I am looking for a quick and easy way to switch from 3G to Edge (Yes I have a Tilt on AT&T) from the today screen so that I can conserve battery life most of the time but get to 3G quickly.
I thought that phoneAlarm could do it by profile but it doesn't.
Freeware would be great since I am not looking for anything profile, time or location based but at the point I am open to whatever.

Thank you sir.. I have been on the board for too long trying to figure out some flashing things and got lazy.
I have working this issue from the phoneAlarm end as well since it seems to have decided to stop working on me for some reason
http://www.pocketmax.net/smf/index.php?topic=5374.msg37434#msg37434
Have a great weekend!
I did some more testing and the plot thickens (or at least becomes more complicated) I read here that the Tilt changes bands differently than other WM6 phones (although I have not yet figured out how) so I think that may be part of the problem.
I flashed _Alex_ ' s ultra clean ROM and the only thing I installed was phoneAlarm. The phone was connected to MEdia Net in 3G. When I switched to a profile that did not have 3G (selected as GSM in the options) the connection disconnected and reconnected, but it remained 3G.
The same was true in reverse if I selected a GSM profile and reset it would start is EDGE. If I changed it to 3G profile it would disconnect, reconnect and stay EDGE.
I started checking the comm manager (I am using a 10 button comm manager) and the 3G selector would change with the profile although the band switch would not occur.
What is funny is that if I used the 3G selector on the comm manager the band switched with no problem, following the same behavior patter of disconnecting and reconnecting.
I don't know enough to really dig in any further but I will keep googling how the Tilt changes bands and hopefully one of the more technically adept folks will have something figured out or can give me an assist.

3G and edge use the exact transmitted power! (Always on connection is the main problem!) An Ipod uses Edge which is slow. But what the hey, you have a question and it will be answered here...

That is interesting, because I get significant improvements in battery life if I spend the day on EDGE vs 3G. In fact, my battery rarely lasts more than 3/4 of a day with light phone usage if I am on 3G! This experience would see to be pretty common and I have even seen something that says 3G uses up to 4 times as much power as EDGE. This was supposedly the reason why Apple made the iPhone EDGE not 3G.
I am not bashing you and there may some electrical engineering reason why they use the same transmitted power but real life this translates into something different.

That does it!!! I'm finished...
One of the 10 key Comm Managers works. I don't recall what thread I got it in but it works fine for me.
HTC changed the old way to change the band in tilt. Now It isnt enought to change a registry key and reset the radio device. Now are needed dark and undocumented api calls to htc libraries. Bandswitch and commmgrpro(bandswitch + profiles) do it correctly.

Thanks - I will pass this along to Bruce, who is the phonealarm creator, and is trying to fix this in his next release. Another reason I love the product!!!
Shameless plug for them but it really is an awesome product and the support is great! Worth every freakin' penny!

I think HTC have been changing things again as my new Touch Dual, with latest bandswitch does not swap, it will allow the change and it even shows it in the system settings, but remains on 3G

If Apple could have made it 3G they would have. Steve Jobs was quoted in an interview that the reason the iPhone was not released with 3G originally was that the hardware to make it 3G was not out long enough to be tested thoroughly at the time the phone was being built and tested, not the time it was released. Once the decision was made to go Edge, Apple couldn't release a much better phone within a quarter or two so the incentive to get it out sooner went away. I have it on good authority (rumors in the media also confirm this) that the 3G iPhone will be released Q2/Q3 in 2008. Also, given the popularity of the iPhone and Cingular's small but growing 3G network at the time of release, Cingular was concerned that not everyone that bought an iPhone would have been in 3G areas and would have complained about performance. This is why Cingular has seemingly accelerated the roll-out of 3G-ready areas faster over the last few quarters. This comes from a few friends at Cingular.
If a new 3G iPhone will have battery life as long as the current Edge iPhone (removable battery would be the bomb to carry an extra one or extra capacity, it will be a very compelling unit, despite the inability to add 3rd party apps. And to bring this full circle to the thread, if a 3G iPhone allows 3G to be turned on/off, look out Windows mobile....oh, and removable storage capacity, too, and GPS..., and a good IM program...
Try these Comm Managers. They both work perfectly fine on my tilt.
None of these work on the Dual as it moans about permissions when installing.

I am currently using the dutty black 3G and that works perfectly. What I have done is link comm manager to a button so I can access it quickly and switch as needed. Changing comm managers does not address the phoneAlarm issue since phoneAlarm changes reg keys (according to Bruce) and with the Tilt (and maybe the Kaiser) it takes "api calls" or something else I don't fully understand.
If there is anyone who knows how this works and would be willing to share with Bruce over at pocketMax so he can build this into a update release that would be awesome!

Just tried the new GMaps 2.0 and my location works flawlessly.
Called "My Location," the feature comes as part of the release of version 2.0 of Google Maps for mobile. My Location uses cell tower ID information to determine (approximately) where you are. Google says that it uses special "Google-developed-algorithms" to determine this, which sounds like fancy talk for triangulation (a supported phone can determine how far it is from the three closest cell towers and then pinpoint the approximate spot of the caller).
Anybody else tried it?
Did you try while driving ??
(I'll still keep my GPS chip for a while)
It's better than nothing but not very accurate. On my Kaiser, I will continue to use my GPS.

Yes, though when I'm on 3G towers it gives the "temporarily unavailable" message, works when I get an EDGE tower - 1600meter granularity!
Great feature, very cool, will not replace GPS. Our 3G towers just came up last month so that may be why they're not in the Google database yet....though I recall other reports of 3G location not working.
Richard
Didn't work for me either, I'm in the UK (south wales)
Did notice the GPS location is a little more accurate with 2.0
Tended to jump a lot with the older version
I heard it was only good to a 3 mile (4.8km) radius. Not nearly good enough to give you turn by turn directions.

No, even google's site says the accuracy is dependent on the cell tower spacing. In my case, at my desk at work it reports 1600m (1.6km) accuracy, so definitely not turn-by-turn. In a densely towered (urban?) area, I suppose it's vaguely possible to have sufficient accuracy for rough turn-by-turn though.
Richard
Still, GPS is obviously much better.
I would have appreciated this with my older non-gps phone though and I am hopeful that they will offer this as an iPhone update for my wife.

I've tried the Navizon version and it can be a lot better in urban environments where the cells are far smaller. In most of central london, Navizon can get a fix to an accuracy of a hudred yards or so. I have seen it do better than GPS since it is less vulnerable to the "Urban Canyon" effect. In rural areas, the coverage of each cell is much larger and I would expect the accuracy to fall to half a mile or worse.
Martin
I live in Minneapolis. AT&T rolled out 3G here on 1 November. I loaded up GM2.0 and it was right on the money. I was even inside my house.
I don't see how the program could triangulate a device out in the suburb. In a metro, yes, it's possible. Satellite GPS navigation is not going to be replaced anytime soon; however, I can see the "traingulation" come in handy for emergency situations.

It doesn't matter where you are, suburbs or metro. If you have 3 antennas, you can use triangulation, period.
While it's not good for turn-by-turn navigation, it would be good enough to get a quick fix and be able to search for something in the immediate area.
Try thinking of it as a tool for people without gps. Imagine you're lost and you can get a general idea of where you are. Then drive a mile and do it again...now you have a bearing on where you are headed.
This won't replace gps or give you directions until it can get to that accuracy.
I just install it, and i was coming on here to create a thread but looks like someone beat me to it. gMAP just got a whole lot better, I was like oh sh*t it uses the cell phone towers to show my location. this the bomb. google stepping the game up.
Mine works great on the 3G but i do get that unavailable bar sometime.
so for those of us that like the way the old version works with 'track location' gps feature, is the new 2.0 version beter or just stick with the old ?

I do not appear to be able to use my built in gps in this new version of Google Maps. The settings are identical to my previous installation which worked flawlessly. The cell based location does appear accurate on my initial tests. But if I turn off the gprs or 3g radio and switch to wifi I am unable to get a fix at all.
I broke my own cardinal rule and overwrote my backup of cabs so I cant reinstall the previous version, Doh.
Does anyone have a copy of the previous version installation cab? Or is there a trick to using the Kaisers built in gps? as I said earlier my settings are setup the same way as worked previously.

2.0.0 works fine on my Tilt, as did 1.7.1 - both with the GPS Options set to let Windows manage the GPS. Way back when I had to tell it COM4: to get Gmaps to work, IIRC.
In any case, 1.7.1 can be downloaded from Google here:

HTH,

Hello All,
Been reading this forum for quite a while, 1st time posting. This community has helped me improve my life immeasurably in the past couple years.
I got an HTC Tilt a couple days ago. Unfortunately it's not able to be returned or warrantied. When I first turned the device on it saw the 3G network (or at least displayed the icon; I never had the chance to connect). I navigated to my sd card and went to delete Fieldtest.exe, which I had placed there for ease of use from my previous 8525 (I do some network testing for my job). I forgot and tapped it rather than holding down the stylus and opened the program; the 3G icon disappeared and went to E and I haven't been able to get it back. I've tried clearing the memory and have completely reflashed the device using the HTC retail ROM. Also tried kaisertweaks to enable HSDPA and the bandselect tool.
This is really bizarre. I don't think that Fieldtest.exe could have damaged just the 3G portion of the chipset.. but I'm running out of ideas. I've searched through this forum (finding wonderful nuggets of information as usual - can't wait to try Digitaltigre's method for using the Kaiser, or maybe old 8525, as DiNovo Mini) and others to try to find others with a similar experience and I've done the obvious (reflashing the radio I thought for sure would do it). Besides this the device works great - EDGE connects and is usable, voice calling works, tethering works, etc.
Any ideas you folks can come up with would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Shoehopper
ROM: 1.62.502.0
ROM date: 01/17/08
Radio version: 1.27.14.09
Protocol version: 22.45.88.07H
And I'm in a very strong 3G area (-65 to -70 dBm typically)
did u try changing your rom or doing a clear storage?
I tried both. The ROM I reflashed was the same version as the ROM that was already on it however.
try a different one
are you sure your area is 3G enabled? or at least have decent enough 3g coverage.
try this one addon it's called band select. it adds a tab to your phone settings where it lets you pick auto, regular gsm (G,E), or 3G. You can then force it to be on 3G only. The problem is, if this doesnt work it may mean what you thought earlier that either your 3G chip is messed up or you just not in a decent coverage area for 3G.
i cant find it on my pc, if you do a quick search you may unveil it. hope that helps
using 3g off/on in comm manager works for me or if i wanna get serious i use bandswitch or comm manager pro www.commmgrpro.com

Why is this? Even a secondhand Tilt will be less than 1 year old, and covered by AT&T's warranty.
I tried using BandSwitch, when I pick UMTS it constantly searches for signal (... under the antenna icon and x on the connection icon). Selecting Auto reverts to E.
I am certain of being in UMTS area (Redmond, WA HQ building of certain large wireless organization.. which is also why I cannot warranty or exchange he device).
Thanks,
shoehopper
errr nm i did some homework. Thought i had an answer.
eeeekkkkkkk
weird. I have some bugs depending where i am if the signals are real strong, i sometimes cant seem to leave my wifi on and stream info over 3g AND use my bluetooth. Are you running anything else at ALL. ? in the case i mentioned, i sometimes have to turn off my wifi to get my bluetooth to work.
Maybe some weird bug w/ something else your running?

Found on the side of the road?

Stolen?
It was company provided, which means I'm not out anything personally, but it does have a $ value nonetheless. Being company provided but outside the retail channel, it is not able to be warrantied or returned. Sheesh.. people assume the worst.
I am not running any fancy connections. Haven't even turned on the Wifi or Bluetooth. No programs (besides the aforementioned kaisertweaks, and now BandSelect). It's not that it doesn't connect; it doesn't even SEE that there is UMTS coverage available, only EDGE.
Thanks,
shoehopper
I'd try a warranty exchange anyways, if I were you. (Once you've determined if there is a hardware problem...) Supposedly the warranty follows the device, no matter what channel it takes to get to the current end user. Anyways, that's what I've heard, and it wouldn't hurt to try. Just call customer service and ask for the warranty department.
Are there two physical radios in the Tilt/TyTN II? I ask because I'm experiencing a strange problem that nobody else seems to have seen before. That, or nobody noticed my posts here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335096
The problem is that phone/data work fine when the phone is in non-3G mode. (In the Comm Manager, available in most recent ROMs, I have disabled the 3G mode, so I'm using only GSM here in the US).
In 3G mode, I'll get a 3G icon (used to get an H, months ago), but will be unable to place/receive calls, and no data connections will be established -- they'll all time out or say that "the answering modem has disconnected."
So, back to my question: is it possible that my radio is partly damaged? Can that happen? I'm not sure how else to explain the utter lack of 3G on my phone.
can't have a damaged radio, you could have the wrong radio for the device and/or version of windows mobile. 3g only works if in 3g area, have it enabled and turned on through comm manager.also make sure you're network settings are correct and make sure phone is set to auto in networks tab in phone settings, not set to gsm/cdma
PS, the search tool/wiki are you're friends since this has been covered too many times

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've tried everything I can think of, and everything suggested. Nearly ever ROM I've seen, with nearly every radio; every combination of wap.cingular, isp.cingular, etc. The AT&T store thinks the phone is defective b/c they can't figure it out, either. In response to your comments: tried every version of windows mobile and most of the radios available; I'm very much in a HSDPA 3G area (used to get 5 bars "H" all the time); 3G is enabled; network settings are correct; phone is set to auto/auto.
Any other ideas, anyone? I appreciate it!
I've been have the same exact problem. I posted about it about a month and a half ago, but got nothing.
Everything worked perfectly until one day, out of nowhere, 3G stopped working for me. I've also tried multiple radios and ROMs and to no avail. The weird thing is that when it stopped working, nothing had been changed in months.
I know that I'm definitely in a 3G coverage area because I used to get 3G service all the time.
If I turn 3G on, it'll work in an edge only area, but as soon as it switches over to WCDMA, the problems occur.
This is super aggravating.

Well, the good part is, you're not alone. I found another forum online (can't remember where, I'm at work now and I found it last night) were several people were having the exact same problem -- in various countries around the world, including the US.
They had decent luck flashing the stock HTC ROM and then the French radio mentioned on the big XDA radio post (search google for "kaiser radio" and you should see it). However, I did the same and still have the 3G problem.
did you try using a shipped att rom and see if you still have this problem? if the problem goes away, then maybe its just a rom/radio mismatch problem. if it doesnt, then its more likely a hardware failure.
I'm in france, and since few days, i've the same problem, and i haven't change the radio. the phone is going for repair.

As mentioned in this thread, some shipments of the TyTN II have faulty hardware with broken 3G support.
No patch or driver update can fix this because it is a hardware problem. I experienced exactly the same issue with my first TyTN II and finally replaced it with a new device which works flawlessly out of the box.
I believe you should also better get your device replaced if you ever want to use 3G.

Hi,
I am looking for an application that can automatically switch profile depending of your location (using GPS).
Does such application exist for WM6?
Thanks,
Yeah that would be nice.
I have tried CommMgrpro:
http://www.commmgrpro.com/
But I can't find out if it works on GPS too.
It work perfect on GSM.
But it seems to drain the battery way too fast.
The interface is terrible!
Far too complexe, I am not a .NET developer, I'll try to post that as a request.
So may be someone will figure out how to make a simple app...
Thanks,
I can't see the point, do you switch on GPS each time when approaching your office so it can select right profile ? Wouldnt it be easier to press an on-screen button to do that ?
You are right the GPS would have to be always on.
I was just using an application on symbian called miniGPS, it was doing exactly this but by using the GSM network. GPS would be far more accurate.
Are you sure this would be workable in practice given the high power consumption of the GPS?

IIRC you will only get edge on this if you jump to tmobile. If you use the ATT rom, you will probably have media net setup automatically and it might be a pita to try to setup.
Maybe I read the specs wrong on the frequencies though

My old Tilt had a hole for the stylis to reboot it.

no your right about the frequencys. tmobiles 3g is 1700 mhz att is 1900 I think. I dont use mobile internet any way so 3g is not so necessary for me.
You are basically screwed if you thought you would get "3G" on tmob (then again, they don't have good "3g" coverage, so maybe you wouldn't notice).
Return the phone or admit your mistake.
Yea really, I don't see why ppl are buying this phone specifically desiged for the AT&T 3g Spectrum to use on TMO. But, then again TMO does have a unique choice of bands who no one likes to manufacture unless you get it from them. Atleast, Nokia makes AT&T band devices once in a blue moon.
Questions
I am not a newbie, but have some questions re my new Pure:
1 - Is there a program that can map and control all or more of the buttons using push and hold - like hbuttons?
2 - What about making the zoom area usable for special functions?
3 - is there a working TCPMP that can play all .flv files including the on2v6 codec?
I've only had mine for ~24 hours at this point. I had a Tilt before this, but I have a couple questions about the Pure:
1. The TouchFlo screens let you set the wallpaper for the home screen, but the other screens all have the Death Star logo. Is there a way to change that without flashing the ROM? I don't want to flash yet because:
a. it's too soon
b. the HSPL program didn't work.
2. Next to the USB port, there are two holes; one very tiny one above it about the size of a stylus point, and another to the right that is much larger. I'm hoping that the top hole is the microphone, and the one on the right is for a phone strap. Can anyone confirm that? I'd hope not to damage the microphone with my repeated attempts to hang a keitai strap from it.
3. Is there a way to remove the battery icon from the status bar on top? I plan to use a different one that I like better, so having the other one there is redundant.
In return for getting my questions answered, I will check back here and answer others' questions based on my experiences.

It's true. None of the 4 national CellCos (is that a word?) are compatible with one another. The ones that share frequencies don't share technologies. To exacerbate the problem further, Europe uses 2100MHz, which is different from North America. So, if you want 3G to work right, alas, you have to get a phone from your carrier.

Too many questions and so little answers? Where's our wiseman?
I just bought mine but I'm going to wait to see the answers, like that won't be posting the same questions

I've only had mine for ~24 hours at this point. I had a Tilt before this, but I have a couple questions about the Pure:

3 - If you go to alarms screen the more tab (last tab) you can have the time show up at the top.
I just got the Pure from ATT store and happy me
I am a complete noob with windows phone, so bear with me
1. I connected my phone to the Wi-Fi at my house, and launched Opera. However 90% of the time the browser just simply could not load a webpage. Anything else that require data would not work either (this includes the weather tab). Every once in a while it would load up some data and then it would stop working again. Did I get a defective phone?
2. Like everyone else has asked, is there a way to change the blueish TF3D theme with ATT logo to something else?
3. On the Internet tab on TF3D, when I click Launch web browser it automatically directs me to att.net. Is there a way to change it to some other websites?
^

Works perfect! Thanks!
Any light on the default att.net homepage issue?
