gps test?
thx for your reply

Were you indoors? Did you move to a different location? You might want to test it with an external gps receiver or try a standalone gps unit (if you can borrow one). Try and find something that is more sensitive than the Kaiser, and, in the same location, see if you can get a signal.
My point is, you might just be in a bad spot. This happens to me at work all the time, it never picks up a signal, even after an hour of searching.

you must set the right com ports up
find out which port gps is on ie. usually com7
go into config (tomtom) annd then guide the tomtom to com7
it will work took me a couple of days to work it out then seemed so obvious

The above advice is all pretty good. If this is the first time you have used tomtom then it can take a good while.
I am assuming tomtom shows the message "no valid GPS signal" after showing briefly the message "No GPS device". If so this is good. It means your com ports are set correctly.
There are two things to be sure of though:
1.
You have aclear view of the sky - especially on the first occassion you get a fix.
2.
Make sure you have a suitable map in the correct location. Obviously getting a fix when there is no map or the map is in the wrong directory will not succeed.
Did quick GPS work and give you a "valid until" date?
GPS test is a nice simple app that will show you the port number you are on so you can make sure tomtom is using the same one. BUT if tomtom only fails at the no valid signal stage then I think your ports are fine.
Finally, some fatal problems can occur if you have changed entries in the "external GPS" settings. This might (according to some folk) require a hard reset to correct. But try the above first.

Check this thread first..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330412
Try GPSViewer and select the port settings manually and choose "Open GPS".
You should see some som action through GPS strings in the Setup page.
Then try with TomTom or Google Maps.
I never had issues with TomTom, but google map was having hard time initializing. But after using GPSViewer, it works pretty neat and quick!

It tests all com-ports,but gpsviewer cant find anything..

While it is true that you can screw yourself if you mess with the external GPS settings, you might not have to hard reset. Check the Kaiser Wiki; all the way at the bottom, you'll find links to the registry settings for the internal GPS. If you follow those steps, and set your TomTom to Other NMEA Receiver, you'll be fine no matter what you did with the external settings.

GPS test here:
http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=24687&associateid=1224
It would help us to know the following:
1.
When tomtom is on does the amber led for GPS flash?
2
Does tomtom show "no valid GPS signal"?
3
Have you got a local map installed?
4
Did quick GPS download current data?
Mike

1.
When tomtom is on does the amber led for GPS flash?
Jep
2
Does tomtom show "no valid GPS signal"?
also correct
3
Have you got a local map installed?
uuh..west europe map..
4
Did quick GPS download current data?
it says after download "valid for six days and twentythree hours"
So I gues, yes
*thx Mike for helping me so far
Edit* gps test; shows "GPS is starting up"..(slow..)

Mmmm. Did GPS test show any bars in the end?

GPS not working

Hi,
I can't GPS signal no matter what I try. I didn't change any default settings in External GPS.
I've installed TomTom and Google maps but neither application is seeing GPS device. In TomTom I get no valid GPS signal and in Google Maps I get not able to initialise the GPS. I've tried using both of the appications with clear view of the sky and left the phone for about 30mins to try and find the satelites.
Any ideas?
I'm thinking I'm having a faulty device but I don't want to replace it just in case I get the new one with SOD problem.
Thanks for any help.
Dt11
at the moment i got the same problem! I can't get it running. The yellow LED is on but there is now signal! Pls help us...
(PS: GpsViewer does not work)

Did you change something on the "External GPS" setting?
If yes, then I think you need to hard-reset.

Grrr. Why is Htc is not able to get this work without hard resest?

Yeah, HTC should improve that one.
The hard-reset thing is described here:

ok thx now it does work....
So dt11 you have to do the same otherwise it wont work...
Geko
Stupid question, but hard reset = soft reset but holding down the 2 soft keys as well yar?
There was a discussion of this in some previous threads, based on which I installed the GPS Viewer and after activating GPS with that (com 4, 4800 baud) Google maps worked very well. No need for a hard, rest, please search the previous topics in GPS and Kaiser
[COM4 / 4800 baud] are the default settings aren't they? I think i've tried those before :S

Question:
Does someone have the "GPSmeter Professional Edition" running?
If i do install this app and run, it's over with the built in GPS so
don't install this app i always got problem with this one...
Can someone else confirm?
Geko
i couldnt get google maps or windows live to work without first running gpsviewer but when my new copy of tomtom navigator 6 (the trial didnt come with my phone) i did a clear storage which takes the phone back to its factory settings and then tomtom work super fast and very accurate in all kinds of weather without having to install a "jumpstart" software.
the way the GPS seems to work is you need a app that will start the GPS for you hence why most HTC bought Kaisers come with tomtom once you start tomtom hit the ok button and then start google maps or Live maps and GPS will work. there also is an app called GPSViewer i believe that will also start the GPS for you. I dont think anyone has gotten Google maps to start the GPS by itself?

Some people have reported that they have but I always seem to need to give it a boost. I use GpsViewer and that always seems to get Google Maps started okay.
Cheers.
All working now. I had to do a hard reset.
It has been said so many times but it won't hurt to repeat it:
WARNING: Don't touch any settings in "External GPS"!!! Otherwise your GPS will not work and you will have you hard reset you phone!
FWIW, I did not have to jump start my GPS in my 8925 with the default ATT ROM. Once I replaced it with the HTC ROM, I now have to jump start it. So it appears whatever the problem is, it's fixable via software.

GPS?

It doesn't work with any application. Do i have to turn on the internal gps somehow?

Go to this page and see the link for external mirror 1. use it to download GPS TEST:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/GPS-Test-Download-34335.html
or get it here:
http://classic.pocketgear.com/softw...ssociateid=1224
When you have installed it, run it and it will auto scan the ports to find the GPS receiver. Make note of the port number - that's the one you'll need for your other applications (like tomtom etc). Make sure you have a clear view of the sky when running it and give it PLENTY time to achieve a first time fix.
By the way if you have ever used the "External GPS" on the Kaiser then you may have altered some settings that can stop GPS working. Unfortunately only a hard reset will cure this. BUT, try the above first. If GPS test can get satellites then so will other applications.
This little application GPS Test is also useful to run before things like Google Maps that some folks have problems with.

Ok. If GPS test works and finds sats then, you have an incorrect port set on the other applications. From GPS Test see what port it has found the GPS on. Then in tomtom say, use "other nmea device" or "internal GPS" whichever option it has in the "configure" menu and set the port to the one noted from GPS test.
Fact is that if GPS test finds sats then everything is working and its just getting the link between the GPS and the nav software that needs fixing.
Mike
I just had to leave my house and try it on the road. Now it works everywhere. YEAH!!!!!!!!!

I used to have the same exact problem...Google Maps just gives up if it doesn't find a fix right away. TomTom does finally get a lock without GPS Test, but it takes less time if you have GPS Test running beforehand.
I had the same problem .. GPS would not work with Google, MSN live. Downloaded GPS test and still nothing. I finally did a "hard" reset (painful, but I did have everything backed up on my PC with Active Sync).
After the hard reset GPS worked GREAT! I must have messed up a setting trying to get it to work. GPS test now reports that the GPS is active on COM4, 9600 baud.

You don't have to run it before every GPS application. Some folks find Google Maps benefits from doing this but I only suggested running the GPS test app to establish which port was being used. Even with Google maps you may find on subsequent occasions you do not need to run an app like GPS Test first.

I don't have that problem - even when I have few fixed satellites. However I did read a report recently where someone routinely had the arrow showing 200mtrs away from his position. Sorry to say it was only after a Hard Reset that the problem vanished.
As a side issue. I have noticed with tomtom and any other GPS software -
If you start the GPS software in an area with no or poor GPS signal, then it will take FAR longer to get a fix EVEN when you go into a clear sky area.. If however when you start the GPS software in a good open sky area then it will fix much more quickly.
The moral of this story - don't start the GPS when you are inside a thick walled building - wait until you get outside first. I'mguessing that starting in an area with a very weak signal sends it searching in all the wrong areas for satellites and it will then take a long time to find them even when you get outside. (This is true, I have noticed with all GPS systems I've used not just the Kaiser.
Mike
FYI, I have found that Map4PDA breaks the GPS. I believe it changes the baud rate to 57600, which is incorrect (it should be 9600). The only way to fix it I have found is to Hard reset and not install Map4PDA.
TomTom, Micrsoft Live Search (with Speach), & Google Maps work great. Features set in that order.
PS that GPS test tool works GREAT. Thanks for the heads up.

ok i run tomtom as well here is what i do:
1) download quickgps update
2) open gpsrouter com4 baud 4800 (search it if you don't have it)
3) run gpstest (under settings make sure it is at com4 baud 4800)
4) open tomtom (change preferences>show gps stutus>configure> try other NMEA set at com4 baud 4800 or Built-in GPS receiver. I tend to get a quicker fix using other NMEA)
good luck.
Thanks, that would probably explain why my gps isn't working as I do not have gpsrouter or gpstest. I'l go searching the forum to try and find it. Knew it had to be something, thanks agian for the help.
You really shouldn't (don't) need those things to make TomTom work. Just make sure TomTom is set to use the internal GPS (or set it to COM4 etc as above, depending on the version you have).
I use the TomTom that came on CD with the phone (not every carrier includes it) and it works perfectly, but you do need to be patient when you first start it up. Initially, it was always say "No GPS device!" for a good few moments before the internal GPS starts up, and then you'll get "Waiting for a valid GPS signal" - how long it waits then is down to your position etc. If you're outside with a good view of the sky - and your QuickGPS data is up to date - it could just be a few seconds - or you might be waiting forever if you're indoors/covered etc.
Does the "No GPS device!" message dissapear after a few moments for you? If it does then all is fine, you may just need to be more patient. If it doesn't, and it's constantly saying that, then something is misconfigured somewhere.

The ATT tilt US version doesn't come with tomtom. I have had a purchased tomtom and the cab that is floating around this forum. That's a real shame, because it works perfectly with the HTC rom. I wonder what AT&T have done to cripple it?
I just tried mine in the office and despite being inside (though on the top floor) it still had me located in about 30 seconds. There's a real joy in having a full-on, reliable TomTom in your phone - I recommend a ROM upgrade!

ive tried setting to com4 with various baud rates (weirdly it hung when i tried it with 4800 and had to soft-reset so didnt work!) ive installed vaious programs (GPStest/GPS info/ GPS Gate etc etc) with all programs including tom tom 7 saying that theres no GPS device!
im pulling my hair out!
im guessing i'll need to update the firmware but hopefully not!

The best way how to start gps is:
start quickgps and download the data, then if u have installed gps test, start it and wait for it to find the satelites. Dont change the options. Try to be outside and not in house or building.
no
the GPS is not being found, it is either disabled by the rom/radio or is Fubar!
simply downloading location data isnt going to get it to work!
unplug your computer, walk off into the distance, put it on the floor and tell it where it is.
does it turn on and boot to windows?
me thinks not.

Another option - try to disable the assisted gps, for that u need to install schaps advanced config - that is a very helpful application.
There can be also one possibility that your gps is faulty.

Go to settings/system/external gps and tell me what settings(in the 3tabs-programs,hardware,access) u have set there.
Have you seen this Configuring Tomtom 6 thread linked to from the Wiki yet? If you've tried all of that and still it doesn't work, if it was me I'd hard reset and make Tomtom Navigator the only program I next installed then I'd test it again without making any configuration changes to it (at least the version I use, I don't know if other versions require any fiddling about to get them to work but TTN 6.032, Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search have all been just a case of once it's installed do a soft reset (not even sure this essential but I do it anyway) and then when I start them up, they work fine). Be very patient and give it ages out in the open to find satellites the first time after a fresh install/hard reset.
No GPS after official update
Hi,
I've got very similar problem : i've upgraded my Kaiser with a official rom/radio from Orange FR (wm 6.1, rom 3.31.73.0 FRE, radio 1.65.16.25).
Since this upgrade, my Kaiser cannot find the inboard GPS. I tried using Google maps, ViaMichelin, OrangeNavigation, and many GPS tools... none of them was able to find the GPS !
That sucks.
I called Orange 2 days ago, and i'm waiting for a response. I'll post there if any news.
Mathieu
yes please mathieu, would be good to hear what they suggest!

GPS SCAN software

I dont know about others, but I've been having problems about my TTN6 acquiring gps signal. What I would have to do is to open my GoogleMap and scan my location there and then open my TTN6. Even the GoogleMap is having a hard time. I have my setting on Com4 and 4600.
I also use QuickGPS and always updated. Not really sure if it is because of cold start but i doubt it. There are times that I'd be using my gps already and I'd have to soft reset my phone(due to alignment issues) and when it comes back on, I would take awhile for it to find a signal(even though i'm on the same spot when I soft reset the phone).
Any help if appreciated.

my first GPS lock took some time and doing, and i finally got it working after i ran this "GPS Test" program. Forgot the original thread & poster i found it here, but here's a post with the same. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374349
I had a similar problem. Not being comfortable flashing another radio, I tried a program called Franson GPSGate. It allowed me to use mulitiple programs that utilize the GPS signal at the same time through the same COM port.
I also get fizes in under 15 seconds when I have GPSGate running first. (it primes the GPS signal and keeps it ready for programs that need it). Just another option.
agreed
GPSGate is a great program. Trialware though. I have started tinkering with a program called "AmazeGPS" that will give you turn-by turn directions, and update your route as you travel, unlike google maps. definetly not as handy as google maps for local searches though. best used if you have an address already. The Radio on your phone does affect GPS, as well as all the other connectivity areas (data, phone, bluetooth, and even wifi, i think). if you are looking for something with good connectivity, 1.71.09.01 is an awesome choice. the tradeoff is that it is a bit of a battery hog. i am assuming that you will be using this in a vehicle or something, as gps itself is a battery hog, and if you plan on using it frequently, you probably have it plugged in somewhere. I live in Arizona, by the way. hope this helps!
Try the attached program, if you are able to see the satellite signal...
I live San Diego, using the PC.Ultimate.V16 rom with Tomtom7. I have my GPS configuration with other NMEA GPS, 57600 baud rate, COM4 and I get a connection in 15 seconds.
I think this question was just asked in another thread.... use GPSTest and then when it acquires a signal open up TTN6 or 7 annoying I know but it works for quite a few people
Excellent
Nice the GPStest, now i try to make functionally mi Googlemaps...
Tks
Here is my advice... I get that same problem sometime in my TomTom (I used to use 6.. but now using TomTom 7)... I installed that GPS Toggle that is a start menu item... It is nice.. it says GPS OFF or GPS ON.. When you turn it on, it says "SEEK : XX" XX beign the number of sats it is searching for... Then when it gets a lock it says "LOCK : XX" and also shows how many "bars" you have.... Sometimes I use it to just test out the GPS function w/o loading TomTom... But I have also found if I turn the GPS ON with it before loading TomTom it locks on faster (a lot faster)... I think it sort of jump starts the GPS chip to lock on faster... It is the same software you have to use if you have a HTC Mogul and want to use TomTom (For some reason TomTom doesn't see the GPS chip in that phone w/o this little program or something simmilar)...
I attached the one I use as a cab.. Just copy it over to your storage card... use file explorer and run the cab file... Then after it is installed do a soft reset... You may have to go into the Today screen options in settings and put a check infront of it to see it on the screen... Hope this helps
