i've read on here that you can get a free tomtom taster map that will give you one map of a region/city to try out, i can't seem to find them on the tomtom site, anyone have a link to were you can get a free map taster if it's true you can get one? is there an expiration before you have to register the map?
If I remeber correctly you download the map thru the tomtom program on your phone. Open the program and i think you should be able to download from there.
That is correct. You start TT Navigator on your pocketpc and then it will ask you to download a free map and it will then install the map so you can use it.
thanks, i didn't install the program yet, was looking for the map, from what i've read the program/map is the full version just only one area for the map? is that correct? do you get the turn by turn w/voice?
Install TT Navigator from your CD or download from somewhere (its the full version). As a gift TT lets you download one area of a map for free.
To get the whole maps, u have to purchase them or use google
thanks for your help.

I found another FREE app.
Nokia is giving away for FREE a GPS software that makes possible something that even Google Maps can't: off-line mapping with use of GPS. Online mapping is not a big deal because Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others offer it too, but with smart2go you can use GPS in combination with maps even when you are not connected to the Internet!
Here's the link to the review. From there, you can go to the site......
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7180.html
Tested this on the N95 today and it was great, installed it on my Kaiser and it works well
I think this is much better than google maps. Gps located my location very quickly. Navigation is smooth and accurate(I think navigation lasts 3 days, I think). Very Nice me think
Thank you very much. Although I have a navigation software these cards are often better for walkers. That's why I installed Google Maps. Now I don't have to stress my free data volume so far.
I just wanted to Bump this. This is software is very handy, and FREE, and I didn't want it to get lost. Guys, you really need to try it!!!
I am confused as to what to do. I downloaded the software. But how do I get the maps on the phone?
seems to work fine on my att tilt (although i haven't left the house yet ).

you use your Wifi connection to download maps of the area you will going to, then, your phone uses it's GPS with the maps d/l'ed.
So am I correct in saying that as you surf the map using wifi etc. it stores the data on your SD card and uses it when you need it. So lets say you live in Louisiana, you can surf the whole state while on wifi or a router etc.. and it will store the map for later use??? is this correct???
seems like it still needs a data connection?
if youre driving, how can it use wifi if you cant connect to an access point?
that must mean it cannot download the map?
1. I go to ... http://www.smart2go.com/en/download/
2. select "Via PC"
3. all i am seeing is bunch of NOKIA softwares
the question is ... which particular model should we download for HTC? I selected the E95 model and I notice the file extension is slightly different, is "File: nokia_maps_1_0_upgrade_ROM.sis" instead *.CAB
any advise? thanks in advance.
It said to download the "Generic" one, that's what I did.
I am just not clear on down loading the map data!
so is this better than TomTom????
EDIT: never mind
"...although you can't do navigation (route calculation) for FREE with this program (Nokia demands money for that), you can however use it as a FREE map with GPS support!"
I have read a little more, will try downloading the map app

It's right there. The first option on that list is "Generic: Windows Mobile 5 Phone Edition".
And they also say: "Is your device not listed? Please choose the generic version for any unlisted devices that use Windows Mobile".
ok, I there has to be away to download a complete map instead of surfing the states to get some mapping data?????
Also were doesit store all its data?? I will look in the SD card.
Yes you can download the mapping data to your SD Card.
Use the mapping tool provided on the website.
You need to edit the qf file using notepad to say 1.3 rather than 1.1 or you cant do it.
I am downloading it now, and hopefully it is more accurate than google maps! BTW, is there any other gps software that i can use with my tilt??
Thanks.
Crap, i downloaded the generic version and i did not install on my Tilt. Any help??!!
so this is the only software that lets you use GPS without being connected to the internet?
i have the t-zone plan. it's probably too slow to use google maps gps right? or how does it work.. does it download ALL the directions at once, so that i would have to wait only 1-2 minutes max for each set of directions? or does it obtain the information right before i have ot make a turn and such?

Weather working fine on TT7 for me
Where do you live? I'm in NJ.
Works in California.
works in Bloomington, IN...
So you guys just installed the program normally and it just worked?
doesn't work in montgomery, alabama
Weird! Wonder what it is!
Works in Cleveand Ohio
But doesn't 'region' mean US? For example, over seas DVD's have different region codes than US. Am I correct?
works fine all over MD

Anyone who had the issue of not getting TomTom Plus to work ever find a solution? As with the OP, TomTom Plus (traffic, weather, etc.) worked for me in TT6, but in TT7, I get that same message saying that the service is not supported in my region (yet). I'm based in Northern California and I'm currently using the USA map that I just bought from TomTom.
work in uk
I had the same issue and after some consternation and trial and error, found that when I deleted the entire TT6 app including xml's dats etc., before installing TT7 I got that error about it not being available... I reinstalled TT6, then installed TT7 then uninstalled the TT6 app only and left the folders alone, now I get weather, traffic (2-day trial) and buddies. Must have something to do with the tt6 files that were originally tied to my Tilt. Did notice however that the key is different for TT7 than TT6 and since I had to replace my Tilt in the past 6 months-TomTom only allows changing the key once in 6 months and tells me to contact support which I am leery of since TT7 isn't native to the Tilt. Not a programmer, so not sure but seems to me that the TT6 files had something to do with it.
I tried what Alemaker suggested and had everything working with TT6, but when i tried to copy the files to TT7, nothing worked. At first, TT7 recognized my username from TT6, but i had to go into "edit account info" to use the other Plus services, and i got the same old error message. And, of course, my username went back to "anonymous".
has anyone gotten any plus services to work with TT7 and the USA maps in the US? i'm starting to think TT6 and TT7 might use different servers. (BTW, i went to TomTom and they said traffic was still in beta in the US - so they gave me a 3 month trial.)
has anyone tried to update via wifi and see if it works?
Funny thing is that it worked for me one time and then when I switched roms it stopped working.
Works fine in Northern Virginia, Washington D.C and the rest of the metropolitan area.
Try upgrading the weather in the TT7 settings within the program...and connect to the TT7 services tab in the application before you try to run the weather...that should fix it. look for and Sign in to the "TT service" icon thats in the options tabs..not the TT website though..theres a tab for it in the prefrences/settings tab underneath the "navigate to" option it will be there somewhere. After your in the TT services it should ask you if you want the weather option as well. If you dont have a TT account youll need to make an account..but u must be connected to the net on your tilt when the TT7 software is running because without internet you wont be able to connect to the TT services and weather function. So to make a TT account email, go to the www.tomtom.com or wutever web page through your tilts browser, make yourself an account email and redo all the instructions up top plus hard reset after you login with your new account and sign in inside the TT7 services and weather services again..that should and will make your weather work. Repeat the steps once youve connected to the TT services throughh a internet connection within the TT7 app
Anyone in NJ that has TT7 and Plus Services working
Been slumming the web and it seems the TT7 and Plus Services not working seems to be concentrated in NJ/NY... Just curious.. anyone in this area that has Plus Services working with TT7?
Having found and read the threads I can on the subject, I want to install Tomtom 7 (tt7) on my Diamond (I purchased the phone whilst on a trip to HK and it didn't have it installed), and to hook it up to Tomtom Home on my pc to purchase maps over and above the taster maps.
I've loaded the application cab from a thread on the Kaiser forum (which most people seem to agree is not Warez), and downloaded TT home 2.3 from the tomtom website. Have got the free taster map, but now want to buy more maps. However, I don't seem to be able to get Home to talk to my device.
From reading the threads, it's suggested to move the application from "Intern Gegeugen" (where it installs), to the Program Files folder. However, doing this breaks all the shortcuts.
Can anyone either provide a cab for the application that installs to the right place, or give me some step by step pointers how to get it all working? Would really appreciate the help!
Oh - and should anyone from Tomtom chance upon this post, the sooner you get your website and Home explicitly working for TT7, the faster I'm sure people like me would actually be buying your products- seems you've done the hard part of actually developing the software, just not making it easy for people to buy it right now!
That's interesting about moving the install folder... I haven't tried that. What I did do though was to uninstall Home 2.3 as I encountered the same problem and install Home Navigator 1.5. From there, you can just purchase maps of your choice. You need to link the device to a 'GO' device as they are the only models using version 7 software.
Hope this helps

Place the contents of "Intern Gegeugen" into My Device/Program Files/Navigator on the Diamond. Connect via Activeynch and finf TomTom Navigator.exe in the above folder. Right click, choose create shortcut and paste that shortcut in My Device/Windows/Start Menu/Programs and rename it accordingly.
And after that you can connect with tomtom home 2.3 (for PDA). First you choose your memory location, get an error, go back and your device is connect.
I've just given that a go and moved the install onto the internal storage. It all still seems to work ok. One question though, other than free up the main memory are there any advantages/disadvantages to running the app from internal storage? (i.e. does it run slower from internal storage etc)
I find if you install TomTom 7 on the internal storage, TomTom home 2.3 comes up with an error, installing it the the internal memory TomTom home picks it up fine.
I have tried the above, but still cannot purchase any maps. when I Click on the maps i just get the message 'No Items Available'

same for me! tomtom home recognices my device but can't really communicate with it.
i use the maps i get with me touchcruise/xda orbit2, they are version 6.75.
connected with tomtom home 1, device can get connect. i used the maps from cdrom and could install them. afterwards i activated the map on my device using my product code card, no problem :-D
Only TT home 1.5 is compatible with Navigator.
What I did was upgrade my TT6 maps to the latest then using TT home transfered the maps to the device and installed TT 7 after. works well
I changed TT6 into TT7 and I could use the same maps. All is working fine.
One question:
TT7 does not get a fix, when phone is not on. I found it today, when I use Tomtom in a car about 10 minutes. I stopped and turned phone on, so Navigator 7 got the fix easily.
I have not agps on.
In Artemis I did not find this kind of symtom with Navigator 6.
i have also tomtom 6 with maps from my o2xda2. i've installed the maps from cd over tomtom home 1.5. it installed successfully. but in tomtom 7 on my diamond i can't still use the maps.. they aren't listed in manage maps?! what do i wtong?!
please help
i don't know, i just installed tt7, not 6, then connected it with tomtom 1.5.
put the cd in and i was capable to install the maps.
yeah... i did the same! all fine! but when i start tomtom on diamond i can't change the maps. i only see the demo-map. you can?
yes, i can. i even never installed the demo map. you know that you have to choose/change map in order to see the right one?
yes i know... but there who i can change the map i see only bern (demo-city-map)!!!
Not being a SatNav user I did this
I am not really a big user of SatNav as I read the signs on the road.
However, I am a lover of toys and have always kept a copy of tomtom nearby for fun.
I installed the XDA linked TT7.cab file (11.9mb) and directed it to Internal Storage.
Then I went online and created myself a tomtom account. I went through the maps purchase wizard stating my device was a GO 720 model.
I then purchased the 7.2 Great Britain and NI Map. £29.95 - even by my standards a bargain.
I then downloaded Home 2.3 and connected my Diamond as a disk system.
When the Diamond came up it challenged me to select the location of my product and I chose Internal Storage. It then promptly through up an error message.
I did a back and continued. When I went to MAPS etc it didn't find my map. So I clicked on the Update Pocket PC icon and there was my map.
It didn't take long to download and install (161 MB ish) and now I have a working TT7 with the 7.2 map.
I could also update the Pocket PC with free voices and POI's too from the TomTom website (although I have forgotten the steps just now).
The advantage is that I have a working, reliable, sexy, copy of Tomtom 7.
The negative is that I don't seem to be able to use MAP share. This is not a big deal for me (as I never actually use Sat Nav anyway!). It didn't seem to matter once I had bought the map what I set the device to be - PDA or GO 720.
I hope that this is useful as a legitimate way of getting Tomtom 7 onto your Diamonds...and all for £29.95.
I have done this twice - once for me to play and once for the missus to actually use.
Not a bit of Warez anywhere - for 30 quid why bother with Warez?
All the best,
Sam.
I tried the above method and HOME 2.3 just said that the map i purchased was not an available device for these maps so the checkbox was greyed out...any ideas...maybe they caught on?
need a response please!

No it's not a case of have they caught on. TomTom 7 the application on a PDA is not supported on TOMTOM Home 2.3. You need to use 1.5 . This is beacause at the moment only PNA devices are supported on 2.3
The Maps which you purchace to activate with your device to make the application work have not been released yet for PDA so you have to use backwardly compatible maps . 6.75 etc until you can purchase ver 7 maps
As for Warez the licenceing is with the maps only and not the application which is available to download from TomTom . If you was to load hacked Maps then this is WAREZ as the Licence is with the maps. You can only use your brought maps with one device and that is the device you purchaced it for. Hence you get the activation number from your device as it is device specific.
You cannot if you purchased maps already from a different device use them on another device . This is the License law and you need to purchase new maps every time you cahnge device . You can email TomTom support but they will tell you the same thing.
All maps are 30% cheaper at the moment, because they'll release the new version in the beginning of August.
The 30 price reduction is not for Navigator user as I found out last month.
As for only using the Maps for one device (true in a sense) though I managed to activate via TT home my maps twice on my Trintiy (as the Device ID changed once when I flashed an early ROM and activiate the same product code again for my Diamond - which is indicated on the TTcode website as three activations.
I have purchase new 6.75 maps for my Navigator 6 and know these will work on version 7 once on general release.
I am looking for a GPS app for my Diamond - WM6.1 that does certain things and do not know which forum to ask for help. I noticed one thread that had quite a bit of information concerning GPS apps. I've tried a few that use bitmap maps and I can't tell from them that you can actually create a route with them. Ideally I would like to use the built in GPS capabilities of the Diamond but I do have a BT GPS receiver also if I need to fall back on it. I do not know how to set up the internal GPS to use with apps. I have Microsoft Street Atlas which supposedly allows you to create routes and maps on the desktop and sync them to the phone but I often have trouble with my syncing and you have to be by your pc in order to create a route that you don't have the map for. I also can't get it to create a route on the phone even if I have the map installed.
I guess I just want a self-contained app that I can install and not need to sync maps (especially bitmap maps) and that I can enter an address (preferably also latitude-longitude addresses) and it will create the route and guide me as I go. Since I have tried several apps that were unsuccessful (for what I wanted them to do) I am a bit leary about spending lots of money just on the hope that it might be what I am looking for.
The Navigational software that was pre-installed (GPS Nav from Bell Canada) works well for most cases but I haven't figured out yet how to add stops along the route and I can't enter latitude and longitude - for non-city places that have no street address.
Any suggestions I can get would be great
Look for Garmin solutions for PPC, www.garmin.com.
Software is free, but you must buy maps.
http://www8.garmin.com/solutions/handset/smartphones.jsp
I had a look at the Garmin site and finally found where to download the app. One question I have is can you enter multiple stops along your route or just a start and stop point?
Also, it says the app is pre-loaded on an sd card. The diamond does not accept SD cards so can it be copied from a pc and transferred to the Diamond? Also it says there are no maps available for North America for the Mobile XT. Am I doing something wrong or is that true. If they are not available for North America then its useless for me.
Do you have a data plan?
I find google maps works well for me, but it downloads the maps as you are going, so if you are charged for data this is no good.
I also have tomtom, this allows you to input longitude and latitude coordinates however the software is not cheap.

Where can I download TT7 from these forums? Also, would I get to choose which map is free?
I don't have a data plan and wanted a GPS application that worked offline. I found a few but wasn't too pleased with them. The others are usually paid.
I found this app called "MapDroyd" its completely free and allows you to download maps of areas that you WANT (for example... I'm dloading 86 mb map of only California because thats pretty much the only one I need).
Try it out. I'll post more later once I've used it in action but it looks pretty nice.
I just made a most about iGo coming to Android. I guess I'll be using this till then.
EDIT: Just wanted to point out that this is a simple map app with GPS. It does not have navigation capabilities.
Thanks for the tip, it looks good. Is there a way of getting the maps from the PC rather than over the phone? I can't find them on the mapdroyd site, do you just go to the openmaps site for them? thanks.
No you download MapDroyd and ContentDroyd on your phone using the Market, and then you select the maps you want to download and it automatically downloads them to your SD card.
Yikes, that sounds like a lot of data to download! Still, I can do that on data plan before I go to where I have to be offline I guess. Thanks.
Sorry for the late bump. I got this app and I downloaded several maps with ContentDroyd. They appear to be ticked when I browse them... but the map view in Map Droyd is still an empty blue void. I can't find any settings to jiggle, can anybody point me in the right direction?
Can MapDroyd maps replace maps in my Garmin GPS?
Hey,
I was just wondering if I could replace the maps in my Garmin Nuvi 5000 with the MapDroyd maps?
Anyone try this yet????
