GPS Giving Wrong Coordinates - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

The GPS on my Tilt had been working fine since day one (when the Tilt came out). However, since yesterday, the GPS is giving the wrong location...it is WAY OFF, as I am in Miami, and it is telling my that I am near Turks and Caicos!!!! I've been using the GPS through Google Maps, Live Search and GPS Tuner (for geocaching), and it worked an all. The only thing that stopped working some time ago was the QuickGPS, but it didn't affect the GPS from getting a fix.
Today, I followed the registry tweaks to get QuickGPS working again and it did the trick (it downloaded the latest satellite information), but GPS is still telling me that I'm nowhere near South FL.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I think that's the "old" bug that was mentioned a long long time ago by Paul from MoDaCo.
I got that issue as well yesterday
Dont panic, just try to find a place to stop your car then do SOFT-RESET.
Then start TomTom again.
That will fix the problem.

uhm.... "mentioned a long long time ago by Paul from MoDaCo." -> could u supply any more information about this one? May this explain my problem here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352747
?
Thx for any hints....

Well, it was long time ago, when the Kaiser was newly released.
You can try to search in the MoDaCo website.
At least I got this issue more than once since early September 2007.
Not serious problem though, but annoying.

yeah i had this issue last night, i didnt have to do a soft reset though, i just shut down TomTom and relaunched it...and i was up and running...annoying, but at least its nothing that occcurs ALL THE TIME..

GPS Help?

Forgive my inability to find a solution in search (at least I made the effort).
Stock Tilt
Stock AT&T ROM
Registered TomTom Nav6
GPS worked flawlessly for the past months.......matter of fact, the entire device has been flawless until now.
Tonight when I pulled the phone from my case, I got a pop-up explaining that QuickGPS had expired (or some such silly blue screen). All I could do is close it (I've never launched QuickGPS since I've owned the device and have no idea how it could have activated).
Best I can tell, my receivers are now disabled.
Settings in TomTom still show:
other GPS receiver
baud 4800
comm4
Suggestions?
try opening quickgps ( u'll find under programs") and click download and download the data..then run tomtom again and see if u get a fix
Yeah download the data from QuickGPS. It takes an insane amount of time to require a fix with any program without a sattelite map in my experience.
You might have never noticed it because it downloads automatically when you connect to ActiveSync or other data networks if enabled.
I'm pretty sure that's your problem. A current sattelite map (I don't really know what it's called) lasts for 7 days.
Thanks for the tips.
What seems to have happened was that QuickGPS must have been activated last week at some point (no clue exactly just *how* that occured). The message I got last night was that it had "expired" (I see now that each download lasts for a week then expires).
Nothing I tried would get TomTom receiving again. After reading further threads, I noticed that we should NEVER TOUCH EXTERNAL GPS SETTINGS (which of course I had already done at that point). I figured I was facing a hard reset.
But my solution came as passively as the problem did. In THIS POST "ach2" suggests running GPSTest (included in the thread) after a hard reset.
I figured, wtf....why not give it a try before I hard reset? I let GPSTest run for about 30 minutes until it had acquired a HDOP score....minimized it....launched TomTom....and low-and-behold all is working normally again.
I've since disemboweled QuickGPS so as to never bother me or TomTom again.
Thanks for the suggestions and thanks ach2 wherever you are.
Actually QuickGPS is something you want to use. It downloads the Sat. info & saves your device major time in aquiring the sat tracks.
I use Quick GPS all the time, even if it hasn't expired.

GPS not working suddenly!

Help! Only had this a couple of weeks and it's starting to drive me nuts. When I first got it, Google Maps had no trouble finding satellites but now it comes up with 'No GPS receiver was found' screen over and over. I did switch QuickGPS off for a bit and I think it's since then it's not worked right. Does anyone have any idea what I can do? It's a UK branded Orange TytnII (Kaiser).
*I really want to start messing about with ROMs too but have a Mac and don't think there's a way I can is there?
Have you tried going outside? Line of sight sometimes will work!
Yes I have, hasn't worked. It wasn't working when I was walking round London yesterday but I assumed the tall buildings were causing the problem but now I'm in exactly the same place I was when I first got the phone and then it was was picking up 4/5 satellites. Now it's just coming up with a screen telling me I have no GPS receiver. Could the receiver in the phone have been damaged? I haven't dropped it or anything and have been pretty careful with it.
Reinstalled Google Maps. Now seems to be working. Grrr. Sorry to have bothered everyone.
Read this thread for a possible fix; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333275
You probably need to run quick GPS and get the download.
I have this set automatically now and it usually downloads weekly. I often wonder what I'd do if I needed the GPS somewhere where there was no phone signal to download the updates!
Hi, I had the same problem, and all apps GPS don't work !
Hard reset no change the problem.
I sent htc support, Finally they changed the motherboard !

Please help... No GPS device

I've had my diamond for a year. I've been running TomTom 6 or 7.0
The nav's been working fine. My last mod was an updated Radio 1.25 and the best of my knowledge, it's been working fine.
However, now all I get when I start TomTom up is "waiting for a valid GPS signal"
I went into config and I've got other NMEA GPS receiver selected, 4800 baud and COM 4.
The same settings I've been using except now it doesn't work.
I hate to bother ya'll but I put my phone on ebay and I was making sure everything was working before it got sold and discovered this.
I don't want to sell it without it working correctly.
Thanks,
Mark
I actually had the same thing happen to my 8925 Tilt. and recently getting the Fuze I have yet to have it continually get a good gps lock. One day it will find 10 satellites and the next 8 days it wont find any. It is very annoying and not something I expected out of a brand new phone.
Well, I did a little searching and apparently it seems a lot of people download a gps fix update directly from tomtom.
I'll call them monday. I checked their site and even installed tomtom home but was not able to find anywhere to get a download.
I'll post back Monday.
Thanks,
Mark
Just a quick update: I had left TomTom running for 15-20 minutes each time I had tried to use it with no avail.
Then before I went to bed last night, I just left it on (and plugged in.... damn battery drainer) and when I woke up this morning, it had found it's satellites.
I'm still going to call TomTom Monday but apparently it's working, it's just slow.
Mark

Diamond + TomTom = semi-functional GPS (not a lag problem)

I have been using TomTom7 on my diamond for almost a year. First several months it was working fine, just some lags or freezes on roundabouts, which was not a big issue.
Then it started doing this strange behaviour at some occasions: I start TomTom, it finds satellites fairly quickly, I start driving, all fine. Then after some distance it loses coordinates (you can see the blue arrow, but everything behind it is grey and it is not following the route). Sometimes it fixes itself for a short time, then does it again. Sometimes this is all, whatever you do (reroute, restart tomtom, restart phone) it won't come back. Some days none of this happens.
Nothing in configuration had changed, I've been using the same radio and rom for almost a year.
I was really annoyed by this, could not simply rely on tomtom. Now I updated the ROM, and yesterday this happened again
If this was discussed before, please point me in the right direction, most of the threads I found by search were about lags or configuration.
It might be the Quick GPS Programs, I recall having a simular problem where the GPS would work for about 5 minutes then turn off, only turning the phone off then on then running up tomtom again would get another fix, only for it to run for a further 5 mins or so.
I think I disabled the quick GPS in the registry using PHM registry editor or something simular.
It might be worth considering updating the ROM. I'm running BsB's which seems much better than the stock offerings.
I've also had this problem with the latest rom from HTC (regular rom) with the radio 1.09.XX
I've updated to radio 1.15 and the problem is gone.
Thanks for you replies.
I've now updated the radio to one of the latest (1.09.25.23), the ROM was already recent (2.07 Gen.Y). Will test it during the week.
The solution based around disabling of Quick GPS - wouldn' it make the start up time longer ?

I have tried to install this radio, but got "Invalid Device Id" message, 1.09 installed with no problems. The phone is security unlocked, could not understand what was the issue and just moved on .. :-/
Could be error in timezone
Hi all,
I had a similar problem and it appears to be the timezone, by reasons unknown my Diamond was set to a timezone of Stockholm, now that looks ok, but it is not a normal timezone.
I changed it to Stockholm, Berlin, ... the standard timezone and once again I got a fix fast and easy.
The thing that you get a gray screen is that you our somewere in the middle of the earth according to the GPS, you notice this if you could see the coordinates and altitude.
I have iGo in my Diamond, but the problem was the same when using Google maps so it wasn't a problem with the program.
I have also changed my iGo to have a manually selected time zone, because I'm not sure if it might be iGo that made the change for me.
But now all my GPS works splendid, and I have a fix within 15 seconds.
i do have similar problems.. but it only happens when i'm in the dense core of downtown toronto where all the tall buildings are..
I think it's because the tall buildings are blocking the signal somewhat that is why your GPS kept on running out or coordinates and relocating itself again

I am in rural Scotland actually, the only high buildings here are castles which are miles away .. so this must be something different.
Neither it seems to be dependent on the sky nor battery level ...
p.s. testing new radio, so far so good ..
Just some feedback from testing: the original problem seems to be solved, but now I've got something much worse - sometimes TomTom freezes several second after the launch, and nothing can be done apart from restarting to bring it back. Don't know if this is a radio's or ROM's issue as I have changed both. Reinstalling TomTom from .cab did not help.
Anyone had similar experience ?

Hard reset maybe will help
Yes it may, but 3 days before holiday I do not want to be installing everything from scratch. I could try another ROM too if not this.
Tried - atifix, starting with bluetootsh on, wanted to reconfigure GPS setting in TomTom, but can't get there yet ... must be either BT or GPS connectivity

Updated radio to the latest 1.15.25.14 with 1.15.25.35 rilphone, made no difference at all ..
I think I found it - G-Profile service was the cause of the problem. Once I stopped it, TomTom has got 100% starting rate. It's a pity, was a nice small app to have.

xperia X1 freeze when use GPS

Xperia X1 freeze. After 6 months I have problem with my xperia and gps. When I try to use internal GPS (whenever software), display freeze and I have to replace batery. I have tryied to flash another ROM, it works few hours and now I have same problem. Any ideas?
Hi,ok let´s see, like you ive had the same problem, just when i was using any gps navigator the phone suddendly stopped and that was sucking me a lot so after that i started to think what could be the problem, and at the end after a lot of time i found where was the problem and what was the solution. To find the solution i decided to hard reset the new rom with which all my gps problems started, and following the instalation steps of all programs and configurations i found the problem and this was related with the quick gps, before using this program to upgrade my gps location my mobile was runing tomtom and others without freezing, but after upgrade the gps location with the quick gps my mobile started to freeze. So this is the problem, just do this try to hard-reset and install eveything but dont, i repeat dont !!use the quick gps or this will freeze your phone again. Following this step your phone will run the gps navigators without the freeze problem
Then men after this try to do this and let me know (PLEAE) if your problem still remain ok? see u and hope you can solve this problem like me.
I too have just started having GPS problems as listed above!
The problem seems to be Quickgps...as soon as u run the quickgps update(which you may have on autodownload) Tomtom crashes and you have to reboot the phone...
I have reinstalled a different rom since and still have the same problem!
i dont know if there is a cache for this program that can be cleared or something other than reflashing the device
As the days go on and the 7 day update starts running out im guessing more people will start having the same problems!mine happened 28/10/09 evening time!
Same problem: freezing XPERIA when using GPS!
Yesterday I connected my X1 to the PC and got the latest Quick GPS update. Today I'll need to use my gps for a trip... Wanted to prepare the navigator and got the same problem like you guys.
Probably something wrong with the last update since I have not installed anything nor updated the firmware.
Is there any way to get any older version of the quick gps? Before after each 7 days period, it was possible still to use the GPS. Even though it was much slower but in the end it always works before updating... Will a hard reset give me an old version of Quick GPS?
This is so annoying at this moment. Hope somebody find a solution fast.
Hi all,
Got the very same problem yesterday.
I tought the GPS HW had gone. I have uninstalled the Route 66 SW, but there are some files that still lay in the phone.
Then re-install everything from scracth, but problem remains. Now i know i a GPS. Could be worse if was a HW problem in the phone.
Possible solution
Hi
I have maybe same problem with other phone (HTC Rose). If any application try to connect to GPS, phone freezes. After Hard Reset it was OK, but only until I use QuickGPS. Then it again freeze whole mobile after use GPS application.
My temporary solution:
1.
Erase QuickGPS data. Simply delete 2 files: Temp\xtra.bin and Windows\xtra.bin
2.
Soft Reset phone.
Try it, and let me know.
working so far...
Thank you motaba.
I did what you proposed and erased the files. It worked actually.
I have been running my gps now for some minutes and it did not freeze. It found the signal and started to navigate without freezing.
So at first glance it seems to work. I will try it further and tell you all about further information.
but how can the gps work so fast and well without these quickgps files? are they totally redundant?
Greetings
Thanks a lot motaba.
Works for me as well.
As yes, it got the location pretty fast without the "A GPS mambojambo"
I was gettin 8-9 statelites.
P.S: Anyone can tell me were to get TomTom 7 for X1 ? Route 66 is pretty anoying some times....
X1 GPS
After deleting the fails xtra.bin my gps start to work for now, but I want to ask do I have to use quickGPS update if I update the gps from there the problem will be start again
Yes delete xtra.bin helps!!!
Does anyone has older version of quick gps. I still want to use quick gps, becasus waiting for gps to fix is annoying. thanks
Hi all,
After deleting the xtra files and confirm that works i went out, and during the driving i used the GPS.
Even went going out of the car and switching GPS programm off, as soon as i got back into the car and switch programm on, the GPS location came so quick that was unbeleivable. Only time to switch it on , put it into the older start the car and when i look into it, was already navigating.
So my advice is FORGET about Quick GPS.
I think ESA as lunched a new GPS satellite for the European system, I wonder if has anything to do with with it. ??? Anyway it's great !!!
No, ESA satellites are not primary GPS satellites. They provide WAAS/EGNOS correction info only. AFAIK Xperia does not support correction, so it does not work with these satellites at all.
The problem could be with QuickGPS data. Many users started to have the problem at the same time. It seems xperia uses QuickGPS if they are available. So any corruption on QuickGPS side makes GPS unusable.
Sometimes just forced QuickGPS reload helps .. but sometimes not, and that's when the trick with xtra.bin comes handy.
Thank you all in this awesome forum. Deleting the xtra.bin files solved the problem for me. Even the time to log the gps position seems not really to be slower in my case
Hi Dr Sid
Thanks for the explanation.
My point was that the xtra.bin removal works, and after i did that the GPS position was found very very quickly without starting Quick GPS.
I wonder why because, before it would take 10 minutes or more, if quick GPS was not used.
Summer time change?
Hi
I was wondering what is wrong with xtra.bin. It is downloaded from web server xtra1.gpsonextra.net or simmilar.
In my country (Slovakia) at 24-25.10. there was time change from summer time CEST (GMT+2) to CET (GMT+1). Maybe it is some dependance between change of time and GPS problem.
Wiki says same time change is all over Europe.
All of you with same problem, please check registry, what servers are set in QuickGPS. My phone is HTC, so registry are there:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\QuickGPS\0\0]
"port"=dword:00000050
"IP"="xtra1.gpsonextra.net"
THANKYOU SO MUCH!!
This has been driving me crazy!! I have only just learned to put ROM's on my phone and this is when the problems started, so I suspected the ROM's was causing the problem.
Deleted the 2 files and now my GPS works perfectly.
Excellent fix, saved me so much time.
THANKS THANKS THANKS !!!!!!
Works for me too (Buenos Aires - Argentina).

It's very probable that this is the problem, since I have it since a few days also. But it's strange, last time change I had no problems with it.
hehe, a bit slow to find this thread
yep the quickgps data is corrupt somehow.
took me a lot of reboots to find this out.
A-GPS still works just try running google maps with GPS turned OFF!! you get a rough idea of where your are.
QuickGPS gives a weeks calcutions of predicted GPS satalite locations which can then be used to reduce the cold-boot gps startup time.
If you live near the coast at all, your GPS chip will also pickup the land based stations that broadcast static information which helps in the accuacy of location.
It is quite possible to live without QuickGPS, it just makes the startup time anything upto 2 minutes.
However, with quickgps being used for so many phones, it should not be too long before its all fixed again
It's just pity it can't be disabled by some normal means. If you delete the file, QuickGPS will load it back next week.
Also it could try to compare data from the file with data from the satellite. If different satellites are visible than those which should be visible based on the file, than GPS could realize something is wrong. It does not.
