GPS Not Working - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Just got my 8925 and cannot get the GPS to interface with TomTom. It keeps saying GPS connection not found. Is there something special to do to activate the GPS? I have run the QuickGPS.
Thanks in advance,
Tomy51

tried going outside?

Yes, I went outside, tried the 3 different types of GPS's TomTom has ans still not connection.

ok i run tomtom as well here is what i do:
1) download quickgps update
2) open gpsrouter com4 baud 4800 (search it if you don't have it)
3) run gpstest (under settings make sure it is at com4 baud 4800)
4) open tomtom (change preferences>show gps stutus>configure> try other NMEA set at com4 baud 4800 or Built-in GPS receiver. I tend to get a quicker fix using other NMEA)
good luck.

Thanks, that would probably explain why my gps isn't working as I do not have gpsrouter or gpstest. I'l go searching the forum to try and find it. Knew it had to be something, thanks agian for the help.

You really shouldn't (don't) need those things to make TomTom work. Just make sure TomTom is set to use the internal GPS (or set it to COM4 etc as above, depending on the version you have).
I use the TomTom that came on CD with the phone (not every carrier includes it) and it works perfectly, but you do need to be patient when you first start it up. Initially, it was always say "No GPS device!" for a good few moments before the internal GPS starts up, and then you'll get "Waiting for a valid GPS signal" - how long it waits then is down to your position etc. If you're outside with a good view of the sky - and your QuickGPS data is up to date - it could just be a few seconds - or you might be waiting forever if you're indoors/covered etc.
Does the "No GPS device!" message dissapear after a few moments for you? If it does then all is fine, you may just need to be more patient. If it doesn't, and it's constantly saying that, then something is misconfigured somewhere.

The ATT tilt US version doesn't come with tomtom. I have had a purchased tomtom and the cab that is floating around this forum. The only way i can get it to work with either version is to have gpstest and quickgps. But without gpsrouter i usually have to wait 10mins for a fix. Kinda sucks but hey at least it works now.

That's a real shame, because it works perfectly with the HTC rom. I wonder what AT&T have done to cripple it?
I just tried mine in the office and despite being inside (though on the top floor) it still had me located in about 30 seconds. There's a real joy in having a full-on, reliable TomTom in your phone - I recommend a ROM upgrade!

tomtom just sucks without support applications i guess. I have dutty's april 16th and i get a fix within 10-30 seconds now. Yes, I as well can get a fix from my basement within a minute if I have used my tomtom outdoors within the last quickgps upload.

Still can't GPS to work... can anyone help?

I've just got the Vario III new from T-Mobile UK, and I just can't the GPS get to receive any signals. I guess there is no "in box" way of testing the GPS, so I downloaded MS Live Search, and in there the "Centre on GPS". Previously, I set the hardware to COM0, 4800 Baud, autostart GPS by appilcation. In Live Search, I equally set it to COM0.
When is press the "centra on GPS", the righ hand side orange LED starts blinking, and the message inside Live Search is something like "retrieving GPS datat", but that's it. Nothing more happens.
I've also tried it with TomTom, but no result here either, other than the message "invalid GPS data".
I've called T-Mobile support to find out if there's anything on their side that needs doing, but apparently not.
So, I'm pretty stuck. Does anyone have an idea what I could try? Thanks!
First off, never ever go into the External GPS settings in the control panel. The general consensus around here is that it almost always requires a hard reset after messing with that. If you did, make sure it's set to COM4, 4800 baud.
Make sure your apps are set to COM4, 4800 baud. If that fails, a hard reset may be in order.
Why did you set it to COM0? Did someone tell you to do that?
I set it to to COM0 just to try SOMETHING.
I guess a hard reset is in order
So I just leave the GPS settings be and don't even touch them, yes?
Ok, so I've just done a hard reset.
The one and only thing I've done is install Live Search.
In the prefs of it, COM4 was automatically selected.
Hit "centre on GPS", with absolutely no reaction other than "Getting GPS position".
Any further thoughts? Hardware fault? Software issue?
The signal from GPS satellites is very low powered. ANY obstructions to the sky can cause a failure. My handheld Garmin GPSs and my Tilt will not get a lock in the house. Outside; buildings, trees, land masses and clouds all prevent a good lock. From my experiences with the Tilt, I have to get out into the open and wait 5-10 minutes or more for a lock.
Download the new google mobile maps and try that. It seems to get a fix quickly and doesnt time out as quickly as the older version (and some other gps enabled apps).
Cool, I got it to work. I left the device outside on the balcony for 10 minutes, and Live Search did lock in on me.
I now downloaded Google Mobile Maps, but couldn't locate a GPS function (I downloaded it from their website). Am I blind?
The thing that worked for me was to install GPS Viewer (freeware, you can Google it) and then open GPS from there. It takes about a minute to connect but then it stays on and interfaces with Tomtom very well. Prior to running it, please also download and run QuickGPS (it comes as loaded software with Kaiser, you may have to download it also as freeware, helps keep the connection steady; it is advised to download QuickGPS once a week, this is as long as its effect lasts, don't know why). The combination of QuickGPS and GPSViewer works very well.

Menu | Track Location
Hmm no, I dont have that menu item. Maybe I got an older version of it after all?
It's "Menu | Show My Location" on mine.
BTW, I saw a trick on another thread which worked very well for me. Enable the GPS Photo option (by using Kaiser Tweak or tweaking the registry) and open that first. It seems to get a fix very quickly. Once it's got one, you can close it and open any other GPS program like google maps and it tracks instantly. I also have QuickGPS installed and updated so that probably helps too.
After hard resetting twice, I have never run the QuickGPS program and I get a fix every time in less than a minute, even inside my house (by a window).
One program I highly recommend never using until it is updated is Map4PDA. It killed my GPS, requiring a hard reset.
Download GPS Test, run and confirm signal strength by satellite. That should solve your issue or at least answer the question of functionality.

What is wrong with the freaking GPS?!

Hi guys!
Im freaking out! I have a Dutch MDA Vario3 and I just cant seem to get the GPS to work. Tomtom can find the intern gps but no signal! I waited for about an hour today and yesterday it didnt work also..somebody can help me out? I use tomtom 6.032

I did quickgps for about ten times!
gps test?
thx for your reply
Were you indoors? Did you move to a different location? You might want to test it with an external gps receiver or try a standalone gps unit (if you can borrow one). Try and find something that is more sensitive than the Kaiser, and, in the same location, see if you can get a signal.
My point is, you might just be in a bad spot. This happens to me at work all the time, it never picks up a signal, even after an hour of searching.
you must set the right com ports up
find out which port gps is on ie. usually com7
go into config (tomtom) annd then guide the tomtom to com7
it will work took me a couple of days to work it out then seemed so obvious
The above advice is all pretty good. If this is the first time you have used tomtom then it can take a good while.
I am assuming tomtom shows the message "no valid GPS signal" after showing briefly the message "No GPS device". If so this is good. It means your com ports are set correctly.
There are two things to be sure of though:
1.
You have aclear view of the sky - especially on the first occassion you get a fix.
2.
Make sure you have a suitable map in the correct location. Obviously getting a fix when there is no map or the map is in the wrong directory will not succeed.
Did quick GPS work and give you a "valid until" date?
GPS test is a nice simple app that will show you the port number you are on so you can make sure tomtom is using the same one. BUT if tomtom only fails at the no valid signal stage then I think your ports are fine.
Finally, some fatal problems can occur if you have changed entries in the "external GPS" settings. This might (according to some folk) require a hard reset to correct. But try the above first.

Try GPSViewer and select the port settings manually and choose "Open GPS".
You should see some som action through GPS strings in the Setup page.
Then try with TomTom or Google Maps.
I never had issues with TomTom, but google map was having hard time initializing. But after using GPSViewer, it works pretty neat and quick!

While it is true that you can screw yourself if you mess with the external GPS settings, you might not have to hard reset. Check the Kaiser Wiki; all the way at the bottom, you'll find links to the registry settings for the internal GPS. If you follow those steps, and set your TomTom to Other NMEA Receiver, you'll be fine no matter what you did with the external settings.

It would help us to know the following:
1.
When tomtom is on does the amber led for GPS flash?
2
Does tomtom show "no valid GPS signal"?
3
Have you got a local map installed?
4
Did quick GPS download current data?
Mike
1.
When tomtom is on does the amber led for GPS flash?
Jep
2
Does tomtom show "no valid GPS signal"?
also correct
3
Have you got a local map installed?
uuh..west europe map..
4
Did quick GPS download current data?
it says after download "valid for six days and twentythree hours"
So I gues, yes
*thx Mike for helping me so far
Edit* gps test; shows "GPS is starting up"..(slow..)
Mmmm. Did GPS test show any bars in the end?

Quick GPS question...

I have just updated my ROM to "Dutty's WM6.1 Hybrid v2 5.2.19716/5.2.19700" and at the same time installed TomTom.
It can take quite a while to pick up a lock the first time the software is booted but if I close and open TomTom without rebooting the phone the second time is much quicker (almost instant). I have just tried rebooting the phone and it goes through the same slow process the first time tomtom is booted and then quick following that. Is this normal behaviour for GPS on the device (not holding GPS info when the phone is rebooted) or is it an issue with the ROM or Radio. If its the radio is their anyone in the UK who can recommend the best radio for battery life and GPS.
Cheers,
Michael

This is pretty normal for GPS especially on these devices. It takes a while to get the first fix after a reset, but subsequent ones are quicker.
You may be able to speed up this process by using the QuickGPS tool to download cache data of satellite locations.
Also, try and use GPSTest to get the lock first. Many people use the GPSTest application and keep it running in the background as it tends to keep a good lock on things.
Adjust the baud rate with GPStest.
cheers for the responses... i will try the GPSTest thing...
KDKobes: what change does adjusting the baud rate make? quicker to lock?
I'm running the new, stock 6.1 Rom, and the only criticisim I have of it is the really slow initial GPS lock. The first time I use it after a soft reset or reboot, it can take anything in the region of 10-15 minutes, which I really don't think is right - I'm positive the original Rom was better at this. Subsequent fixes are much quicker, but if you find yourself needing the GPS and you happen to have recently rebooted, chance are you'll be well past your destination by the time it picks up, which is not good.
Quick GPS appears to be behaving as it always has - whenever I check it has recent data showing, downloaded through Activesync as normal - but it's almost as if that data's not being used in this Rom.
I should mention I'm seeing this behaviour in both Tom Tom and Live Search... it always does get a lock eventually, so there doesn't appear to be a problem with the GPS itself. Has anyone got any insight into this?

The baud rate is used by the internal COM port to interface with the GPS controller. It is the same deal like the speed of a modem...2400....4800...9600, etc.
Honestly with the amount of data that a GPS passes (which is not that much) I don't know if it makes a difference if it is set low. However, I always set mine high because faster is better, right so, might as well.

Where would you even set that though? I played with GPS Tool for a while, but it appeared to forget whatever port setting I used next time it ran anyway, so presumably it only affects that session of GPS Tool, not the system as a whole. In TomTom there's no speed setting for the internal GPS either; it should all be handled by WM itself.

Yeah, I think that's right... you can set it inside GPSTest.
However, like I stated many people find that GPSTest gets the quickest lock and prefer to either open it first and/or leave it running in the background. I haven't used my GPS that much, but I do find that this works.
It at least allows me to see what is going on with the lock. If I start Google Maps it will either work or not with GPS, but not really show me what's going on. GPSTest will allow me to see if I have a lock or not and then open up my other apps for use.
I just realised, I'm talking about the HTC GPS Tool, while you're talking about GPS Test - which is that, the Chartcross one?
You should try IGO8

Hello!
I have experienced exactly the same problem as you have with TomTom.
I have both a "Tytn II" and a HTC Advantage (X7500).
When using TomTom on the X7500 the GPS takes time to fix a position, 15-20 min or more is not unusual after a soft reset.
Then when it has fixed the position it is EXTREMLY slow when it comes to calculating the route!
I live in Sweden and I often drive to Germany, and when calculating the route from Sweden to Germany it takes over 3 min to finish!
Then we have the issue with the struggling graphics, (Of course I have been told that TomTom has trouble with VGA displays, and I find that to be very true.) the map is very slow and sometimes it stops completly for a few secounds!
On my Tytn II however the map is not struggling the same way, and it calculates much faster then on the X7500, Why? I dont know!
X7500 is a much faster device so it beats me!
The GPS lock is however almost as slow on the Tytn II as it is on the X7500, no matter if I have used quick GPS to download data or not!
A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a navigation program called IGO8, I decided to try it, and believe me when I say that I will never go back to TomTom again!
First of all the GPS lock is almost instant with IGO8, from a soft reset it finds a lock within maybe 2 min at most! And then it seems that it somehow remembers the position and the next time you start the program it will have a fix in secounds!
Then it calculates much faster, I tryed to calculate the route from Sweden to Germany on my X7500 and it was finishes under 20 secounds! (Compare that to over 3 minutes with TomTom on the same device!)
It supports VGA screens, so the map floats much better on my X7500.
Next thing is that there is more maps for IGO 8 so it covers much more of "mother earth" if you want to navigate in a foreign country!
It also has 3D terrain, and can even show buildings in 3D! (Only works in some places!)
It has a very simple and logical interface that is much easyer to understand then TomTom, and it is skinnable and very customizable!
So if you are serious about having a great navi I would strongly recommend you to try IGO 8! I can promise you will not be dissapointed!
Oh and buy the way, I dont work for IGO either!

I have problems getting software on my O2 Stellar to recognise the internal gps. I've tried a couple of different programs (TomTom & GPSTuner) and also fiddled around with the com ports in both the software and on the Stellar (using the External gps app in settings) but still no recognition of the internal gps.

I've seen GPSTest mentioned a few times. It's not on my Stellar - where can I get it?
Am I missing something?

Get GPSTest here
You can either manually set it to a COM port or have it autoscan. I believe some ROMs identify it as COM3 and others COM4, so probably best to do an autoscan. It might take a few minutes to find it, and then another few to get a lock. But after that it generally starts up and locks within a minute or two (in my experience).

TomTom Navigator on my TP

I managed to install TT and set all the setting that I saw in a post somewhere but I can't get a GPS signal. When I'm in the TT "Show GPS status" menu it shows that it found a satellite but when I switch back to the map it says "Waiting for a valid GPS signal...". I tried doing it outside with no luck. It just wont get the signal. Any help?
well, i know you said you followed some settings, TT works fine on my TP, so here are my settings;
->set to internal gps
in Settings/ External GPS
-> gps program port = com4
-> no gps hardware port
-> under access, make it manage gps auto.
hope this helps,
That's how I set my preferences. How long did you have to wait the first time to get a signal? And did you stay in one place?
I read somewhere that you need to run HTC GPS Tool prior to running TomTOm for the first time. I don't know if that is necessary or not, TT7 works on mine, but it takes a good 4-5 minutes before it acquires satellites. Garmin acquires much faster and I have heard that TT6 is quicker as well.
well, all i did was install TT, and run it. i did use the agps program at first and my gps acquires satelites within 30secs or under ... it does tend to lag a little (yest when i was driving, when i reached the turn, it said i had 5metres to go, but when i made the turn, it recognized that i did, so it was a small error)
Well it still doesn't get the signal. Ill try it another time when its warmer so i don't have to put my phone on the window. If that doesn't work its bye bye TT and than its either GArmin of iGo

I saw many answers but noone mentioned the AGPS.
If you see all blue bars once and it turns back/forward to grey/blue bars; then dissable AGPS.
I think I have also similar problem... Sometimes it works and usualy it works if I run also GoogleMaps but without this I get only 5-10 gray bars with strong signal but they do not come blue.
Is only ROM and Radio update cure?

GPS SCAN software

I dont know about others, but I've been having problems about my TTN6 acquiring gps signal. What I would have to do is to open my GoogleMap and scan my location there and then open my TTN6. Even the GoogleMap is having a hard time. I have my setting on Com4 and 4600.
I also use QuickGPS and always updated. Not really sure if it is because of cold start but i doubt it. There are times that I'd be using my gps already and I'd have to soft reset my phone(due to alignment issues) and when it comes back on, I would take awhile for it to find a signal(even though i'm on the same spot when I soft reset the phone).
Any help if appreciated.

The tricky thing with radios is that they are different for every ROM, location and provider! So realy the only thing to do is try acouple out! Or go to the Ultimate Radio thread and read to see if someone from your area has recomended one or two! Here is the link to the thread! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393182
Where are you located? If you are by me than I can recomend a couple!

Ok, thats far away and much warmer than Minesota! Yea I dont know any for California! There should be some suggestions in hte radio thread though! Sorry, wish I could help you more!
not sure if there's a difference, but on my device, i have set it to com 4 and 9600 and things seem to work fine here in Malaysia and in my travels to Indonesia.
my first GPS lock took some time and doing, and i finally got it working after i ran this "GPS Test" program. Forgot the original thread & poster i found it here, but here's a post with the same. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374349
I had a similar problem. Not being comfortable flashing another radio, I tried a program called Franson GPSGate. It allowed me to use mulitiple programs that utilize the GPS signal at the same time through the same COM port.
I also get fizes in under 15 seconds when I have GPSGate running first. (it primes the GPS signal and keeps it ready for programs that need it). Just another option.
agreed
GPSGate is a great program. Trialware though. I have started tinkering with a program called "AmazeGPS" that will give you turn-by turn directions, and update your route as you travel, unlike google maps. definetly not as handy as google maps for local searches though. best used if you have an address already. The Radio on your phone does affect GPS, as well as all the other connectivity areas (data, phone, bluetooth, and even wifi, i think). if you are looking for something with good connectivity, 1.71.09.01 is an awesome choice. the tradeoff is that it is a bit of a battery hog. i am assuming that you will be using this in a vehicle or something, as gps itself is a battery hog, and if you plan on using it frequently, you probably have it plugged in somewhere. I live in Arizona, by the way. hope this helps!
Try the attached program, if you are able to see the satellite signal...
I live San Diego, using the PC.Ultimate.V16 rom with Tomtom7. I have my GPS configuration with other NMEA GPS, 57600 baud rate, COM4 and I get a connection in 15 seconds.
I think this question was just asked in another thread.... use GPSTest and then when it acquires a signal open up TTN6 or 7 annoying I know but it works for quite a few people
Excellent
Nice the GPStest, now i try to make functionally mi Googlemaps...
Tks
Here is my advice... I get that same problem sometime in my TomTom (I used to use 6.. but now using TomTom 7)... I installed that GPS Toggle that is a start menu item... It is nice.. it says GPS OFF or GPS ON.. When you turn it on, it says "SEEK : XX" XX beign the number of sats it is searching for... Then when it gets a lock it says "LOCK : XX" and also shows how many "bars" you have.... Sometimes I use it to just test out the GPS function w/o loading TomTom... But I have also found if I turn the GPS ON with it before loading TomTom it locks on faster (a lot faster)... I think it sort of jump starts the GPS chip to lock on faster... It is the same software you have to use if you have a HTC Mogul and want to use TomTom (For some reason TomTom doesn't see the GPS chip in that phone w/o this little program or something simmilar)...
I attached the one I use as a cab.. Just copy it over to your storage card... use file explorer and run the cab file... Then after it is installed do a soft reset... You may have to go into the Today screen options in settings and put a check infront of it to see it on the screen... Hope this helps
