Bloatware Defined - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I just got my Tilt and have been carefully searching and planning my hacs. I'm actually thinking I may just go with some of the HTC hacks versus a new rom but still haven't decided. My question is whether someone could define what bloatware programs are loaded in after a hard reset and the "Customizing device" notification comes up and begins unloading ATTs cabs. The only other post I found refering to them says try the phone without them and see if it's ok, what are they? Basically I'm not worried about their music downloads, etc. I just don't want to download something they install specifically to help with the edge of Hisgh speed services. Thanks.

None of the shareware games/apps get installed as well as default ATT apps/settings. You can always configure the internet and other settings using one of the many cab files floating around here.

As far as core functionality, it's all there if you do the bloatware-removal trick, so you don't have to worry about any extra programs for the high speed connection etc. I did it with mine, after trying the HTC ROM on my Tilt, and to be honest I like the debloated Tilt rom better than the HTC rom. But yeah, the bloatware is most of the demo games in the Games folder, the pay-per-month GPS option (which is apparently decent, but there are free and other alternatives out there that work fine) and just all of the AT&T goofiness. I forget what else was involved with the bloatware, cause it only lasted an hour or so on mine before I was reflashing.

Sounds great, thanks.

I posted all of the programs you get with the standard AT&T ROM before and after bypassing the startup customizations. It is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335335&page=4
I'll see about adding this to the WIKI too.

Actually the at&t Tilt Roms have at&t MediaNet & ISP APN connection profiles built in even without the "Customization" program running.

My unlocked TyTN II had those setup once the AT&T SIM card was placed in it.

new I-mate SP5 ROM on a new 8125?

I just came across this post, and I'm very new at this...
Can I upgrade my Cingular 8125 (fresh out of the box, but unlocked with lokiwiz02b) with this ROM?
I'm a canadian using Rogers service.

I wouldn't put a ROM designed for a Tornado SmartPhone on my Wizard...but that's just me. ;-)
What is it you'd like to accomplish?
oops
Holy ****, I just saw that... sorry, I'm really new at this...
Anyway, I have all the Wizard files from the xda ftp... I want to know what the latest and greatest ROM to use on my new 8125.
Something that has the push email support? Maybe something with updates similar to the one that the tornado got today? They can now send files by bluetooth from the file explorer, this is **** I was doing on my treo 650 a year ago!
By date alone, K-JAM_WWE_216901_2169101_020710_ship_ExtRom seems to be the newest, should I use that one?
Now, i've superCID unlocked my phone, AND regularly unlocked it, is that all I need to switch to a new ROM?
Can someone point me to a post about backing up all the apps/customizations I've made to my stock setup?
Sorry, I swear I'm reading like crazy, but I could use a couple hints..
Thanks alot.

I must say you're quite brave for wanting to jump in without knowing a whole lot. But that's OK, I was where you are in the not too distant past.
A couple things - at this point it is impossible to get back to a totally stock version after you upgrade unless you have access to another stock 8125 or can get a raw ROM dump from someone to flash using a miniSD card. That said, you can quite easily get it back to a state that would look stock enough to allow you to return/exchange your device should you have any hardware problems.
If you've CID unlocked, you're ready to go. All you need to do is run the Imate or Qtek upgrade executable found on the xda ftp.
The Imate and Qtek ROMs are EXACTLY the same from an OS and radio perspective. The only difference is the customizations. In both cases you can skip the customization by doing a soft rest (stylus-in-the-hole) when the device gets to the screen alignment stuff after flashing.
When your device comes back from the soft reset, it will be a bone bare install of WM5. You will want to run a few cab files from the stock Cingular extended ROM, which is available in a zip file on the ftp. You can install every cab EXCEPT a file called gprsstall. It will kill your wifi. Every other cab is fine and will make your device look like a stock 8125. You can skip the 'good email' and 'get email' cabs too - they are for goodlink and express mail...don't know if you use those..
Anyway, take a deep breath and do it like this:
-plug in and establish activesync
-run either the Imate or Qtek installer
-when done, the device will restart and prompt you to align the screen..hit the reset button at this point and the device will reboot
-when the device comes back up, establish activesync
-explore your device using activesync and open or create a folder to put some files in
-copy the cabs you want to install from the cingular extended rom to the folder you have open on your device
-use file explorer on the device to select each cab file..it will install
-restart your device
-Enjoy.
Oh, both ROMs have Direct Push, so as long as your Exchange account has SP2 installed and push active, it will work quite nicely. Neither ROM has the ability to send files via bluetooth that I can find.
As for backing up your current customizations and stuff, what is it you want to try to save?
ok, I'm learning..
Wow, thanks for the helpful post, I hope to really get into this and contribute back to the forums.
Are the newer iMate and Qtek roms actually a newer version of WM5? I keep reading about this "MS Messaging & Security" upgrade that was supposed to have something to do with push email... is that included?
Aside from push email, what are the other significant improvements?
For the backup, I thought I read somewhere about backing up your current config on an miniSD card (i have 512mb), like the ROM and the apps etc, can that be done?
Any intermediary steps required to get push email going? I couldn't even find anything about exchange servers in the stock ROM, you can only add a POP3 or IMAP4 email account. Is it just a matter of adding a "new mail account" on this new ROM and point it at your exchange server?
Oh and finally, these "customizations" you said I can skip on the new ROMS, are those worth doing? Or do they just program in useless things?
EDIT
Hmm, ok, I was just looking at the Extended ROMS folder, duh, so these extended roms are bunches of little cabs that add customizations to a stock WM5? So looking in the ROMS folders... there's lots of files in each one. iMate for example has a WWE_216901_2169101...zip and a WWE_1010903_106...exe, what do the numbers signify, and which one should I be using?
Oh, and I could swear I saw some mention of Resco Explorer being in one of these extended roms, or somewhere on the FTP, is it?
I would strongly advise against doing this upgrade as it will re-simlock your phone back to Cingular and you won't be able to use it with Rogers. Further, lokiwiz has not been updated to support this new rom yet.
I know this is for a fact with the iMate rom, but I haven't seen anything conclusive about the Qtek rom. Noone here seems to know.
I'm in the same boat, I'm on Rogers with a 8125.
good advice
Thanks for the heads up. I'd like to use push email, I have the reins of our Exchange 2003 sp2 server here, so I can change any settings to make this happen. How do you even setup a non-push exchange server on the base cingular 8125 rom?
As a Canadian, have you done anything specific to your device to make things suitable for here? I know I installed GPRS monitor right away since our Rogers overlords don't have unlimited data plans (unless you count 100mb for an arm or leg every month), and I'm hovering at 7mb a month for $40... Damn I want unlimited...

As far as I know, the only way to set up a non-Exchange server is via wireless Active Sync or via IMAP. I haven't done anything provider specific to my 8125 as I don't use EDGE for the reasons you mentioned, just WiFi as it's available both at work and at home.
I'm really dying to install the Qtek rom as by all accounts these roms are infinitely better and faster than the stock Cingular rom. But I'm afraid it will lock my 8125.
Alright, thanks for the advice. Let me know once you do flash your device, and I'll do the same. I suppose we're just waiting for lokiwiz to be updated?
So far I really like the device, I just installed wifitunes and am streaming music from shared itunes libraries at work, and it's flawless!
There's a great post in the Wizard forum that details how to create a miniSD backup of your stock rom. The above poster is correct in that this is the only way to fully return your device to its stock state. The process is simple and you are only out the price of a 128mb miniSD.
Do this backup then upgrade with impunity! Let us know if its still SIM unlocked too. Remember that if it isn't, a 40 second restore will return your device to its original condition. This will work even if the updater fails and "bricks" your wizard. However, I am not sure if the restore process restores the original bootloader, so the "HTC" splash screen might not be removed. I have tried the restore, but not with a Qtek upgraded device.

Media Mall on non AT&T ROM?

I just upgraded my Tilt to Dutty's wm6.1, and I was wondering if there is something that I can do to make it so I can purchase things from MEdia Mall from AT&T. There are a couple of things that I need to get from there, and now it won't let me...says "we're sorry, your device is not supported for purchases on the MEdia Mall".
I know on Motorola phones you can add the Cingular certs to a folder (at least in the older p2k phones), which re-enables access to purchasing. Is there something like this that we can do to Tilts with an upgrade ROM? A cab we can install or a registry edit? I'm assuming we just need to do something that AT&T sees it as a Tilt and not an unknown phone.
I searched, but didn't see anything on this subject.
i've been looking for the same thing. I'll see if i could point you in the right direction. I remember reading something a while back about RestoreProxy and Disable Proxy.. maybe you want to restore the proxy to get it to work. Do a search in google because the search feature in this forum never find anything for some reason. Google. Restore Proxy Kaiser in google you should find someting
Well, you have to go through the proxy to even connect to the MediaNet homepage.
My sig! Look at it .
There is also an option in KaiserTweak to change how your device identifies itself to websites. Try changing the setting to AT&T Tilt. Combine that with the AT&T hidden proxy, and you should be good to go.

Problem with new AT&T Tilt ROM 1.62.502.0

I just upgraded the ROM and after upgrade, I notice that the few websites (www.wf.com and beta.m.yahoo.com ) which previously used to work with 1.57.502.2 ROM, does not work anymore. When I try the first one, I get "Browser not Supported" and when I try the website I get "HTC Pilgrim not supported". Anybody else has this problem? Any clues? This problem I reported with these 2 websites occurs with both IE and Opera Mobile browsers. First I thought it was limited to IE, but verified Opera as well which has same problem. So, I am sure it has to do with this new ROM upgrade which changed some of the registry settings or device identifier. Anybody any clues ?
There are several ways to fix this problem, the easiest being,
use KaiserTweak that is stickied at the top of this forum, and change PIE User Agent CustomBase to HTC-8900(AT&T Tilt).
Or you can use a registry editor to do the same thing.
I prefer KaiserTweak, it's easier and lots of stuff you can tweak.
Alemaker
KaiserTweak worked for me. For some reason the 1.62 ROM I downloaded had defaulted to the stock TyTn II PIE Agent. I switched it to HTC-8900, soft reset, and bammo, back in business. From what i remember, the old rom was defaulted to HTC-8900 when i opened KaiserTweak the first time.
This problem still continues with Opera Mobile
Great, Thanks!! KaiserTweak help me fix the problem with IE.
But it still same issues visiting these websites from Opera Mobile, any other magic here?
try un-installing and re-installing Opera, and make sure to get rid of all it's folders on your phone before re-installing.
Still not working
I uninstalled Opera, then made sure that I removed all the folders/files it had created, then did a soft reset and then re-installed opera, still no luck. Continue to have issues with these 2 websites. Any other ideas ?
i just recently updated to the 1.62.xxxx rom... i dont have problems with opera though but i got these issues on my fone.. 1st off, when i take a picture, i cannot load the file.. i cant see what i took. it gives me an error saying that the file cannot be opened(this happens when the default storage is the storage card.) also, when i save something to the storage card, i get another error that says, a device attached to the system is not functioning. i already tried doing a hard reset and i still get errors... any clues??? thanks! im thnking of going bck to the old ATT rom... (sorry for any typos.. im using my phone to write this reply... )
i know this might be a stupid question for everyone that knows what their doing but i do have a registry editor but i cant find the place to change the pie agent.....where can i go to change that?
thanks in advance for your help
why not just use kaisertweak or search for the reg key, although i bet its easier to use kaisertweak
im really a noob so i dont know anything about kaiser tweaks but i have task manager that has reg edit on it...so id rather use that then just getting a new program. i hope someone can help me find that location to switch the user agent. but just wondering does changing it really make a major difference???
No HSDPA
With the previous ROM I was able to take advantage of the increased speed of "H" while on the internet after using the Kaiser Tweak. With the new 1.62 ROM my "H" seems to have dissapeared and I only see the 3G even after running the Kaiser Tweak again. Anyone else having this issue? Did our friends AT&T get greedy and lock us out of the high speed?

I do not believe it will work with Opera. Opera routes you through a proxy which reformats content for your device. The websites my not recognize this or the device ID may get screwed up. I was trying to visit some music website that only allows visitors from the US, but was told I could not access bc I was browsing from outside the US - bc the Opera server is not located in the US.

Restoring app (QuickGPS) from Windows directory?

During the hunt for a fix for the hopeless GPS in the new 6.1 Rom, I stupidly uninstalled QuickGPS, and now - since I've found no other fix and it's patently something that HTC need to sort out - I'd like to reinstall it, in the dim hope it will be useful again some day.
Although there are various QuickGPS cab files floating around, none of the ones I've found are the peculiar 6.1 version (marked "Version 1.0" but copyright 2008, and with a higher build number starting 220.821). The only ones I've managed to download from anywhere are the original versions from 6.0 Roms, which - while they don't work any worse than the newer one - aren't any better either, and may well prove to have some other problem under 6.1. They must have changed it for a reason right?
Now it turns out, from reading up elsewhere, that my QuickGPS is still there on the device, sort of - if I set File Explorer to "show all files" and browse the \Windows folder, QuickGPS.exe is there, and it's the right version - I can even run it and download data. But it's no longer an installed program, so doesn't run automatically, and (since I deleted it's registry entries before) it's not setup properly there either.
Without a CAB to re-install it properly, is there any way I can persuade my phone to accept it back as an installed application, short of a hard reset? Or, does anyone perchance have it as a CAB?
I do not know why people are using the newest QuickGPS. THe only difference the program has is cosmetic. THe only purpose of QuickGPS is to have your phone read the GPS signal quick if you are using AGPS. Hence why it needs to connect to the internet to work.
True GPS signal is one from the GPS receiver built into the phone. First are you using AGPS??? Secondly if not, I do not see the reason for having it on your phone unless your using AGPS.
Ok, firstly, there is no "cosmetic" difference between the different builds of QuickGPS, so I'm kind of doubting your authority there straight from the off. The lack of any obvious difference is exactly what makes me think there probably is a more significant change under the hood. Secondly I was using the latest QuickGPS because that's what came with the latest 6.1 ROM update (which I'm also using). It wasn't some crazy whim of mine; HTC put it there, presumably for a reason.
You're confusing QuickGPS with A-GPS; in the context of the Tytn II they're two different things. QuickGPS is an app which downloads ephemeris data when online (during Activesync sessions etc) for use later offline. In theory, the GPS should be able to use this data later to speed up fixes, since it already has the empheris data and doesn't need to download this from the satellite. At the point at which you're out and about using the GPS, no internet connection is needed, because QuickGPS has already stored the data locally. This worked well (for me at least) on the old 6.0 ROM, but is sadly broken in the 6.1 update (and no, reverting to the original QuickGPS doesn't fix it - the problem is most likely in the radio).
A-GPS is different, it's using live data from the network to help triangulate position and speed up the fix - meaning a live connection is needed whenever you use GPS. It's only active if you have it switched on in the registry, and AFAIK only certain networks support it - on HTC branded devices it's always switched off by default.
Is there really no way to reinstall an app, when all the files are apparently just sitting there?
in the first place.....how did you install the app? did you lose the cab file that you used to install it?
secondly.......how did you uninstall it, but not manage to remove the file
The only answer i know will work for sure is a hard reset. (Not the answer you were after I'm sure).
After messing with various quickgps cabs trying to fix this problem i managed to stop my gps switching on at all. (Didn't go near the Windows Intermediate Driver settings).
The only positive is it gave me the opportunity to try a new 6.1 rom (Dutty's Diamond) and i'm really happy with the rom but sadly we still have the quickgps issue.
For a test i compared to a friends Artemis and after a Quickgps update his tomtom had all the sats in view within a few seconds. My posh Vario 3 didn't have anything.

QuickGPS gets installed automatically after a hard reset - it's in ROM as one of HTC's customisations. The surprising thing is that I was able to uninstall it, through the remove programs screen.
The files are still there because, apparently, they never left - they just got hidden. "Show all files" in explorer reveals them though. What isn't there is an installation cab - just the app files themselves, doing nothing.
That said, since I ran one of those files it now *is* doing something, happilly - after I messed with the options it re-established it's registry settings and is now running again as a service in the background, surviving soft resets. I manually recreated the shortcut in "programs" and basically all is well again, although since the option to uninstall hasn't returned it presumably still considers itself uninstalled somehow...
About the cosmetic difference I was referring to the QuickGPS in the newest DIamond Roms that are being ported over. I appologize for not reading your first post more clearly. Sorry about that

Essential processes for AT&T Tilt Users after each rom flash

Essential processes for AT&T Tilt Users after each rom flash
I know this has been mentioned thousands of times throughout this forum yet n00bs often need assistance fixing their hardware keyboards, email, HTC weather, quick gps, and so on after they flash a new rom for the first time.
While hanging out in Bansville for a couple of days I realized I have been answering the same questions continuously. This is a mini text tutorial, which offers simple fixes for imperative AT&T settings.
So you installed a version of hardspl, flashed a new rom, and performed a hard reset. What next? Well primarily in all probability, you want to make sure the clock settings are in am and pm format and the date is set to m/d/y. To change your clock settings follow this navigation
Start>settings>system>regional settings>time tab>time style drop down set to h:mm:ss tt
To change your date setting:
Start>settings>system>regional setting>date tab> select the date style of your choosing and select ok.
Next, I like to restore my files such as my appointments, contacts, text messages, etc. I personally prefer to use PimBackup. Below is a .zip file for PPCPimBackup. It is an uncomplicated program to use and a lecture is unnecessary to navigate throughout this application, as it is straightforward.
After I restore my files, it is time to inaugurate the Tilt keyboard fix, which repairs your slide-out QWERTY keys to be mapped correctly. For example, without this fix Fn+W will appear as ! opposed to @. Below is the cab file you need to install to remap the keys appropriately. Following the installation of this cab file, perform a soft reset.
The next thing I usually do is correct my connection settings. First, I install ATT_Settings.cab, which you can find below. Then I navigate to the following:
Start>settings>connections>connections>select the advanced tab>select networks>Change both drop downs to Media Net> select edit on both drop downs>proxy settings tab>uncheck everything for both media nets that you changed>then hit ok or x when you are finished.
At this time, I set up my email. However, remember NOT to save your password, you will do this in the following step. If you are using HTC HOME, most likely you are, select the little envelope and create a new account. You can find your email settings by using google if you are using pop3 or whatever.
Next, after I set up my email without saving the password, I install removehiddenproxy.cab, which you can find below. This cab file is important as it allows your pop3 email account’s password to save without adding extra characters, allows for your quickgps to function properly each time, and it also allows you to use HTC Home Weather without getting a connection failure. So install this cab then go back to the email you just set up, edit the account setup, enter your password, and save it. Now, go back to your today screen and tap your weather tab. Now tap Select City and select your city (*Note there are a few patches available to select your town if you do not live in a big city). Anyhow, notice the menu button where your right softkey is, select menu and turn your temperature scale to Fahrenheit and select done.
I suggest setting up your WiFi at this time too.
Well this is my mini tutorial for a basic setup on your AT&T Tilt after you flash a new rom.
Have Fun Flashing and Take Care.
*Special thanks to the creators of these cab files and JimmyMcgee for teaching me the basics.
Am I missing something too?
Is there something to do regarding getting a reasonable GPS fix after flashing newer 6.1 roms or is it a known problem. I keep flashing down to older 6.0 roms with 1.27.14.09 radio because of the faster GPS fix. I would love to use the newer roms but GPS fix time is a deal breaker for me. To save you some time I use SPL 3.28 with 6.0 roms and 3.56 with 6.1 roms. I bounce between Q-mobile and RomEos roms now that we lost dutty. Ive tried all the newer radios and personally they all stink for GPS. Sorry about your brief ban and welcome back, I need your wisdom
*cough* sticky
AWESOME. I keep saying I need to: Start fresh, get NetCF 3.5, get a light rom. But it all seems so complicated to go from current configuration to start over completely, but this will help a lot! Thanks! Now to find the time and the 'right' ROM.
Thanks very much for the reminders, and for the CABs. I flashed my first 6.1 ROM last night, and forgot all about the hidden proxy!
I agree that this really needs to be a sticky...
This is a good tutorial, but here is a good side note to add.
By removing the hidden proxy (which ya do with the removehiddenproxy cab), Tilt users won't be able to get to media net (http://device.home or http://home) or cingular video as the hidden proxy is needed for those.
Then they should just use the Restore Proxy, and that will allow MEdiaNet.
Proxy Manager has both in it.

Been having the same issue and finally I think got a break. Tried about 10 SR's and the lock times are steady inside the house.
BTW using DK2
does windows mobile have a localhost file like windows? would remapping those to their needed servers allow the bypassing of the proxy?

I deserved the brief ban.
Anyhow, I noticed that when running 6.1 roms with the Tilt you need an application such as HTC GPS Tool or GPS Test, to open your internal gps, prior to opening your GPS Software.
These are the steps I use to utilize a GPS Fix after each soft reset:
1) download latest updates for quickgps
2) Open GPS Tool>com 4>baud 4800>Hot Start>Then click Open and wait like 30 seconds
3) Open TT7

I've attached GPS Tool for you, good luck.
What exactly does the remove hidden proxy cab do on AT&T Tilts? If you go into your connection settings and uncheck the proxy server- is that the same thing or something different than the cab file does?
Hey Red,
I attached an ATT settings cab which does not enable the proxy by default, and also enableds creation mode in MMS settings. I thought it might be helpful for your thread here. Also, it may seem too advanced for beginners, but i have a thread started here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418468
This has a step by step guide to how to create an xml file using Schap's Advanced Config 3.0, which can be used to provision all of your advanced config preferences during your UC setup. This tool has really made it very easy to do reduce the amount of work that goes into flashing.
I also attached a cab for total commander, a free, more full featured file explorer; gps test, another gps tool; and advanced config 3.0. Hope it helps.
Thanks... this is a great thread!!!

I'd really like to know this too!
Why would anyone ever want the proxy checked? Does it do something for you to have it checked?

It removes a HIDDEN proxy, one that you can't remove without a cab. Without it enabled you can't connect to medianet home, and some other things. Most users like to disable it for a myriad of reasons, one of which is that it causes you to be unable to browse while connected to your laptop.
The box that you check in connections is a separate issue, and i think that is actually just old settings, i'm not sure, since even on the AT&T website it tells you no not to have that checked.

Awesome. So, if I run the cab and remove the hidden proxy- can I then tether my laptop (connect to the net using the Tilt's data)- without getting caught by AT&T? Or is there more to tethering without getting caught?
