Hotmail and Outlook with WM6 ATT - Palm Treo 750 ROM Development

Hello,
I recently upgraded by ATT Treo 750 to Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) and lost the ability to check my Hotmail with Outlook. I have seen a few threads with installing Live, etc but all i want to do is be able to use the Outlook App to check my Hotmail! Has anyone else figured out this one? When you try the setup via Outlook it basically just sends you to IE. Thanks!

hmm well the thing is with live installed it basically gives you push mail for your hotmail without paying for a premium account, i know hotmail used to charge for pop access and such but Im unsure if they still do. When it opens IE when trying to set it up it's most likely a page telling you to set it up in Live as far as I can remember. The only other thing I can think of other than getting live or an exchange account is to see if you can manually input your settings for your hotmail account, assuming that you have pop access to your account though.

ATT did it
Basically, WM6 has the same pocket MSN as WM5 with the Outlook HTTP sync for Hotmail. ATT stripped that function out of WM6...i have been talknig to MS to find out how to re-install it but they are not helping much.

Email question for all you gurus

When i get my kaiser, i will be setting it up to sync with outlook at home (via a gmail server). This will sync all my mail with outlook, but I am wondering, is there any way to actively send and recieve mail, that would be reflected in outlook at home, on my Kaiser (without using gmail's website).
I believe this is a no, where i can compose messages, and they would be sent next time i sync at home, and where i will only recieve messages when i sync at home, but I am hopeful that there has been some change with this, as the last time i used this type of stuff it was with a windows mobile pda, with only wifi (i.e. not a smart phone).
Thanks for any and all input.

I think (and others here may have much more elegant solutions) that the easiest way to do what your asking (or at least what I think your asking) is to simply set Activesync on your phone to sync manually (and sync it only when you are at home). If you can elaborate on what it is exactly you are trying to do a better answer will be forthcoming.
this is what i have set up now:
My home comp, set up with outlook 2007, vista, etc.
My HTC Kaiser 3G via AT&T.
They sync when i am at home, so any messages i have composed on the Kaiser get sent, and any emails i have recieved since my last sync get updated on my phone.
If i set up an email account on the phone, it will use push email, and then i will be able to activly send and recieve messages trough 3g while on the go.
Is there a way (other then Exchange Server) to be able to activly use my Outlook Email account on the go, and have those changes reflected in the Outlook on my computer, without setting up a seperate account for email only on the phone?
Hosted Exchange?
These questions are specific to the Kasier but more to how ActiveSync works.
The only way that I know of to sync contacts, calendar and email with Outlook is to use Exchange. You can certainly sync POP email accounts and Hotmail accounts, even Gmail accounts one your phone and the contact info with Hotmail but not calendar entries.
To me the most comprehensive solution would be to get a hosted exchange account and then sync with it. You can install Outlook on your computer and connect via RPC over HTTPS (if using Exchange 2003) or Outlook Anywhere (if using Exchange 2007) Hosted Exchange services are not very expensive and they work well. Simple google search will give you all the details.
There is even another Microsoft Exchange thread on this Kaiser forum that mentions 2 different "free" hosted exchange servers

PUSH email w/o exchange ?

I'm using Outlook 2007 on my desktop with 3 POP email accounts, calendar, tasks, etc.
Is there a fairly simple way to sync and push email to my Tilt without having exchange server available ?
Thanks,
DLD
Direct push is for exchange 2003 & 2007 only, it has nothing to do with the outlook client. Why don't you setup the pop3 on your phone? On my phone I have 1 exchange account, and 2 pop3 accounts, and it works great.
You could always try Emoze - http://www.emoze.com/ - some people love it, some people hate it. Not tried it myself.
Other options include using Live Mail - which supports push in WM6, or setting up a Mail2Web account. You could then create a rule in Outlook to forward any received mail to your new address. You might be able to configure Live Mail to pull from other Pop3 mailboxes (I know Gmail does this, but I don't know about Live Mail). That way all three Pop accounts end up in your Live Mail bucket, and you sync just that one account with your phone.
Any good?

I could do that, but then I'd have to manually check for mail.
It would just be nice to have blackberry-like mail arrival.

you can tell the phone to check every 5 mins for emails? that's just as regular as blackberry. battery sapping tho. its in the advanced section of the messaging setup. you can do it on symbian nokias too.

Unless it is an unlocked version, there is a client ready to install on the Tilt that does the same thing. ExpressMail

I like the concept of XpressMail (using SMS notification, therefore good for battery life), though I've had little luck getting push to work. It rarely, if ever, worked on my MPX220. I eventually accepted the fact that I'd simply have to do a send/receive when I was interested in seeing if there was new mail. Now that I have the Tilt, I'm having the same reliability issues. It HAS worked... I've had a couple messages show up all on their own, but for the most part, they don't. I've gone into the online configuration @ https://xpressmail.cingular.com/, and found that I had not only one, but two devices set up (my MPX220 set up twice). I deleted both of those, but for some reason can't seem to get the Tilt added. I can go through the process, but once I select it, it just never gets added to the list. The list of emails online is correct, so obviously the xpress mail app is properly getting the emails from my mail provider (comcast), but it's either not sending out the SMS messages, or they aren't being interpreted correctly by the phone.
I had a situation where i needed to syn with 2 exchange servers, and i didnt' want to run a desktop app.
Google for "seven beta" and get the OWA Out of office. You can set it up to sync only email and it works like push off of the OWA of exchange. If you don't have exchange they have a desktop version. Seven is the same people who develop the xpress mail for cingular.

Where is Hotmail on my Tilt

from my 8125 to my Treo 750, I was able to setup hotmail in the mail/outlook client.. now when i set it up the only way i can check the mail is on the web.. it makes it hard to do email offline. ideas. is there a program that i need to download
You might try setting up your account as [email protected] instead. Microsoft has converted most hotmail accounts over to livemail.

that does not work, it still asks me for pop3 or IMAP info..
in the sticky at the top of this page there is a list of cab files. download and install the cab file for windows live. this will allow you to sync your email into the default messaging program for offline reading. if you have unlimited data, you also have the option of getting your mail blackberry style and have it pushed down to your tilt.

Hotmail

When I go to setup my hotmail on my Tilt using the default messaging program, just as I had it on my 8525, it wont let me. Gives me a link to Windows Live's web site. WTF?!?
Same here. Wonder what's up with that. From what I understand, Hotmail does not use standard POP/IMAP mail either, so you can not enter the settings manually.
Go Find the additional CAB files
For some reason, At&T didn't add the windows Live services. Once you install that, Outlook Mobile will let you set up MSN or Hotmail accounts.

hi, i installed windows live and the outlook still does not let me set up my hotmail account as it was in prevous version of wm, is there any way around ?
cudo
you set up your hotmail through the windows live site that it forwards you to then after you have done that you'll see your hotmail account listed in your messages program.
for some resons it does not work for me. i have got windows live installed on my device VARIO III and when i go to messages and setting up new account it forwards me to the windows live website so i go there and all it lets me do is just read my email. once i will sign out and press "finish" new account does not appear in my pocket outlook.
are you sure you are not using hotmail with pop/smtp ?
cheers

when I installed Windows Live software and logged into the software it setup my hotmail account in outlook for me, I never had to go to the add account in outlook. You cannot manually add it because it is supported by windows live software. I would try reinstall windows live and then log in and check your mail once through it. After that you should be able to hit the mail icon on your phone and it take you to hotmail in outlook.
Installing Windows Live from the CAB Sticky Fixed this for me. Thanks for the heads up!
yeah, there was a problem some versions of windows live...the one from the sticky is a fixed version...
ok all is good now. installed the fixed version from the sticky and after having it set up i got my windows live account in outlook
cheers for the pointers

Can't get hotmail to work.

I have tried to make a new account, but afterwards it just forwards to the hotmail homepage. I want it to work with the integrated Outlook. And in the live program I'm using another account than hotmail to msn, so it won't do any good to check sync with email, when it's another account. What can I do?
It needs the config information. The easiest way to do it is with Windows Live for Windows Mobile. Search for WLM here or PM me & I'll send you a RS link. You want 10.6.033.2100 BTW.
Actually, I think you're SOL if you're already using WLM for another account. POP email isn't available for Hotmail accounts, only for MSN accounts.
unless you pay and upgrade to the 19.99 a year, you will not get POP access to any hotmail account
So my only solution is to pay up, or it will not work in outlook on TyTN?
I have it configured on my normal PC with no problems.
I just installed seven and it works great. I asked the same question on another board today.

Isn't there a plug for Outlook anyway? If you wanted to, just install it from Microsoft.
http://email.about.com/gi/dynamic/o...S74p5AsZCAG2yP5bLTnQvU6m2ivmwN3459c5fMw%3d%3d
And the seven solution for AT&T uses Xpress mail, which requires your Laptop to be On and Connected to the Network. What kind of crap is with the AT&T and Xpress mail?!
And good luck with the BETA program...

Okay, but can I install that link on my TyTN?
funny, i've never had problems w/ hotmail...... it's under windows live for my phone...
Okay, but my problems is, that when I log in to Live IM I don't use my hotmail account but another. Do you have a non hotmail Live IM account, and it still work?

What do you mean you login with another account? You have an IM account and another email account?
maybe pocket MSN will work for you
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/software/pocketmsn.mspx)
Any Windows enabled phone should come with the Live Messenger enabled.
On the MS web site, there a lots of apps
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/software/default.mspx)
The Windows Live app only allows for 1 Hotmail/MSN/Live accont to be signed in at once. If you have a separate ID/account you use for IM and another for email you will have to switch accounts back and forth. This will obviously be a huge hassle and not worth the effort.
I would recommend downloading another instant messenging app and using the Windows Live app for your email account. Unless you pay $19.99 /year you can not get Hotmail emails to work with the WM messaging clients without signing into the Windows Live app.
Hope that helps clarify things.
Yes it does But I would like to perhaps use Skype as voip and chat and IM as hotmail tjecker, but do I just install Skype or should I also be using some voip.cab to get it to work?
Thanks for your help.

True. However, I have gone on line & linked my Live & Hotmail ID's & have forwad set, so I get TWO accounts, one @live.com & one @hotmail.com accounts under one on my device.

Good call on linking IDs. I completely forgot that you could get your emails all in one inbox. The only problem I could see would be not having the right email address show up on messages you send from the phone.
Can you quickly describe how you linked them?
