through this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
i can tell you that basically any cooked rom will give you a speed improvementover a shipped rom. i'm not gonna give any suggestions, there's just too many different personal preferences when it comes to choosing a rom, just read through this and the upgrading forums....you will see many opinions, probably someone whould even post their opinion here too. good luck

I very much doubt that! I bet they wouldn't put that in writing.
Afaik orange don't release rom updates and how could they support your device with some other rom on it?
Either way, I couldn't care less about it voiding the warranty, the stock orange rom is pants. I've never looked back since flashing a cooked rom.
As already mentioned, there are too many roms to say which is the best, it's a personal thing.
I personally like Duttys v4 (eek! looks as sig and realizes its waaay out of date, been running v4 for a while now), its quick, reliable and just generally feels nice.
"I very much doubt that! I bet they wouldn't put that in writing."
I asked the chap today and he said "because you had the phone direct from Orange we would repair or replace even if customised" I did say " are you SURE about that and he said yes. Having said that, every time i speak to them about anything they contradict each other! Ive been with them a long time and because I'm a heavy user they generally treat me right. I hope he was right, i did ask him for his name and i logged the time of call so hopefully if it does screw up I've got some comeback. Thanks for the quick replies.

There is a big jump from "customisation" which to them probably means not using the crappy orange home to flashing a new rom.
my 2p worth.
I specifically said i want to change the ROM. He said OK. Sod it, its next to useless anyway with their crap software. If i brick it I'll "accidentally" drop it into the bath and let my home insurance get me a new one.

Just be sure to read and sock in all of the guides, then theres very little chance of bricking it
Well, I took the plunge, but as a nessesity rather than option.
I'm with TMobile and they wanted £180 for the upgrade plus put up my tariff £10 per month (was on 25% for life plus £10 loyalty discount) so effectively upgrade would cost £320.
Got a new Orange 12 mnth contract and phone for £70. Other half now has 12 month orange contract sim rather than PAYG, and I followed the sim unlock and flashed Duttys 6.1 ROM with 3 days of getting the phone. Orange phone looks much better than Vario 3 too.
Just follow the instructions to the letter and you won't look back!
Cheers for everyone's help! Much appreciated. Now, does anyone know why slide to unlock pretty much messes my phone up???!!! Orange ROM causing the problem?? I get the main screen but the slider doesn't slide and then i just get a blank screen!
If you are up for flashing a new rom... then don't muck about with applications yet.
Read up. Flash the correct SPL, then choose a rom, flash it (and simunlock if its a 6.1 rom as you need a 6.1 compatible radio) and then use it for a couple of days and see what you like.
If you dont like the new rom - flash another... It can become quite addictive!

Should I get an HTC Touch Diamond?

I have read lots about the Diamond in the last couple of days with many conflicting views. But it seems like this site is full of tweaks that might actually improve the phone.
Can the users here tell me if they think I should get one and give just one reason why?
Thanks,
Jon
please read before you bother to post
this is asked all the time....
you need to take the time to read and make up your own mind
i am more than happy with my diamond
welcome to the forum
Same here happy as a dog with my Jewel.
I believe all my fellow Forum members are 100% happy of the powerful Jewel they own.
Trust us you wont be disappointed specially after a visit to the kitchen
Im happy with mine coming from a nokia n95, ok the diamond could do with a flash and a better battery.
Other than that its all good....
There are loads of posts about this dotted over the forum, granted they are a bit of a trek to find.
It all depends on what you want to use the phone for. For my needs its great. Plays music, cameras ok, the VGA screen is really really nice and I do actually like TouchFlo 3D.
Good luck with the searching, and hope you find the answers to help you decide.
And I have to say the Diamond is the best phone ive owned, and ive had a lot of mobiles and pdas in the past. Its mainly thanks to this forum for that. So many dedicated people. Thanks xda!
Part of the reason for me leaning towards the Diamond is the existence of this forum. When I found it, I thought to myself, "Wow! Loads of help at hand, regular ROM updates, tweaks, the lot!"
Currently I have an old Sony Ericsson K750i and the joystick barely works now, so it would be a big step up.

Well im sure it would better than the current SE phone. Heres some of the reasons why i love my diamond.
1. So many app / utils / tweaks available and very cheap to buy extra programs for it. (donations to developers are all good to!)
2. Activesyncing my phone to my pc, always been an easy task with Windows Mobile.
3. Being able to control my phone using my PC (MyMobiler - excellent little program)
4. The Small size of the phone, it really is very small! Easy to use one handed
5. Screen Quality - VGA, you wonder how you coped before!
6. Easy to transfer info to and from the phone - Activesync or Removable Drive (USB Flash drive)
7. GPS - Tomtom on your mobile, excellent! Works very well
8. 4GB Storage - Plenty of space for what i need.
There are tons more! Post would be the longest on here if i kept on talking! hehe!
Here's my 2 cents. Got my Diamond yesterday, loved it, it look so wonderful. Just bear in mind that I am coming from a Trinity with a fast ROM.
I started to play around with the phone for awhile and took me back to when Winduhs released that beta testing Vista. It looked nice and pretty but it was a pain to use after you've been using XP for a while.
Regardless of what i just said, i love the Diamond and I might keep it. It makes my Trinity looks like a monster but it lags too much as it is.
If support and constant updates/improvements is what you're looking for, you've found the right phone. This forum is above and beyond any community I've ever seen when it comes to tweaks, ROMs, and any sort of improvement you could possibly make to your device. Just make sure to read all directions and pay attention closely, a lot of these things can turn your beautiful Diamond into a $700 brick.
Mainly because it's a tool which simplifies my work/life...not a mere toy to be shown on saturday evening (any reference is casual )
But in any case those are all personal opinions, I think you should make your own considerations and evalutions of a product before to buy that or another.
Be a subject talking about an object, not viceversa
Got mine last Thursday on Vodafone... it was nice, but a little laggy, then I updated it with a cooked ROM (swiftBL I think it was) and its a little beast now! Best phone ever!
Trying to get TomTom 7 on it at the mo.
For my first WinMo (coming from a Motorola KRZR) its just superb! And with a little READING the instructions, its pretty easy to update the ROM, add apps etc...
Get one and never look back!
Please don't be a fanboy!

If you have no problem to spend some extra money in missed calls, in general is a good toy.
THERE IS A UNSOLVED BUG WITH THE PHONE ON SCEEN BUTTONS. Every time when you receive a call and put it out of the pouch you answer or loose the call automatically. This is a bull****.
Just use the Diamond tweak tool thingy and I can see vast improvements already, you guys don't mess around huh? I want my diamond to perform, i have a bad habit of using my phone while driving, which is a bit hard to do on a touchscreen. I think my Diamond is almost there.
I really don't want to flash this puppy, kinda scared of ruin my warranty.

Just be cautious in whatever you do, and make sure you don't brick it... Whatever you do, as long as it's done correctly, can be reversed later on. Original SPL, original ROM, 100% warranty okay. But hey, if you're happy with the performance now, leave well enough alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Thanks for the heads up, I figured that if everyone is trying to get a diamond ROM why should I do anything, except for tweaking it of course.
I was surprised to see that the ROM I have on my Trinity isn't the same as the real thing. It works, and works well and that is all that matters.

Diamond ... To Buy or not to Buy :-)

Being a user of HTC touch that just died... :-( I am looking for my next Phone.
I have 24 hours to decide if I shall buy the Diamond or not. You are the best people to suggest as you are the current users...
I had a look at the diamond Pro but just too large and heavy for my needs
Your Suggestions will be highly apreciated. Also If you can recommend a good trusted online supplier in Europe that would be great too!!!
George the Greek
well if you liked Touch....you will definitely love Diamond (if u don't need hardware keyboard )
if u can afford it, get a Touch HD
If Touch Pro is too big for you, Touch HD is even bigger.
When it comes to size, you can't go worng with Touch Diamond. It is the size of a pager. I have bought a slim case for Diamond that I can wear on my belt. Loving it.
get a diamond
flash with a cooked rom...and your good to go
look here...just brought a item from them..ultra fast and great company
here is a start point for a diamond for you
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/16495.htm
if you take a diamond you MUST cook a newer rom, the original one could be a bit outdated & so... disappointing
Thanks but they seem to send only in UK .... I am currently in Malta.

bye,
davide
I bought the diamond 2 days ago...
If you want to install tools and go online with it... forget it! it's really slow!!
I prefer my old N81... much better!
And Windows Mobile... slow slow slow and windows-like (had to make 2 hard resets so far)
I'm thinking to give it bake and buy a N96...
not possible... with a light & recent rom you can reach the same performance as an iphone (I have a fellow with it)
for the navigation speed, if you go online only with umts, you have to increase some parameters in your registry, because they have a middle level values to work also with gprs connections
I saw the n96 the past weekend in a shop, I played a bit... very annoying, with a windows mobile even if it isn't perfect possibilities are undefined
Anymore feedback....??
Sounds like a 50 % Yes and 50% No so far... :-(
baisically, You do want to get a Diamond, as long as you dont ming playing with it to get it setup right.
If you havent had a windows mobile phone before, you wont notice the difference, its only people that have had a more baisic windows mobile phone before, with less feastures/graphics that say it is slow. because, comparatively it is.
Buy one, stick with standard for a while, then Flash a new ROM radio once you know your way around it and are comfortable with Hard SPL etc.
Thanks mugglesquop! I am pretty confident with upgrading Roms, SPLS etc ... you see being an owner of HTC touch had to do plenty of these upgrades
thanks once more.
WOuld you reccomend any decent europena online shop at good prices?
Handtec are pretty good, thats where i got mine.
I even managed to return it after it developed some problems...
these things do require work to get the best out of them but once that's done, boy do they shine . i have had mine for just over a month and am still on a stock ROM but i have tweaked it so much and can't stop touching it .
Best phone i ever had.
I bought htc and I sold it after a week, i thought that is slow etc etc, when i checked another pones didn't liked none of them so i decided to buy again HTC Diamond, when u get familiar with it after a month nobody will change it with any another phon just to remember you should not install to many applications because than will work slow like windows xp or similar.
regards
usually, as long as you install to Internal Storage (as opposed to memory) and you remember to properly shut programs (not minimise), you can have loads installed, i have! still runs very quick.
The device can do nearly anything you wish (as you are aware) and is nice and compact...you can even carry it in a shirt pocket
Of course you have to update your ROM (which you said you can and will do...) which is a must
However,...there is a cost of course to having such a light-weight device...power!!
If your prepared tocharge your device on a daily basis your good to go! You will also find the GPS frustrating...it works, but quite often you have put it in a circle of candles and pray for connections
All in all, I would recommend purchase.....however I'm looking forward to the "NEW" Diamond II when its dreamt up.....you know.... bug free
never had a problem with GPS...

Going to buy X1. Some questions....

Ok, so I had the choice between the iPhone and the X1, and I think the X1 would we better for me as I would be able to flash custom roms on it and fix mos t of the lag. I'm about to order the X1 off of ebay. I live in the US and there at&t doesn't carry the X1 AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong). Now, I have a bunch of questions regarding ROMs and other things.
Would I have to update my X1 before installing a custom ROM or would it come updated?
On average, how long would the battery last?
I heard it's supposed to have like 6 days standby time.
What are the risks of flashing a custom ROM?
I heard that Hard-SPL-ing it could "brick" your phone. I also heard that even after Hard-SPL, if you flash a custom ROM wrong or one that's messed up you could render your phone useless forever. If this is true, what are the precautions I should take before flashing my ROM (I plan to do it when I first get my phone, as I know it's laggy. I'm also running windows 7 so please tell me if I need to run XP or Vista for it to work)
Is there a way to fix a bricked phone?
What are some really good apps that enhance the experience of the X1? Such as maybe a volume enhancer? (as the sound is very low from what I know)
I already know of some, like Opera Mini, Touchflo 3d (comes with custom ROMs AFAIK) and Sbp mobile shell.
Even after flashing a custom ROM like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524043 , would it still be laggy when changing panels or while loading apps?
Does the case scratch easily? Is it necessary for me to buy a case if I don't want it to be all scratched up?
Do cab files that work on WM 6.1 also work on WM 6.5? Because I saw this: http://xperiancers.com/2009/04/22/how-to-use-your-xperia-x1-a-little-guide-to-windows-mobile/ , and I was wondering if the speed ups mentioned in that post work with WM 6.5?
If you guys think I'm making a bad decision by not buying the iPhone, please let me know what you think
Do you guys know if at&t offers the X1 so I can get a better deal? because I'm going to switch from T-Mobile to at&t very soon. (I live in the US)
Is there a way to make the phone landscape without a sliding the keyboard? Because AFAIK the Xperia lacks an accelerometer.?
I heard you can assign "shortcuts" or something to quickly switch from landscape to portrait. Need more info. on this.
Is it possible to Hard-SPL and flash a custom rom to ANY Xpeira? Like are there any that are "blocked" where you can't Hard-SPL it?
Thanks in advance.

You firmware version can not be verified until you verify it yourself DUH. What a dumb question. Your ROM IS YOUR VERSION. If you update the phone with the latest official ROM, and then flash a different ROM than you obviously lose the official ROM so update is pointless.
Phone lasts 3 days on standby now. It lasts 4-5 hours on usage.
No risks at all. But if you're not good at doing simple stuff such as flashing ROM don't get into it. PLEASE! It took me 24 hours NON STOP too help some clueless person flash his NIKE because he just kept doing it wrong and yet I gave him straightforward and in depth instructions. Other than that, flashing your from or updating your phone with an official ROM will delete all personal data.
If hard spl bricked your phone than you're obviously doing something wrong. If it bricked your phone, the developers wouldn't even release hard spl....
I won't suggest any Apps.
Yes, CAB files work on 6.5.
Don't get an iPhone. Don't get Xperia. Touch Pro2 is much better (especially they keyboard).
ATT does not offer. But you can buy the American version that works well on ATT's 3G.
Since when does a phone need an accelerometer to rotate? And yes you can use programs to rotate the screen (even tho accelerometer is not necessay....i guess you have absolutely no idea what an accelerometer is). But yes you can assign shortcuts or modify physical buttons. One program for example is AEBPlus.
All Xperia's can be hard spl'd.

No you can flash it with a custom rom whenever you like.

On average with a fair bit of wifi usage it'll last 3-4 days, less with constant voice usage.
I heard it's supposed to have like 6 days standby time.

I'm also running windows 7 so please tell me if I need to run XP or Vista for it to work)
To be honest i've flashed loads of phones and even if it bricks it temporarily you can always reflash it. Windows 7 makes no difference if you flash from the memory card.
Is there a way to fix a bricked phone?
I would guess if this happens you can always reflash the standard rom, however I have no experiance with this.
What are some really good apps that enhance the experience of the X1? Such as maybe a volume enhancer? (as the sound is very low from what I know)
I've got no problems with the volume but there are probably volume increasers out there.
The trick with reflashing is going for the best rom for you. I use the bare version of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509891. However with most roms you will loose the panels but honestly I dont think that its much of a sacrifice.
Does the case scratch easily? Is it necessary for me to buy a case if I don't want it to be all scratched up?
No in my experience the case is pretty tough but if you put it in the same pocket as your keys bits of the sony logo will come off. Having said that the build quality is miles better than any other phone with a similar spec.
All cabs i've installed have worked on 6.5 fine.
If you guys think I'm making a bad decision by not buying the iPhone, please let me know what you think
The iphone is a good bit of kit but it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want a replacement mp3 player and phone and you like itunes the the iphone is probably best for you. If you prefer a phone that you can customise use any software on or simply prefer not to be locked to apple the go for the X1. You must bare in mind though that unless you need to get a new phone now there are a load of new winmo phones about to come out with better specs.
Do you guys know if at&t offers the X1 so I can get a better deal? because I'm going to switch from T-Mobile to at&t very soon. (I live in the US)
Sorry mate im from the UK.
Is there a way to make the phone landscape without a sliding the keyboard? Because AFAIK the Xperia lacks an accelerometer.?
I heard you can assign "shortcuts" or something to quickly switch from landscape to portrait. Need more info. on this.
Im fairly sure that you can set a button to change from portrait to landscape, at least there are with my old hermes.
Is it possible to Hard-SPL and flash a custom rom to ANY Xpeira? Like are there any that are "blocked" where you can't Hard-SPL it?
As far as I know there is no way that a winmo phone can be "locked" to prevent it from being flashed.
Thanks in advance.

I've just remembered a good video guide to flash your rom is here if your still curious: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=497511
Thanks a lot for your input guys, it really helped. One last thing. When people say that Manila is "integrated" with WinMo, does that mean that Manila acts as a separate panel (like I've seen in many videos) or is there something I'm missing?
"Does the case scratch easily? Is it necessary for me to buy a case if I don't want it to be all scratched up?"
The brushed metal backside battery cover on my black Xperia started picking scratches and metal base started showing through the edges almost within a week of normal usage. A crack on the casing also developed within a month. After just a month of using my X1 carefully, it looks like a year old worn and torn down 50 cent phone. Stay away from X1... HTC Pro2 is a much better deal...
I would get the iphone. I'm seriously considering the iphone as the sony ericsson repair team are useless.

My two cents:
Flashing a ROM deletes all previous installs/updates/whatever.
Normal use - 1 day.
Heavy use - 4 hours.
Minimal to non-existent.
No.
RAFO lol.
Depends on the ROM, but it will never be perfectly smooth.
Just like any other phone.
Yes.
Depends on what you need. If you need a useless outdated device to show off infront of your friends - getbn the iCrap.
If you want a pocket computer - get the X1.
Also, Touch Pro 2 IS NOT better than the X1. I made a thread about in their forum. Search for it. It is called "Touch Pro 2 sucks. Here is why.". I would put a link, but I'm posting this from my X1 and I'm too lazy to do it lol.
I don't know.
Yes, you can map a button to do it.
Yes.

With newer smartphone models on the horizon, I don't know how wise a move it would be to buy an X1 now unless it's a really good deal. My X1 is holding up fine for my needs now, but it's not as polished UI wise as I would want it to be. Since I don't understand a thing about ROM cooking and the fact that I'm using Mac's keeps me on my stock ROM (though once updated on a Windows computer), but that's not something I'm necessarily unhappy about. Sure, I'm curious about all the ROM's out there and different UI's but I feel the phone is really stable now. I haven't had a crash for quite a while, which I feel is worth celebrating considering it's WinMo
This phone scratches WAY less than most smartphones, because it isn't made entirely of very cheap plastic...
HTC's other branded phones are pretty notorious for their cheap housing and they crack/scratch/break quite easily.
The three main UI overhauls are Manila (TF3D), SPB Mobile Shell and PointUI Home 2. There's a billion cabs you can skin different things with, so no point in gathering this information until after you have a ROM installed, since different ROMs come with different things installed already.
i have an X1 here in the states on AT&T and it works great. they support it fine.

well you answered your own problem right there. the X1 has literally unlimited UI options and fine tuning capabilities. i'll be the first to admit the stock UI leaves a lot to be desired, but anyone can get it to work/look exactly like what they want with a little bit of reading
Hmm, well I HAVE considered other smartphones. I've had a Nokia N73 with Symbian S60th edition for like 2 years now (great OS, just bored of it), so I don't really think I'd want another Symbian phone like the Nokia N97. I've also never used WinMo before, and I know it's not really that good (which is why there's touchflo and custom roms ) , but I also want to try something fresh and new. I've also considered the HTC Touch Pro 2, but At&t doesn't offer it and it's like 700 bucks unlocked when I could get the xperia for like 450 bucks unlocked (ebay). Other than that I really dont know what other phone I could consider buying.
Thanks for all these replies guys. I didn't really expect this many.

I'd be happy to read a noob-friendly tutorial for Mac users if you could direct me to one. But since I haven't seen either from the day of purchase, I'm keeping with my opinion for now.
Having the ability to mod/customize doesn't take away that the stock Winmo and SE UI is shoddy though. If it were good in the first place it wouldn't need/inspire customizing.
AT&T will offer the TP2, but yeah that phone is not cheap, even with subsidies + rebates...
I got my Xperia X1a used for $400 and works great. I hate how cheap the HTC branded phones feel...
Would I have to update my X1 before installing a custom ROM or would it come updated? You have to install Hard-SPL which is very easy.
On average, how long would the battery last?
I use mine pretty much all day (music, video, calls etc) and it lasts for about 24hrs until it needs a charge.
What are the risks of flashing a custom ROM?
It's very easy just read the tutorial thread.
What are some really good apps that enhance the experience of the X1? Such as maybe a volume enhancer? (as the sound is very low from what I know) The volume really isn't that bad, It's no 5800 although it gets the job done.
Does the case scratch easily? Is it necessary for me to buy a case if I don't want it to be all scratched up? If you treat your things with care you won't have any problem.
If you guys think I'm making a bad decision by not buying the iPhone, please let me know what you think I bought an X1 about a week ago and it's great although I suggest you try it out perhaps at the store or a friends to see if you like it.

Please refrain from calling someone a liar whoever you are. I am only saying what is a fact with my phone. I have been very very careful with its use and protection. Just beacuse you are lucky to not have a bad experience with X1 doesnot qualify you to suggest others are telling lies. I have been using high end mobile phones even before you were born and i know what i am talking about. Dont misguide users with your baseless judgements.
I just recently bought a x1 and it is quite laggy and is there a way to take off the notifications when you send a sms it is quite annoying when you are sending tons of texts a day
Anyone know whats the best rom to make the phone go faster?
sorry I am a noob don't flame me!

Hehehehe... you're inviting yourself to be flamed... A bit of search would have given you answers. Check out the sticky's related to tweaks. I would recommend installing Xperia Tweak or some other applications like Pocket Toolman and SKTools etc that can let you make changes to your system settings.

Quick question about 'OEM' product.

First of all Hello everyone, I'm Luke and I'm pretty new to the windows mobile scene.
I've wanted a windows mobile phone for a few years now however price tags were not so appealing to me, but now I've purchased my first windows phone and it should be arriving tomorrow or within the next few days. It also seems that I've bought one at a good time as I'm happy to see a lot of development going on for 6.1/6.5 which is awesome - I like playing around with gadgets more than actually using them.
But here is the catch, whilst I've posted this in the HTC TD2 section here, the phone I've bought isn't actually a TD2. At least not an official one. It's one of the Chinese models found on eBay. I don't want a moral debate going on here - it was a bargain and it's my first step into using a Windows phone which I'm looking forward to for a decent price. It looks like a TD2 and the seller has claimed it is 'OEM Produce' however I don't believe him really.
What I wanted to ask was how will I go about flashing, updating, installing ROM's and the such on this phone? Will it be more than enough to follow instructions for a standard TD2? I hope someone here who understands hardware device and such will be able to clear that up for me.
The phone is using the same processor as the original TD2, and has the same resolution etc. Not sure if it has the same amount of ROM/RAM however it's being shipped with WM 6.1 so it has enough I presume. Are there any other hardware differences that will effect the ROM's I can use? Can I even use the same ROM's you guys are using? I don't care about the lower quality camera and less important things like that.
Thanks for any advice (sorry it was a bit long winded)
Please scroll down to see my most recent post! Thanks!
Thats is a very tricky question you are asking here.
First of all, nothing is certain or guaranteed of what you might receive there. After all, the product you receive will be a counterfeit phone, a fake trying to mock a real TD2. And as with any fake products you get the same quality issues. How do you know for sure that it has the same processor?? Just because they write it there? The same can apply to the RAM, ROM, Display etc.! It is in my opinion HIGHLY unlikely that the phone you will receive, will have anything in common (technology-wise) with the real TD2. The TD2 combines a lot of recent technology like that hd screen, cam and ram. What you will find underneath of yours might be a mash-up of older HTC phones like the Diamond or even older..who knows!? You can continue this uncertainty with the Windows that phone is running...it will be some homecooked release that is made to work with the components the phone features. As they will be different to TD2 as we have clarified earlier, the ROMs available here will most certainly not work ideally with yours....and i would be highly surprised to see a forum that will be dedicated to a fake TD2 lolz. Anyways, I think you get my point...I dont really see why you would ship yourself a chinese mock-up to start with a Windows Mobile phone...I dont, really. There are so many nice cheap hq HTC phones out there that still support 6.5 to-date. I have been using a HTC Excalibur (S620/621/Dash) for like 4 years and kept buying the same phone since then because i LOVE it. The quality is superb and it runs Windows Mobile 6.5 like a charm. You can pickup a brandnew unlocked one for $100 at the bay. Just a week ago i decided to upgrade and bought a new TD2...not here yet but same as you i am very excited Im sorry that i drifted off into a moral debate by the way
If you really want to embark on trying to update your phone you will have to analyze the rom closely to see what phone's ROM it is actually running. This will help you to find the according forum in here.
Good luck
I concur with vivid22, The internals of your phone will certainly be different to those of the original HTC build and as such you may have many unforseen troubles if you do flash the rom.
But if you decide to proceed with a rom flash i would be very interested to hear of your results.
You may also be interested in using some benchmark software and comparing how your phone performs compared to ours, maybe you can discover if the CPU is indeed the correct performance. Its all quite interesting.
Oh and welcome to the forums
Thanks for your responses guys! Very informative.
While I'm not going to respond to the most obvious statements like it being a counterfeit and it sucking etc in much detail because of course you are right! but I knew this when I bought it. The price is the real difference here and I don't mind if I can't flash it but I too am interested if it will actually work .
I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive and yes you both are right it has a very high chance that it is using different internals and I expect this, however the seller seems to state its using very similar hardware.
I will be more than happy to mess around with it, I guess I will dump the ROM first if I can then try installing some 6.5 etc - no problem trying I guess. I must say I've seen some clones from merimobiles.com (or something) with TouchFlo and I think even WinMo 6.5 but then again obtaining those ROM's will be a quest in itself. Not sure if mine is being shipped with TouchFlo, it has it in the screen shots on the listening but that really counts for nothing .
I have seen a few threads on these devices and their flash capability but not any with any definitive results so hopefully I can get the ball rolling. When I actually receive my product I will be able to tell if it is actually using the same processor, etc.
I believe you will find that Hard SPL will not flash to unlock your device.
Many here have tried with the same knock-offs.
Unlock in which way do you mean?
Network unlock? (assuming not)
Maybe worth noting: The guy who is selling these flashes the phone with the version of WinMo (language-wise) that the buyer asks for before shipping out. Meaning they can be flashed, however with what ROM's and what method I've no idea. Might ask him?
Ok if I'm going to poke around this I have two questions to ask that will help me determine things about the phone:
(They may seem very dumb but I just need to clarify)
1. Is there a way to find out the Hard SPL version without installing a new one? Like the current one it has.
2. Is it possible to get into the Bootloader no matter what Hard SPL version you have?

No, SPL unlocks the OS, not the SIM.
Bootloader mode is how you determine your current SPL.
Okay. So I should be able to (hopefully) get into bootloader and find the SPL it currently has.
Well I guess thats it until I actually recieve the phone, cheers guys I'll post how I get on for the people who are interested.
It will be very interesting to hear about it. hope you get what you ordered?
God luck
Well, I'm back, for anyone who is interested!
Phone finally came, snow over here in the UK slowed it down haha!
So, the phone is very good for what I paid, and very nice.
I'd like to go about flashing it though, as it's currently running 6.1 with SPB Mobile Shell. SPB is very nice, but I really like the look of Touch Flo.
Now while cosmetically the phone looks pretty close to the TD2, it has a few things like no front camera (don't really care) and the zoom bar also seems to do absolutely nothing. The phone runs as smooth as it should. It has no g-sensor as far as I can tell, shame but doesn't really matter.
All of this sounds like it has no chance, I think it even has less RAM than it was meant to but I'm not sure... But here is why I am still curious about trying:
Windows Mobile is reporting that it is using the 528Mhz MSM7200A processor.
That is what I believe the real TD2 uses, correct me if I am wrong.
If this means it is using the same chipset or what-have you as the TD2, I don't know. This is why I need help.
Really, what I am asking, is what kind of things can I look at in the phone to tell what I could possibly flash it with?
Do you think the HardSPL utility you all use will work with it? Is there even any way to tell, or should I just try anyway? And could that break the phone beyond repair? Is there a way to find out the real specs of this phone, because it may have been modified so that it read that processor name?
What do you guys think. I'm willing to try all sorts, I just don't want to brick it with no way of getting it back that's why I am just asking for opinions before I do it anyway.
Thanks
You will brick your phone for sure if you try a rom for Diamond2, search this forum for chinese ROM (I saw it somewhere on another thread in Topaz section), but watch out that you will have a clean windows without customizations includind TF3D.
