Often times I have noticed with my Tilt that I will lose the signal (simply by hitting a dead spot in the service), and it will not come back until I do a soft reset. First, it shows the indicator that it is looking for a signal, but after about 10 seconds it switches to an indicator with an exclamation point, showing no signal. It never regains a signal after that. Once we get to a place where I know AT&T service works, I will check my wife's phone at that very moment, and she has full signal. We're both on AT&T btw. I know it's not the service, cause her phone never does this. If she hits a dead spot, as soon as we're out of it her phone picks service right back up. I have the stock AT&T ROM that shipped with my Tilt.
Anyone have any ideas why it quits looking for a signal after it loses it?

Ive noticed the same thing.
Not sure of why this happens, but did find an easier work-around than soft reset.
If you go into your phone options, under the Network tab, you can manually tell the phone to search for the network.
I've also had that problem.
I'm not sure wich fix is faster, but using the Wireless Manager to turn the phone off and then back on also takes care of the problem.
hey, i also have that problem.. i'm using a tilt with one of dutythroys roms, with the new .17 radio.. thought maybe that was the problem cuz i never really noticed it with the .11 radio. btw, you dont need to soft reset, just give it a minute or two and it'll come back
omar
I noticed that after messing with KaiserTweak and enabling HSDPA. I live in Minneapolis where HSDPA is now enabled. However, I frequently travel west towards Alexandria, and once I leave the metro area, no HSDPA. If I don't go into the comm manager and disable 3G, I have no phone service at all. Once I disable 3G, I regain phone service.
Ok good, so I'm not the only one.
Thanks for the tip about turning the phone on and off in wireless manager, rather than doing a soft reset. That is, indeed quicker. However, we shouldn't have to do that at all.
I've noticed this a lot when driving home from work. I'm thinking that it's probably because at work I'm in a 3G area, and on the way home I lose it. Is there anyway to disable 3G altogether? Or does anyone know of a tweak that will keep the phone continuously searching before it gives up?
I have that same problem with my TILT, but I also had it with the 5150. It's been around for a while.
Bump again. C'mon people - you gotta give us something. Is no one else having this problem?
For the record, I didn't have this problem with the stock HTC ROM on a different phone.
Having this problem sometimes on a T-Mobile Vario 3, although mine seems to not recognise the sim card after it looses signal. I had thought it related to the phone being cold...
I have the same problems but only with 3G on. When I select GSM only no problems at all. I updated to .17 and wonder whether that's the problem since I don't recall any issues with .11
Thank the lord I thought it was just me. I made a thread about my blue tooth causing it but I realized it is my drive home that does it. I hit an area with no 3G and it goes out.
I have the 10 button comm manager installed and was wondering if that was the culprit. It is weird because EDGE will switch to GSM OR GPRS (not sure the correct name) when 3G is off but 3G will not switch to the others. Does anyone without the 10 button wireless manager have this issue.
Had similiar issues while traveling in certain parts of southern China. Try upgrading the radio from ver. 1.27.12.11 to 1.27.12.17. Follow this link for more info...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349528
I am redoing the phone back to the stock condition of how it arrived. I will tell you if it goes back to normal for me.
I will update you tomorrow becuase it is a certain part of downtown Houston that cuases it to go out .
I put the original OS/ROM I am not sure what you call it. For the first time in a long time it switched from 3G to EDGE. I wonder how many of us complaining have the 3G ten button communication manager. I will let you all know more tomorrow after my drive home from work.

can everyone who has this problem start posting their Radio Versions ... please
I used to have this problem with the Tmobile SDA (at that time it was driving people nutts) and that phone did not even have 3G. I did experience the same problem with Tilt (on tmo sim) Radio Version .11, and since tmo usa does not have 3G anyways, I just changed my phone band to GSM and the problem does not exist anymore.
Radio 1.27.12.11
Protocol 22.45.88.07H
in German o2 and T-Mobile network, problem persists after repair trial of HTC.
So 24 hours after redoing the phone back to its original state the 3g problem is gone. I watched it switch from 3G to edge to G all in 24 hours. I will keep you posted if it stays this way.
So basically the big change I had was removing the 10 button comm manager.
I was having a problem that I think is similar, or the same. When I travel from Edge to G my phone will ring and it indicates "connected" but I can't hear the person and they can't hear me. I soft-reset and the phone works again, until I travel back from G to Edge. I ended up reflashing to the original HTC Shipped ROM and I am waiting to see the results.
I am not sure of my radio version when it was flaky. I am using 1.27.12.11 now.
I've noticed the problem described in the original post maybe three times since I bought my TyTN II late in September. It's always been when I'm travelling that this happens. Fortunately I've not missed any calls as a result and switching to 'Flight Mode' and back to 'Phone' in Comm Manager (the standard HTC version) works around it for me. All a very standard setup here so I don't think the problem is a result of any customisations (although I do have HSDPA enabled in settings).

Folks,
(I've searched around a bit and seen some reference to this problem but no definitive discussion. I apologize in advance if I missed anything and humbly request a pointer to the existing info if so.)
Just got a Tilt last weekend. On 3 occasions so far I looked at the screen and noticed that the phone had no signal (triangle with ! next to it). So for several hours each time, no one could call me. Going into comm mgr, the phone radio was still on.
This was in an area with no signal problems; soft reset or pulsing the phone radio in comm mgr would restore functionality with 3-4 bars. I finally nailed this down to having been in an area in the center of the building where I work, where signal gets lost. It appears that my Tilt never automatically recovers from a lost signal.
I saw this problem on the ROMs that came with the device and now it also continues with the new one that was just released by HTC a couple of days ago. In case it matters the phone is unlocked (using jump_spl and the other related tools and procedures found here, thanks).
Do I just have a defective Tilt? I mentioned this to others in my office and a few folks also claim to see this, and like I said I have seen *some* mention of this on the internet... I'd be astounded if this were really a problem endemic to all Tilts -- would people really put up with this?
Anyone have any additional insight?
It used to happen with me when I had the stock AT&T rom. I flashed the stock HTC rom and I don't recall ever having that problem, and now I've flashed SNE v2.5 and I don't have that problem.
My suggestion is to flash a new rom and see if that helps, and to make sure you're using a correct radio.
where do I get official htc radio and rom downloads?
hi folks,
where can i get official HTC radio and ROM downloads? I have an HTC TYTN II (acquired in Hong Kong) with ROM 1.56.721.3, Radio 1.27.12.11 & Protocol 22.45.88.07H just last month and already I'm encountering problems with the phone just losing the signal and staying lost and I'm considering upgrading however since my phone is brand new (practically), i want an "official" upgrade so as not to void the warranty. any help would be appreciated.
thanks and best regards...
I'll have to decide whether I have the cohones to flash an HTC ROM. Might at least be worth a try.
try this, go into comm manager, than settings for the phone (right soft key), than over to the Band tab, if I select the network type as GSM and leave the band on auto mine will contstantly serch for signal. i know this because my office is as close to a bomb shelter as they come and it never stops searching.
another good to this is battery life is improved
the BAD, if you want to use 3G you have to turn network back to auto and band to auto. not really a big deal cuz i dont have 3G here (yet).
a little workaround that works for me.
Thanks for that... I am running an AT&T ROM and even though I've supposedly turned on the Band tab in phone settings via KaiserTweak, I do not see a band tab. Should I?
I have almost this same exact problem! As of two weeks ago, my tilt started not allowing me to make calls
I then realized that it was also sending all my calls to voice mail. Thing is, the phone says that I have signal and has the Edge connection sign at the top. Whenever I try to make a call, the phone says "operation cannot be completed" or it will simply beep at me as if the call ended, right after it started.
A soft reset allows this to work. I've had this problem even happen right after hanging up with someone, and then trying to redial another number 5 seconds later. I doubt the phone really lost the signal.
Any ideas?
Hello
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=367355
Thanks
I had the same problem with my O2 XDA Stellar, it was fine for a couple of months, then I could hardly call out on it, email wouldn't send, could rarely go online etc etc. It seemed to be better on GSM/GPRS than 3G, HSDPA etc. I assumed it was a harware problem & as it was under warranty I got a replacement from O2 & it's been fine so far.
AT&T replaced the SIM card in my phone and I believe this has fixed the problem. I have lost signal many times (elevators, garages, etc) and it recovers each time.
Device: Tilt
Carrier: AT&T
ROM: Duttys_WM6.1_Official_5.2.19209_1_58_16_27
Have been running this rom for a couple of weeks with no problem. All of the sudden yesterday I noticed signal kept coming in and out, wasn't able to make or receive calls. Since then, I've tried a couple of diff ROMs, diff radios, and for some reason it just doesn't seem to catch a consistent signal. Signal keeps jumping from 3G to EDGE to having nothing. When I try to make a call or go online, signal just goes dead.
Any suggestions onto what could this be?
Thanks
same issue here....in NYC
i'm having the same issue.
if you switch the band signal (click on the phone icon on the top..then go Bands tab) to GSM. all is well. you will no longer rotate b/w EDGE and 3G when trying to make calls/internet. but when you revert the setting back to Auto, the phone may work for a short time while it still thinks its under EDGE. then when it senses 3G network available, it will try to connect to that signal and disconnect both your voice and data. i'm in New York City, so trying to get on 3G network is not an issue.
ive had this issue for about a week now thinking my setting got all messed up somehow. i've reflashed my tilt to the original ATT ROM from the HTC ATT ROM update from one of Dutty's ROMs. still doesn't work. i'm starting to think the 3G chip is fried...
AT&T technicial support can't help either. the guy i had on the phone said there was a 3G tower literally a block away...
might have to call warranty to get it exchanged...
does anyone else have any ideas why this does this?
Change the radio and see if this helps. I keep a copy of all 6.1 radios on my phone so I can flash on the go for the best signal possible.

haha... yeah, thats kinda what i figured. so now im "3G-less". im on EDGE only like my old blackberry... at least i have wifi, gps, camera in one device unlike any current BBs out there... still kinda sucks. ill give ATT-tech a shot anyway...
So, I called AT&T yesterday... was on the phone for a couple of hours with NO RESULT! They did they all the towers are working around my area with no problem though... i think it might be what finaldock said, "3G might be fried"
Any suggestions anyone?
Oh yeah, I'm running the ROM below now... still w/the same problem.
Duttys_WM6.1_5.2.19700_Hybrid V2_1_65.14.06
So, I've lived in an area with just EDGE and my TyTN II for a year now without probs. I've changed the ROMs after using HardSPL from Olipro, etc. without probs. I went over the weekend to Ft. Lauderdale, which is a 3G area, and my phone went crazy. It first shows an H with full strength... then when I try to make a call, it either won't connect or the signal goes completely dead. Other times if I just watch it, it will switch between H, 3G, E, and even G. Sometimes it'll even lose the signal altogether. What is going on?!? I've tried different radios (1.65.20.29 with WM6.1, 1.27.12.11 WM6.0, etc.) and they all do the same thing.
Interestingly, if I go to phone settings and change my band detection things from Auto to GSM and the data to 4 U.S. GSM frequencies, it goes right to Edge and all phone calls go through fine (but now I don't have 3G/H data)
Any ideas guys?
Funny, I have the opposite problem. Live in 3G. Two months ago I went to an area that doesn't have 3g. The G icon popped on my phone for the first time ever. It switched betweeen E and G constantly. The phone dropped calls constantly. The problem followed me home. The G pops up at my house now. I am still having the drop calls. There is a thread on here about this. Unfortunately, I have not found a solution. I have been calling ATT about it. I had to keep calling to get them to check it out. They say it some software issue with their towers. Don't know but I get $50 credit and 1000 rollover minutes from them
After you flash your ROM you should always do a master reset to ensure you don't run into any problems. Did you flash your ROM with the SIM card in the phone? They say you should take it out of the phone when Flashing.
yeah, i've been flashing all along with the SIM without issue... but of course, I've never gone to a 3G area with the phone until now. Outside of 3G areas, I don't have the problem... I called and asked about any issues in Ft. Lauderdale, and AT&T said there weren't any network issues and to bring in the phone........ of course I have an unlocked TyTN II (not a Tilt) bought from a retailer here (its original CID is DOPOD something), so they wouldn't be helping me much if I brought it in.... argh...
Same problem with my device
I have a stock Kaiser 130 series (T-Mobile Vario III) and the same issue (H->3G->E->Nothing) happened to me after doing a lot of roaming (China, Japan, USA, Europe, ...). First I also thought that this might be a SW issue but no reset, flash, etc. could fix it. These symptoms are also described in a lot of other forums (Google helps ) and the verdict: bring the phone back to the dealer.
In my case: T-Mobile already knew about this problem with the Kaiser and exchanged the motherboard of the phone during warranty....
I'm not sure if this is helpful to you - at least it might save you some time fiddling around...
Yes, this is due to a radio hardware problem in early units, that chimes in after a few months. Mine is at the service center for the same issue right now. No other solution. There are already several threads about that.

Same issue here, WCDMA is broken ("no service" when locking to WCDMA, GSM only when using Auto). It was intermittent for a while but now has kicked in as a full-time UMTS/WCDMA failure. It also cost me $150 in excess data charges as the disconnect/reconnect caused some apps to relogin overnight
It does look like a RMA is the only solution, I'll post if there's another way - I'm going to try debugging the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) to see if I can get any more info out of it.
cheers
Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me

Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.
Hello all you clever people out there
i hope some of you can help me before i throw this thing at the wall
let me try to explain the problem i'm having
I bought this phone about six months ago and all was going well untill about two months ago
the problem i'm having is with phone service, at the top of the screen i get a '!' next to the signal indicator (Y) but when i touch the icon, on the next screen i get the Y with bars to indicate signal
on the phone settings screen it says no service and if i touch 'register on network' it says 'registering' then nothing???
what i dont understand is that i can still connect to the internet and get email via gprs (edge doesnt work when this happens) or occasionally via HSDPA or 3G
the only things i cant do is make or recieve calls or texts
Ive tried soft and hard resets and nothing changes, the only way i can get the phone service back is to put my sim into another phone, connect that to the internet then VERY quickly put the sim back in my diamond, and that doesn't always work
even when i do get it working it doesn't last, longest its gone is two days before it loses the service again
i've checked to make sure the phone hasn't been blocked and been to a few phone shops but no one seems to have any idea what the problem is or what to do about it (i've even e-mailed HTC and yo can immagine the respose i got! )
i know that i'm in a good area for signal as i've lived in the same place for years and hads lots of different phones on the same network (same number, same sim etc)
any ideas would be much appreciated as i'm sick of having to take two phones with me incase this one fails on me
phone details;
ROM: 1.93.405.1 WWE
DATE: 8/6/8
RADIO: 1.00.25.05
PROTOCOL: 52.29.25.12H
OPERATOR: orange (uk)
please help me
anyone with ideas can reply to this or email me direct [email protected]
thanks for reading this and hope that someone can help
Mike
btw just my 2 cents, orange has the worst coverage in UK, its terrible! and i have noticed my ignito has drastically worse signal on 02 than my other handsets.
those 2 combined, could be a possiblity.
yeah i know that but i have another phone on orange and sde by side my other one has full signal and my diamond doesnt
but if i touch the the indicator at the top the next screen shows at least two bars even when its not working, like i said, i've lived here for years and never had a problem before and this is relly annoying
but thanks for your input
yea, from what ive read, you might be able to flash the rom that deals with the radio on your phone, which may help, as my xda is pitiful even on 02, as we speak i have 1 bar, other phone is full!!
i though about flashing the rom and went on the web site, put all the details in and got a responce that no flash was availiable for it, i dont know if that because its locked on orange or if there is just no update
its really starting to piss me off because i think the phone is great (even though it isn't the most recent!)
thing is though, if i was to do my jiggery pokery and get the service back where i am i always get full signal on EDGE or GPRS
its confusing as hell
i'm just hoping that some one else has experienced the same and has a quick fix
i've downloaded some things from freewareppc and thought that something might have screwed about with my phone so got rid of it all and hard reset but no joy
i mean, as we speak now, the phone has no service but i've got it hooked up to the laptop i'm online with so its got signal (wifi turned off)
'jiggery pokery' - technical term
I have seen a somewhat similar problem too. Every now and then (especially just after making a call) I used to get the exclamation icon (No service) and couldn't make/receive calls for 10-15 mins until it finds network again. I used to try finding the network by trying Manual mode first (which actually failed to register to my network) and then selecting Automatic mode.
Solution: I complained to my service operator who were finally able to solve the problem in 2-3 days.
