Hi - I've observed very strange battery behaviour with my Kaiser, and I wonder if anyone has any ideas.
When I use it with my Claro SIM (GSM/EDGE 900MHz), battery life is perfectly normal. When I insert my colleague's VIVO SIM (GSM/EDGE 850MHz), the battery drains so fast that the unit heats up. Still, the signal bars are 'full. Has anyone ever seen such a thing?
Another thing I notice is that when I use the VIVO SIM, the 'Kaiser interferes with conventional cordless phone (with a very annoying 'bzzz' sound). The same thig doesn't happen with my Claro SIM.
I checked the band settings (manual, and the right frequency is selected). Network selection is automatic.
I know that VIVO requires its customers to enable a service they call SmartMail, which is their data package. Could it be that when this service is disabled the SIM keeps trying to exchange data with their server and is blocked? I cannot think of any possible explanation.
The battery drain is such that in 10min it drops from 100% to 90% and in 50 min from 100% to 75%.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andre
PS: Both operators (VIVO and Claro) are in Brazil

Hey guys,
I flashed cm7.1 rc1, it's cool but I found the cell standby cost 40%, and phone idle also takes a lot of juice. My previous rom is arhd 1.10, on which the cell standby only takes 4%. I'm on the virgin's network in Canada. The virgin is acquired by Bell and of course it's using bell's network.
Is this network HSPA only? So in the *#*#4636#*#*, can I set the network mod as WCDMA only? Or by toggling 2G/3G to 3G only? Not sure if this will save some battery?
Switching to 2G only should save you a bit of battery. However, by far the best way to save battery is to switch mobile data off completely when you're not using it. I do this and my battery loses only 2 or 3% on standby overnight.
Switching to 2G wont work as Virgin Mobile/Bell does not have a 2G network backend like rogers or fido only 3G/4G so switching to 2g would make you have no service.
Yes. Virgin/Bell only use 1900MHz, the PCS band for their mobile communication, both voice and data.
In my opinion, use 3G only will save some power because the phone won't scan 2G frequency range. Moreover, setting the band as US band also will limit the scanning scope to save power. But after one day using, I didn't find much enhancement on battery life.
Ah, didn't know that. My apologies.

They act trully. Use 850/1900, bands ( for get the band number ) also if your in a area of low to no signal it kills battery becuase the phone is continues to serch for a signal almost as bad as call for battery. Also give you phone a week to calabrate your battery

if not just calibrate your battery I switched back to android revolution just cause i couldn't deal with the terrible camera app in cyanogen mod. And now display is back to my number one battery killer.
this is a "feature" of CM7.1, i found too
Yes, I also conclude this is a feature of AOSP.
I thought this battery use is a transient value for each process on battery draining, but now I found this is an accumulative statistics. The cell standby and phone idle's high usage make sense.
In the stock firmware, the fact that display always takes majority of the juice doesn't make sense actually, cuz the screen isn't always turned on.
Hii guys i'm new to xda...
Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong section.
I bought a xperia SP recently and i'm facing battery issues in it, i tried different softwares and everything nothing worked, finally i changed from WCDMA to 2G only now the battery is perfect, its draining my battery alot in WCDMA mode. I tried changing my sim with a different operator and now its working perfectly but i want to go back to my earlier operator where when i use that operator the battery sucks. Could anyone suggest me an solution. I'm from Sri Lanka

Hi mate, I think the solution for the problem is very easy - take the second sim card!!!
Why: here in Europe not every operator has the same frequency for their mobile data transfers. That means, when you have a sim from a provider with has only 2G/3G and you have configured your phone to WCDMA, the phone is searching all the time for this frequence and does not find it. Fact is, the battery sucks continuously.
So, when you are using the other sim which supports WCDMA, the phone finds it instantly and the battery does not suck futhermore. That´s it.
Change the sim. Greets.

I checked with frequencies its the same as my second sim, really dissapointed about this
draining fast on WCDMA mode its cause your area having weak signal for WCDMA of your provider, i have same problem with you, some providers in my country having weak signal for WCDMA mode only at my home area. Your phone will try to search again and again to get stable signal, that action causing the phone working hard and use more the battery power.. So maybe the best choice for you is use the second provider sim card or use the primary provider but running on 2G mode to get stable signal.
no bro i'm having perfect signal on 2G and 3G both, does it has something to do with fast dormancy? i read around that disabling it will help me, can anyone tell me how to disable it?
[Q] Cell reception indicator constantly flips between "no reception" display and bars
I'm using the Xperia Z3 Compact on TMobile's network in the US.
About 1/4 of the time when I turn on the display the phone indicates that it has no cell reception:
1) The phone shows no bars of reception, and a red X over the bars
2) The lock screen reads "Emergency calls only"
However, within a second or two the phone appears to acquire an excellent signal and I get a full 3-4 bar display. All of the areas in which I use the phone are marked as "Excellent" on TMobile's coverage maps.
This also happens intermittently while I'm using the phone. I'm not sure if it's actually losing the signal or if it's just a software issue. I've never had it drop a call or cut out while I'm talking.
I'm getting only acceptable battery life from the phone (about 25% at the end of the day) despite light usage and conservative app installation, even though this phone has a reputation for excellent battery life. My theory is that this might have to do with the phone constantly disconnecting from the network and then having to re-aquire a signal.
Anyone else had this experience with the Z3C?
Hey mate.. I posted the exact same issue a couple of months back. I was experiencing this exact same issue.
I've had my LTE disabled for about a month now and haven't had a single drop.
Not sure if LTE is a dealbreaker but since my device is a business line, I can "suffer" with better battery life and slower internet if I'm not dropping calls. I've considered trying a ROM with updated radio firmware but figured I'd wait to see what the current Lollipop update does ('ll re-enable LTE once I install it and see if it repeats the same behavior) for my phone before trying a 3rd party system.
Hope this helps

Thanks! Really gratifying to know that it's not just my device. Seems like there's a strong possibility this is the issue since I'm on a MVNO that's only been on this LTE network a few months. I've flipped the device into GSM only mode and we'll see if it helps.
Dumb question how do i flip it into gsm?

I'm having the same issue as you have described. For now I've set the phone to 3G prefered. Looks instantly better. Signal strength is also better.
Provider: Simyo (KPN network) - The Netherlands
Edit - Issue solved:
I switched from the Lollipop Baltic ROM to the Lollipop KPN carrier ROM for The Netherlands. The switching is gone for me. Battery life drastically went up.
Any update on this? I just started experiencing this issue out of no where about 2 weeks ago. I'm not rooted or anything, can't afford to due to job security requirements and such.
I have an XT1095 bought via MotoMaker US. When I used it in the USA, everything was fine. When I came back and started using the phone in my home country, Argentina, cell standby always consumed a ridiculous amount of battery. It still does.
I've gone back to the USA to visit, put my tmobile simcard again, and there's no cell standby drain.
Could it be my Argentine SIM? Or is it a network related problem?
I'm running stock MM rooted.
Thanks.
When you select cell standby in the battery list, does cell standby show a percentage of time without a cell signal? How has your service been since returning to Argentina? No dropped calls, clear voices, high speed data? Or are you having signal issues with your home SIM card? If you have a percentage of time without a cell signal that could be either SIM related or network related, or both.

Set wifi enabled while sleeping to never (in advanced settings). It reduces cell standby drain but uses mobile data instead of wifi.
I've the same problem here in Brazil, when I'm on LTE the battery on standby lasts nothing. Sometimes, the Cell Standby is on top of my battery drain list, even above the screen. I've heard rumors that it's due to the connection staying active even after you closed the app. There is an Xposed module that supposedly fixes it but I've never tried.

I actually have an unlocked S8 on Verizon, but I think the question is generally applicable to all of the firmware versions.
I recently switched from AT&T to Verizon. While the switch has been great in general, it has lead to low signal in our basement where my office is located. While calls/texts seem to work in the basement, I'm noticing reduced battery life due to the reduced signal.
I picked up a (3G) Network Extender to try to improve the situation, but it seems to behave differently than I would have expected. I wasn't thrilled to have to disable VOLTE in order to use the extender at all (since it isn't the LTE version), but the bigger issue is that it *seems* like the device is still using the cell towers except when there is an actual incoming or outgoing call. Is that correct? What does that mean from a battery usage perspective?
In the end, I'm trying to figure out whether there is any real value in using the extender if it doesn't improve battery life? Can anyone comment?
Thanks,
Craig

The 3G extender only routes when there is data going to or from your phone (phone calls). You should see a little icon indicating that you are connecting to the extender. I had 2 of the 3G extenders, neither did anything to help my cellphone battery. I also had continuing issues with losing the GPS sync signal almost daily, even with the external antenna connected and outside away from the house. Verizon has also said that they are "retiring " 3G at the end of 2019 in my area. I bought their new 4G extender, and it works like a miniature cell tower - phone is always connected to it when in range, and it does seem to help with the battery life. Data / messaging / VOLTE works *much* better. Best of all, GPS lock has been solid with no drops at all. If you bought the 3G extender from a Verizon store, take it back and get the 4G instead - works sooo much better!

This is good to know. I actually bought this off of EBay for cheap, so I can't easily swap it out. At that point, I didn't understand the behavior of the device and phone.
