yeah.. don't know about accessing the wireless manager screen (there is probably some file in the windows directory that accesses it) but to assign the button, click start | settings | buttons. 'button 6' is the one you want to change.

mine only shows 5 buttons
Look at the stickied threads at the top of the forum. Find the "Tilt-specific" thread and scroll down to the "PPT remap" link. Look on page 10 of the thread and find the zip attachment "PPT-to-VSD" file. Install the cab.
That will set you up with button 6....and from there you can tinker with setting the button to do other things.

That works but I don't like the idea of installing a cab just to reassign a button. If the OP goes to the search page I posted and clicks on the first link, there are instructions for removing the PTT reg key and making it "button 6" as well as "button 6 hod", in the buttons settings. You can then map it to one program when you press it, and another when you hold.
n/m i just flashed my tilt with the HTC rom so it shows up as button 6

What? I'm given Button 1 through Button 5... I'm not even given the choice of Button 6 configuration on my new Tilt...

soft key applet
you can use a program called soft key applet, which is downloadable from the xda ftp site, not sure if you can simply turn these off, but you can assign different programs to them.
I use dcinobar, you can just click the .exe to enable / disable it. I have mine placed in the \windows\startup folder works perfectly.

nice post, def. gonna try this one out when I get the chance as I never use the on screen soft keys anyway,(plus I know I ain't the only one who can't stand the fact that the home screen plugin from HTC doesn't allow one to scroll down the today screen in landscape mode)and a little extra room is welcomed with open arms. I'm guessing you can still use the soft keys if you want to by pressing the hw buttons on the device right????
cheers
Heres the trick..
It LOOKS a lot better. It makes more of your image available to use.
But wither or not you use the buttons doesnt even matter, because when at the today screen, even if you press those buttons they still work. I use mine all the time, but I dont like the clutter, but it doesnt matter. I just remember what buttons do what, since they still work.
Im adding this to my newbie thread
Thanks!!
This gives the homescreen just a bit more room.
Another nice mod is to remove the iconset for the unlock/com man/etc located above this bar. I used the regedit method using total commander- simply delete the following from your registry:
\\HKLM\INIT\LAUNCH92
This is the key that launches the tray application at boot (To re-enable create the registry key above with the value TrayAp.exe)
Have fun!

Actually I found the tray icons very useful and actually added my own tray from batterstatus. One touch activation of any of the radio's and various programs makes using the tray very efficient. Plus you can access the tray without even touching the screen so its a win-win in my eyes.
Regarding Neptunes' first post at the top,
"(plus I know I ain't the only one who can't stand the fact that the home screen plugin from HTC doesn't allow one to scroll down the today screen in landscape mode)"
I have spent days looking for a fix/patch for this. Is not having the scroll feature in landscape mode the final answer on this one?
Thanks guys!

Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\HTC Home and change the type to 4.

Thanks, exactly what i need.
Is there an app that would allow me to switch between tasks without going through Task Manager from the Start screen?

HTC task manager
Is there a way to assign a button of my Tilt such that if I hold it down it will open up the task manager from any app that I am using so that I can switch to another app?
Start | Settings | Buttons - choose the button you want to change (probably Button 6??) and then select the Task Manager application from the drop list at the bottom

you won't, it's not an app that you can assign to a button. Not sure why poster told yo to do that, they obivously didn't try it first.
another solution is the Alt+Tab task switcher that's part of PocketPlus4. I assign it to the PTT button and use it just Alt+Tab on Windows.
Wisbar Advance puts icons for your open apps in the Taskbar up top and you can switch by tapping on them.

I did try it first, but I have DotFred's Task Manager installed, so it was listed. I know realise the OP meant the HTC Task Manager (the one in the top right of the Today screen?), which won't be listed......my bad
Your best bet is to go with one of the other suggestions, or consider VITO TaskSwitcher (see here).

Thanks for the suggestion. What I wanted is some simple way of assigning a button to a task manager which would allow me to jump between programs without going through the Start screen then pulling up Task Manager on the original ATT Tilt rom. I think there are a few suggestions that I will try out.
I just hate putting all this stuff on/off the Tilt. Ultimately stability is key since this is a phone.
Don't forget MortTasks, which you can also add to the menu in a Mortbutton & then have a whole set of shortcuts hanging on your single button press.

Thanks for posting it. I am now trying to figure out the easiest way to create a short cut so that I can assign it to a button.
edit:
found it
Easiest way (?) to create a shortcut to the AltTab program......
Copy the AltTab.exe to \Windows on your device.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the AltTab.exe program
Tap and hold the AltTab.exe and select Copy from the popup menu
Navigate to \Windows\Appbuttons
Tap and hold on a white space area and select Paste Shortcut from the popup menu.
Tap and hold on the "alttab" shortcut and select Rename from the popup menu
Rename it to "Alt-Tab Task Switch" - or something meaningful to you
Job done!!
Go back into Start | Settings | Buttons and re-do the assignment; you should now see "Alt-Tab Task Switch" listed in the available options.
Hope that helps,
Mark.

I followed your directions but I can't seem to get alt-tab to appear in the list for button assignment. Tried this process on an ATT Tilt running Schap's 4.30 rom. Is there another folder?
FYI... put the short cut into the \windows\Start Menu folder and it will show up in the buttons lists.
Anyone know how to remap the power button to long key press program that allows a handfull of options? Schaps has done this with his newest 4.1 rom but i want it on dutty's v1.1 rom i keep flashing back to. I have the long key press button but it needs to be assigned to the power button. Anyone know how? Thanks!
Bump for some input.
Um?
So 136 views and no replies? Does this mean theres no possible way to remap the power button on the side of our phones?

I always search before posting and yes i did read this thread u gave the link for before i started this thread. I already have the end key set and if u read my post and the link u provided u will see it does not answer my question. im again looking for the end key program schaps cooked into his newest 4.31 rom for the power button. the link u provided talks about the end key or red
phone symbol button. im looking for the program schaps uses when u hold down the power button which im sure u know is on the top right side of the tilt phone with a picture of a circle and a line through it all in red. the end key program schaps uses allows the user to hold down the power button like they would to power down their device but instead of the tacky looking yes or no window that pops up, a different end key screen pops up asking if u want to power down, soft reset, suspend screen, etc. this is a nice feature i am looking to add to the current rom i am using. if youve tried schaps 4.31 rom im sure youll know what im talking about. thanks!
He said (I think) he'd release it as a cab (along wtih this advanced config 2.0) at some point.. so if he hasn't announced yet I don't think it's out, unless you check around that rom thread of his, someone mgiht have made a cab for it but not put it out for download yet.

Well if u or anyone else comes across this cab file it would be much appreciated! i love his new advanced config. 2.0, very clean. i thought the power end key program schaps uses on his 4.31 rom was out, i didnt know it wasnt released yet. his advanced config 2.0 should be out soon cus dutty said hes gonna have itcooked into his new v4 rom coming out round tuesday! maybe this power end key program will be out then or better yet cooked into dutty's v4 rom? that would be perfect! until then, if anyone has a cab for this power button end key program schaps uses in his 4.31 rom please post the cab. thanks everyone!
The only way I know of is to use AE Button Plus. It will allow you to remap many things such as volume slider, jog wheel, power button, etc...
If you're interested in a beta I have a limited number.
Not totally sure what you mean when you say "long key press program that allows a handfull of options", but I will take a crack at it.
If you are referring to the EndKey application that allows you to turn on flight mode, switch to vibrate, etc... and you want to assign that app to a long press of the power button then do the following:
There should be a shortcut for EndKey application in your \windows\startmenu\programs folder. Copy that shortcut and rename it to "Long_Power.lnk", move the new shortcut into the \windows directory, then test. You may need to reboot if it doesn't work right away.
Here is where I found that info

I would be interested in trying out the beta. From what I've read on various sites, this program seems to be exactly what I am looking for to remap several buttons on my Tilt.
Another way...Take the shortcut you want to assign to the power button & rename it Short_Power.lnk (for standard push) or Long_Power.lnk (push & hold) & then moove the .lnk to the windows folder. It will work immediately.
any word of the cab being released yet?
well, doesn't seem to work in 6.5/ Vogue ("touch")

If you link to the program/package/cab you want to link up to power button I probobly can make a cab for you.
This may help.
To just wake up the device without pressing Power, Start > Settings > System > Key Lock, & select "Do not lock buttons."
You may now use any button to simply wake it up.
I have searched the forums long and wide for it and I cannot find it. Is it simly cooked into roms as an oem package or is there an actual cab we can install for those that are using prebuilt roms?

I actually think he wants "long press power key". That is the one that is cooked into numerous roms. If you search for long press end key, or HTC end key, you will find plenty of threads. Long press power key is a different story.
Edit: Ok I think I was wrong. Long press power key is by Schaps. He wants the long press end key mapped to the red end call button. If you install it normally, which is what you get 10000 threads on if you search, it installs it to the right soft key.

All you have to do for any of the long or short keys is change the .lnk shorcut name to Long_Power.lnk or Short_Power.lnk or Long_Send.lnk or Short_Send.lnk or Long_End.lnk or Short_End.lnk, etc. etc. etc.
If you rename or create a shortcut name as above & point it to the program you want to run & then place it in the \Windows directory it will work.
You don't need a cab, or any configuration tool.
I know something much better:
AE Button Plus http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php, you can give any button a long press function of even a double/triple click function.
You can use it for free.
I use the Internet buttons double click for toggling bluetooth, the Email buttons double click for toggling WiFi, the left softkeys press+hold for devicelock and the enter keys press+hold for AltTab.
You know you can do all of that without adding a few more mb's to your system & another startup app. AE Button works don't get me wrong, but it's not for me since I can accomplish everything it does already from the registry. (The keyboard driver contains all kinds of neat shortcuts you can use, you only have to disassemble it to see). It's great for a novice though.
There is another easy way to configure this. (No need to install HTC End Key)
Install Schaps Advanced Config.
Then go to Menu, Key Mapping and choose what you want for Long Press Send Key, End Key and Power Key.

Wow - I've been using Advanced Config for ages (consider it essential) but had no idea it handled key mapping. Good to know.
I just tried it on my problem though and it's a no-go. My problem is that HTC End Key is cooked into the ROM I'm using and neither remapping through Advanced Config nor manually adding a shortcut (in this case ArkSwitch.lnk renamed as Long_End.lnk) works - the stupid HTC End Key programme just pops its ugly head up instead offering me a handful of useless options I can't change.
Any ideas? I'm using a 6.5.x ROM so HTC Task Manager doesn't work and ArkSwitch doesn't always open when clicking the title bar, due to the notification drop down, and I need quick access to a task manager.
Btw I use my phone's GPS for work a lot (in landscape mode) so Long_Send is already mapped to Rotate Screen.
Can anybody help?
Hi guys,
For suspending power on my Topaz I use a little programm called MySuspend.
However, it started to make problems on my analog clock in my Co0kie Home Tab home screen. This clock seams to stop going when the device is suspended.
BTW, the nominal flip-clock goes as it should.
I marked also that when suspending (turning off screen) with the power button, it does not influence that analog clock, so....
could anybody help on how to assing the direct functionality ????
(I use Advanced Config to assign. The question is actually what is the actual .exe file, that is nominaly assigned to powef button).
Thanks in advance for any help.
I am not certain of the actual 'power off' function and what .exe initiates it, but if you install TD2 Tools (or whatever the latest version is called) you can set your softkey in HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila
Set HomeLSKText"="Windows\PowerOffWarning.exe" to initiate Boot manager Screen, as shown below.

Thanks Bruce for the hint,
but I just would like to click the left soft key and it should be done (suspended).
The choice of couple of options is a bit to many clicks to go.
Thanks anyway
Anybody knows the solution ???
One thing you can try...
I'm not certain if TD2 Tools replaces anything in regards to .exe's but if you can browse through your windows folder and look for some type of power???.exe (not sure what it would be called exactly) but it should start with 'power' and see if you can find the .exe that activates a power down.
That's how I found the .exe in my previous post, but mine may have been replaced....
Sorry, just to be clear, you want to power off device or just suspend?
Bruce,
I want just suspend the device, exactly as the power button does it
I may be wrong but.....
I don't think it can be done as the power button suspends via the baclight settings in the registry.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight]
"ACBrightness"=dword:0000000a
"ACTimeout"=dword:00000000
"ACTimeoutTemp"=dword:00000000

There is no .exe involved.
Well,

So if that is an exe-file for this action, then ......... ??

As I wrote before "I found in Windows folder poweroff.exe"
So hopefuly there might be some other option for suspending as the button, but where .......
Perhaps something is getting lost in translation here but....
You stated "I just found poweroff.exe, that makes the action that is done when you press and hold down the power button."
Does that mean when you click the poweroff.exe, your phone goes to suspend as it does when you hit the power button? Did you confirm this?

Sorry, I've been away for a while.
When I click power.exe, it asks "Do you really want to turn off your device?",
ie. it's as if I would press & hold the phisical power button.
So, if that function of the power button exists as an exe-file, I assume that a suspend-function also would, but I can not find anything like "suspend.exe".
Maybe the file has another name ??
