alt-tab - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Is there an app that would allow me to switch between tasks without going through Task Manager from the Start screen?
I tried installing Duttythroy's task 2.x and my AT&T Tilt complained about insufficient permission.
TIA

here you go!
its my favorite app

htc task manager

AE button plus has this feature.

HTC task manager
Is there a way to assign a button of my Tilt such that if I hold it down it will open up the task manager from any app that I am using so that I can switch to another app?

Start | Settings | Buttons - choose the button you want to change (probably Button 6??) and then select the Task Manager application from the drop list at the bottom

Very strange. I don't see the "Task Manager" as one of applications that I can assign any button to.

you won't, it's not an app that you can assign to a button. Not sure why poster told yo to do that, they obivously didn't try it first.
another solution is the Alt+Tab task switcher that's part of PocketPlus4. I assign it to the PTT button and use it just Alt+Tab on Windows.

Wisbar Advance puts icons for your open apps in the Taskbar up top and you can switch by tapping on them.

I did try it first, but I have DotFred's Task Manager installed, so it was listed. I know realise the OP meant the HTC Task Manager (the one in the top right of the Today screen?), which won't be listed......my bad
Your best bet is to go with one of the other suggestions, or consider VITO TaskSwitcher (see here).
Hope you find one that works for you

Thanks for the suggestion. What I wanted is some simple way of assigning a button to a task manager which would allow me to jump between programs without going through the Start screen then pulling up Task Manager on the original ATT Tilt rom. I think there are a few suggestions that I will try out.
I just hate putting all this stuff on/off the Tilt. Ultimately stability is key since this is a phone.

Don't forget MortTasks, which you can also add to the menu in a Mortbutton & then have a whole set of shortcuts hanging on your single button press.

There is a programm - called "alttab.exe" jsut search. i haven´t it ehre at the moment!!

Well remembered @papamopps!! That was originally suggested for Touch users who are a little light on hardware buttons The relevant post in the original thread can be found here - saves you looking for it

Thanks for posting it. I am now trying to figure out the easiest way to create a short cut so that I can assign it to a button.
edit:
found it

Easiest way (?) to create a shortcut to the AltTab program......
Copy the AltTab.exe to \Windows on your device.
Open File Explorer and navigate to the AltTab.exe program
Tap and hold the AltTab.exe and select Copy from the popup menu
Navigate to \Windows\Appbuttons
Tap and hold on a white space area and select Paste Shortcut from the popup menu.
Tap and hold on the "alttab" shortcut and select Rename from the popup menu
Rename it to "Alt-Tab Task Switch" - or something meaningful to you
Job done!!
Go back into Start | Settings | Buttons and re-do the assignment; you should now see "Alt-Tab Task Switch" listed in the available options.
Hope that helps,
Mark.

I followed your directions but I can't seem to get alt-tab to appear in the list for button assignment. Tried this process on an ATT Tilt running Schap's 4.30 rom. Is there another folder?

FYI... put the short cut into the \windows\Start Menu folder and it will show up in the buttons lists.

yeah.. don't know about accessing the wireless manager screen (there is probably some file in the windows directory that accesses it) but to assign the button, click start | settings | buttons. 'button 6' is the one you want to change.

mine only shows 5 buttons
Look at the stickied threads at the top of the forum. Find the "Tilt-specific" thread and scroll down to the "PPT remap" link. Look on page 10 of the thread and find the zip attachment "PPT-to-VSD" file. Install the cab.
That will set you up with button 6....and from there you can tinker with setting the button to do other things.

That works but I don't like the idea of installing a cab just to reassign a button. If the OP goes to the search page I posted and clicks on the first link, there are instructions for removing the PTT reg key and making it "button 6" as well as "button 6 hod", in the buttons settings. You can then map it to one program when you press it, and another when you hold.
n/m i just flashed my tilt with the HTC rom so it shows up as button 6

adding the comm manager to the today screen

i have a quick question:
i recently installed the htc home 6 button screen, and the htc home customizer
on the program launcher window there originally was an icon that takes me to the comm manager/wireless manager but i removed in an effort to re-arrange the buttons. but now i cant find it in the list of apps to add.
would it be possible for someone to direct me on how to get it back? thanks.
using the att stock rom

When you remove an icon from the launcher, there should be an empty space with a circle with a cross in it. Pressing that, should bring up thelist of apps you're talking about. On my device, it is just a few scrolling lines down.
Have you tried just typing "Comm Manager" in the top bar and press select?
unfortunately no luck on the typing in and hitting select. it just goes to the closest match in my case "contacts"
It was originally one of the first six or so items in the selection menu, if its not there i dont know where it would be.
I want the same thing, to add the Comm Manager to one of the launcher buttons, rather than trying to tap the connection icon at the top of the screen.
i use pocket toolman 2 which places a icon in the system tray with a host of other icons you can select. its quick, easy, and free... good app
tvos
I am not 100% sure which one but either Schaps advanced config or KaiserTweak one of those two things have option to enable wireless thingy on today screen. It shows your current wifi and bluetooth connections and clicking takes you to connection manager. I would first try KaiserTweak.

Worked out how to do it earlier.
Browse to the windows folder and make sure you've got all files visible.
Look for the executable CommManager.exe, right click on it, select copy.
Browse to windows\Start Menu\Programs\Tools right click, select paste shortcut.
Right click and rename the new short cut from, "Shortcut to CommManager.exe" to CommManager
Then it will be visible in the list of applications you can add to your shortcut buttons on the HTC homescreen. You can use the same method for any other applications you want on the launcher if they're not available automatically.
(I pasted the shortcut where I thought it most appropriate on the start menu).
thanks 6thElement. that shortcut worked.
thanks TimeSaver. i used KaiserTweak to enable wireless on the today screen initially.
This trick did not work for me. I have the Dutty WM6.1 Diamond ROM.
I need to put the Connection Manager on the Today screen, so that it can show me what am I connected to, but it does not show up in the Today item list.
I created a Registry key for iy in HKLM\Softwate\Microsoft\Today\Items and it showed up in the list, but still does not work, brobably because I am linking to the wrong DLL.
May someone, who has the CommManaget on their Today screen see what are the correct Registry entries in HKLM\Softwate\Microsoft\Today\Items for the Comm Manager and post here?
never mind my previous post - I found that what I was looking for was called "wireless" and can be added through the Kaiser tweak....

Yeah but that'll be a shortcut to the "Word Mobile program" not the file/document and I've got loads of word files on my device.
make a shortcut of the file and drop it in the progams folder under windows>start menu>programs. It will then appear in the list of programs to add to HTC home plugin.

OK, here's the solution:
1. Open File Explorer
2. Press and hold your stylus over the word document until a pop-up menu appears
3. Tap "Copy"
4. In File Explorer, go to Windows > Start Menu.
5. Now, tap "Menu > Edit > Paste as Shortcut"
Now, your word doument will appear when you click the + sign in HTC Home
hope this helps
Thanks!
I've done it!!!
adding programs to launcher - not bringing the program
I am trying to add program by hitting the + sign in launcher. It is bringing the programs. after I select a program - launcher is not adding it to the launcher. I can remove the existing programs. I have added 4 programs long time back. If I hit remove they are going away from launcher. But - programs are not getting added.
Any help? Thanks.

Is there a way to have Task Manager in in the Start Menu or on the Today Screen?

It's hard to hit that little Task Manager icon in the top right corner without using the stylus. It's definitely not finger friendly. I wish there was a way to make the Task Manager more accessible. I like being able to kill anything that is running.
That would depent on the ROM you are running.
Quickmenu is the answer to your need.
I am running a the stock AT&T Rom minus bloat
Thanks for the reply
Or rather than installing more software you could map Taskmanager to a hardware button, Start\Settings\buttons.
Oh and in the start menu is easy Start\Settings\Menu
As i imagine your asking for ease of use.
Another cool bit of software is AEButton do a google as you can map up to 4 things for every hardware button makes the phone so user friendly
Task Manager isn't an option
I tried that first...it doesn't show up as an option in the start menu or today screen. Stock AT&T Rom

Sorry to do what i said you will need to use this taskmanager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2481033&postcount=81 it's just an exe place a where you want and make shortcut to Windows\startmenu
What I use is HButton by Ondrej Pavlicek, together with a newer version of Task Manager (usually included in the M2D cabs). If you let HButton handle the "ok" button presses, it will show the Task Manager popup at the upper right corner when you are in the Today screen. The newer Task Manager allows scrolling through the tasks, and if you press the right button in the directional pad, it will close the selected task. Very convenient for me.

HTC Task Manager or alternative?? What are you using?

Hi, i'm deciding what to do with my task manager. (on stock WM6.1 HTC H3G Aus Rom)
At present im simply using the HTC Task Manager 1.51 (build 33547) but am aware that there is 2.1 around.
Currently i have to toggle back to the today screen to switch applications and i have it set to click X to close the application. (i dont know whether or not apps use more resources if they are left open and not set to run in the background, any ideas?)
I want to know what others are using or their thoughts/experiences on these other Task managers. gleaned from Vibranze post here

HTC seems to improve ONLY the look and feel of their task manager from version to version so upgrading to a new version of HTC task manager will give you a different, possibly improved, look and feel. also, if you intend to use manila (2d or 3d), you'll need to use a newer version of HTC task manager.
finally, search for "Task Facade" developed right here on xda by gps-lover. its an EXCELLENT task manager that i suggest you map to the PTT button...makes "visual" task switching a breeze!
TaskFascade looks interesting. Does it disable the HTC Taskmanager?
I use WK Task and swear by it. It creates a PC type program manager and launcher on your phone. Has many more features and is very customizable.

nope! thats the beauty of it...you get to keep HTC's task manager (with its tap "x" to kill or tap and hold "x" to kill functionality as well as its presence in the home screen) while task facade can be invoked just by pressing the hot key you've assigned to it (i use the short press of the PTT button)
not 100% sure but i think task facade can work with ANY task manager that sits in the home screen (such task managers usually take over the "x" button functionality)
I use QuickMenu+DotFred's TaskMgr.exe, check this post for the way to associate them.
From QuickMenu, you got a task switcher, communication manager, commandline utility, RAM releaser, a lot of useful shortcuts and a real time indicator of battery + available RAM. And it is a very lite tool uses around 130kb RAM on running.
As to DotFred's Taskmanager:
Noonski said:
A lot of long time member and cooks have DotFred's Taskamanager in the toolkit.
Some Taskmanagers do not show ALL running programs.
Dot Fred's does more, shows Processes that can be enalbed and disabled at Start or stop them actively. Has a registry editor, Notification editor, can parse Provisioning xml files and even register DLL files. It's a Tweakers dream.

I also use VJOkbutt, I set the function of 'X' button to 'short press to minimize & long press to close'. I use HButton to map the Ok button work in this way: just press = minimize (the ok/close function in hbutton actually = short press 'X'), press & hold half second = close (VJOkButt), hold another half second = end others (brought by QuickMenu), another more half second = end all (from QM), and another half second = soft reset (by QM or TaskMgr), and then the last function = Today (by QM or HButton).
To switch tasks, just using QM.
