Tomtom on tilt (working)

I'm not taking credit for this, as it was other people on this board that showed me the right direction. I'm just making a post with a working version as I have yet to see one yet.
I have an AT&T tilt. This is with the ROM that comes with it. not cooked.
Make sure that you have deleted any other version of TomTom from your Tilt. Make sure you have deleted any old maps and map directories "\Storage Card\My Documents\"
1) Copy the cab over to your card
2) Run the cab
3) Copy your maps over to "\Storage Card\My Documents\". Mine were saved on my computer and called USA_and_Canada_v.675.1409.zip , make sure you are paying Tomtom because stealing is wrong.
4) Run TomTom
5) Go to Change Preferences|Show GPS status|Configure
6) Make sure the selected GPS receiver is "Built-in GPS receiver"
that's it. It should work from then on.

If you are using a non tilt rom, i'd try the cab install that comes with the htc. this one is for the tilt ROM

what version of tomtom is this?

Can you download the maps?

I don't mind paying for the activation code, I just want to able to download and pay whatever it costs to avtivate the service from TomTom.

Yes! Download and install Tomtom Home to your PC, then click on the link "buy the latest maps" It will show you all the maps available. Note: the price is in Euro and a single, cheapest map is 39.95 Euro. They have USA regional maps (New England_Mid Atlantics, Plains, etc) each cost 59.95 Euro. Hence, it is expensive to buy map online.

I just wanted to say thanks for helping me finally get tomtom on to my tilt. I had been trying for three days and couldnt get it to work. Finally got it to work. Dont know what I was doing wrong but it work. Just followed the instructions and it went like a charm. Maybe I was tired. Thanks a bunch

If you want to add the standard TomTom Voices to your Kaiser after installing this all you need to do is Download & install TomTomHOME from TomTom's website. It will allow you to download and install all of the standard voices.

yup Kyphur is right. also, if you download some free ones, you can just copy them to your \Storage Card\Voices directory.

The cab from page 1 on this thread works just perfectly on my Tilt flashed with the TyTN II ROM. As part of the installation, you can also download a free city map to play with. It automatically detects the Kaiser builtin GPS.
Very cool software.

I have the AT&T Tilt (Kaiser). When I select the GPS, it does not show the built in GPS. How do I get it to show the built in GPS. I have the TT MKii external one, but if I could use the built in one, it would be even better. Thanks!

I just set it up before seeing this thread and mine didnt say "internal GPS" but only one of the options was not for a bluetooth gps, so I choose that, and it asked me what com port to use, I said Com 4, and it worked fine. I am using AT&T Rom.
But, I would really like to clean up my Memory Card also, so now I gotta see if I can get all the tomtom files into a folder instead of the root of the memory card.

That worked! Thanks! Now I don't have to carry my external TT GPS around...

You are the man!!! I've been fooling with this #@%# thing off and on all day. I've been through countless threads and numerus cab files with all negative results.
After reading your post I tried that cab and it worked fantastic. I picked up 4 satellites sitting in the house and 7 when I went outdoors. I had already tried 6.01 with the US maps to no avail. I just installed your cab without uninstalling and everything worked great.

Best GPS Software for Kaiser?

Hey Folks -
I'm looking for the killer turn-by-turn software (with US Maps) - that I can digitally buy and install to my MicroSD. I've done a number of searches online looking for a product I can order and download (yes, I have the fever - IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION IS NECESSARY) and get working with.
POI's are very important to me as is speed and stability...
Can anyone chime in with their preference? Please also supply a URL where I can purchase your favorite application...

uh tomtom?

there's a million threads like this, just use a search.. u'll get ur answers instantly and won't have to wait.
Having said that, I tried Destinator, TomTom, Garmin XT, TeleNav and I still stayed with iGo, which I love above all others.
Some have cool features like traffic and all that.. some are just pain in the ass (destinator).. so if you can - try it all before u buy.

Of course - I know about the players (MIO, TOMTOM, etc...) but can't find a digital distributor for just the software to install on my kaiser (like pocketgear or handango)... do you have a link?

wow.. they're actually really close to me, like 15-20 miles from me..
Anyway.. they have excellent US maps, at least I'm very happy with CA map - very detailed, over 2 million POIs.

Uh, cheap? It's free and sucks since you're download as you drive so a lot of the time maps just time-out. Mio Maps is one of the best, and TomTom is probably the best as far as being user friendly and simple, but, TomTom is pretty slow compared to Mio.

How about iGuidance v.4?
I've been using it for a few months. It has text-to-speech. The only problem is, you might i need GPSgate as some of the WM6.1 here doesn't refresh the screen often enough.
I've used TomTom too, it was nice but doesn't have text-to-speech.

I've used TomTom and it was pretty good, user friendly... only thing I didn't like about it was the routing and as the screen is touched it'll take you to the menu.
I've switched to Garmin and found that the one which suits me well so far --- more detail on maps, nothing popping up while touching the map on the screen, and looks a lot simpler. Its navigation software is not as "realtime" as TomTom, but is probably the most simplest to setup, install, and use

I don't know of one of the majors that is. With bandwidth costs they rarely fancy giving you GBs of map to download. Just buy one on a disc.

does anyone know of a good free one which allows you to put your own maps eg a photo of an os map or jpeg in for calibrating for camping hiking walking about woods ect.

I have been using a combination of TomTom and Google Maps. I use Google Maps for most of my POI's since they are updated, contain phone numbers, and are just plain easier to use. The TomTom POI's aren't that fantastic I've noticed. But I will take the location I find in Google Maps and then use TomTom to navigate me there since navigation in Google Maps isn't really turn by turn and can't redirect you automatically if you miss a turn.
My only complaint with TomTom is that you need around 1GB of storage on your SD card so you need a large one (I'm holding out for those 32s!) and it looks ugly when installed on the card. Random files and folders everywhere and it has to be on the root of the card. I'm a neat freak when it comes to file layouts so it drives me crazy.

what about ms live search?
I used it a few times on my recent vacation, it worked very well. Same benefits and drawbacks as google maps, but I think I like it's interface better than google maps.

Live Search has an arguably better navigation setup that Google Maps. GM closes when it loses it's data connection so it's worthless between cities where cell coverage is weak. MS does a better job of caching the maps and will stay active, showing the route and turns even when the data connection is lost. if I could only have one of them for road trips, it would be MS Live Search.

I've had no problems using iGuidance other than on several occasions, it took about 3 minutes to open for some reason. I also use Live Search and Google for a quick find when I need it.

haha i do the same exact thing,.... now if somebody could make a program where with one click u can transfer the address from google maps to tomtom, i'd pay for it

co-pilot live 7 will interface directly with MS live search if they ever release the NO CHARGE upgrade. it has been announced and was scheduled for release this month
BTW I paid $199 when Co-pilot 7 was released last year but the current price is $99 i guess the <$100 competition is getting to them.
I use and like Co-pilot live USA. I can't speak for other maps. the software comes preloaded on 2 gig SD card but you also get it on DVD. I copied the SD folders to my 6 gig SD card and all worked fine. the activation key is stored on local file sysem. but if you have to do a hard reset you can reactivate on same phone with no hassel.

I have copilot as well, but at the $99 price point. The WM version is very nice. It comes with companion software for the desktop that just wont work on my vista laptop though.
Still for $150, you could buy a stand alone gps. But I thought about it and I always have this with me, so why buy another device? I didn't want to carry one.

Garmin Mobile XT multiple map sets on a 6 GB card

Hello! I purchased a 6 GB card for my AT&T Tilt as I wanted to keep both CNNANT 2K8 and CNEurNT v9 readily at hand (as well as music, etc.) I travel to Europe regularly and didn't want to have to juggle data on a 2 GB card. Anyway, I installed Mobile XT on the card successfully and I'm using the latest versions of MapInstall and MapSource on my laptop running Vista. I have the map files unlocked and can display them on my laptop. I have keys generated for both map sets and pasted into both the .UNL files in the Garmin folder on the card. It appears as one continuous 75-character key in each file. However...when I attempt to install both map sets to the card, although the install appears to go normally, I can display only one or the other map set. I can see through Windows Explorer that the available space on the card is down to what it would be with both map sets installed. I go to 'Manage My Data' in XT and all I can see is one of the map sets -- Europe or North America. I have tried every trick I can think of to get both sets to install properly but there's no difference. I do notice that when both have been installed, Mobile XT takes an inordinately long time to initialize on my Tilt. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the reply. All I'm attempting to do is combine both map sets on one card. If Garmin tech support was worth contacting, I would have done it. I'm not pirating and not condoning those who do. The "keys" in question are only to facilitate letting me combine what's already mine in a format useful to me. These issues have been sufficiently beaten to death on other threads so let's not belabor the issue.

changing maps with mortscript
I was asking myself too if it's possible to use two different maps the same time.
But i don't think it's possible with the pda version from Garmin. Correct me if I'm wrong....
My workaround is a little mortscript i made to choose which map i want to use....
If you're interested i can send it to you, you only have to change the values etc...

It's quite possible to have more than 1 map in a card, but it's required some key generate to make it work because of the Garmin's brilliant ideal (locked map to its specified tiny 1GB-2GB card.)

if you want to have multiple maps for different areas on one card, you should use "gmaptool" to combine them and load the resulting .img file on your device.
You have to have the maps unlocked BEFORE combining them, everything als wont work.
Sadly you can`t use mapsource with the combined file without buying the programm "img2mapsource" wich could do the job.
I dont really need mapsource though.
You can even combine to maps of the smae area, for example to get autorouting in a topo map.
To do so, you have to unlock both maps, set the map prioority with gmaptool to show the topo map over the auto.routing map and combine them afterwards.
The program is used in the command line. Read the readme for further instructions.

There is another way... still manual though.
I use MapSource to transfer only the maps I need to my Tilt. Unfortunately, as you all probably know by now, Garmin Mobile XT does not allow more than one map on the card simultaneously. If you try to do it from MapSource, the new map overwrites the old map.
So what I do is create mapsets in MapSource and save them for quick recall.
I created a mapset for all of North America using City Navigator 8 maps. Then I transferred that to my Tilt. Next I went onto my Tilt's SD card and renamed the mapset with a "CN-" prefix.
Now, I went back into MapSource and created a mapset for the NW states of the US using my Topographic 2008 maps. Then I transferred that to my Tilt. Next, I went onto my Tilt's SD card and renamed the mapset with a "Topo-" prefix.
Depending upon which mapset I want to use (on road or off road), I just remove the prefix and launch Garmin Mobile XT.
It's a manual process to switch maps, but it's minimal work and they're always on the card where ever I go. I'm sure you could do the same with EU maps or other maps.

I'm not sure if you're still looking for an answer on this or if you already figured out how to do this yet but I figured its worth a shot. I'm currently running Mobile XT on my Moto Q9h (WM6 device). The problem I was having was that if I loaded the detail maps for all of North America on to my 8gb sd card and then tried launching XT it would just hang on the splash screen at the beginning. After a bunch of reading and research I found a website that talked about loading different mapsets to XT (unfortunately I cant remember the website otherwise I'd give them the credit...). So what I ended up doing was breaking down my NA maps into 1 mapset for Canada and 1 for the US then I loaded both to my sd card and it worked like a charm. Here's what I did:
Install the first mapset to your device using Mapsource, so in your case I would imagine it would be the NA set but it can be either or. Once this is installed on your card, using active sync go to the Garmin folder on the storage card and rename the .img file from GMAPSUPP.img to GMAPSUP2.img. ** Notice that the name is still only 8 characters long **
Now that you've renamed that file, then go ahead and load the other mapset to ur device. Assuming that your maps are unlocked and good to go, you should see 2 img files on ur Garmin folder GMAPSUPP and GMAPSUP2. This should allow you to display both maps at the same time. This will work only if you copy two different maps, witch were unlocked with one and same map unlock code! If you have two different maps with two unlock codes - you should rename also GMAPSUP2.UNL file to have two working maps.

I tried this with North America and Europe maps (saved to 8Gb card) and it seems to work...I did verify that the maps are installed by going to Tools--> Manage my data ---> Maps, and it displays both sets plus the world-wide base map.
My question is how do I get it to display the second map...
I'm in the US, and I can zoom out and see the North America overall map, but I can't do see the Europe maps at all. I've selected both, and then tried just selecting Europe in the Mapsource menu, but I haven't been able to get the Europe map to display.
Any advice on what I'm missing?

Mobile xt is the "engine" to run the map. You have to pick North America map. Read more.

so basically city navigator is just the map...and mobile xt is the gps program that will find routes and current location n such. am i correct?

Actually, you do not need mapsource for this.All what you need is rename GMAPSUPP.img and GMAPSUPP.UNL to GMAPSUP2.img and GMAPSUP2.unl with active sync and you are good to go.

i've been successfully install 2 different map..and registered in mapset..but it views only the basemap...how can i show the other maps?

I already do what you said..but what comes on the display is only the base map...(GMAPBMAP.IMG)..and i can not see the others i've already loaded on my garmin xt

In your SD card you would have gmapbmap.img as your global base map. For GMXT you can also have gmapsupp.img and gmapprom.img with the corresponding gmapsupp.unl and gmapprom.unl files as necessary. This works for me. I tried gmapsup1.img gmapsup2.img that other boards said would work but my GMXT doesn't load this filename. However, mine can have the global base map plus 2 other maps simultaneously.

GPS app for ppc (specifically Diamond)

I am looking for a GPS app for my Diamond - WM6.1 that does certain things and do not know which forum to ask for help. I noticed one thread that had quite a bit of information concerning GPS apps. I've tried a few that use bitmap maps and I can't tell from them that you can actually create a route with them. Ideally I would like to use the built in GPS capabilities of the Diamond but I do have a BT GPS receiver also if I need to fall back on it. I do not know how to set up the internal GPS to use with apps. I have Microsoft Street Atlas which supposedly allows you to create routes and maps on the desktop and sync them to the phone but I often have trouble with my syncing and you have to be by your pc in order to create a route that you don't have the map for. I also can't get it to create a route on the phone even if I have the map installed.
I guess I just want a self-contained app that I can install and not need to sync maps (especially bitmap maps) and that I can enter an address (preferably also latitude-longitude addresses) and it will create the route and guide me as I go. Since I have tried several apps that were unsuccessful (for what I wanted them to do) I am a bit leary about spending lots of money just on the hope that it might be what I am looking for.
The Navigational software that was pre-installed (GPS Nav from Bell Canada) works well for most cases but I haven't figured out yet how to add stops along the route and I can't enter latitude and longitude - for non-city places that have no street address.
Any suggestions I can get would be great

I had a look at the Garmin site and finally found where to download the app. One question I have is can you enter multiple stops along your route or just a start and stop point?
Also, it says the app is pre-loaded on an sd card. The diamond does not accept SD cards so can it be copied from a pc and transferred to the Diamond? Also it says there are no maps available for North America for the Mobile XT. Am I doing something wrong or is that true. If they are not available for North America then its useless for me.

I find google maps works well for me, but it downloads the maps as you are going, so if you are charged for data this is no good.
I also have tomtom, this allows you to input longitude and latitude coordinates however the software is not cheap.

software is free, u can download TT7 from these forums. Its the map u have to pay for. u get 1 free map tho.
TomTom allows you to put in points along the route too.

I haven't but if you look around XDA you will find the cab file for TomTom7, and you can then purchase the maps from Tomtom. I can confirm that this does work, I was able to sync my tilt with TomTom home 2.6 and immediately got map corrections.

I want to be sure I have an official copy of TT7 which I can transfer my speed camera & traffic subscriptions and get regular updates - this would mean at the very least having an activation code.
I am happy to pay the going rate - and have repeatedly spoken to TomTom asking to do so, but they wouldn't previously sell them to me.
They are now checking whether the items on the internet are available legally (possibly imported) - in which case they will support the product. I am awaiting a response...

Given that info, you would be correct in going to route your going. Please post back when you have gotten a response back from them. I think that we would all be interested in what they say.

OK - update. I phoned TomTom support yeaterday and spoke to an advisor. She was confused about the TT7 versions available for purchase, as she was not aware TT7 was available to buy YET (only pre-installed on some devices - but not in UK). She thanked me for bringing it to their attention, and promised to get back to me on whether it was legal software and whether I should go ahead and buy.
As she promised, she then raised a Support Call which said they would get back to me.
I've checked again just now and the question has been deleted but I have had no notification whatsoever. Read into that what you will - but the websites are still selling TT7 and it hasn't been taken down....
My guess is they have found nothing illegal, but don't want to validate buying from those sites before they put it on sale themselves - but I may be wrong.
I have raised another question seeking clarification - as I don't want to waste £56 if I can avoid it.....

I also would love to upgrade to TOMTOM 7 and called support here in the US just now. They tell me that TT7 has been released in EROPE only and is expected in the state "soon" with no time frame given.
Until then TT6 is the latest and greatest for the US according to TomTom support.

screw tomtom, its all about iGO!!! and yes im in the US....updated POIs and 3d Maps...TomTom is a lackluster GPS in comparison(i've tried both)

OK, I've spoken to TomTom support again. They confirmed that TomTom navigator 7 is not available anywhere as a stand alone application (for download or on a memory card) and is not availbale in the UK at all.
They are aware a number of people have downloaded versions, but they cannot confirm maps will work, and will not support it (or offer refunds on maps).
Their legal dept. is chasing up the sites offerring it for sale illegally.
He advised me to purchase an alternative navigation system (i.e. NOT TomTom), but clearly could not give me a recommendation.
Any suggestions? What does iGo offer?
I need:-
- ability to install on a microSD card (so I can install alongside my music and other apps)
- Live Traffic updates via internet link
- Speed Cameras
- Map update facility (so it does not become obsolete)
- Works on Kaiser
I haven't found any application which can do this.

TomTom isn't as flashy, but iGO8 is just plain unstable. It won't run for me for more than 30 minutes without crashing, and it seems to use endless amounts of ram. I almost always find every background app gone when I exit iGO8 (or, it exits itself....)
I like iGO8 but it just doesn't cut it for real navigation for me, I don't want to be re-starting it in the middle of driving.

Latest from TomTom:-
I have just checked with my 2nd line department and have found out that some retailers are offering Nav 7 with maps on SD card.
One company that does have licensing for the software is Navteq. Please check that your PDA/Phone is compatible with it. I have also been advised that if you have any technical issue with the product, then to contact the point of sale, as they are installing the software onto the cards.

So maybe some websites ARE selling it legally? Anyone know which sites are supplied by Navteq? (Their website doesn't help...)

All the more reason you'd think TomTom would sell stuff while they can....

Looks encouraging if they are selling V7 through Distributors although a bit worrying that they don't appear to know that they are....

Now confirmed - TomTom has mailed me saying Handtec ARE licensed distributors of TomTom Navigator 7.
Order placed...

Thanks for posting. Please confirm once you installed it and if all was OK. On TT's official website, they still don't sell Nav7 with new maps.

can you use the software on a different memory card? I normally use a 4GB one and would like to continue using it jsut for the extra space..

Yes it's arrived and installed correctly - works with new TomTom Home 2.6.

Yes, I copied to my 16Gb card first and then installed - it works.
To be honest it was fiddly installing this way and I had to reboot the device a couple of times. I suspect this was because I was reluctant to remove TT6 before installing TT7 -this was because a) I wasn't entirely sure it would work, b) I didn't want to lose my existing TomTom subscriptions & c) I didn't want to lose my POIs.
As a result I renamed my old TT6 files / directories first, then copied everything from the TT7 disk onto my card.
At first when I booted the device it tried to load Navigon (!?) - I suspect because I had been trialling this recently and the cab file may still have been knocking around.
Then it booted straight into the old TT6 applications so I had to quit out and move the TT6 exe (rather than just renaming).
After all that I had to start the cab file manually, but it then worked.
Best of all this then kept my favourites and POIs.
I then connected to the PC and after it initially tried to connect via my old TTHome 1.5, I manually started TTHome 2.6 and it recognised it and updated the maps, Speed Cameras etc. It even transferred my voice subscriptions to the new version.
I now need to use it for a few days to check its all perfect before I delete the old TT6 files, but at first glance it seems fine.

What is the actual version of this TT7 since this seems to be an 'official' retail version and not the version that has been hacked out of the Diamond or IOLite?
