GPS not working suddenly! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Help! Only had this a couple of weeks and it's starting to drive me nuts. When I first got it, Google Maps had no trouble finding satellites but now it comes up with 'No GPS receiver was found' screen over and over. I did switch QuickGPS off for a bit and I think it's since then it's not worked right. Does anyone have any idea what I can do? It's a UK branded Orange TytnII (Kaiser).
*I really want to start messing about with ROMs too but have a Mac and don't think there's a way I can is there?

Have you tried going outside? Line of sight sometimes will work!

Yes I have, hasn't worked. It wasn't working when I was walking round London yesterday but I assumed the tall buildings were causing the problem but now I'm in exactly the same place I was when I first got the phone and then it was was picking up 4/5 satellites. Now it's just coming up with a screen telling me I have no GPS receiver. Could the receiver in the phone have been damaged? I haven't dropped it or anything and have been pretty careful with it.

Reinstalled Google Maps. Now seems to be working. Grrr. Sorry to have bothered everyone.

Read this thread for a possible fix; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333275

You probably need to run quick GPS and get the download.
I have this set automatically now and it usually downloads weekly. I often wonder what I'd do if I needed the GPS somewhere where there was no phone signal to download the updates!

Hi, I had the same problem, and all apps GPS don't work !
Hard reset no change the problem.
I sent htc support, Finally they changed the motherboard !

GPS won't fix after moving

Hi,
I used my Touch Diamond and Touch Cruise in US w/ GPS for a while, then I came back to Istanbul for a trip. Now, both of my HTC phones won't have a fix to a coordinate, even if the GPS receiver is detected, and actually showing satellites in programs (say, iGO).
Does anybody know what I should do?
Have you tried updating the coordinates through the program quickgps?

yes, I've ran quickgps, didn't work out. Then I hard-resetted the diamond, and tried again. Nothing got me a result.
Can you actually suggest a GPS software, to check if it is the software or hardware, acting weird.
Google maps?
Both of these units by HTC has the static navigation thing enabled. For more information, have a look at this link http://www.etenblog.com/2007/11/20/static-navigation-explained/
If the GPS has been turned off while having travelled over a long distance (like you did from the USA to Istanbul), your GPS needs much more time to get a new fix. This is something you can't do anything about. QuickGPS should help, however since I have QuickGPS (just a cpl of weeks) I haven't travelled yet to the other side of the world With my older BT GPS it took me a very long time as well the first time when I turned it on after I exited the airplane.
How long have you been waiting to get a fix while standing still outside in the open air?

Actually, I've used beelinegps (http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm). I've put a chair in the middle of backyard and kept the phone there for ~2hrs, in the night (so that it wouldn't overheat) w/ open sky.
The satellites are shown, but it simply won't fix.
After hard reset I haven't updated quickgps again, suspecting that it was deviating the calculation to the other side of the world .
In the worst case, I'll update quickgps and put the phone in charge and leave it to open sky for a night, and see what happens.
Is there any other solutions, btw?
Thanks

Hi,
I've actually tried to figure out how to disable static navigation.
Neither sirfdemo nor sirftech.exe worked just the way they are.
I believe the problem was the intermediate driver/port of windows. So I disabled that, and let the programs scan thru the ports. But that way, they can't figure out actual hardware port number and baud rate.
Does anyone know how I can access gps chip directly?
Thanks
Solved!
I finally solved the issue.
I got HTC GPS Tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=360477 and installed it. After that choose clear memory and cold start. That was it, nothing much about static nav.
Thanks

Tomtom 7 - Poor GPS reception, are you in a building?

I have had trouble with the GPS on my device ever since I received it.
The start-up time is very slow 5-10 minutes standing in the garden.
In the car I very rarely get a lock at all
Once I finally get a lock the signal is poor and drops out easily.
When I restart a GPS app (even 10 minutes after closing) it seems to take the same amount of time to re-start as though it is starting from cold again.
I've tried Google Maps, TT6 and the HTC GPS tool, several different ROM versions, aGPS on and off, Quick GPS on and off. None of which seem to make any difference.
Yesterday I decided to give TT7 a try and had the same problem getting a signal but also had the following message on the GPS screen 'Poor GPS reception, are you in a building?' I'm now convinced this is a hardware issue as my previous touch diamond (HK version returned due to a faulty speaker) picked up the signal quickly and was very reliable. I have spoken to the Expansys about this, but they have said that if I can get a signal at all then it is not a hardware problem and must be software related.
Is anyone else having similar problems or getting the same message in TT7
More importantly any one managed to find a fix for this?
If TomTom has a weak signal, then "Are you in a building" is a standard message TT7 is giving. Whether you're in a building, a basement or metal encapsulation.... it will give you that message Mine takes about 15 - 30 seconds to get a fix, with TT7 when I use it for the first time after my phone has booted.
I still get this message if i'm standing in the middle of my garden. The performance you are getting is similar to what I had on my first device, Which was one of the Hong Kong devices from Expansys. The replacment which I am now using is a European version. can I ask which version of the phone you are using.

What ROM version do you have?
My HK one had issues with the shipped 1.34 ROM but is fine now...
Have you changed any of the default settings for GPS?
I have not changed any settings and my TT works fine.

Mine is European too, Dutch to be specific.
It's running rom 1.37.404.3.
Same problem in my samsung omnia
I'm using 7.450 build 9080 I'm sure it's a tomtom issue cos pocket street can fix the gps position, but tomtom keep me saying poor gps reception.
I have setted the gps to com7 and hardware com9 4800, I have also disabled the enhanced gps.
Ay help please or if someone knows how to disabled the internal gps so I can use my external gps receiver.
Regards,
Hlov
i noticed the although it might look a long time for tomtom to get a fix, just enter your destination anyway and it seems fix goes hell of a lot faster!

I have the same problem. Can't figure it out. My signal i sporadig. Specially when you go to settings....show gps status. I can see hoe the gps gets contact for a cpuple of seconds and then disconnect. And it does this over and over again. I can se my position, but the map never gets in colour....strange...
Have you tried updating quickgps? I find that unless the quickgps data is valid, tomtom can't find any satellites.

Diamond Gps Sucks

I am so annoyed with HTC Diamonds GPS. It just sucks and doesn't work. I had earlier updated the radio to 1.25.06 and then it didn't work. Other members over here advised to switch to 1.25.05 and yet it doesn't work. I did a hard reset too but no luck.
Map King fails to work and Google Maps keeps on saying trying to seek Satellites and yet it just shows 0.
I am truly disgusted with HTC and will never again buy their products
Funny, I have a Diamond too, and my GPS works perfectly. Actually it's the best GPS I've ever seen. Flash 1.93 ROM, then use QuickGPS to download actual GPS positions and try again.
By the way, you're not trying to run GPS inside the buildings are you? Go out into the street and try there. GPS doesn't work inside.

Kid:
Have you set manual settings in google maps?
This way:
COM4
and 4800.
Luck!
I had a flat tyre on my Mercedes the other day! I am so annoyed with Mercedes!
I will never buy Mercedes again!!
you need out your battery from your phone and put it back after one minute.
GPS works perfect on my Diamond. Much better than some car GPS devices i've seen. Dunno why yours doesnt work. Maybe you are a noob?
Doesnt work inside buildings btw..
Mine also working fine with MapKing2007 and HTC GPS Tool....
BTW I'm setting it at 57600.... is this fine? or actually does this setting matter?
I am currently running Swift Rom v5 and yes i am trying the Gps outside. Regarding the settings in Google Maps, i have kept it to automatic. QuickGps is also updated.
I will try the battery thing and will set it to manual
Thx to everyone for their input,
As the "I will never buy a HTC again" threads are coming up in decent sequence, I would dare to see a system behind it if I would be a bad mood. Backdoor marketing at a glance?
My TD GPS is the best I ever had. Sat fix with a loox N560 and Navigon MB6 - 2 minutes waiting. Same with my TD: 10 seconds waiting.
nextavenger, sometimes the prob is not in your hand resp. on the table but between the ears or behind your eyes? Just a guess though ...

I have no problem with the phone. I own two iphones too. I am enjoying my Diamond more than these iphones. When i had picked this phone, i had never intended for Gps feature but moving to a new city all together, i figured the gps can actually help me.
I went through all the previous threads complaning about the Gps lag and gps problems before starting this thread. Its not only me who is facing a problem. I did a complete research before starting a new thread. I bought maps specially for this and if the device doesn't work out of the box, its kinda sad.
it is not diamond's problem, gps is great in there !
When I bought my TD the GPS worked perfectly. Then i start flashing various roms and radios, and began experience various problems. Hard to get fix, losing signal and a huge lag.
Finally i flashed the new official rom 1.93 with radio 05 and all my problems disappear. Now it works great. It takes only seconds to get fix and the signal is rock steady, and the lag is no worse than other gps units i have before.
Try Duttys newest rom, he has integrated the radio and rom in his download. He thinks that flashing radio and rom at the same time may cure the gps problem, and i think he is right.
I flashed dutty's latest rom,did a hard reset and my gps gets a fix in a matter of seconds.

for everyone who has gps problem, follow these steps and reset gps data:
1) remove battery for five minutes
2) install gpstest 1.04 and set it to com4 at 4800 baud
3) wait for a fix in an open space (about 3-4 min.)
4) exit the program and start tomtom (set it on integrated gps) or other navigation software and here you go!!!
These steps help everyone who has gps problem after installing, removing navigation softwares and works with every gps.
I hope this will help you. Bye.

Is it working yet ?
ok so i did this thing:
Flashed my phone using Swift's recent rom i.e v5.5
Hard Reset
Setup my phone
removed the battery for 10 mins
installed GpsTest
Loaded Google Maps
and voilla! its now working. Gps is locking fast too.
this is the best gps a ever had (except the SIRF in the XTEN until it quit on me)
from day 1 my gps worked fine with the usual lag. changed radio and flashed a custom ROM (see my signature) and no more lag.
i can guess looking at all the gps threads (i think there are more threads on this subject than threads on new ROMs) that there is a problem. i just don't understand why so many ppl has it and so many don't
btw, i am using iGO8.
Never had a problem neither with my Diamond. On the 1.37 ROM with .03 radio it took my GPS between 15 - 30 seconds to get a fix after a cold start. Which I think is already quite fast. Now on the 1.93 + .05 on a cold start I'm able to have a fix in 5 seconds more or less. I'm really amazed! I loved my Diamond already, now I love it even more

Pity you can't retract the heading of your thread....
My GPS works great also. No lag, fast locks.
You might want to download "htc gps tool". In that one you can do a warm reset on the gps, and that sometimes solves a gps problem.
Just dont run "clear storage" option in the program as you then have to restart, download quick gps settings, and restart again.
Greetings.

Diamond + TomTom = semi-functional GPS (not a lag problem)

I have been using TomTom7 on my diamond for almost a year. First several months it was working fine, just some lags or freezes on roundabouts, which was not a big issue.
Then it started doing this strange behaviour at some occasions: I start TomTom, it finds satellites fairly quickly, I start driving, all fine. Then after some distance it loses coordinates (you can see the blue arrow, but everything behind it is grey and it is not following the route). Sometimes it fixes itself for a short time, then does it again. Sometimes this is all, whatever you do (reroute, restart tomtom, restart phone) it won't come back. Some days none of this happens.
Nothing in configuration had changed, I've been using the same radio and rom for almost a year.
I was really annoyed by this, could not simply rely on tomtom. Now I updated the ROM, and yesterday this happened again
If this was discussed before, please point me in the right direction, most of the threads I found by search were about lags or configuration.
It might be the Quick GPS Programs, I recall having a simular problem where the GPS would work for about 5 minutes then turn off, only turning the phone off then on then running up tomtom again would get another fix, only for it to run for a further 5 mins or so.
I think I disabled the quick GPS in the registry using PHM registry editor or something simular.
It might be worth considering updating the ROM. I'm running BsB's which seems much better than the stock offerings.
I've also had this problem with the latest rom from HTC (regular rom) with the radio 1.09.XX
I've updated to radio 1.15 and the problem is gone.
Thanks for you replies.
I've now updated the radio to one of the latest (1.09.25.23), the ROM was already recent (2.07 Gen.Y). Will test it during the week.
The solution based around disabling of Quick GPS - wouldn' it make the start up time longer ?

Could be error in timezone
Hi all,
I had a similar problem and it appears to be the timezone, by reasons unknown my Diamond was set to a timezone of Stockholm, now that looks ok, but it is not a normal timezone.
I changed it to Stockholm, Berlin, ... the standard timezone and once again I got a fix fast and easy.
The thing that you get a gray screen is that you our somewere in the middle of the earth according to the GPS, you notice this if you could see the coordinates and altitude.
I have iGo in my Diamond, but the problem was the same when using Google maps so it wasn't a problem with the program.
I have also changed my iGo to have a manually selected time zone, because I'm not sure if it might be iGo that made the change for me.
But now all my GPS works splendid, and I have a fix within 15 seconds.
i do have similar problems.. but it only happens when i'm in the dense core of downtown toronto where all the tall buildings are..
I think it's because the tall buildings are blocking the signal somewhat that is why your GPS kept on running out or coordinates and relocating itself again

I am in rural Scotland actually, the only high buildings here are castles which are miles away .. so this must be something different.
Neither it seems to be dependent on the sky nor battery level ...
p.s. testing new radio, so far so good ..
Just some feedback from testing: the original problem seems to be solved, but now I've got something much worse - sometimes TomTom freezes several second after the launch, and nothing can be done apart from restarting to bring it back. Don't know if this is a radio's or ROM's issue as I have changed both. Reinstalling TomTom from .cab did not help.
Anyone had similar experience ?

Yes it may, but 3 days before holiday I do not want to be installing everything from scratch. I could try another ROM too if not this.
Tried - atifix, starting with bluetootsh on, wanted to reconfigure GPS setting in TomTom, but can't get there yet ... must be either BT or GPS connectivity

Updated radio to the latest 1.15.25.14 with 1.15.25.35 rilphone, made no difference at all ..
I think I found it - G-Profile service was the cause of the problem. Once I stopped it, TomTom has got 100% starting rate. It's a pity, was a nice small app to have.

I've had this problem too. While my dad was using Google Maps and getting great and accurate GPS location that picked up our signal inside Heathrow airport, mine was telling me we were over 3000 km away. I too would like to know.
download the latest satellite map and let it get a good lock, first time takes forever.
the GPS is only supposed to work if the phone has a clear view of the sky.
sometimes it will work with small interference (a car's roof for example) but inside a building you wont have any luck
make sure to enable "Use GPS" and not triangulate by signal
Never had any issues with GPS. If you have downloaded quickGPS data, it takes in matter of seconds (about 20) coldstart, hotstart is pretty much immediate. Without quickgps it is in terms of minutes, usually about 5 mins tops for coldstart. Hotstart is, depending on how far are you since you last time used GPS and how long is it, matter of seconds.
Hi there,
I used to have the same problem and I tried almost everything. I used different GPS tweaks which can be found in this forum like "turboGPS" but these would never work that well for me.
I found a great solution yesterday right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=571266
Install the "GpsModDriver_320.CAB", follow the instructions, softreset, start the program you just installed and watch your device find the sattelites within seconds.
Just read the instructions in the link attached above.
have fun!
This should really be in the General forum, it's not a ROM development issue (or you could check in the specific thread for your ROM if it's a custom one, in case anyone else has GPS issues).
it works! i love you guys!
